The Reds captain's announcement that he will end an association with his boyhood club this summer which began when he was eight years old has brought glowing tributes from far and wide.

He has expressed a wish to return in some capacity in the future and there is already an open invitation on the table from Henry and Werner.

As part of Fenway Sports Group they took over the club in 2010 with Gerrard's best years already behind him but that did not mean they do not recognise the significance of his impending departure.

"His contribution to the club is almost beyond measure and it's testimony to his influence, that despite Liverpool having such a long and distinguished list of legendary figures, the name Steven Gerrard will always be at the summit," said the pair in a statement.

"There is sadness that such a great player and person is leaving and won't be playing for Liverpool beyond this season.

"But there is also a sense of celebration and gratitude, that we've all been privileged to watch and work with one of the true greats, not just of this club, but the game in general.

"I hope we all respect that Steven and his family want to pursue something new and different for the final years of his playing career.

"We all wish him well in this endeavour and look forward to welcoming him back to Anfield in the future, when the time is appropriate.

"Steven will always have a part to play for this club, as and when the time comes that he wishes to return."

Gerard Houllier thinks Steven Gerrard will one day return to Anfield to manage Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 19, 2003: Liverpool's manager Ge?rard Houllier celebrates a 2-1 victory over Everton with captain Stephen Gerrard after the Merseyside Derby Premiership match at Goodison Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Follow @thisisanfield on Twitter for live LFC updates, news, competitions and videos:

Gerrard announced on Friday that his 17-year spell at Liverpool will come to an end in the summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder looks set to end his playing career in the United States and then return to the Merseyside club, possibly in a coaching role.

Announcing his decision on Friday morning, the Reds captain said it was his "sincere hope and wish" to "return to serve Liverpool again, in whatever capacity best helps the club".'

And Houllier, who managed Gerrard at Liverpool for six years, believes the Anfield skipper could well be in charge of first-team affairs at the club in the future.

"I would not be surprised if we saw him become the boss at Anfield," Houllier told Sky Sports News.

"That would be very good. He has always been good around the team – he is someone who likes to think about the team first and I wouldn't be surprised if he became a very successful manager one day."

Another of Houllier's former players Jamie Carragher said Liverpool should have pulled out all the stops to keep Gerrard at the club.

But the Frenchman insists Gerrard has made the correct call in leaving the Merseyside club.

"I think Stevie has done the right thing," Houllier said.

"He has a break from Liverpool and maybe he will get through his different qualifications outside training to become a manager."

Houllier gave Gerrard his debut in 1998 and handed the Englishman the captain's armband when he was just 22 years old.

Gerrard helped Houllier win the FA Cup, the League Cup twice and the UEFA Cup during his time at Liverpool and he will always remember the midfielder fondly.

"He's a great leader, someone who inspires," Houllier said.

"He's a kind-hearted, generous person. He's a great personality and character.

"He was outstanding for Liverpool in terms of technique, speed and power. He had an excellent eye for a pass.

"He understood he had to live for his job and not use his job to live.

"He devoted his time and energy and diet for the job and that's why he was world class. He made a lot of sacrifices. He had outstanding qualities, talent but he worked very hard on the back of that and that's why he has been successful.

"It's something Liverpool will miss."

Steven Gerrard’s incredible 17-year career at Anfield is drawing to a close as reports were confirmed on Friday morning that the sipper is set to leave the club at the end of the season. The timing is right, writes Ben Twelves.

Gerrard’s illustrious Liverpool career is set to come to an end at the end of the season with the inspirational Captain announcing he will leave his boyhood club after an unrivalled service.

15-plus years of carrying the club almost single-handedly have undoubtedly taken its toll on Gerrard – who in recent times has been a pale shadow of the all-action midfield powerhouse that propelled him to world class recognition.

No matter what your view of the worn 34-year-old is currently, there can be no denying just what a player he has been for the club throughout his tenure, with an increasing number labelling him the greatest ever to wear the red shirt above King Kenny, and there can be no denying that his departure will be a sad day as Liverpool lose a monumental figure.

The Time is Right

Time and time again, for season on season, Gerrard was the go-to man. From the standout moment against Olympiakos over 10 years ago, to Basel at the beginning of last month – where it was his arrowed free-kick that provided that ray of hope once more – Gerrard, despite his diminishing powers has always been the man to turn to.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the equalising goal against FC Basel to level the score 1-1 during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

But despite that trademark Gerrard free-kick, and two successful spot kicks on New Year’s Day, plenty of other performances have illustrated that he is no longer the miracle worker of old. His presence and performances in the side have sadly become detrimental to the team – typified with the contrast in the displays and results from the win over Swansea without him and Thursday’s draw with Leicester with him.

The legs that have carried his – more often than not – vastly inferior team-mates on too many occasions to remember, can no longer allow the captain to perform consistently at the level required and with Brendan Rodgers refusing to manage the 34-year-old properly with his influence in open play dwindling, only not having Gerrard available for selection will give Rodgers the message.

The events of last season against Chelsea in the title run-in have haunted the club’s greatest ever player and it seems he’s yet to get over it, wanting to do more than ever before to make up for the brutal ending of Liverpool’s title hopes, but it simply won’t happen as his decline gathers momentum.

Performances in recent times from the Skipper – while still boasting certain moments of magic – have reached the stage where at times it’s become hard to watch the club legend and his incredible reputation while far from being forgotten, has taken a hit with many frustrated at his continued inclusion in the side.

It would be completely ridiculous and bordering on insulting for anyone to think back to Steven Gerrard by anything other than the rescue acts he continually performed and leading the Reds to honours beyond wildest dreams and that is why – before any further deterioration can happen by staying for a further year – the time is right.

Moving Forward

Liverpool Football Club begin their move into a new era without Gerrard’s influence and while it will certainly take some getting used to, the ending needs to happen for the club to progress once more.

The Kop legends’ departure means there will be no more relying on him to drag the team to victory again but instead his absence will provide a huge opportunity for someone to step into Gerrard’s historic boots with no more hiding places or backseats behind the club icon.

There will only be one Steven Gerrard – a truly once in a lifetime player – but the moment has come for others to step up to the plate and prove that they are the man to lead the club again.

Conclusion

As with almost everything, there have been numerous highs and lows throughout Gerrard’s Anfield career – with most of the highs coming through his own miraculous work – and despite ample opportunities to leave with Liverpool continually struggling, he never once turned his back.

Steven Gerrard will deservedly go down as Liverpool Football Club’s greatest ever player for his unparalleled service on the field of Anfield Road, but the end of the season is the right time for his sad and historic departure.

Gerard Houllier was not surprised to hear Steven Gerrard call time on his Liverpool career, but would like to see the midfielder become the club's manager in the future.

Speaking on the morning Liverpool confirmed the talismanic midfielder would leave the club at the end of the season, the former Liverpool manager suggested Gerrard’s leadership skills could see him make the transition to dug-out.

The Frenchman, who handed Gerrard his Liverpool debut in 1998 before making him club captain in 2002, gave his reaction to the news he was set to end his 17-year association with the Merseyside club.

“I was half surprised by the news because I knew that he wanted a new challenge but he’s at an age now where he has to look at his future after football,” he told the Morning View.

“I know Stevie, he wouldn’t play against Liverpool. He wants to do something different. He didn’t want to stay in the Premier League so I was not totally surprised he’s decided to go.

“He was a leader for the club, he was somebody who inspired, somebody the players wanted to follow and nobody will ever forget the Champions League final in 2005.

"He likes to think about the team first. He was a good team-mate and that will be something Liverpool will miss, not only the man and leader but the good camaraderie around him.

“Maybe Stevie has done the right thing in having a break from Liverpool. Perhaps he will get through his qualifications and training to become a manager. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day we see him become the boss at Anfield. That would be very pleasing to see.”

Houllier praised Gerrard’s commitment from a young age and explained how his desire, coupled with his unique personality, elevated him to become one of the world's, and Liverpool’s, greatest midfielders, prompting the Frenchman to hand him the armband.

“We spotted him in an U19 game and we asked him to join the first team,” Houllier added.

“We could see in training that he was quickly developing. I played him at right back in the beginning but his role and best position was in midfield.

“He understood that he had to live for his job, and not to use his job to live. He devoted everything for football and that’s why he was successful. He became world class because he made a lot of sacrifices.

“He was an outstanding player for Liverpool in terms of technique, speed and power. He combined the three and not only was he good in the tackle but he was excellent for the pass and had an eye for the final decision.

“His personality made him the player he is. We know he’s a world class player because of his technique but his character and personality stood out very quickly and that’s why I made him captain at the end of 2002.”

John Aldridge is also of the same opinion:

Former striker Peter Crouch says Gerrard is “easily” the best he’s ever played with:

Didi Hamann, speaking like a fan, thanked Gerrard for the memories he’s provided:

Meanwhile, former midfielder Jamie Redknapp, writing in his Daily Mail column, somewhat bizarrely suggests his dad, Harry Redknapp, would welcome Gerrard back to England on loan after his likely MLS move.

Redknapp admits that he would have loved to had Gerrard’s career: “If there is one player I would have liked to have been it is Steven Gerrard. I feel very proud and honoured to have been on the same pitch as him.”

On whether Gerrard is Liverpool’s greatest ever player, Redknapp writes:

“When you talk about Liverpool’s greatest players, you think about Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness; but they were surrounded by other fantastic players.”

Steven Gerrard has carried Liverpool. He has been the captain, leader and inspiration for some poor teams.”

Liverpool dropped two potentially valuable points at home to struggling Leicester City on New Year’s Day, and Henry Jackson discusses five topics of debate from the 2-2 draw at Anfield.

It’s fair to say that it was far from an ideal start to 2015 for the Reds, who despite leading 2-0 at half-time against Nigel Pearson’s side, gave away two quickfire second-half goals to surrender that position of dominance. There is an argument to say Brendan Rodgers‘ men were fortunate to even earn a point in the end.

Liverpool’s performance was lacking from start to finish, and had nowhere near the pace and zip of their brilliant 4-1 win over Swansea City on Monday night.

Although eight points from the Reds’ four Christmas matches is a pretty decent return, they appeared to run out of steam somewhat against the Foxes, with the busy run of fixtures seemingly taking its toll on a few players. It should really have been 10 points from a possible 12 had Rodgers rotated a little better.

Arsenal’s defeat to Southampton means Liverpool are only four points behind the Gunners though, while Tottenham and the Saints are five and seven points ahead of the Reds, respectively. It will likely be a straight fight between those four teams for the final Champions League spot this season.

Here are five talking points from the draw with Leicester:-

Steven Gerrard‘s performance

The news that Gerrard is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season has hit many Reds fanatics hard, but prior to that hammer blow last night, he was receiving more abuse than any other player for his performance against the Foxes.

Having been rested against Swansea, the 34-year-old came back into the side alongside Lucas Leiva, but he had an extremely disappointing afternoon.

While he may have been as ruthless as ever from the penalty spot, scoring twice, his overall contribution was lacking throughout, and Liverpool had absolutely no drive in the middle of the park.

The skipper won just 25 per cent of his duels, according to Squawka, and his trademark long-range passes didn’t come off, as has been the case so much this season.

Defensively he never looked comfortable, and although it may be painful to admit for some who have grown up adoring him, there was little point in him being on the pitch.

It’s very sad that Gerrard is leaving, but the time is right. His influence on the side has diminished significantly in 2014/15.

Jordan Henderson‘s change of position

Henderson was fantastic against Swansea on Monday, having been switched back to his preferred midfield role. He played a key part in two of Liverpool’s goals, and his pace, energy and drive gave his side an extra dimension in midfield. It was the Henderson of last season.

Rodgers inexplicably decided to put him back to wing-back against Leicester, however, in order to accommodate the returning Gerrard. It was a terrible decision on so many levels.

It is clear to see that Gerrard and Lucas playing together makes for one of Liverpool’s most one-paced midfields in history, whereas Henderson offers constant box-to-box running.

He created four chances, had a passing accuracy of 86 per cent and won 50 per cent of his duels in midfield against the Swans, while his respective statistics at wing-back against the Foxes were two, 67 per cent and 40 per cent.

The 24-year-old is completely wasted at wing-back, and does not look remotely comfortable there. He is a player who will always give his all in every position, but there can be no doubting which role he really thrives in.

Raheem Sterling‘s tiredness

Sterling has played more minutes than any other Premier League player this season, including internationals, and it is really starting to show.

The 20-year-old has been showing glimpses of his top form in recent weeks, but against the Foxes he looked like he didn’t have much more to give.

His intensity simply wasn’t there, and even his sensational burst of pace seemed to elude him on a couple of occasions. One through-ball from Philippe Coutinho looked perfect for Sterling to run onto, but goalkeeper Ben Hamer got to the ball first with relative ease.

Rodgers is in a difficult position, in fairness. He knows how important Sterling is in terms of getting results, and resting him would be a risk on his part.

He has to be aware of over-playing him though, and if he’s not careful, the young star could easily pick up a Michael Owen-esque hamstring injury and his career could suffer badly because of it. Playing him for yet another full 90 minutes was madness.

Rodgers’ reluctance to rest Sterling is pretty damning on the likes of Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini, who are natural strikers. He clearly doesn’t trust them to deliver in the absence of his speedy talisman.

The England international simply has to be left out against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup on Monday, in order to recharge his batteries.

Fabio Borini‘s introduction

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Thursday, New Year's Day, January 1, 2015: Liverpool's Fabio Borini is brought down by Leicester City's captain Wes Morgan but no penalty was awarded during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

When Adam Lallana limped off early in the second-half, with Liverpool 2-0 up, Rodgers rather bemusingly decided to replace him with Borini.

The Italian is a player who divides opinion greatly at Anfield, but the fact of the matter is he’s contributed very little whenever he has played this season.

Within minutes of his introduction it was 2-2, and although neither Leicester goal was remotely his fault, his introduction seemed to disrupt things.

Quite why Lazar Markovic wasn’t brought on instead, considering his good recent form, is a mystery, and there is definitely an argument to say Mario Balotelli should also have been a better option too.

Borini’s second-half cameo was very forgettable. He missed a glorious opportunity to win it for the Reds, but fired over from close-range, while he frustratingly got in the way of Coutinho’s goal-bound effort late in the day.

The 23-year-old is far from good enough to be a Liverpool player- his level is Sunderland, as he showed last season- and Rodgers’ decision to make him his first substitution was a poor one.

Mamadou Sakho‘s display

One of the biggest plus points at Anfield over the last few weeks has been the return of Sakho to the Liverpool side.

Since coming back into the team against Arsenal, the 24-year-old has excelled, looking far and away the Reds’ most accomplished defender.

He has his detractors- there are some who seem to rather lazily assume that, because he looks a little gangly, he must be rubbish- but he was superb once again against Pearson’s men.

The France international had a very impressive passing accuracy of 92 per cent, some of which were very incisive, thoughtful passes, and he made no defensive errors.

His general dominance, both in the air and in one-on-one duels, was terrific, and he made a brilliant block to deny David Nugent making it 3-2 to the visitors in the second-half.

Liverpool are unbeaten since Sakho came back into the side in place of Dejan Lovren, and it’s no coincidence that they suddenly look better in defence.

Admittedly, they are still far from perfect in that area, and Sakho does have to shoulder a small proportion of that blame, but he has done far more good than bad.

As Steven Gerrard confirms his intention to leave Liverpool when his contract expires in the summer, Jeff Goulding pens his own small tribute to the man who has embodied the club.

The Anfield Road end has a lot in common with the Wirral. They both have great views. One gazes at the finest waterfront in the world, the other at the greatest football terrace in all of football. It was from a seat in the Anfield Road end that I was privileged to witness the goal Steven Gerrard regarded as his best ever. What a hit son!

It was of course his 84th minute strike against Olympiakos that set us on our way to Istanbul. Another big goal on a big night, and just when Liverpool needed it. He lifted us time and time again. So if there was going to be any player to spark that comeback in the Ataturk Stadium it was absolutely going to be Steven Gerrard.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND- WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 8th 2004: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard scores the winning goal, and his side's third, against Olympiakos during the UEFA Champions League Group A match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Proparganda)

In years to come it will be a source of disappointment to Gerrard that he never lifted the Premier League title. All of us wanted to see him do it last year. Indeed it seemed all of football wanted him to, such is the regard he is held in. He is simply the greatest player to have not won that medal, and for a spell of 5 years he would have walked into any team in world football. Even now there will be a queue of clubs vying for his signature.

Gerrard could have left in 2005 and many times since. He undoubtedly would have won titles wherever he played, but he chose to stay. Winning medals for Liverpool meant more than winning them anywhere else. It was Chelsea and Mourinho who came closest to taking him away.

Who can forget that morning when Rick Parry, confronted by a Sky reporter, broke the news “Steven’s decided to stay”. Jamie Carragher later said he spat his cornflakes out as he watched the story unfold at breakfast. Most of us greeted the news like we’d just won a cup. It was actually far more important than that.

Steven Gerrard was Liverpool Football Club. He was a Liddell or a Dalglish, because he embodied the spirit and ethos of the institution. They named the team Liddellpool after Billy Liddell, and for Steven Gerrard they renamed an FA cup final. As a childhood Kenny Dalglish disciple, I have no qualms in declaring now that Stevie is the greatest player to pull on the red shirt.

Our legendary number seven never had to suffer being surrounded by mediocrity. Gerrard did for many a season, yet he still managed to elevate the club beyond its station. He won every cup it was possible for him to win, and scored in every cup final. In all he amassed ten major honours, including 2 FA cups, 3 League Cups, the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. He was also a three times runner up in the Premier League. He may yet add more medals to that haul. I hope he does.

To us he will always be our captain, a Scouser and a red. He has achieved what we all dream of, and done it with distinction. His name will echo through history. He is a true legend of Liverpool Football Club. This may be the end of an era, but I am privileged that I was alive when Steven Gerrard played for Liverpool.

Good Luck Stevie You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has confirmed he is to leave Anfield at the end of the season after making the "toughest decision of his life" to leave his boyhood club.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 16, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the second goal after his injury time penalty sealed a 2-1 victory over PFC Ludogorets Razgrad during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The midfielder, who turns 35 in May, has been with the Reds since the age of eight and even though he was offered a new deal to extend his contract beyond the summer he has chosen to seek a new challenge.

"This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time," he told liverpoolfc.com.

"I am making the announcement now so that the manager and the team are not distracted by stories or speculation about my future.

"Liverpool Football Club has been such a huge part of all our lives for so long and saying goodbye is going to be difficult, but I feel it's something that's in the best interests of all involved, including my family and the club itself.

"I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool – that is something I could never contemplate."

Gerrard has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer for some time and a move to the United States would appeal to him and his family but there is also reported to be interest from the Middle East.

"My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over," he added.

"I can't thank Brendan (Rodgers), the owners and everyone at the club enough for how they've handled this and I am leaving on great terms.

"Also, I would like to thank my team-mates and all the staff for their help and continued support.

"It is a very special place to be part of. It is my sincere hope and wish that one day I can return to serve Liverpool again, in whatever capacity best helps the club.

"One point that is important to make is that from now until the last kick of the last game of the season, I will be as fully committed to the team as I ever have been and giving everything I have to help Liverpool win games.

"My final message is for the people who make Liverpool Football Club the greatest in the world – the supporters.

"It has been a privilege to represent you, as a player and as captain.

"I have cherished every second of it and it is my sincere wish to finish this season and my Liverpool career on a high."

This season Gerrard has seen his pitch time reduced as manager Rodgers has tried to carefully look after his captain, admitting he cannot play three matches in a week to the level either of them would want.

Last season Rodgers employed him in a deeper holding midfield role which, combined with the attacking talents of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, almost saw Gerrard lift the league title he desperately craves as the one club honour missing from his extensive trophy cabinet.

Rodgers has continually praised Gerrard for the influence he has on and off the field and he was not hiding his admiration for him following Friday's announcement.

"It is almost an impossible task to find the words to appropriately sum up Steven Gerrard and his importance to Liverpool," said Rodgers.

"This is an era where the word 'legend' is vastly overused, but in his case it actually doesn't do him justice.

"From a personal point of view I will always have gratitude for the support he gave me, when I arrived here as manager.

"As a player he is immense and the influence he has on games should never be understated.

"At times he has carried this club on his back and in my time here he has always shown the ability that has rightly seen him be regarded as one of the world's best for well over a decade.

"As a leader and as a man, he is probably incomparable to anyone I have ever worked with.

"He takes professionalism to a new level and the dedication he has to his work is an example to everyone in the game.

"People better placed than me to judge have said Steven is Liverpool's greatest ever player; when you look at the company he is in, that is some statement.

"We of course will miss him, both on the field of play and in his capacity as club captain, but his influence will live on and we wish him nothing but joy and success wherever he chooses to go next.

"Until that moment arrives I will continue to enjoy working with Steven Gerrard the man and Steven Gerrard the player, one of the greatest we have seen."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has paid tribute to Steven Gerrard after the Reds captain confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season.

Gerrard’s 17-year career at Anfield will come to a close in May, with the MLS the most likely destination for the Reds legend after a club statement confirmed he will leave the United Kingdom.

The 34-year-old confirmed on Friday morning the news he will be leaving Merseyside and Rodgers was quick to praise the influence of a player he describes as “immense.”

"It is almost an impossible task to find the words to appropriately sum up Steven Gerrard and his importance to Liverpool,” Rodgers told the club’s official website.

"From a personal point of view I will always have gratitude for the support he gave me, when I arrived here as manager.

"Steven came to see me and promised he would be 100 per cent behind me and do everything he could to help as we looked to introduce new ideas and a new way of working.

"He wasn't just true to his word, he vastly exceeded it.

Immense

"As a player he is immense and the influence he has on games should never be understated. At times he has carried this club on his back and in my time here he has always shown the ability that has rightly seen him be regarded as one of the world's best for well over a decade.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard concedes his decision to leave Anfield after two decades was extremely difficult.

The 34-year-old made his debut for Liverpool in November 1998 and has made almost 700 appearances for the club.

He has won 10 trophies with the Reds, and although he failed to pick up a Premier League winners medal, he did lead Liverpool to their fifth Champions League success in 2005.

Although there is some speculation Gerrard will move to North America to play in the MLS, the player insists he has still to decide where his future lies.

Gerrard said: "This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time.

"I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool - that is something I could never contemplate.

"My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over.”

Gerrard also thanks manager Brendan Rodgers and the Liverpool’s American owners for their understanding over his decision.

"I can't thank Brendan, the owners and everyone at the club enough for how they've handled this and I am leaving on great terms. Also, I would like to thank my teammates and all the staff for their help and continued support,” Gerrard said.

"My final message is for the people who make Liverpool Football Club the greatest in the world - the supporters.

Steven Gerrard: Leaving Anfield

Steven Gerrard: Leaving Anfield

Following reports that Steven Gerrard is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, Adam Bate reflects on his remarkable Anfield career.

We look back at five of his greatest ever moments for his beloved club. What was your personal favourite?

United piledriver (March 2001)

Gerrard has scored nine goals against Manchester United in his career, continuing to haunt them as recently as March when his two penalties helped Liverpool to a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. But the pick of his goals against United was surely the long-range effort that beat Fabien Barthez at Anfield in March 2001. The win completed the first double that Liverpool had achieved over their great rivals in 22 years with Gerrard's opener setting them on their way to a 2-0 victory. There was a memorable celebration too as the midfielder dived towards to the corner flag and it was to go on to be a successful year for the club as they won no fewer than five trophies in that calendar year.

Olympiakos beauty (December 2004)

With Liverpool seemingly set for a group-stage exit from the Champions League at the hands of Rivaldo's Olympiakos in December 2004, Neil Mellor's late goal put Liverpool within a solitary strike of progressing to the knockout stages. Enter Gerrard with a sweetly-struck shot from distance that sent the Kop into wild celebrations. It was a wonderful Anfield moment in itself but one that will go into folklore given the significance of what was to come as Liverpool went on to become champions of Europe for a fifth time later that season.

Istanbul heroics (May 2005)

The performance with which he will forever be associated, Gerrard's greatest moment in a Liverpool shirt is also arguably the most famous night in the club's history. With the Reds 3-0 down to the mighty AC Milan at half time, Gerrard helped orchestrate a comeback for the ages - reducing the deficit with a header before winning a penalty that led to Xabi Alonso levelling things up. Gerrard went on to lift the trophy - describing it as the "best feeling ever" - following a remarkable shootout to complete a miraculous night under the lights in Istanbul.

FA Cup hero (May 2006)

Twelve months on from one famous 3-3, there was another to enjoy as Gerrard added another chapter to his own legend with a sensational solo performance to drag Liverpool over the line in the FA Cup final against West Ham in Cardiff. The Hammers were 2-0 up when Gerrard set up Djibril Cisse before equalising himself only for Alan Pardew's side to take the lead once more. West Ham were seconds away from a sensational win when a tiring Gerrard fired home from long range to beat Shaka Hislop. Liverpool's hero later netted his penalty in the shootout as the Reds won the trophy in typically dramatic circumstances.

Derby day hat-trick (March 2012)

On the tenth anniversary of David Moyes' time in charge of Everton, it was Anfield's hero who stole the show. Gerrard went into the game having not scored in seven games for club and country, but Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish had him fired up for the Merseyside derby and the captain scored all the goals in a 3-0 home win. The first was a smart finish to lift the ball over goalkeeper Tim Howard, the second was thumped in to the delight of the Kop and a hat-trick goal was found in the dying moments to cap a virtuoso performance.
