Gary Neville has defended Luis Suarez over accusations he dived to win a penalty against Aston Villa, insisting it was "clever" play.
The Uruguayan went down under a challenge from Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan in Liverpool's 2-2 draw at Anfield on Saturday to earn the spot kick that led to the home side's equalising goal.
TV replays suggested there was minimal contact between the two players, but Neville said Guzan touched Suarez and criticised the American for a rash piece of goalkeeping.
And he said Suarez simply did what every professional footballer is expected to do in that situation.
"Every single weekend it becomes a point of national debate when a striker goes down in the box," he told Monday Night Football.
"For me, the goalkeeper makes a really poor decision and 100 times out of 100, if a 'keeper comes flying out at a forward like that then you will end up with a penalty.
"I don't know what Guzan was playing at and I think that when he was sat at home yesterday he'd be reflecting that he'd do something completely different next time.
"A lot of people are offended by the potential that Suarez has dived. If I was in an Aston Villa shirt, I'd be disappointed in my goalkeeper and if I was a Liverpool player I'd actually be disappointed if my player didn't go down in that position when a goalkeeper comes flying out. That's a professional point of view.
"We're asking the question: is it a penalty or is it a dive? The answer is yes, it is a penalty because the knee of Guzan has gone into Suarez's ankle.
"Does he dive? If you watch Suarez's left leg he throws himself to the ground, wins the penalty and plays for it. I'd call it clever as a professional.
"People at home are offended by the fact that players can win penalties, but I'd call that terrible goalkeeping. Luis Suarez has done what I'd want a team-mate of mine to do in that position.
"People may not like hearing that, but that's a fact."
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore took to Twitter to accuse Suarez of diving, describing the decision as "embarrassing" and suggesting that physical football has been "killed by cheats and divers".
However, Neville believes all professional players have tried to earn an advantage by foul means during their careers.
"I can understand the public want a clean game and they don't like it," he added.
"But I can't believe ex professionals come out and suggest that they are offended by this. Every professional football player has tried to win an advantage or win a foul or go to ground easily during their career at some point.
"I guarantee you, absolutely."

Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates is to be loaned to Nacional, according to reports in Uruguay.
The 6ft 5in centre-back, who was signed from Nacional in August 2011, is currently sidelined after suffering an ACL injury while on international duty in August.
The 23-year-old was expected to miss the whole of the 2013/14 season with the injury but explained back in November that he hoped to return earlier in order to potentially be part of Uruguay’s World Cup squad.
“You always think positively, I think that’s the most important thing” he told the official LFC website. “In my case, I keep myself going by focusing on getting back as quickly as I can, and with the national team, the World Cup is another goal to help me with my recovery.”
Uruguayan media outlet Subrayado claim Coates will re-sign for Nacional on a six-month loan, presumably in an attempt to get fit ahead of the World Cup.
Coates was signed for a fee that could rise to £7 million after impressing at the 2011 Copa America.
Liverpool confirmed the loan of fellow young centre-back Tiago Ilori to Granada on Monday.
Meanwhile, another youngster who was loaned out this month, full-back Ryan McLaughin, impressed on his professional debut for Barnsley on Saturday.

Neil Collins hits back at the media’s reaction to Luis Suarez winning a penalty for Liverpool against Aston Villa on Saturday.
You could be forgiven for thinking everyone was talking about Tom Daley’s Splash considering the amount of attention given to an apparent dive.
Yet, the press has blown out of all proportion the manner in which Suárez won his penalty against Aston Villa. The majority of pundits felt the decision was correct, but that didn’t make any difference. The fact it was open to such debate proved it wasn’t an obvious dive; but that didn’t matter either. There were papers to be sold, and his name sells like no other.
Following the final whistle, social media was awash with the subject. Twitter went into meltdown with many angry Kopites venting their spleen at Stan Collymore, who was adamant on talkSPORT that the Uruguayan had cheated.
In contrast, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Danny Murphy all supported Suárez on Match of the Day. Critics will argue that their views were biased coming from two strikers and an ex-Liverpool midfielder, but even without my red-tinted glasses on I could see they were talking sense.
A player with Guzan’s bulk should never be stampeding out of his goal on a wet pitch and throwing himself at a striker’s feet. Plus, our No.7 was heading away from goal and was probably at too tight an angle to round the keeper anyway. There were a couple of Villa players dashing in to cover too.
Therefore, Jonathan Moss was correct in deeming the penalty a sufficient enough punishment not to dismiss Guzan. From the referee’s perspective behind the play it looked like a stonewall penalty. He can only award what he sees, and doesn’t have the benefit of viewing endless slow-motion replays in minute detail.
Yet, after reaching a general consensus in the studio, the producers at the Beeb still felt the need to run a viewers’ poll to determine whether Suárez dived.
The Daily Mail were still banging on about it two days later; publishing a story with a panel asking Jamie Redknapp, Martin Keown, ex-referee Graham Poll and sports journalist Martin Samuel if it was a dive. All said no.
Collymore said yes, alongside Guzan who’s response was always going to be obvious. In the interests of fairness, shouldn’t they have been asking Suárez as well considering they got hold of the Villa keeper?
At Stoke, Sterling won a far softer pen, which arguably had a handball in the run-up to it as well. Other than Mark Hughes, there were few condemning the English winger. In fact, several pundits said how clever the 19-year-old had been in taking the ball out of Wilson’s reach and inviting the tackle.
Suárez was no different on Saturday. His feet are unbelievably quick and Guzan was naïve to think he could swipe the ball away without taking him out.
This was hardly a repeat of Suárez’s dive against Stoke last season though. Back then he was rightly castigated for his theatrics, but when he came out and admitted his dishonesty; it was used as yet another stick to beat him with by the press.
On Saturday Suárez ran full pelt onto Gerrard’s superb raking ball and can’t be blamed for losing his balance under the slightest contact whilst moving at such pace.
Neither did he purposely initiate contact with the goalie; as was practiced to a fine art by Henry, Pires and Ljungberg a few years ago. Yet, Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ were the darlings of the London-based media, so they were never brought to task.
A player of Suárez’s calibre is always going to attract plenty of fouls though. Not only has he won the most penalties in the Premier League, but he’s also the most fouled player.
Yet, referees often turn a blind eye when he’s kicked black and blue by opposition. Kevin Mirallas got away with just a booking for a ridiculous tackle, which could’ve broken his leg. And Samuel Eto’o blatantly chopped him down in the area for a certain penalty, and then had the nerve to hurl abuse for diving.
After the bite, the media (led by Sky) asked every man and his dog for an opinion; even getting a quote off the Prime Minister. Geoff Shreeves grilled both Dalgish and Rodgers immediately after the Evra and Ivanovic incidents, but did we see him doing the same when Mourinho practically called Suárez a cheat?
Rodgers and Moyes were both fined £8,000 for criticising referees recently (which at least demonstrated some uncharacteristic consistency from the FA). But is there any difference between criticising a player’s professionalism and questioning a referee’s integrity?
Furthermore, Villa’s Leandro Bacuna fell to the floor clutching his face after a nudge in the side from Sturridge. Not a huge deal was made of this, but is trying to get an opponent sent off any different to trying to dupe the ref into awarding a pen? Can you imagine the repercussions if Suárez had done that?
Last January, ESPN issued an apology after commentator Jon Champion called Suárez a cheat live on-air following an accidental handball that led to the decisive goal against Mansfield. Therefore, surely Mourinho as a manager should have a greater punishment? But there was no apology, or an invite from the FA to explain his comments as requested of Rodgers following his comments about Lee Mason.
Also, would the media get their knickers in a twist over one of their favourite England internationals like Walcott, Lampard or Townsend going down a bit easy?
The only time the media (or the FA for that matter), outright condemns an England player is when the misdemeanour is absolutely obvious. I’m thinking of Kyle Walker taking a legal high, Ashley Young’s latest ‘Eddie the Eagle’ impression, Rooney swearing down a camera lens and Ashley Cole’s shooting of the work experience boy.
Anyone with the slightest skills in lip-reading knew what John Terry said in the incident with Anton Ferdinand, and yet the FA dealt half the punishment to the ex-England captain as opposed to the eight-game ban handed to Suárez for his spat with Evra, which lacked concrete evidence. Also, Suárez got two more games for the bite than for alleged racial abuse, so what sort of message are the FA sending out there?
Keep this next bit quiet in case any suit at Wembley realises, but they gave Wilshere a two-game suspension for flipping his middle finger, which was double what they gave to Suárez for the same crime. Do the words “piss-up” and “brewery” spring to mind?
Suárez has made the headlines for the all right reasons this season, but the media don’t seem to like this calmer version, who’s contributed 22 goals and five assists for his team; including several as captain.
It’s no coincidence to me that this character assassination is happening as England prepare to face Uruguay in June. The press are now bored with his masterful displays and are literally gagging for him to mess up again.
This is just the latest in a long string of media hypocrisies surrounding Suárez though. Sky buried him for months, and even took the piss by playing the Jaws theme over his clips montage when he returned against Sunderland.
Yet, 90 minutes and two goals later, they had incredibly changed their tune with presenter Ed Chamberlin remarking ‘how good it was to have him back,’ and that it was now all about ‘payback’ – a strange choice of word suggesting Suárez was wronged; thus contradicting their original stance on him.
Payback will be on his mind when his nation takes on Roy Hodgson’s men though, and he’ll be relishing sweet revenge.
The new five-year contract isn’t a guarantee that Suárez will stay in the summer, but at least he’ll now go with our best wishes; as hard as it will be to accept. However, if he does decide to leave the media will have played no small part in making up his mind.

Former Liverpool attacking midfielder Luis Garcia says he will always support the club, after announcing his retirement from football last week.
Watch Luis Garcia’s 5 greatest Liverpool goals
Garcia was a key part of Liverpool’s Champions League 2005 triumph, scoring the winning goal in the Reds’ semi-final victory over Chelsea.
In his days at Liverpool from 2004, Garcia also won the FA Cup, before he left for Atletico Madrid in 2007.
Garcia was inundated with support from Reds fans on Twitter when he confirmed he had retired from football last week, aged 35.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Garcia said the support he got from Liverpool fans was amazing, and his days on Merseyside are ones he’ll cherish all his life.
“I was so proud that I had the chance to be there [at Liverpool], to enjoy the crowd and all the things we did in the past. I’m going to be a Red for the rest of my life.
“I’m very happy to hear those kinds of things. The fans know what I feel. It’s not easy to finish playing for Liverpool.
“After seven years, they are still singing my song and sending me messages, asking me how I feel and where I am – and if I’m coming back. It is one of the most important things I’ve ever had.”
After leaving Liverpool, Garcia had spells back at Atletico Madrid (where he had previously played between 2002-2003), Racing Santander, Panathinaikos, Puebla and Pumas.
At international level, he made 20 appearances for Spain, scoring four times, and five appearances for Catalonia, in which he scored five.

Scott Taylor kicks off a series of articles looking at which areas Liverpool need to strengthen, starting with the perennial problem area of left-back.
Note that obvious candidates such as Luke Shaw and Fabio Coentrao aren’t included, enough is already known about them.
Ben Davies
The 20-year-old has become a key part of the Swansea squad ever since the long term injury to Neil Taylor. Since then, Davies has featured 61 times for the Swans scoring a total of three goals. Despite being young, Davies has plenty of experience including in this season’s Europa League and already at international level, having made nine appearances for Chris Coleman’s Wales side.
That he plays for Swansea is an important factor; Brendan Rodgers would have seen a lot of Davies in the time he was at the club. Despite signing a contract extension last summer to take his contract until June 2017, I still believe Liverpool should target one of Rodgers’ former players.
Davies’ age and room for development make him an ideal purchase in-line with the club’s policy. He’d be a much cheaper and perhaps more realistic option than Southampton’s Luke Shaw.
Ricardo Rodriguez
Next up on the list of possible left backs is 21 year old Ricardo Rodriguez, who plays for Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg.
Although being slightly older than Davies, Rodriguez has as much experience as him. He’s made 58 appearances for the German side.
He is someone Liverpool are crying out for with such consistency, and someone who will soon get some World Cup experience with his national side Switzerland in the summer.
Wolfsburg are an up and coming team in Bundesliga and like Liverpool are targeting a Champions League spot under current manager Felix Magath, so it is important that if Liverpool want Rodriguez, they should make a bid sooner rather than later. Rodriguez, like Davies has three goals to his name for Wolfsburg and has scored at the biggest scene, a 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund.
Premier League side Sunderland reportedly had a £6 million offer rejected for the full back in October, and since then has attracted the interest of Chelsea as they seek a replacement for Ashley Cole.
Alex Sandro
Another option is Porto’s Alex Sandro. Sandro is 22, the oldest of the targets featured in this article, but is the most decorated.
Having played for Atletico Paranaense, Santos and now Porto, the left back has picked up a total of eight honours including a Under 20 World Cup.
Since joining Porto for around €10 million in 2011, Sandro has really shone. He’s made 45 appearances for his club, scoring twice, which is similar to both Davies and Rodriguez in terms of goals to appearances ratio.
Porto seem to produce big talents in football before they are sold for a large fee to European clubs. This will more than likely be the case for Sandro – and other Porto players such as Danilo and Fernando Reges.
The estimated value for Sandro would be around £15m, which may seem a bit excessive for Liverpool. However, if you want quality then you should be prepared to spend big.
Overall
The best thing about all these targets is that they can come straight into the squad and no doubt perform, something which Brendan Rodgers has openly spoken about; signing players to make an immediate impact on his first XI.
