Christian Benteke: Liverpool's newest recruit

Christian Benteke: Liverpool's newest recruit

James Milner has hailed new Liverpool team-mate Christian Benteke as the "complete striker", while Robbie Fowler and Dietmar Hamann have also praised his signing.

The Belgium international striker finalised his £32.5m from Aston Villa on Wednesday after completing a medical.

He becomes Brendan Rodgers' seventh summer signing and further bolsters the club's attacking options following the arrivals of Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings.

Milner, who signed for Liverpool earlier this summer after leaving Manchester City, told Sky Sports News HQ"I’d rather play with him to be honest. He’s a pretty complete striker.

"He’s got strength and pace, can score with his feet, his head and he’s a handful. He’s proved that he can score goals in the Premier League.

"It’s another great signing for us, we’ve already got a good squad here and adding players of his quality is a big boost for us again."

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler and Dietmar Hamann have also offered Benteke their backing.

"I'm absolutely delighted. I think he’s an excellent player, he will get us goals," Fowler said.

"He’s a proven Premier League player so I’m excited he’s joined. I think we probably needed a player to take a little bit of the burden off a few of the other players as well so hopefully he’ll be a massive success and score loads of goals for us.

"He has scored goals everywhere he’s been," He said.

"He’s a big, strong lad so he’s not going to get knocked off the ball too easily, and when you’ve got a player like that I think he can buy time for the midfield players and even the defenders to get up there and support him so it’s a real good time to be a Liverpool fan."

Dietmar Hamann, who spent seven seasons as a Liverpool player, agreed with Fowler that the Belgian international can have a great impact.

"He showed that he more or less single handedly kept Aston Villa in the league last season," he said.

"I’m very excited to see him, I think he could be the final piece in the jigsaw because the problem for Liverpool last season is they didn’t score enough goals.

"Hopefully with him, with the arrival of (Divock) Origi and also Danny Ings I think we’ve got the firepower now to challenge for the top four position, and not to forget Daniel Sturridge who will hopefully be back at some stage, so I think that’s been the problem last season, not scoring enough goals.

"There’s enough players now who are capable of doing it, they just need the service but again with the players behind Lallana, Coutinho, Firmino arriving at the club  - I expect a lot more from Markovic – I think they should create enough chances for these guys to score."

Damien Comolli: Critical of Liverpool's transfers

Damien Comolli: Critical of Liverpool's transfers

Liverpool's transfer activity this summer has been labelled a "massive, massive risk" by the club's former director of football, Damien Comolli.

Comolli, whose association with the club ran from November 2010 to April 2012, remains a much-criticised figure at Anfield due to his own profligate transfer record under the tutelage of Kenny Dalglish.

During his reign in charge of transfers at Liverpool, Comolli oversaw the signings of Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Doni, Jose Enrique, Sebastian Coates and Craig Bellamy among others, with the likes of Luis Suarez and current captain Jordan Henderson representing his few successes.

But Comolli has now voiced his concerns over the club's transfer activity in the current window, with James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bodgan, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez, Nathaniel Clyne and Christian Benteke joining for a cumulative £77.5million.

After signing eight players for over £100million last season, Comolli feels such upheaval within the squad could be extremely detrimental.

"Without talking about individual players, it is always a big risk to make so many changes during one transfer window," Comolli, who oversaw the transfers of 26 players over two seasons at the club, told talkSPORT.

"I thought it was a huge risk last year after selling [Luis] Suarez and bringing in, I think, nine. Now they have decided to change a lot again and totally rebuild. That is always a massive, massive risk.

"They have bought in players who have got talent, but they are going to compete against some very settled teams."

Comolli pointed to the transfer dealings of last season's Premier League top four, saying their "very subtle adjustments" stand them in good stead in the face of opposition from the likes of Liverpool.

"Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are making some very subtle adjustments to their squad and, on the other hand, Liverpool are changing everything every year. I'm not convinced it is the right approach.

"It is too much in two off-seasons. When you gamble as much money as they did last summer, you have got to give players a chance, and changing everything again sends the message to the players brought in last summer that they will not get a chance.

"By the time everyone settles into the team, and the players coming from abroad get used to the Premier League, they might be well behind fourth place.

"It is a huge risk. If you look at the stability of City, Chelsea, Arsenal throughout the years - the proof is in the pudding."

Christian Benteke: Latest Belgian to join Liverpool

Christian Benteke: Latest Belgian to join Liverpool

Christian Benteke can be the perfect link man for Liverpool and enable them to be a threat on the counter-attack, according to Simon Mignolet.

Benteke completed his £32.5million move to Liverpool on Wednesday, becoming the club's seventh - and possibly last - signing of a busy summer.

He is charged with adding goals to a side that struggled without Luis Suarez and injured Daniel Sturridge last season, but Mignolet believes his Belgium team-mate will do far more than simply add the finishing touch to moves.

"He's got the physical presence, the ability to hold the ball up front and play with his back to goal," Mignolet told Liverpool's official website.

"He will make sure that all the other players we've got connect with him, and when he keeps that ball make sure that we can be dangerous on the counter-attack.

"I'm very pleased that he's signed.

"We all know that he's a very good player and it's another Belgian joining LFC.

"We had some good duels against each other with Aston Villa. I won't be challenging him anymore, like I did last season, so that's nice."

With Divock Origi also added to the Liverpool squad after spending last season on loan

at Lille, Mignolet is delighted to be a part of the growing Belgian contingent at Anfield.

"I think I've been a good example," Mignolet added.

"I was the first one and now we're three. If we all play it means Liverpool is one-quarter Belgian.

"I'm very happy. The Belgian connection is there now and it will be nice for the people in Belgium to follow LFC.

"They've done that before but it will only make it better and I'm sure there'll be a lot of Belgian fans coming to Anfield next season."

Roberto Firmino: The next Aquilani?

Roberto Firmino: The next Aquilani?

Roberto Firmino could either match the achievements of Luis Suarez at Liverpool or become another Alberto Aquilani, according to Jamie Carragher.

Firmino was signed for an initial £21million from Bundesliga club Hoffenheim this summer, with the fee potentially rising to £29million through clauses.

The Brazilian could become the third most expensive Liverpool signing ever as a result, behind just Andy Carroll (£35m) and new team-mate Christian Benteke (£32.5m).

The 23-year-old was officially unveiled by the Reds on Wednesday after taking an extended leave following the Copa America, and is expected to share the goal burden this season after scoring 49 in 153 appearances from attacking midfield for Hoffenheim.

But club legend Carragher has fired a warning to Liverpool fans expecting him to be an instant success, saying he is just as likely to "be another Alberto Aquilani" as he is to emulate Suarez.

Italian midfielder Aquilani was signed for around £17million from Roma to replace Xabi Alonso in 2009 but, despite the fanfare, struggled during his Merseyside spell and managed just one disappointing season.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Carragher has warned that the same fate could befall Firmino: "Though 95 per cent of Liverpool supporters have never seen Firmino in action - YouTube doesn't count - they believe he is already on his way to becoming an icon.

"He comes from Brazil, his style is similar to Luis Suarez's and his form for Hoffenheim was brilliant, leaving fans saying: 'Imagine what he'll be like for us!'

"That is the mystique of buying players from abroad. Firmino could well be another Suarez; he could also be another Alberto Aquilani."
