Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has taken on more responsibility since becoming vice-captain this season but may have to accept even more in the coming weeks.
With captain Steven Gerrard likely to be sidelined for up to three weeks with a hamstring problem and Lucas Leiva out for twice that period with a thigh injury, central midfield is starting to look a little light.
Henderson and Joe Allen are likely to start in the middle for the FA Cup fifth-round game at Crystal Palace. It is debatable whether Gerrard would have started against Palace anyway but, in his absence, Henderson finds himself having to up his game even more.
“To lose Lucas first was a big blow because he has been outstanding for us since he came into the team as that defensive, holding midfielder,” said Henderson. “Obviously Stevie (Gerrard) is a big loss, even though it is not as long (as Lucas), but there are some big games coming up that he might not be involved in.
“But it is another chance for people to come in and show what they are made of and slot straight into the team. Hopefully someone can do that.
“Maybe I need to take more responsibility with those two players gone.”
There is also the option of moving Emre Can forward from defence, where he has excelled in a back three. The Germany Under-21 international was signed from Bayer Leverkusen with the intention of using him in midfield but circumstances dictated he was needed further back and he has not put a foot wrong so Brendan Rodgers may be reluctant to tinker with that.
“Emre has been outstanding since he came into the team,” added Henderson, speaking at the announcement of NIVEA MEN becoming the club’s official male grooming partner.
“I really think that position has suited him at the right side of the three at centre-half.
“He has been outstanding there, especially defensively as a midfielder dropping back, and in driving with the ball he shows his strength and power going forward.”
While Henderson is looking at doing even more in that central area to compensate for injuries at least he has the benefit of being comfortable in his role, having been used in his favoured position more times this season having previously been accommodated on the right and, occasionally, on the left.
“Wherever I play I always try to improve, whether that is out wide or through the middle,” he added. “I always give 100 per cent and I know each role I play really well so it doesn’t really matter what position I’m in.
“Of course being in the middle I am more comfortable and I am enjoying it there.”
He is also enjoying Liverpool’s current run in which they have lost only once – to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final – in 15 matches.
Last season Liverpool won 10 of their final 12 games, losing just once, as they fell agonisingly short of winning the title. Henderson is starting to get a similar feeling to the one he experienced 12 months ago, buoyed by the return to fitness of Daniel Sturridge and the positivity of recent performances.
“We have really knuckled down, worked hard on the training field, and grown in confidence,” he said.
“The longer you play together as team throughout the season the more confidence you build with each other and the more relationships you build.
“I think that has been important. I think it is really paying off at the minute, we are getting the results we need to.
“The aim is to keep going and keep building momentum and when you do that the confidence goes sky high – as we found out last year when we were going into every game knowing we were going to win.
“I can start sensing that sort of coming again with the performances we have been putting in, it has been fantastic for us as a team.
“You never know, we could go on another big run.”
Off the field the club are trying to tie Henderson down to a new contract, with his current deal having less than 18 months to run, but it is not something he is getting involved in. “Not really, no. I just want to concentrate on playing football and the other side of it I’ll let my agent deal with,” he said.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be missing from the squad to face Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the FA Cup after being ruled out for two to three weeks with a hamstring problem.
With Lucas Leiva already out for at least a month with a thigh problem it means Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen are likely to be paired in central midfield.
Forward Raheem Sterling, who missed the midweek league win over Tottenham with a foot injury, has to be assessed while youngster Jordon Ibe is cup-tied.
Provisional squad: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Markovic, Allen, Henderson, Moreno, Coutinho, Lallana, Sturridge, Jones, Ward, Johnson, Manquillo, Enrique, Borini, Lambert, Balotelli.

Brendan Rodgers has been spotted on a trip to Italy this week, and Jack Lusby selects Roma’s Miralem Pjanic among the players he should be looking at bringing to Anfield.
After Liverpool’s 3-2 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Brendan Rodgers left Anfield immediately to board a plane to Italy, leaving all media duties to assistant manager Colin Pascoe.
It could well just be an early Valentine’s Day trip for the Liverpool manager, spotted at the Vatican in Rome, but Pascoe’s suggestion that it was a “club matter” allows us room to speculate.
If Rodgers is in Italy to scout or hold talks with players or their representatives, there are plenty of names that would improve the Liverpool squad.
Roma playmaker Miralem Pjanic rounds off the list, but who else makes our five Serie A stars that Rodgers should be scouting on his February trip?
Mattia Perin (Genoa)
Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin has been long linked with a move to Liverpool, particularly during Simon Mignolet’s pre-2015 dip in form, and the 22-year-old would make an ideal challenger for the improving Belgian.
An admittedly raw prospect, this season Perin has shown glimpses of the talent that has drawn comparisons with the legendary Gianluca Buffon, whom he serves as deputy to for Italy.
Busy behind Genoa’s back line, Perin has made an average of 2.78 saves per goal conceded this season, much higher than Mignolet’s 1.73.
Furthermore, with a higher claim success rate of 95 percent to Mignolet 91 percent, Perin represents a more consistently confident commander in terms of dealing with crosses and lofted balls.
Perin has kept six clean sheets in 21 games this season, three less than Mignolet’s total in 23 games.
Paolo Dybala (Palermo)
At the other end of the pitch, Rodgers also needs to add quality and depth to his attacking ranks, and Palermo hotshot Paolo Dybala represents an exceptional young option to support first-choice striker Daniel Sturridge.
Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has bizarrely touted his young talent out throughout the season, and most recently claimed: “I will sell him, I am almost certain of this.”
Zamparini continued that “I’ve had so many offers for Dybala from half of the teams in Europe. Chelsea, PSG and other English and Spanish clubs,” perhaps suggesting why Rodgers may be moving so early.
Dybala is a busy, clinical 21-year-old centre-forward, who boasts some of the pure tenacity that hallmarks the best strikers in world football.
The striker has made an average of three dribbles per Serie A game this season, with only Raheem Sterling (3.1) making more in the Liverpool squad, and his 1.4 key passes per game would make him Liverpool’s joint-fourth most prolific creative player, alongside Philippe Coutinho.
With 11 goals and six assists in 21 games this season, Dybala’s combined goal output is second in Serie A, behind only Juventus’ sublime Carlos Tevez.
Radja Nainggolan (Roma)
Perhaps the area that Liverpool most desperately need strengthening in the summer, with the departure of Steven Gerrard, and questions over the long-term stability of Lucas Leiva in Rodgers’ first team.
Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has exactly the type of disciplined aggression that Rodgers should be targeting, as he has shown prowling ahead of the title-challengers’ defence this season.
An energetic defensive midfielder, Nainggolan would fit well into Rodgers’ high-intensity system, and has made an average of 2.8 tackles per game, more than all but two Liverpool players this term.
Nainggolan often keeps his passing simple, as with Lucas, preferring to offload onto a nearby playmaker—such as Pjanic, of course—and resume his own duties, but with an average of 1.2 key passes on average per game he is more than capable of spotting a creative opportunity.
In Nainggolan’s 20 Serie A games so far this season, Roma have conceded just 16 goals—a supreme rate, underlining the importance of an established defensive midfielder.
There are clear similarities between Nainggolan and former Liverpool destroyer Javier Mascherano.
Mateo Kovacic (Inter Milan)
Under Rodgers and FSG, Liverpool have shown proclivity towards signing high-potential young players for the first team, and there are few better in Europe than Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic—although his signing would be a big ask, given his recent contract renewal.
The Inter No. 10 has impressed throughout 2014/15 in an Inter side that has truly struggled, with four goals and an assist in 21 Serie A appearances.
A renowned talent in Europe after a promising spell as a 17-year-old in the Dimano Zagreb first team, Kovacic is an all-round midfielder, particularly with an assured passing style.
Kovacic’s defining quality, however, is perhaps his remarkable dribbling ability, with three dribbles on average per Serie A game this season again behind only Sterling (3.1), and his quick feet tight ball control suggests he would thrive in the fast-paced Premier League.
Kovacic could operate from a deeper position than Liverpool’s current virtuoso, Coutinho, alongside a defensive midfielder, and would provide even more creative zeal to the side.
A Coutinho-Kovacic tandem would promise some delectable football on Merseyside.
Miralem Pjanic (Roma)
Back to Roma and onto Pjanic, the 24-year-old playmaker is threatening to become one of the best in his position in the near future, and has been linked with a move to Liverpool since January.
At the time, Roma president James Pallotta acknowledged this interest, and suggested that a big-money offer would tempt him to sell: “If someone comes in with a stupid number for a player, you have to listen to it. You can’t just say no, no matter what.”
With Gerrard leaving in the summer, perhaps Liverpool have decided to go big for established quality.
Incredibly for a midfielder, Pjanic boasts an average passing accuracy of 91.2 percent in Serie A this season, which would place him joint-first alongside Martin Skrtel in the Liverpool squad—Jordon Ibe does have an average accuracy of 91.5 percent, but has made just two starts.
Furthermore, his rate of an assist every 330 minutes this season, with five in total, is better than any Liverpool player this season.
Like Kovacic, Pjanic could be the central midfield playmaker Liverpool target to replace Gerrard.
Which Serie A stars should Brendan Rodgers be targeting? Let us know in the comments below.

Emre Can says he is relishing regular football with Liverpool and is hoping to establish his place in supporters' hearts after writing on social media "I keep hearing that I am becoming a fans' favourite and it feels great".
The German, 21, initially struggled to make an impact at the Reds after becoming Liverpool's third signing of the summer transfer window in July 2014 when arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.
Since coming on as a substitute during Liverpool's Boxing Day win at Burnley, Can has clinched a regular spot, primarily operating on the right side of a three-man defence for Brendan Rodgers.
Supporters are even trying to come up with a song for him.
"I would be really happy about that," Can told the club website. "I haven't heard anything about a song, but if it did happen, I'd be delighted.
'Consistency'
"Liverpool have brilliant fans and they're always behind the team, both in good and bad times - and that is fantastic. I keep hearing that I am becoming a fans' favourite and it feels great.
"From my point of view, it doesn't matter where I play, the main thing is to be on the pitch where I can help the team.
"If I can help the team by playing in midfield, then I will play in midfield. If I am needed at the back, I will play in defence.
"I'm fitter now and it means I can perform. Luckily, the manager is playing me and I am gaining in confidence the more I play. Now I am looking to produce consistency in my game and good performances."
Can claims he would also relish a role as a leader on the pitch, especially after Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard leaves for Los Angeles in the summer.
"I am only 21 but I am the type of player that talks on the pitch," said Can. "That's the way I am and I have always been like that.
"I can't see myself changing; I think it's just my way that pushes me into taking on a leadership role on the pitch."

After Liverpool extended their unbeaten league run, WhoScored's Martin Laurence discusses the five key reasons for the Reds' recent resurgence.
Two of the league's in-form teams met on Tuesday night as Liverpool came out of their clash with Tottenham with their recent unbeaten streak intact. Indeed, it is now nine matches since the Reds last tasted defeat in the league - their closest rivals in terms of current streaks are on just four in comparison - with WhoScored.com pinpointing five key factors that have led to this upturn in fortunes.
1. The formation
Undoubtedly the feature of Liverpool's play in recent months that has the strongest correlation with their impressive run of form has been a switch to three at the back. A 1-0 defeat at Newcastle earlier in the season deploying that system was not enough to deter Brendan Rodgers to adopt the same tactic against Manchester United back in December. A 3-0 loss at the hands of their rivals that day could easily have dissuaded the Reds boss from lining up with a back three anytime soon but the Ulsterman was right to take encouragement despite a quite bizarre result, with David de Gea receiving a WhoScored rating of 9.08 courtesy of eight saves on the day.
Liverpool have, indeed, persisted with the same formation for their nine league encounters thereafter without tasting defeat. Having lost five of their 14 matches in the league when playing a back four the switch has clearly profited the side and while the increase in goals per game is relatively marginal between a back three (1.55) and back four (1.36), it's their defensive record that has most improved. Indeed, Liverpool have conceded 11 goals with a back three this season compared compared to 18 with a four-man defence.
2. Youth over experience at the back
The decision to play Emre Can out of position as a right centre-back has proven to be an inspired one, with the German youth international again in fine form as Liverpool dispatched of Spurs on Tuesday. It was another summer signing that began the season alongside Martin Skrtel at the back but a number of high-profile errors cost Dejan Lovren his place, with Can also leaping ahead of Kolo Toure in the pecking order after limited opportunities early in the campaign.
In seven Premier League starts at centre-back Can has earned a rating of 7.52 from WhoScored.com and while Mamadou Sakho has perhaps been a little less consistent, showing questionable technique in the tackle against Tottenham, alongside Skrtel the three have formed an imposing shield ahead of Simon Mignolet. It's Can, despite being the youngest, that has looked the most assured though, having not committed a single error that has directly led to an opposition shot. Meanwhile no player in the Premier League has committed more than Lovren (six), despite the fact that the Croat has started just 14 times.
3. Dropping the dropper has paid off
Rodgers took the bold decision to drop his number one keeper ahead of the aforementioned defeat to Manchester United, looking for a reaction from an out-of-form Simon Mignolet. While the Belgian only returned to the side in the first instance due to an injury to Brad Jones, Mignolet has not committed a single error leading directly to an opposition shot since returning to the side. His performances certainly haven't been without the odd hairy moment but some eye-catching stops akin to those that earned him a switch to Anfield have earned the keeper a rating of 6.77 from WhoScored in his last eight league appearances, compared to 6.61 beforehand.
4. Captain marvel's revelation
It was the news that Liverpool fans may have dreaded hearing for over a decade but Steven Gerrard's announcement that he would leave the club at the end of the season was one that seems to have been well-timed. Since the news broke at the turn of the year Rodgers has moved his captain around in the new formation, fielding Gerrard further forward at times to accommodate for the inclusion of Lucas Leiva. There seems to be less pressure on Gerrard in the current system, even when he does play in the middle of the park, and Rodgers has rested the club icon at the right times. The skipper has completed the 90 minutes just once in the league since making it known that he would be leaving in the summer.
5. Coutinho's class
He may not given the best account of himself against Tottenham, perhaps due to fitness concerns ahead of kick-off, but Philippe Coutinho has shone in recent months. After an excellent pre-season campaign the Brazilian looked short of form early on in the Premier League season. He is now in full, mesmerising flow. Up to and including their last defeat to United the 22-year-old had a meagre rating of just 6.70 from WhoScored.com from 13 appearances. From that point on his rating has soared to a magnificent 7.88, having seen his formerly lowly average figures for through balls (0.1), key passes (0.6) and shots (1.7) leap to 0.8, 2.4 and 3.3 respectively.

Coutinho and Can key to Reds revival

Brendan Rodgers’ Reds revisit bogey ground Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon for their fifth round FA Cup tie against Alan Pardew’s side. Ben Twelves discusses the team selection options available to the Liverpool boss.
In-form Liverpool put their pursuit of a top four challenge on hold this weekend, as the Reds turn their attentions back to their quest for FA Cup glory against a revitalised Crystal Palace in what promises to be another tricky tie.
The re-born Reds head south with clear minds – though not all memories erased from the last two horror visits to SE25 – following a huge improvement in performances and results which has seen Liverpool lose just twice in 21 matches since that appalling 3-1 league defeat in November – a score-line which proved to be the catalyst for the squad to regroup and move forward again.
Liverpool made hard work of overcoming Championship side Bolton in the last round and with fixtures of far more importance looming, Rodgers’ side will need to ensure the tie is settled on Saturday to avoid another unnecessary fixture being added to the already hectic schedule that sees the opening of the more important Europa League campaign next week.
While FA Cup glory would be a nice achievement, history shows its dwindling importance in the current football climate and with the need for Champions League football far greater and the cup competition bottom of Liverpool’s list of priorities, it is essential Rodgers makes sensible changes in preparation for hugely important fixtures against Besiktas and Southampton next week.
The Team
Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of Saturday’s match having undergone a scan on a hamstring issue sustained after playing three matches in a week, and the 34-year-old now joins Lucas Leiva on the treatment table – highlighting the importance of rotation.
Raheem Sterling is an injury doubt, while Philippe Coutinho has also been suffering from a knock. Rodgers therefore may look to rest at least one of those and start Adam Lallana in one of the two attacking midfield spots.
After a hugely successful African Nations Cup trip, Kolo Toure is yet to return to Anfield and therefore the Ivorian will not feature at the weekend – meaning Glen Johnson or Dejan Lovren will come into the back through should Emre Can move forward into a midfield role.
Alternatively, Rodgers could bring Joe Allen in alongside Henderson.
Jordon Ibe is cup-tied meaning the 18-year-old will be denied a third successive start and a space will open at wing-back or in the attack for Javi Manquillo, Adam Lallana or even midweek match-winner Mario Balotelli to enter the starting XI, but Daniel Sturridge could play from the beginning for the second match running as he attempts to rediscover the match sharpness that currently evades him.
The Starting XI
As we’ve seen throughout this competition this season, Rodgers will play a strong side – something Colin Pascoe confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Thursday.
Therefore, despite having big games against Besiktas and Southampton within a week of this fixture, we’re unlikely to see too many changes.
Rodgers may opt to rest one or two key players, meaning the likes of Fabio Borini could get an expected recall.
Surely Rodgers wouldn’t play Johnson in this game after he’s been torn apart on the Reds’ last two visits to Selhurst Park by Yannick Bolasie. So Lovren, if Can does move into midfield, would the one you’d expect to come into the side.
A strong XI, moving Can into midfield and resting Coutinho would look like:
Or keeping the back three unchanged and Sterling still being out injured, we could see:
Regardless of its significance, FA Cup victory is in Liverpool’s sights and with some of the Premier League big boys having already been eliminated, Saturday’s game presents the Reds with a big chance to take another step closer towards reaching Wembley.
