Brendan Rodgers addressed a press conference at Melwood on Thursday afternoon ahead of Liverpool’s first game of the new Premier League season against Southampton at Anfield on Sunday.
When asked about a new contract for Glen Johnson, Rodgers said there was no update to be given and looked coy on the situation. Other than that, here are the highlights of his press conference:
On team news
Jon Flanagan is still in rehab, Adam Lallana out still but both will start training the week after next. Lazar Markovic unavailable this weekend.
Daniel Agger also unavailable, but they’re our only casualties for the Southampton game.
On pre-season
Pre-season was good, finishing with an excellent game against Dortmund last weekend. We’re really excited to get going.
On Southampton’s player exodus this summer
Every club loses players, but will hope they have the objectives to continue improving.
On Raheem Sterling
I didn’t say Raheem Sterling was like Lionel Messi, I was a bit shocked to read I’d “said” that. He’s a great young talent though.
Sterling is just one of a number of young players here with so much potential, we’re looking forward to seeing their developments.
I’ve not heard anything about Sterling being offered a new contract.
On more transfer activity
We’re nearly done with transfers. There’s one or two more things to complete. We needed to develop the squad this year, add more depth.
The players we’ve brought in will allow us to deal with injuries and more games. We needed to bring in players this summer.
This summer will probably be our biggest transfer window for the next two years.
Alberto Moreno deal to be completed very soon and he’ll be a terrific signing for us if that’s done.
On finding goals after Luis Suarez’s departure
The spotlight is on the team, we won’t be relying on Daniel Sturridge to score goals. The group has been developing and working well.
What happened last season counts for nothing. It’s a new, long, hard season, but an exciting one and the belief of the group of players.
Our league objective is to finish in the top four, then we can look beyond that.
We’ve got goals in the team, intensity, Suarez leaving makes no difference to that. We’ve proved that before.
We’ll look to improve that top end of the field (attack), but if the right player doesn’t come along, we’ll play with what we’ve got.
On the Premier League and long-term objectives
The Premier League is very competitive, a fantastic league to be in and we’ll be ready for the challenge ahead.
We’re looking to make this a sustainable team for the next 5-10 years, lots of young talent.
People will automatically look at Man City and Chelsea to win the title, we’re up there to challenge and be competitive again.
Every team is forensically looked at in football nowadays. Suarez was a great talent, but we scored more goals from other parts of team.

Mark Holmes challenges up-and-coming rapper and QPR fan Franko Fraize in the opening round of the new weekly TEAMtalk Prediction League.
This season, our man Mark will take on someone from the world of music or celebrity to predict the outcome of the 10 Premier League games every weekend.
Every correct result will be worth one point, while every correct scoreline is worth three points. We will keep a tally throughout the season to see how Mark fares against all of our guests.
Manchester United v Swansea City
Mark: Lots of people expect United to waltz back into the top four this season but they've got to do some more business to make sure of that. However, the boost of a new manager will carry them through their opener. 3-0.
Franko: This won't be as easy as United are expecting. I fancy an opening-day shock! 2-2.
Leicester City v Everton
Mark: No team, no matter how good, wants their first game to be away at a newly-promoted side. I don't expect Leicester to be too far away from the relegation mix this season, but they should get something here. 1-1.
Franko: I think Leicester will struggle to find their feet for first few games of the campaign. 0-2.
QPR v Hull City
Mark: I'm really not sure what to expect from QPR this season, whereas Hull should challenge for a top-half place. However, the atmosphere at Loftus Road will be electric for this one. 2-1.
Franko: I'm a Rangers fan so starting on a confident note! 2-1.
Stoke City v Aston Villa
Mark: As a Stoke fan, I'll have to try not to let my heart rule my head predicting our games this season! There is genuine reason to be excited about the team Mark Hughes has put together, though, whereas I can't see anything other than a poor season for Villa. 3-1.
Franko: I think Villa will struggle this year. Mark Hughes seems to have got them playing at Stoke, too. 1-0.
West Brom v Sunderland
Mark: Both of these sides have made some decent signings but it's a big test for Alan Irvine at West Brom, while Sunderland have still got some more work to do if they are to steer clear of the bottom half. I'll go for home advantage. 1-0.
Franko: I think this one will be a bit of a cautious one for both sides. I can't see any goals myself. Bore draw. 0-0.
West Ham v Tottenham
Mark: I think Spurs could be this season's surprise package in the sense that they mount a serious challenge for the top four. Nobody even seems to be mentioning them! They have struggled at West Ham recently, but I fancy them to lay down an early marker. 0-3.
Franko: I think this will be a bit of a boring one but Spurs will nick it late on. 0-1.
Arsenal v Crystal Palace
Mark: I think Arsenal made bigger strides forward than many gave them credit for last season. With another top player in Alexis Sanchez on board, they should be a joy to watch this time around. 4-0.
Franko: I think Arsenal will be the team to beat this year and off the back off the Community Shield win they will be full of confidence. 1-0.
Liverpool v Southampton
Mark: Liverpool have addressed last season's issue, which was a lack of squad depth but, like many, I think they will be weaker without Luis Suarez. Southampton are also certain to be weaker than last season but I don't think they'll be anywhere near the bottom three. 3-1.
Franko: Liverpool have looked good in pre-season and with Southampton selling so many of the core players from last year I predict they will struggle to get out the blocks. 2-0.
Newcastle v Manchester City
Mark: After finally being given some money to spend, Alan Pardew will be confident of challenging for eighth spot this season. Manchester City's transfer business hasn't blown me away but they'll be as consistently efficient as ever. 1-2.
Franko: I think Newcastle will struggle this year. Loic Remy was an asset for them last year and I think they will miss him. I think Man City will get over the Arsenal defeat relatively quickly, starting at St James' Park. 0-2.
Burnley v Chelsea
Mark: As I mentioned earlier, no club wants to visit a newly-promoted side on the opening weekend. Turf Moor will be a tough place to visit at any time this season but Chelsea should have too much quality. 0-2.
Franko: I know Burnley did well in Championship but I really think Chelsea will dominate this one. 0-3.
Franko Fraize: This week's guest predictor
Five from Franko Fraize
How did you come to support your club and what are your favourite memories from your time as a fan?
My old man is a massive QPR fan. There wasn't a lot of choice in the matter really!
My best memories are from when we got promoted from the Championship in 2010-2011. Being at Loftus Road that day was unreal. We all waited to hear the results of the points fiasco and when it came through as just a fine the whole place turned into party central. It was an unbelievable atmosphere!
Who have been your biggest heroes during your time supporting the club?
Les Ferdinand. The Les Ferdinand days were when I first started taking football seriously and the last time I remember us being a respectable Premiership team. After Les left we went downhill for a good few years. Les gives me that rose tint if you know what I mean.
What do you make of the current team? What are your hopes for the season?
I'm happy with the togetherness we seem to have in the dressing room. The last couple of years haven't seen much of that and I think it was a big problem for us. Everyone dug deep for each other last season and I hope that carries on into this one.
I'm more than happy with the signings so far and if we keep Remy we will be laughing. All I care for this season is to stay in the Premier League. Stay up and build from there.
Everyone has a soft spot for another team. Who's yours and why?
Arsenal because in my family it seems to be one or the other. Rangers or Arsenal
What's going on for you at the moment?
It's been a massive year for me as an artist. This year has seen Radio 1 daytime playlist play for my track 'Treasures'; saw me support one of my favourite bands, 'The Enemy'; I played on the Hyde Park Bill alongside The Libertines; I Played Wembley with Pro Green and Connor Maynard.
It's been an eventful one. Soccer AM also used one of my tunes and as Reverend Jon McClure told me, "That's the ghetto love that means the most."

Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign at home to Southampton on Sunday. Ben Twelves previews the much anticipated clash.
Liverpool v Southampton
Sunday, 17th December 2014, 1.30pm Kick Off (UK)
With the summer long wait finally over, Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool will begin their assault of the Premier League on Sunday when they’ll face Southampton at Anfield.
The Reds will be looking to get off to a similar start to last season, when a dramatic opening day win over Stoke City provided the springboard for picking up three straight wins and starting the season in fine form.
It’s been a positive summer of transition for Liverpool – who enjoyed a decent pre-season campaign that was capped off with an outstanding display against Borussia Dortmund last time out – with eight new signings walking through the doors to boost what was a small squad at the managers’ disposal with an injection of real quality and frightening potential.
The corresponding fixture last season saw the Saints become the first team to beat Rodgers’ improving side with a 1-0 win at Anfield thanks to a goal from our new recruit, Dejan Lovren, but the Reds returned the favour at St Mary’s with an excellent 3-0 away thanks to goals from Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and a last minute penalty from Steven Gerrard in front of the travelling Kop.
Team News
Two of Liverpool’s summer signings from Southampton are in line to face their former club, but Adam Lallana won’t be joining Rickie Lambert and Lovren as part of the squad due to an injury sustained while on the clubs’ tour of the US. Lallana is said to be recovering well however and has returned to light training, meaning an arrival back to match action for the £22million man could be only three weeks away.
Frustratingly for another new signing, Lazar Markovic is a doubt for the opening weekend clash due to suffering with an on-going niggling injury, but the Serbian is reported to be nearing a return to match action and could be ready in time for Liverpool’s second game of the season, if not the first.
The 20-year-old’s absence is likely to see Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge continue in what is proving to be a highly exciting and explosive attacking line up for the Reds.
New left back Alberto Moreno, whose move from Sevilla is all but confirmed, could go straight into the squad for Sunday’s game and despite limited training time with his new teammates. The Spaniard could find himself in the starting XI, replacing the makeshift Glen Johnson who filled the void against Dortmund last time out ahead of Jose Enrique.
Like last Sunday, the Liverpool squad is unlikely to feature Daniel Agger or Fabio Borini who are both said to be recovering from injuries at the same time as nearing the Anfield exit door.
Predicted XI: Mignolet, Manquillo, Skrtel, Lovren, Johnson, Gerrard, Henderson, Can, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge.

Fans luar kata season nie LIVERPOOL akan Jatuh ke lubuk balik selepas pemergian Suarez . Admin sikit tak ambil kesah apa mereka kata . Admin yakin musim 14\15 LIVERPOOL lebih baik dari musim 13\14 even tanpa suarez ! no Suarez no Problem ! In BR We Trust ! kplm -zs-

The day after manager Brendan Rodgers likened Raheem Sterling to Lionel Messi, the teenager is reported to be heading for an improved contract at Anfield.
Rodgers told reports earlier this week:
“When you look at the finish against Manchester City in New York, how many times have we seen Messi produce a touch like that? Taking it through bodies when it’s so tight in the box.”
He praised:
“Tactically, technically, and what has been beautiful to watch with Raheem has been his maturity. He’s turning into a beautiful young man, with all the responsibility. He’s taking it all in his stride and now he’s in a good place with every part of his game. It’s just about maintaining that commitment to his work. He’s still only 19, but in big games he’s performed and he’s a wonderful talent.”
And now the 19-year-old is reported to be agreeing a new deal that will significantly improve his current £30,000 per week.
Earlier this summer reports suggested the English attacker would be handed a £100,000 per week contract, something we discussed here.
Sterling made 38 appearances last season, scoring 10 goals, impressing after returning to the side in December and being a key component as Rodgers’ side pushed for the title.
Following Luis Suarez‘s departure this summer, Sterling will become even more important for The Reds – with he and Philippe Coutinho linking up expertly so far this pre-season.

Liverpool begin their 2014/15 Premier League campaign against Southampton at Anfield on Sunday (13.30pm kick off). Henry Jackson looks back at the Reds’ last five opening day games.
17th August 2013- Liverpool 1-0 Stoke City
Liverpool opened their campaign at home to a stubborn Stoke side last season, and it was one of Brendan Rodgers‘ new signings who would end up being the hero on the day.
Daniel Sturridge got his season off and running with a terrific stoke eight minutes before half-time, and it put the Reds in total control.
With the drifting towards a 1-0 win, Daniel Agger‘s handball after 88 minutes gifted the visitors a chance to draw level from the penalty spot.
Simon Mignolet, signed from Sunderland that summer, expertly denied Jon Walters, however, amid scenes of ecstasy at Anfield, and they held on for the win. The momentum that save gave Liverpool was huge, and they went on to finish second.
Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Johnson, Toure, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Aspas, Sturridge
18th August 2012- West Brom 3-0 Liverpool
Rodgers’ first Premier League game in charge of Liverpool was an absolute disaster, on a day in which everything seemed to go wrong at the Hawthorns.
Despite enjoying the better of the first-half, the Reds just couldn’t finish their chances, and Zoltan Gera’s thunderous strike gave West Brom the lead at the interval.
In the second-half, Agger was sent-off for bringing down Shane Long in the box, and although the Irishman missed the spot-kick, Peter Odemwingie scored from the spot soon after, following a foul by Martin Skrtel on Long.
Romelu Lukaku put the icing on the cake for the hosts, completing a miserable afternoon for Liverpool.
Liverpool starting XI: Reina, Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Lucas, Gerrard, Allen, Downing, Borini, Suarez
13th August 2011- Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland
Then manager Kenny Dalglish had spent big in the summer of 2011, bringing in the likes of Jose Enrique, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing, and much was expected as the Reds hosted Sunderland at Anfield.
Luis Suarez blazed an early penalty over the bar, after he was fouled by former Manchester United man Kieran Richardson, but he headed home Adam’s free-kick soon after to give Liverpool the lead after 12 minutes.
Again they were punished for a lack of ruthlessness, however, as Sebastian Larsson’s brilliantly taken volley after the break earned his side a point.
Liverpool starting XI: Reina, Flanagan, Carragher, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Adam, Henderson, Downing, Suarez, Carroll
15th August 2010- Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal
Roy Hodgson’s first league game as Liverpool manager, in what was a nightmare spell on Merseyside for the current England manager, ended in heartbreak after a gutsy display against Arsene Wenger’s side.
Joe Cole, making his Reds Premier League debut, was sent-off in the first-half after a reckless tackle on Laurent Koscielny, but despite their numerical disadvantage, David N’Gog’s terrific strike in front of the Kop put Liverpool ahead just a minute after the interval.
Hodgson’s men bravely hung on until the dying moments, when Pepe Reina fumbled the ball into the net after Marouane Chamakh’s header had come back off the post.
Liverpool starting XI: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Mascherano, Gerrard, Cole, Jovanovic, Kuyt, N’Gog
16th August 2009- Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool
Following Liverpool’s superb season in 2008/09, they were many peoples tips to win the Premier League under Rafa Benitez in 2009/10. Their campaign did not start well, however.
The home side wasted numerous chances to open the scoring- former Red Robbie Keane was the biggest culprit- before Benoit Assou-Ekotto rifled an unstoppable shot past Reina after 44 minutes.
Although Steven Gerrard converted a penalty early in the second-half, following a foul on new signing Glen Johnson, they were behind again minutes later.
Sebastian Bassong headed home Luka Modric’s free-kick to make it 2-1, and it stayed that way until the final whistle. Liverpool would end up finishing the season in 7th place, and Benitez left the club by mutual consent because of it.
Liverpool starting XI: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Insua, Lucas, Mascherano, Gerrard, Babel, Kuyt, Torres
