Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits he is wary of the threat posed by Liverpool and Luis Suarez ahead of their Boxing Day showdown.
City are just one point behind league leaders Liverpool following a 4-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage last Saturday.
Liverpool have been led by the sparkling form of Suarez, who has already netted 19 goals in 12 appearances this season, while City's leading striker Sergio Aguero sustained a calf injury which could see him out for eight weeks.
Pellegrini, whose side beat Arsenal 6-3 in their most recent home match, expects a fierce examination of his troops against the resurgent Reds, who won 5-0 at Tottenham in their most recent away game.
"Very difficult," Pellegrini said. "Liverpool is a very good team and Suarez is in a very good moment.
"But I think this Premier League, we are just finishing the first half, in two more games.
"And this Premier League will not just be Liverpool and Manchester City. Five or six teams will fight until the end."
Aguero is not the only frontline City player who will be absent on Boxing Day - hamstring injuries for right-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Micah Richards mean Gael Clichy could again be asked to play on his 'wrong' flank - but Pellegrini is confident he has the strength in depth to manage.
Strong
"We have a really strong squad with real quality players, who can cope with all the matches, without our injured players and players that can't play," he added.
City have conceded five goals in their last two games, leading some to question their resilience in a title battle which will likely go to the wire.
But Pellegrini is adamant the 2012 champions' approach will not change, even though opponents may adopt an ultra-cautious approach in an effort to stifle his side.
"I think they have changed already but I think we try to solve the different problems put to our team," Pellegrini said.
"The way in football is to score goals, that is why people pay for their tickets. Fans are always trying to celebrate the goals of their teams. That is very important, I think it is the best way to win.
"As much as you can. Maybe sometimes winning 1-0 is a very good goal, and that goal is three points more.
"But if you are playing well, why would you change if you are winning by two goals? If you are winning by two, why don't you continue the same way?"

Brendan Rodgers has challenged his injury-hit Liverpool squad to stand up to the challenge of two tough away games over the festive period.
Liverpool sit top of the table at Christmas, but face Manchester City on Boxing Day before travelling to Stamford Bridge at the weekend in what is sure to be a big test of their title credentials.
Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge are still unavailable for Rodgers, who is also waiting on the fitness of Jon Flanagan ahead of Thursday's trip to the Etihad after he limped out of the win over Cardiff with a hamstring injury.
"The squad is very thin at the moment," said Rodgers. "We only have 17 players available, which is unfortunate in a very busy period, and we have to assess Jon Flanagan. We're quite thin on the ground at the moment.
"But these games are opportunities for us. We're not going to cry about it. We have what we have. It's an opportunity for me to bring some youth team players into the squad. That's why you have an academy.
"Young players have to feel that when the opportunities come they are going to get the chance and we've done that quite a lot in the last 18 months."
Meanwhile, Rodgers agrees with Gerrard's assertion that Luis Suarez is currently the best player in the world.
"This is the most competitive league in world football and when you have a player performing at the level that he is, I don't think many would argue with that," he added.
"He's been phenomenal in his performance and I don't think there is anyone else in the world performing consistently at this level.
"But all the senior players have stood up and been counted. They've been professional and honest and when we've made mistakes, I know the players are making honest mistakes and one thing we've always done is bounce back."

Jack Lusby looks ahead to the January transfer window and the areas of Liverpool’s team that need to be reinforced if they are to replicate their superb opening half of the campgin in the second.
With Liverpool heading into Christmas on top of the Premier League table, the club can look ahead with confidence towards the January transfer window and the talents it may bring.
The basis of Brendan Rodgers’ charges’ ascent throughout the season has been their diligent well-drilled performances. At the heart of this success is a phenomenal team spirit.
The likes of Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and Jon Flanagan are enjoying resurgences under Rodgers’ stewardship, and this is due to the Northern Irishman’s exceptional man-management talents.
A word in the ear of the departing Flanagan during the 3-1 win over Cardiff shows this is a manager who understands the importance of looking after his players.
However, when it comes to the opening of the January transfer window Liverpool will undoubtedly look to strengthen on this exceptional start.
But why change what is currently blossoming?
Whilst high spirits continue to denounce the torrid Hodgson-years, a measure of realism is required.
During Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Swansea earlier in the season, the loss of Coutinho to a clumsy Ashley Williams challenge markedly affected the team as their performance diminished significantly.
Furthermore, the Brazilian’s absence was felt heavily during the defeat to Southampton in September, in a game where Rodgers felt it necessary to experiment with a startling four centre-backs in a sluggish back line.
Defensive frailties were also exposed as Rodgers fielded Aly Cissokho and Jon Flanagan as wing-backs in the 2-0 loss against Arsenal, their respective abilities stretched threadbare.
This suggests that positions can be strengthened, and that a thin squad requires fleshing out.
Which areas need strengthening?
Left-Back
Liverpool’s current first and second choices for the left back position seem to be Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan.
Whilst Flanagan is demonstrating great promise whilst deputising recently, and when fit Enrique proves an effective mix of the brutish defensive qualities and nimble attacking prowess that Rodgers requires of a full-back, left-back is a position often speculated upon.
The search for a roving left-sided defender both adept in defence and attack, with veritable lungs of steel as well as a comfort in possession, may prove tough.
Paper-talk suggests that Ryan Bertrand is a feasible option, whilst Real Madrid’s unfavoured Fabio Coentrão may also be a realistic target following the falling-through of his proposed loan to Manchester United during the summer.
However, despite his detractors’ appeals, Jose Enrique stills provides the required mix of attack and defence and, if Rodgers fails to find the right target, settling for the Spaniard may not be the worst option.
IDEAL TARGET: A long shot would be Southampton’s Luke Shaw; however Bertrand may prove a more realistic second-choice.
Central Midfield
Another area that Liverpool may look to strengthen in January is that of central midfield.
With Steven Gerrard ageing, Lucas Leiva’s position currently unchallenged, and up-and-coming Spaniard Luis Alberto more useful further forward, Rodgers may look to counter these factors.
A Rodgers central midfielder requires superlative possessive qualities and an expansive passing range. What he may be missing is a world-class Vieira-type adept at breaking up play.
Following his sighting at Anfield during last month’s Merseyside derby, speculation upon the prospect of Liverpool signing Ruben Kazan’s tenacious Yann M’Vila has grown rife. The brutish Frenchman is a middle-ground between the energetic Jordan Henderson and the tough-tackling Lucas.
Naturally, the perennial presence of Liverpool’s beloved Xabi Alonso in gossip columns recently has heightened hopes for the month ahead, whilst Javier Mascherano is another ex-Red to remain in the hearts of the Anfield faithful.
However, adding to the already effective midfield of Lucas, Allen, Henderson and Gerrard may prove to unsettle their chemistry. Whoever Rodgers may opt for would need to be the absolute right fit.
IDEAL TARGET: Whilst the heart says Xabi Alonso, the head says the younger and more realistic Yann M’Vila.
Forward
Be it good or bad, Liverpool have been relying on the majestic Luis Suarez and his partner Daniel Sturridge to provide the majority of the goals this season.
With the perceived inadequacies of Fabio Borini, Iago Aspas and Victor Moses proving apparent, a January recruit to add to the forward line may be advised.
Ukraine wingers Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka have both been rumoured to be in Rodgers’ sights, whilst Burnley’s Danny Ings is consistently mooted to join Suarez and Sturridge in the attack.
However, as testified by former-teammate Mohamed Zika, Basel’s Mohamed Salah seems the most likely to join the club in January, with Zika claiming he is “99%” likely to join the Reds.
Any reinforcement to the front line will need to provide competition and quality support to Rodgers’ current crop.
However, any signing may stunt the progress of Luis Alberto and the returning Suso: it may be that Rodgers will look to the future instead.
IDEAL TARGET: Whilst Salah seems the most likely, Konoplyanka looks the most exciting prospect. Either or both of the two would be welcome additions.
January Onwards
With some considered additions to his current charges, Brendan Rodgers would look forward with a squad with more depth, and a platform to challenge for title honours.
As Rodgers testified: “Of course, we would want to reinforce the group, but it has to be players that are clearly better than what we have that can come in and help the group”, reinforcements will only be made if they are better than his current crop of players.
Furthermore, with FSG acting on financial prudence – with this proving a success so far – and the restrictions of FFP looming, any major incomings will be stringently measured.
Liverpool’s outlook on the January transfer window may go one of two ways: capitalising on their position in the league to develop the squad, or hampering a progressing and flourishing young squad.
Either way it looks to be an intriguing month.
Which positions do you feel need to be strengthened? And do you think it is a good idea to change a so-far winning formula?

Kopites everywhere were given an early Christmas present last Friday when Luis Suárez signed a new contract, which will keep him at Anfield until 2018. Neil Collins assesses the importance of securing the Uruguayan.
The New Contract
Unlike the prolonged transfer wrangling over the summer, the new contract was sorted incredibly quickly. It was announced that Ian Ayre was in Barcelona last week to discuss terms with Suárez’s agent, Pere Guardiola; but few would’ve predicted the deal being done and dusted so soon.
The new deal is great business for all parties even if it isn’t a guarantee that he won’t leave. Yet, it does mean that prospective buyers will now have to fork out top-dollar for his services, and it provides greater clarity in terms of clauses. This means that derisory offers like Arsenal’s bid in the summer will get kicked into the stingies. You’ll need at least £80m plus a quid now, Arsène.
Liverpool will undoubtedly have written a huge release clause into the contract, whilst also including some get-out should we not get Champions League. The original contract was due to expire in two years, but with Suárez in the shop window at the World Cup next summer; we’ve got plenty of protection should the worst happen.
He’ll now become Liverpool’s highest paid player ever; receiving a nice pay rise of around £70k per week until the end of the season, which will rise to £200k if he stays after.
Undoubtedly, the fact we’re top made the bargaining a lot easier. After all when Suárez wanted out, Liverpool finished in seventh place with 61 points; 12 off fourth-place and 28 off the champions. Now we’re a point ahead of Arsenal going into crunch games at Man City and Chelsea.
From Judas to Midas
Like many Liverpool fans I was furious with Suárez over the summer especially after we had supported him so strongly throughout two lengthy bans and numerous controversial incidents.
But then he repaid us by publicly courting a move to Arsenal; claiming that Liverpool had reneged on release clause. Rodgers said he had disrespected the club who deserved loyalty, and banished him to Melwood to train alone.
One the pre-season tour, Suárez seem alienated from his teammates and barely acknowledged the crowd at an open training session at Anfield. But Rodgers and FSG dug their heels in and wouldn’t sanction a cut-price deal. This ultimately led to John W. Henry asking what Arsenal were “smoking” with their laughable bid.
There seemed no way back, but then there was a massive u-turn. Suárez was suddenly staying for his love of Liverpool and the fans. Torres said similar things before it all turned sour. Yet, he simply downed tools and sulked for his last 18 months on Merseyside. Conversely, Suárez has managed to surpass his previous best; with his goals and work-rate being phenomenal.
Only few months ago the media were delighting in burying him, but now they’re running out of superlatives to describe his heroics. It’s easy for us to forgive him too when he’s so superb. If it had been Shelvey feasting on Ivanovi?’s forearm like something out of The Hills Have Eyes; Rodgers would’ve booted him out the same day.
Even neutral fans are now just sitting back in awe and enjoying watching him. Well, except for the Mancs. And Norwich fans.
Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Who would’ve thought Suárez would now be captain when many had said he was a disgrace to the No.7 shirt? His character has blossomed since being given the armband too; especially with helping the youngsters.
Suárez orchestrated the pile-on for the celebrations after Flanagan’s stunner at Tottenham and looked more delighted with the 20-year-old grabbing a goal than with either of his own.
Likewise, in consecutive games he’s laid two goals on a plate for Sterling. Also, his understanding with Henderson has been superb and he singled out the midfielder for attention whilst celebrating both his goals on Saturday.
Furthermore, he’s playing with a smile on his face and why wouldn’t he be? His outstanding displays have forced people to shut up and referees don’t seem to be ignoring fouls on him quite as much now.
In return, we haven’t seen him sarcastically clapping refs this season. Previously, a decision would go against him and he would often thrash a simple effort into the stands moments later with his mind still pre-occupied. On Saturday he had a great chance to complete his hat-trick, but hit the post. In the past he would’ve screamed with frustration, but this time he immediately hared after the ball instead.
Although he’s been injured very little for Liverpool, he’s been suspended for 20 games in total. In contrast, he’s only picked up one caution this season. The Suárez of old would’ve punted that Spurs mascot into the crowd for thumbing her nose at him too. Instead, he humiliated her favourite team.
Plus, he’s now demonstrating improved professionalism. Previously, he hid behind his poor English skills whilst Dalglish and Rodgers fielded awkward questions. Yet, in recent weeks he’s conducted interviews and his speech at the FSF Player of the Year awards was full of modesty.
Whoever it was who laid down the law to him over the summer deserves huge credit. Off the pitch, I’ve read that he’s a quiet, family man (and if Being: Liverpool is to be believed; all he seems to do is play Monopoly with Lucas). I felt cynical about him bringing his kids out against Palace at the time, but perhaps the support of his wife and family has helped him focus on just the good points in his game.
Perhaps he’s also realised that he’s truly loved at Liverpool and that he wouldn’t find that level of unprecedented support at many other clubs around the world.
Just Can’t Get Enough
Suárez is not only the best player in the league by a country mile, but he’s now arguably in the top three in the world.
The 26-year-old is banging them in from all over the place – 40-yarders, long-range-bullet headers, lobs, one-one-ones, thunderbolts, free-kicks, curlers and tap-ins.
His brace that fired Liverpool to the top of the table against Cardiff brought his tally to 19 goals in 12 league games. That’s more than 11 teams in the Premier League, and averages at a goal every 57 minutes. Plus, he’s chipped in with nine assists too.
‘El Pistolero’ is even gunning down the two best players in the world, and in fewer games. Ronaldo has 18 goals in 16 league games, whilst Messi has eight goals in 11 appearances. No wonder we just can’t get enough of him!

With Aly Cissokho becoming somewhat of a forgotten man at Anfield, Ben Twelves discusses the on-loan defender’s future on Merseyside.
Since arriving at Anfield on a season-long loan from Valencia, it’s fair to say that Aly Cissokho’s spell on Merseyside so far hasn’t gone according to plan. Question marks over Jose Enrique’s capabilities as a first choice left back saw Brendan Rodgers increase competition by bringing the Frenchman in, but so far Cissokho has failed to establish himself.
Hard Luck
It could be argued of course that Cissokho has been unlucky. Injury on his first start in Liverpool red in the Capital One Cup at home to Notts County, saw him stretchered off after just ten minutes of the game. The injury resulted in the new recruit missing six games in all competitions and losing out on any chance to show Rodgers why he should be starting over his Spanish counterpart.
In that time, Jose began to perform closer to level which persuaded Kenny Dalglish to bring him to the club. But a persistent knee problem for the Spaniard which would require surgery, meant him being ruled out for a number of months and once again, the opportunity for Cissokho to stake his claim for a starting berth reopened.
Opportunities At Last
The 2-2 draw at St James’ Park in October saw Cissokho deployed in a left wing-back role, where in truth, he looked very uncomfortable which showed with an unimpressive performance. But Aly kept his place in the side for the 4-1 win over West Brom and started in our 2-0 away defeat at the Emirates, where he turned in a very poor first half performance, was hauled off at half time and left sections of the clubs’ support praying for a swift recovery for Enrique.
Seemingly little other option at that time saw Rodgers keep the faith with the 26 year old who again started in the 4-0 demolition of Fulham, a game which I watched at Anfield. A change back to a four man defence presented the chance for Cissokho to play in his favoured position – as a left back.
The overriding feeling on the loanee from that day was his lack of attacking nous and productivity – key ingredients for full-backs to possess for Rodgers. With the amount of quality play that came through Glen Johnson down the right, we could have actually played without Cissokho on the left.
Another below average performance left the thought of the Frenchman playing in a high-tempo derby game next time out a frightening one.
Flanagan’s Introduction
Cissokho’s uninspiring form provided food for thought for the manager, who ultimately decided to drop him for the derby at Goodison Park for the relatively inexperienced and natural right back, Jon Flanagan. The on-loan left back had his chances in the team, but failed to impress in any of them.
Even before Flanagan’s man of the match display, the writing was on the wall for Cissokho. His confidence was sure to be affected after being dropped and psychologically for the new signing, it must have had an impact. The fact Flanagan has gone on to keep his place in the side while the on-loan left back has featured at times for the clubs’ Under 21 side speaks volumes about how his Liverpool career has unfolded.
Where next?
There are some positives to Cissokho’s loan though. We brought in cover and even a possible contender for a starting place with it all up to Aly himself to show what he can offer with no real burden of trying to shift him on if it doesn’t work out.
Also the move was a cheap one. If the reports are true, it was only a £1 million loan fee with the chance to make the move a permanent for as little as £3million if in the best interests of all parties. In truth, a permanent move isn’t something in the best interests of Liverpool Football Club.
In fact, never mind making the move a permanent one, is there actually any point in keeping Cissokho beyond January?
With Flanagan clearly first choice after his excellent displays and Martin Kelly the back-up full-back option on the bench, as well as the ability to switch Glen Johnson to the opposite side, it really is a struggle to see where the French defender will actually get game time.
Perhaps his best chance to play could come when the FA Cup commences, but even then, the recently promoted Brad Smith, who Rodgers has stated could feature in the second half of the season, may be a preferred and alternative option. The only reason it would make sense to keep Cissokho at this moment, would be in case of a dreaded injury crisis.
Therefore, the next step for Aly Cissokho is to return to parent club Valencia and unless something drastically changes, it makes perfect sense for that to happen in January.
