Pengurus Villa, Paul Lambert menyifatkan ia adalh berita gembira menjelang boxing day.

With Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation currently bordering on farcical, Simon Jones takes a look back at The Reds’ best No.1’s during the Premier League era.

Goalkeepers can be like managers: the less you have over the years, the more successful (generally) your team’s likely to be. Since the start of the Premier League, we’ve had our fair share. Some have been great, like Pepe Reina, and some not so great, like Charles Itandje.

With Simon Mignolet’s fall from grace between the sticks this term, we could do with a new No.1 to help stop our dodgy defensive displays – or at least put some pressure on the Belgian. It’s easier said than done though, top ‘keepers don’t come cheap, and most are already at top clubs. Yet having a Joe Hart or a Thibuat Courtois as a last line of defence would make the world seem a safer place.

Mignolet is a good goalkeeper, clearly better than Brad Jones. However, his uncertainness between the sticks has spread throughout the team, and has caused us huge problems. A January purchase of a new goalkeeper must be paramount for Brendan Rodgers.

In hindsight, perhaps letting Reina go wasn’t the best of moves – and what would most of us give for the Spaniard to be back in goal. Unfortunately, he has long gone now – leaving great memories for all reds fans to savour. But has Reina been our best Premier League ‘keeper? Let’s take a look…

David James – 277 appearances (1992-1999)

London, England - Monday, December 2, 1996: Liverpool's goalkeeper David James in action during the 2-0 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

On the surface, everything about David James screamed top-class goalkeeper: great shot-stopper, huge frame, and athletic. During his time at Anfield he had all these attributes in abundance, yet the mental side of his game let him down.

To say he was sometimes unable to catch a football was an understatement, and the amount of games he threw away was painful – in particular THAT game against Manchester United at Anfield in 1997. James was our No.1 for most of the nineties, and didn’t miss a league match for the reds from August 1994 to May 1997. He could have been one of our finest ‘keepers if it wasn’t for those reported late nights staying up playing computer games!

Sander Westerveld – 103 app (1999-2001)

ROME, ITALY - Thursday, February 15, 2001: Liverpool's Sander Westerveld and Stephane Henchoz against AS Roma during the UEFA Cup 4th Round 1st Leg match at the Stadio Olimpico. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Part of Gerard Houllier’s overhaul at Anfield, the Dutchman fast became our new No.1. During his first campaign in 1999-2000, he conceded the fewest goals in the Premiership, helping the reds return to Europe competition. The following season, he played his part in our treble-winning extravaganza – completing 38 full league appearances.

He had the odd dodgy moment but his consistency would soon to be over after a disastrous blunder at Bolton at the start of the 2001-02 campaign, which led to him being quickly shipped out. Only a brief spell on Merseyside, yet he collected a League cup, F.A. cup, and U.E.F.A. cup winner’s medal – fair play to him!

Jerzy Dudek – 185 app (2001-2007)

Signed at the same time as Chris Kirkland, the Polish international came to Anfield with a decent reputation from the Dutch league with Feyenoord. He quickly became a firm favourite with the kop, helping us finish runners up 2001/02. As with all ‘keepers; he had some shockers – most notably against United at Anfield, but Dudek never seemed to be affected by criticism. He always seemed able enough to pick himself up, and in May 2005 he became a cult legend. Not the greatest goalkeeper we’ve ever had, but one of the most popular!

Pepe Reina – 394 app (2005-2013)

CARDIFF, WALES - SATURDAY, MAY 13th, 2006: Liverpool's goakeeper Jose Reina celebrates saving the last penalty shot from West Ham United's Anton Ferdinand to win the FA Cup during the FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium. (Pic by Jason Roberts/Propaganda)

Quite simply the best goalkeeper we’ve had since Bruce Grobbelaar. The Spanish stopper came to Anfield on the back of some good seasons in La Liga with Barcelona and Villarreal. In 2005/06, he won the F.A. cup and kept clean sheets left, right, and centre – breaking records as the season went on. Despite a dodgy start to the 2006/07 campaign, he became a hero once more as his knack for saving penalties got us to Athens for another Champions League final.

His efforts between the sticks should have brought more trophies – not to mention more caps for Spain – and in his eight years stay with the club he missed only twenty league games. His distribution was superb, and he held the title of ‘sweeper-keeper’ with aplomb.

When Rafa Benitez left, Reina seemed to lose his way slightly, but still managed to be considered one of the best ‘keepers around. A huge character on and off the pitch – think it will be a while until we see another Pepe in goal!

Tertarik dengan komen seorang liker yg saya rasa sesuai dengan apa yg pernah saya huraikan dahulu.. Harap beliau tak kisah ,komen beliau digunakan sebagai ABM disini.

One Wonder Season Scouting.

Namun wujud satu lagi scouting yg saya gelarkan &039;1 wonder season scouting&039;. Scouting menyediakan laporan atas dasar short term. Pemain yg 1 season on form lalu dijadikan sasaran dengan harga Fernando Torres (20juta+). Mujurlah Andriy Voronin percuma. Robbie Keane, Fernando Morientes, Mark Gonzalez Jan Krompkamp, Ryan Babel antara contoh pemain yg ditandatangani kerana faktor 1 wonder season.

Era KD,Carroll sebagai contoh. Dia adalah good player tapi valuasi harga dikira overpriced!

walaupun panic buy!

Downing ternyata pemain yg baik namun bila di Liverpool dia drop kerana dia tak sesuai dengan kehendak taktikal dan gameplay style.

Ini namanya scouting based on technical dan publisiti 1 musim dan tidak mengambil Kira aspek lebih detail.

Charlie Adam juga contoh pemain 1 wonder season yg disign Liverpool hingga sanggup melepaskan Tom Ince sebagai galang ganti.

Akhirnya kelaut .. still a good player tapi tak cukup bagus untuk Liverpool. Pemain lain, Konchesky, Poulsen juga dalam senarai. Yg menariknya mereka di kelab pasca Liverpool, OK plak.

Adam Lallana juga antara contoh lain. Price tag yg tinggi. Namun masih gagal mencapai potensi sebenar.

Dejan Lovren ,dah terang terang hantar transfer request, kenapa masih bid 20juta utk pemain yg dah request transfer out?? Amateur TC?? Saya tak sentuh Lambert sebab dia memang mangsa out of form striker.

Inilah sebab kenapa kita selalu bid mahal sangat utk non establish players! Sebab 1 wonder season scouting. Terbaru Saido Berahino. Saya peminat Berahino tapi Liverpool harus pastikan bid yg bukan macam nak beli player yg dah 2 , 3 tahun reputasi tip top. January price akan 20-30% lebih mahal.tapi please make a good business dan bukan amateur.

Boxing Day!

Brendan Rodgers’ improving Liverpool travel to Burnley on Boxing Day for their penultimate fixture of the calendar year, looking to record victory for the first time in four league games. Ben Twelves discusses the team selection options available to the Liverpool manager.

Liverpool make the trip to Premier League newcomers Burnley for this year’s festive Boxing Day fixture at Turf Moor, with the Reds looking to start matching improved performances with an upturn in results.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have started to rediscover the attacking play that made the Reds so exciting to watch last season – despite defensive issues still proving to be Liverpool’s achilles heel – but the superior performances in the last two Premier League fixtures haven’t yet seen the Anfield side pick-up maximum points.

Friday’s match against Sean Dyche’s battling Burnley team would be a perfect starting point for the Reds to turn that feat around, with a run of five more favourable fixtures to follow over the rest of the busy festive period and into the new years that sees Liverpool take on Swansea, Leicester, Sunderland, Aston Villa and West Ham before the second Merseyside derby of the season at Goodison Park.

The hectic schedule should see Rodgers utilise the depth of his squad in order to keep his players as fresh as possible throughout the festive schedule, but with the match against Dyche’s men coming following five days’ rest, the Liverpool manager has good reason to stick with a strong side for the first visit to Turf Moor since a resounding 4-0 victory in April 2010.

The Team

Injury will keep Glen Johnson and Joe Allen out for the Boxing Day clash along with the remaining long term absentees. Fabio Borini is suspended after his red card against Arsenal last Sunday but fellow countryman Mario Balotelli is set to return to the squad after completing his one match suspension.

Brad Jones is in line to continue in goal despite proving he is no better option than the benched Simon Mignolet over the last three matches, and in front of the Australian, Rodgers is set to stick with the 3-4-3 system that his seen his side’s performance level vastly improve in the last three matches.

Ahead of Jones, the back three of Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho should remain the same with there being no need to recall Lovren who has question marks over his availability for the match following his groin injury that kept him out last weekend.

However, Rodgers could make changes to his midfield that has begun the last two consecutive matches, with Steven Gerrard in need of a rest again after playing back-to-back 90 minutes for four matches in a row, and Jordan Henderson far less influential stationed on the right hand side of midfield.

Emre Can will be hoping for more minutes in central midfield alongside Lucas Leiva, who should keep his place following a strong performance against Arsenal, though Henderson could alternatively move central to allow for Lazar Markovic to switch to the right and introducing Alberto Moreno on the left.

In attack, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho should once again line up alongside Raheem Sterling in the central striker position, though Rickie Lambert – who came on as a second half substitute against Arsene Wenger’s side – will be hopeful of a return to the starting XI with Balotelli likely to return to the bench.

The Line Up

Having spoken in his pre-match press conference of “managing players” to ensure “fresh performances” Rodgers should make two changes to his side for the match, the first of which should see Mignolet brought back into the side, with Jones having proven that he is not a better option between the sticks than the Belgian.

The second tweak should see Steven Gerrard make way after a busy two weeks wither Emre Can and Alberto Moreno both options to replace the Captain, but it should be the Spaniard who enters the starting XI to allow for Henderson to return to his more influential central role.

Keeping with the new look system, Liverpool should line up like this on Friday afternoon:

Burnley my selection

However, I expect Rodgers to make only one change to the team that were rewarded for a fine performance against Arsenal with an undeserved draw, with Moreno coming into the team for Lazar Markovic, and this is how I expect the Liverpool boss to name his side come kick-off on Friday:

Burnley Rodgers selection guess

Recent performances in the last three matches from Liverpool have been much improved but just rewards for the better displays have evaded Rodgers and his side since the upturn.

Boxing Day is the perfect opportunity to address that frustrating feat and start a winnable run of league fixtures off with maximum points ahead of a crucial part of the season for Liverpool.
