Real Madrid have confirmed they be without Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos for their Champions League trip to Liverpool on Wednesday.

Both players, who scored in last season’s 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final, have been left out of Carlo Ancelotti's squad due to injury.

Bale is also a major doubt for Saturday's first El Clasico of the season against Barcelona due to an abdominal muscle injury.

Ramos has missed the last three games for club and country due to a calf problem, but his absence is more precautionary ahead of the weekend’s clash at the Bernabeu.

French internationals Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane, who missed Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of Levante due to a fever, have been included in the squad that arrived in England on Tuesday morning.

Madrid are top Group B after winning their opening two games, and sit three points clear of Liverpool and Basel.

Even without Bale and Ramos, Madrid still represent a tough challenge with the Reds looking to work out how to deal with Cristiano Ronaldo who arrives at Anfield on the back of breaking at 71-year La Liga record by scoring 15 goals in the first eight matches of the season.

"He's a player off the charts. His evolution in recent years, the way how he has become a goalscorer has been amazing," Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers told Sky Sports’ Guillem Balague in an interview for Spanish newspaper AS.

"We need to know to stop him but there is danger in other parts of the field. You have (Luka) Modric, (Toni) Kroos - wonderful technicians who can play short, long.

"They have amazing talents all over the field and they have the technique to play in small spaces and when the space opens up there is no one better on the counter-attack in Ronaldo and Bale because, they are two players that could be in the Olympic 100 metres final.

"They are as strong a team now as they have been for many years. They have everything, big experience, big players, speed, technique and a great manager in (Carlo) Ancelotti, a good man who works with players and who is a good person.

"And they are the reigning champions as well and they will want to defend their title."

The day after Liverpool and Real Madrid were drawn together in Champions League group B, former Reds’ midfielder and fans favourite Xabi Alonso left Madrid for Bayern Munich.

Alonso was in the Liverpool starting 11 that beat Madrid 4-0 at Anfield back in 2009, but left the club later that summer, joining the Spanish side for £30 million.

In those intervening years, Liverpool have only been in the Champions League for one season, meaning Alonso has yet to return to play against his former side.

He was joined in Madrid by full-back Alvaro Arbeloa, another who played in that memorable 4-0 win back in March 2009, and his Spanish team mate has explained how Alonso bemoaned his luck after the draw this August.

“I spoke to him after the draw and he was fuming, “How bad is my luck? I can’t believe it” or words to that effect,” explained Arbeloa in an interview with The Daily Mail.

“He was a marvellous player who won the European Cup with them. People loved him there and I think they would have paid him a wonderful tribute.”

MORE - Arbeloa: “Champions League nights and big games like this one at Anfield are very special.”

Arbeloa also recalled how close the Reds came to winning the league that year, “We would have won the league had it not been for [Federico] Macheda,” he recalled. Liverpool fans still have nightmares about that goal against Villa now.

“We were so close. There were a lot of games where we kicked-off before Manchester United and we would board our flight home and they were losing and we would get off the plane to the news that they had staged a comeback.”

Sergio Aguero: Superb start to the season for Manchester City

Sergio Aguero: Superb start to the season for Manchester City

Sergio Aguero's scoring record, Mario Balotelli's continuing bad form and Man Utd's leaky defence feature in our review of the weekend stats.

We look at the statistics from a Premier League weekend which saw top three Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton win, the latter convincingly so as they thrashed Sunderland 8-0.

Manchester United could only draw 2-2 at West Brom on Monday evening, with West Ham now in fourth spot after their victory at Burnley.

The Clarets remain ahead of QPR at the other end after Liverpool's dramatic win at Loftus Road, while Newcastle also remain in the relegation zone despite a 1-0 win over Leicester.

Manchester City 4 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Sergio Agüero has netted nine goals in six Premier League appearances against Tottenham, more than against any other team.

Agüero (61) has gone clear of Carlos Tévez (58) as Manchester City's leading Premier League scorer.

Aguero has scored 61 goals in only 95 Premier League appearances. The next highest scoring player with fewer than 100 PL apps is Demba Ba (43).

Agüero became the second player after Edin Dzeko to score four goals in a Premier League game for Manchester City - both did so against Spurs.

Frank Lampard has 102 Premier League assists. Only Ryan Giggs (162) has more.

Tottenham have conceded the most Premier League penalties in 2014 (nine).

Spurs have scored three times in the opening 15 minutes of Premier League games this season - they did so only once in 2013-14.

Manchester City have conceded in four consecutive Premier League home games for the first time since May - September 2012.

Spurs had 10 shots at goal in the first half (including blocks), the most by any team against Manchester City in the Premier League this season - no team had more than 10 last season (Southampton, 07/12/2013).

Aguero's third goal was the 200th goal of the 2014-15 Premier League season.

Four penalties were awarded in a Premier League game for only the second time (Bradford v Derby, April 2000).

Federico Fazio became the first player to be sent off on his Premier League debut since Samba Diakite for QPR in February 2012.

Jon Moss has given 28 penalties in the Premier League, eight of them (29%) to Manchester City (next highest, QPR: 3).

Arsenal 2 Hull City 2

Five of Alexis Sanchez's six goals for Arsenal in all competitions have come at home.

The Chilean also collected his first Premier League assist since the opening day (v Crystal Palace) for Welbeck's equaliser. Indeed he is the first Arsenal player to assist two Premier League goals this term.

Per Mertesacker assisted Sanchez's opener; it was his first PL assist in his 97th appearance in the competition.

Arsenal have led at half-time in just four of their last 17 Premier League games.

Mohamed Diame has scored four goals in five Premier League games for Hull City. He has never scored more than four in a single PL season (also four in 35 games in 2013/14).

The Gunners have only kept one clean sheet in their last eight league games and have gone four without one at the Emirates.

Danny Welbeck scored his first Premier League goal at home since January (Man Utd v Swansea); he has scored four in his last two at the Emirates in all competitions.

The Gunners have won just one of their last seven Premier League matches (W1 D5 L1); this after winning their previous six in a row.

The Tigers have won just one of their last 13 Premier League trips to London (W1 D3 L9).

Eleven points from eight games is Arsenal's second-worst start to a PL season under Arsene Wenger (10 from eight in 2011/12).

Burnley 1 West Ham United 3

West Ham's match against Burnley was their 700th in the Premier League - they are the ninth team to reach this milestone.

Mark Noble made his 200th Premier League appearance for West Ham in this match - only Steve Potts (203) has made more.

Diafra Sakho has scored in all six starts he has made for West Ham in all competitions, with five of these in the Premier League.

Sakho is only the second West Ham player to score in five consecutive Premier League games, after Carlton Cole.

Aaron Cresswell collected his first Premier League assist; the left-back assisted 12 in the Championship last season.

West Ham have now scored six headed goals this season, a league-high. Sahko, meanwhile, has scored a league-high three headers.

Burnley scored a home goal for the first time since August 18 against Chelsea. George Boyd's strike ended a run of 406 minutes without a goal for them at Turf Moor in all comps.

West Ham became the first team to score three headed goals in a PL game since Norwich v Newcastle in December 2011.

West Ham have won four of their first eight Premier League games of 2014-15 - they won just four of their opening 23 PL matches last season.

Crystal Palace 1 Chelsea 2

Chelsea are now unbeaten in 11 Premier League matches, winning nine and drawing two.

Chelsea have lost just one of their last 16 Premier League London derbies (W11 D4 L1).

This was only the second Premier League game to see two red cards this season (after West Ham v Tottenham).

Cesc Fabregas has been involved in eight goals (one goal, seven assists) in eight Premier League games for Chelsea.

Oscar's two Premier League goals this season have come in the opening seven minutes of games.

This was only the 12th time in Premier League history that both teams were reduced to 10 men before half-time.

Loic Remy only hit one shot in 91 minutes of play.

Chelsea had 72% possession in this game, their highest figure this season and the fifth highest recorded in the division in 2014-15.

Everton 3 Aston Villa 0

Everton have lost only one of their last 12 Premier League meetings with Aston Villa (W4 D7).

Villa have lost four successive Premier League matches without scoring a single goal.

Villa had two shots on target in this game, taking their total to 12 for the season.

Aston Villa have failed to score in four successive Premier League games for the first time since November 2013.

Paul Lambert has never won a Premier League game against a side managed by Roberto Martinez (D3 L4).

With two assists in this game, Leighton Baines has surpassed his total in the Premier League in the whole of 2013-14 (had four last season, has five so far in 2014-15).

Seamus Coleman has scored eight goals since the start of last season, more than any other defender in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku has scored three goals in his last five Premier League games.

Newcastle United 1 Leicester City 0

Gabriel Obertan scored his first Premier League goal for Newcastle since Feb 1, 2012 - ending a run of 24 PL apps without one.

It was Obertan's first goal in 21 Premier League appearances at St James' Park.

Newcastle netted the opening goal in a Premier League game for the first time this season.

Papiss Demba Cissé has had a hand in five goals in his last four Premier League appearances for the Magpies (four goals, one assist).

Newcastle United ended a run of eight successive Premier League games without a win (D4 L4) with this victory.

Leicester City have scored just one goal in their four Premier League away games this season - only QPR have scored as few on the road this term.

Southampton 8 Sunderland 0

Sunderland have scored eight own goals in the Premier League since the start of 2013-14, more than any other side.

Graziano Pellè has been involved in seven goals in his last six Premier League appearances (six goals, one assist).

Pellè has scored in three successive Premier League home games for Southampton; he is the first player to do so since Peter Crouch in February 2005.

Dusan Tadic has assisted a goal in three successive Premier League appearances at St Mary's Stadium (six assists in total).

Southampton scored 5+ goals in a Premier League game for the first time since their famous 6-3 win over Manchester United in October 1996.

Tadic has been involved in 65 goals (29 goals, 36 assists) in 74 league appearances (Dutch Eredivisie and Premier League combined) since the start of 2012-13.

Tadic became the first player to get four assists in a single Premier League appearance since Santi Cazorla (4) versus Wigan for Arsenal in May 2013.

Tadic was the sixth player to assist four Premier League goals in a game (after Bergkamp, Reyes, Fabregas, Adebayor and Cazorla).

Southampton have only conceded five league goals all season, three fewer than any other side in the top four tiers of English football.

Southampton's 8-0 win was their biggest margin of victory in a league match since December 1921 (8-0 versus Northampton Town).

Sunderland suffered their biggest defeat in league football since a 8-0 defeat at Watford in September 1982.

QPR 2 v Liverpool 3

Harry Redknapp has won just five of his 33 Premier League games in charge of QPR (D10 L18).

Under Redknapp, QPR have lost seven and won none (D2) of their nine PL games on a Sunday, losing each of their last six.

Liverpool have gone 48 Premier League games without a goalless draw, the longest current run of any side.

Richard Dunne has now scored 10 own goals in the Premier League, making him the first to reach double figures.

Leroy Fer has struck the woodwork three times so far this season, the most in the Premier League.

QPR have yet to score in the opening 30 minutes this season, a joint Premier-League-low with Newcastle United.

Liverpool have kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 Premier League matches.

Five of QPR's six Premier League goals have come via set pieces this season.

Mario Balotelli has scored just one goal in his last 22 Premier League appearances, despite attempting 73 shots (inc. blocked) in these games.

This is the first time in Premier League history that Liverpool have benefited from two own goals in the same game.

Stoke City 2 Swansea City 1

Stoke City have won seven of their last 10 Premier League matches at the Britannia Stadium (L3).

There were as many goals scored on Sunday (3) as there were in the previous three PL games at the Britannia this season.

Swansea City have won only one of their last 13 Premier League games played on a Sunday (L8 D4).

The Swans are winless in five Premier League games (L3 D2), this after winning their previous four in a row.

No player has conceded more penalties since the start of the 2008/09 season than Ryan Shawcross (7).

Both of Charlie Adam's goals from the penalty spot for Stoke City have come against Swansea City.

The Swans have kept just one clean sheet in their last 20 away Premier League games.

Wilfried Bony has scored three goals against Stoke City, against no other PL side has he bagged more.

Oussama Assaidi provided his first Premier League assist in 27 appearances for Stoke and Liverpool combined.

West Bromwich Albion 2 Manchester United 2

Manchester United have kept only two clean sheets in nine competitive games under Louis Van Gaal - these came against two newly promoted sides (Burnley and QPR).

Stephane Sessegnon scored only his fourth goal in 19 Premier League appearances in 2014 - three of which have come at the Hawthorns.

Marouane Fellaini's goal came just two minutes and 35 seconds after coming on for Manchester United at half-time; the second fastest goal by a sub in the Premier League this season.

Fellaini's goal was his first in 24 competitive appearances for Manchester United.

Fellaini failed to score with any of his 18 shots for Manchester United in the whole of 2013-14 (all comps), but he scored with his first in 2014-15.

Angel Di Maria has assisted a goal in four of his last five Premier League appearances for Man Utd.

Overall, Di Maria has been involved in seven goals in six Premier League appearances for the club (three goals, four assists).

Saido Berahino has scored seven goals in 10 competitive apps for WBA this season, with six of these coming at the Hawthorns.

Berahino is the top scoring English player in the Premier League this season (six goals).

Manchester United have not won any of the 11 Premier League games that they have been losing at half-time in 2014 (L8 D3).

West Brom have not won any of their last 11 home league meetings with Manchester United (L9 D2).

Mario Balotelli: Should be dropped, says Carra

Mario Balotelli: Should be dropped, says Carra

Jamie Carragher admits Liverpool "can't have any passengers" against Real Madrid; so would drop Mario Balotelli in the Champions League clash.

The former Reds defender has urged Brendan Rodgers to drop the striker, who has scored only once in nine appearances since his £16million summer move from AC Milan, and play Raheem Sterling further forward.

Liverpool are third in Group B after losing to Basel three weeks ago and Carragher believes they need a result in front of a sold-out Anfield on Wednesday night if they are to get through to the last 16.

And he says that could mean giving the ineffectual Balotelli the chop.

"He doesn't run around enough," Carragher explained on Monday Night Football.

"Against Real Madrid you've got to get that crowd going. You need to get back to Liverpool of last year and that pressing. There's got to be an energy about Liverpool that we haven't seen; we've seen it once this season at Spurs.

"It's going on too long now and we can't keep waiting. It's a huge game and Liverpool have to get something from it.

"I would put Raheem Sterling in there because he can run in behind and Liverpool may have to counter-attack a lot of the game. Madrid may have a lot of the ball.

Raheem Sterling should be most prominent forward, says Jamie Carragher

"Sterling can also press from the front. He doesn't have to play right up front and he can come back and help the midfield.

"They can't have any passengers against Real Madrid."

Carragher wants to see Philippe Coutinho brought in to the team to offer width on the right wing with Adam Lallana supporting Sterling from the left.

And he says it's important to have an energetic front line to build on the electric atmosphere that the home fans are likely to generate.

"The decision I would make would be to bring Coutinho in for Balotelli. I wouldn't play Balotelli in this game.

"I would play Raheem Sterling, whether you'd call it a centre-forward or a false nine. I think it's important Liverpool have three players [in front of Gerrard] who work and get after Real Madrid and then Sterling, if he's off the front, can run in behind people. I'd have Coutinho in a wide area.

"I think they can [get something from the game], but it's how Brendan Rodgers sets up.

"You've got to get Anfield bouncing. There's got to be an energy and intensity about Liverpool and enthusiasm."
