Brendan Rodgers says his team selection will not be influenced by Steven Gerrard’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

Gerrard, 34, will leave for America in the summer when his contract expires, and he is likely to be on the bench for Monday's FA Cup third round tie against AFC Wimbledon.

But while Gerrard will want to make the most of the time he has left it will not sway Rodgers, who has used his captain sparingly this season in an attempt to get the best out of him.

"I will always pick what I think is the best team for the games," he said. "Every player is the same, wanting to play every game, but it hasn't changed.

"He understands where it's at and because the number of games we have been playing there might be times he has to come out of the team."

Following the loss of Jamie Carragher to retirement 18 months ago Gerrard's exit will rob Liverpool of their home-grown heartbeat.

However, Rodgers is hopeful many of the club's youngsters at the academy will be inspired by what the first-team captain has achieved and view his departure as an opportunity.

"There are not many managers who get to manage that situation," added Rodgers.

"Jamie was an incredible player here, Stevie at the end of the season will move on and for us it is about finding the next one.

"It is a difficult task. You have one of the leading players in world football over the last 15 years but it happens to all the great players.

"There is a lot of great work going on in our academies with the focus on players on our own doorstep.

"Now it is easy to look outside and abroad but for us it is very much trying to find the talents in and around Liverpool and Merseyside - of which we believe there are many.

"There is only one Steven Gerrard but we have to look for the next talents to come through. This is a club which is renowned for having world-class players and there is no greater club at which to be an icon.

"It gives an opportunity for the younger players to keep pushing on. If you can perform consistently at a top level here than there is no greater place to be held in that esteem from supporters."

As well as being a time of anticipation for what the future might hold, New Years is a time for reflecting on the year that has just past. In that spirit, I look back on Liverpool’s 2014 and profile three heroes and villains from what has been a rollercoaster year for Kopites.

Heroes

1. Brendan Rodgers

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 11, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers after the final game of the season, a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United, during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Any manager that takes Liverpool within touching distance of their first Premier League title deserves to be acknowledged as a hero. The 41-year old Northern Irish man was instrumental in the Reds’ remarkable 2013/2014 campaign, which concluded with the Merseysiders still having a mathematical chance of clinching the title on the final day of the season, even if everyone knew it was a long shot in reality.

His tactical versatility and attacking emphasis meant that Liverpool produced exquisite football for Kopites to enjoy every week, while also securing results, as the Reds experienced an unforgettable first half of 2014, winning 15 out of 19 League games and losing only once.

Undoubtedly, Rodgers has areas requiring development. Most notably, he needs to work out how to improve his leaky defence. However, the astounding success that the club enjoyed under his guidance and inspired by his footballing philosophy entitles him to time to turn things around, and earns him a place among Liverpool’s heroes of 2014.

2. Luis Suarez

He could so easily be placed in the villain category as a result of his acrimonious departure from Anfield following bite gate 3.0. However, Suarez’s scoring record makes it impossible not to ultimately view him as one of the Reds’ heroes from2014.

12 of his 31 League goals in the 2013/2014 season came in 2014, and there is no doubt that Liverpool would not have been challenging for the title in May had Suarez not been scoring like it was going out of fashion.

The Reds’ declining fortunes following his sale to Catalonian giants Barcelona for £70 million in the summer perfectly shows how much Suarez contributed to the club, and for that he will always be remembered fondly on Merseyside, even if the rest of the country continues to hate the ‘marmite’ figure.

3. Daniel Sturridge

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 13, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge in action against Manchester City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Suarez’s sidekick, Sturridge matured into the exceptional striker he has always promised to be this year. Netting 14 times in 2014, the England forward revelled when given the opportunity to play centrally and formed a duo with Suarez so dynamic that it came to be affectionately known as the ‘SAS’.

Alongside Suarez’s departure, Sturridge’s injury problems are a major determinant of Liverpool’s woes during the current campaign, and many are pinning their hopes on him being the hero who comes to the rescue to fire in the goals that propel the Reds up the table in 2015.

Villains

1. Liverpool’s defence

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 19, 2014: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel clears the ball off the line against Queens Park Rangers during the Premier League match at Loftus Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Put simply, Liverpool’s defence cost them the title in 2014. Shipping a grand total of 50 goals in the 2013/2014 season, which was 13 more than main title rivals Manchester City conceded, the Reds’ back line relied on being bailed out by the brilliance of their teammates at the other end of the pitch.

Stoke City 3-5 Liverpool, Liverpool 4-3 Swansea, Cardiff City 3-6 Liverpool and Norwich City 2-3 Liverpool spring to mind as particularly embarrassing games for Liverpool’s defence. However, no shoddy defensive display was as costly as the one at Selhurst Park on the penultimate matchday of the 2013/2014 season, when the visitors somehow conceded three goals in nine minutes during the closing stages to throw away a three goal lead and all but end their title chances.

Things haven’t got any better in 2014 either. In fact, considering the substantial sums that were invested in defenders like Lovren, Moreno and Manquillo over the summer, in real terms Liverpool’s defence has deteriorated even further. Only a remarkable and much needed turnaround will prevent Liverpool’s defence retaining its place in the list of villains at the end of 2015.

2. Simon Mignolet

LONDON, ENGLAND - Monday, May 5, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet along with Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel look dejected as Crystal Palace score the third goal during the Premiership match at Selhurst Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

One excuse that Liverpool’s defence might offer is that it is difficult to defend well when they have such an unconvincing goalkeeper behind them. They’d have a point too, since Simon Mignolet has been simply dreadful this year. Indecisive and hesitant at set pieces, the Belgian stopper looks like a mistake waiting to happen with the ball at his feet and has failed to redeem himself with his shot-stopping ability.

Surprisingly dropped against Manchester United, he sat out matches against Bournemouth and Arsenal before receiving an unexpected recall at Burnley on Boxing Day after his replacement Brad Jones picked up a thigh injury. His time out of the limelight on the sidelines did not seem to have the desired effect, though, as he produced another worryingly poor performance.

There seems little way back for Mignolet now, and it won’t come as a surprise if he leaves Liverpool in the January transfer window.

3. Mario Balotelli

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks dejected as his side draw 0-0 with Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

What can I say about Balotelli that hasn’t already been said?

The Italian has always been a liability and Rodgers himself admitted that he took a huge gamble when, in an act of desperation, he signed Super Mario from AC Milan for £16 million in the summer.

That speculative punt has spectacularly backfired, as the number 45 has managed a measly two goals in 15 games. Moreover, he has got in trouble off the pitch once again as well after the FA handed him a one match ban for posting a racist and anti-Semitic photo on Instagram. Perhaps most frustratingly, his attitude on the pitch has been atrocious, with his body language rarely suggesting anything other than complete and utter disinterest.

Rodgers has recently warned Balotelli to expect a spell on the bench, and it might be a long time before he can win back the many supporters who justifiably see him as one of Liverpool’s villains of 2014.

Brendan Rodgers wants to sign proven quality established internationals at Liverpool in order to help replace the departing Steven Gerrard, write several national media this Sunday.

SWANSEA, WALES - Friday, October 7, 2011: Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri in action against Wales during the UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifying Group G match at the Liberty Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The first of those could be long-term target Xherdan Shaqiri (pictured above). The 23-year-old Swiss attacker was heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the summer before Adam Lallana’s deal was completed.

Now, several reports claim Liverpool and Inter Milan are bidding for his signature from Bayern Munich.

Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio claims Liverpool are pushing hard for a €14 million deal this January. It’s claimed Inter are also interested, initially possibly on a loan deal, and that the decision is now largely up to the player.

Shaqiri would certainly add to Liverpool’s attacking options, and a front three of Shaqiri, Sterling and Sturridge is an exciting prospect.

Eurosport claim Sky Italia are reporting the same bid for Shaqiri, but also Juventus’ interest – claiming Juve have agreed personal terms with Shaqiri’s entourage, but not with Bayern as they want him on loan with option to buy.

Another attacking addition this January may yet to be Divock Origi, the player signed in the summer but loaned back to Lille.

The Belgian forward has been linked with an early arrival at Anfield numerous times in recent weeks and the latest report comes from French newspaper L’Equipe – who say Liverpool would have to pay an extra €4 million to make the move earlier than previously agreed.

Meanwhile, Rodgers is quoted in several British backpages explaining his desire to sign some “ready-made players” rather than purely young potential:

“A large part of our squad will always be young players, but if you want to take those steps forward at times you have to look to bring in some ready-made players.”

Rumour Mill: Liverpool in €14m bid for Shaqiri, as Rodgers targets proven players

Unknown   at  18:43  No comments

Brendan Rodgers wants to sign proven quality established internationals at Liverpool in order to help replace the departing Steven Gerrard, write several national media this Sunday.

It seems like Brendan Rodgers couldn’t please everyone with his approach to Steven Gerrard’s future, and here Jack Lusby defends the manager.

MADRID, SPAIN - Tuesday, November 4, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the UEFA Champions League Group B match against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After the announcement of Steven Gerrard’s upcoming summer move from Liverpool, questions were immediately raised as to how hard manager Brendan Rodgers tried to keep his side’s talisman on board.

One of the first to do was former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who wrote in his column for the Daily Mail that “I cannot help feeling Liverpool’s hierarchy should have done more to ensure he remained at Anfield.”

Carragher continued: “Surely they could have come up with an arrangement that would have benefited all parties in the short and long term?”

Unfortunately, this is a wholly sentimental view, and accusations levelled at Rodgers—who has publicly backed Gerrard throughout his tenure—are unjust.

Liverpool will have tried all that they felt they could realistically do to convince Gerrard to stay at the club.

Ultimately however, the captain’s decision is based on an evaluation of facts, and is as pragmatic and commendable as they come.

Gerrard’s Desire for Week-In, Week-Out Football

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 2, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the second goal against Leicester City during the Premier League match at Filbert Way. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In summarising his decision, Gerrard made an interesting concession:

“My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life and I also want to make sure that I have no regrets when my playing career is eventually over.

It has become abundantly clear that Gerrard maintains the need for regular football, rather than stagnate regretfully on the substitutes’ bench.

Rightly so too, most Liverpool fans would perish the thought of their most-cherished player fading into Merseyside obscurity for the next season or so.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 29, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard comes on to replace Lucas Leiva against Stoke City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Gerrard admitted in an emotional interview this week, “the key conversation or moment [in my decision] was with the manager when he sat me down not so long ago and said it was time to manage my games for me and for the team.”

“When you’ve been a starter and a mainstay in the team for such a long time, it was a very difficult conversation to have with the manager.”

As Gerrard’s closest footballing confidant, Carragher also noted in his column that game-time was big on the list of the midfielder’s requirements in contract negotiations with Liverpool this season:

“I have spoken to him on many occasions about the transition from being one of the first names on the teamsheet to having your appearances managed. It is difficult and that, in all honesty, was the main reason I retired. He is now missing one game in three and, in all likelihood, next season that would have risen to one in two. Steven is not someone who would be comfortable just sitting on the bench and, in that sense, he has made the right decision.”

Gerrard clearly, and understandably, wanted to maintain a headline fixture at the club, but this proved to be too big a demand for Liverpool.

Rodgers’ Best Interests

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, December 6, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers prepares to bring on substitute captain Steven Gerrard against Sunderland during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Naturally, Rodgers couldn’t afford to fulfil Gerrard’s wish of week-in, week-out football at Liverpool, with the club competing on four fronts this season after gaining qualification for the Champions League in 2013/14.

All but the hardiest of footballing battle-axes struggle to perform twice in a week, let alone with games spanning Sunday to Wednesday to Saturday, for example.

This season, for example, John Terry is the only outfield player in the 34-and-over bracket to have featured for more Premier League minutes than Gerrard. LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 29, 2013: Chelsea defenders Branislav Ivanovic and captain John Terry during the Premiership match against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)Chelsea defenders Branislav Ivanovic and captain John Terry during the Premiership match against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

As a centre-back at Chelsea, Terry is supported by the able and defensively diligent Cesar Azpilicueta, as well as maintaining a freakishly consistent level of performance.

Gerrard is not provided the same level of support, and no longer boasts that level of consistency.

As Rodgers himself underlined on Gerrard’s decision: “His role is slightly different now, he still sees himself wanting to go on and play for a couple of years. Naturally at this level it was going to taper over the next couple years.”

Games such as December’s 4-1 victory over Swansea City give an indicator of Rodgers’ vision at Liverpool.

A free-flowing, high-pressure attacking system thrived at Anfield and, serving as a stark reminder, Gerrard didn’t feature at all in this game.

The following game saw Liverpool overrun for large portions of the game as they welcome Leicester City on New Year’s Day—this time, Gerrard started and played the full 90 minutes.

With this as evidence, it seems in Rodgers’ best interest to keep Gerrard in a marginalised role, but with the captain effectively demanding regular first-team football if he was to stay on, how could the manager sate both areas?

An Unavoidable Outcome

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 14, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard looks dejected as his side lose 3-0 to Manchester United during the Premier League match at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In the end, with Gerrard announcing his summer departure, Rodgers casts a resolute figure.

The manager will have done all he could to persuade his captain to stay at the club, but ultimately could not offer him the requisite game-time.

It is a great wrench, naturally, to see such a long-serving, loyal and ultimately important player leave the club, but it should be encouraging to Liverpool fans that there is no sentimentality in this decision.

Gerrard’s moving to MLS is for a want of sustained football, and Liverpool couldn’t offer him that, physically.

What should be most assuring for Liverpool fans is how Rodgers kyboshed any sentimentality in his team selection for the rest of the season—there will be no unwarranted Gerrard selections.

“I will always pick the best team for any game. It hasn’t changed, he understands where it’s at and the number of games he will be playing. There will be no change to that, I will pick the team to get the best physicality.”

Perhaps the only change will be for the positive: Rodgers will no longer look to assure Gerrard of his long-term future at the club, and the captain will see his game-time understandably reduced.

Could Brendan Rodgers have managed Steven Gerrard any better so far this season? Let us know in the comments below.

Why Brendan Rodgers Is Not to Blame for Steven Gerrard Catch-22

Sekian.

Following Steven Gerrard&039;s announcement that he will leave Liverpool for the United States at the end of the season, there seems little point putting what he means to the Kop in words.

Gerrard is everything Liverpool - and always will be.

There is little point ranking the tributes pouring in in his honour, from Robbie Fowler to Jamie Carragher to Kenny Dalglish - or the words of every single Liverpool or even football fan.

But, if there is one that stands out, it&039;s Zinedine Zidane&039;s.

Zidane, a man who won it all and one of the greatest midfielders in history, is as full of praise for Gerrard now as he has ever been.

And, if anyone knows a thing or two about playing in midfield, it&039;s Zizou.

"I have said in the past that, at his peak, he was the best in the world," the France legend is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"I think it was the summer of 2004 I was having a conversation with Florentino [Perez] and I told him I wanted him to partner me in midfield for Madrid.

"I know the club tried twice but he wouldn&039;t leave Liverpool. Not many players turn down Real Madrid but I think that tells you a lot about the loyalty of the man.

"The years of him winning trophies are not behind him. I am sure he will be very successful in the MLS."

Italian side Fiorentina have confirmed that reported Liverpool target, Brazilian goalkeeper Neto, will leave the club at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old is one of a number of goalkeeper options Liverpool have been linked with in recent months as they seek a replacement for Simon Mignolet.

Fiorentina have announced on Saturday that “Norberto Murara Neto today officially informed the club of his intention not to prolong his contract with the Viola. The decision is definitive.

“Neto was keen to make it known that his decision is entirely unrelated to financial motivations, with his desire to be free to decide his own future the sole reason behind his move.”

Neto has seven cleansheets in 16 Serie A appearances this season.

Liverpool play their first FA Cup fixture of the season on Monday night when they travel south to take on AFC Wimbledon in the third round. Ben Twelves discusses the team selection options available to the Liverpool manager.

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool begin this season’s FA Cup journey against League Two side AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow on Monday night in what promises to be a tricky cup tie for the Reds.

Liverpool started 2015 poorly after they squandered a 2-0 lead against bottom-of-the-league Leicester City on New Year’s Day to draw 2-2 and Rodgers’ men will be looking to bounce back with a win at the first time of asking against Neal Ardley’s physical side to book their place in round four of the competition.

Despite taking a 2-0 lead thanks to Steven Gerrard’s brace from the spot, Liverpool produced a dire display throughout the 90 minutes against Nigel Pearson’s men – a complete contrast to three days earlier against Gary Monk’s Swansea – and the Reds need to improve once again as they look to extend their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions.

Monday’s match against The Dons will be the second of a hectic January for the Liverpool boss and his team, and ahead of another big Premier League match against Sunderland on Saturday as the Reds look to claw back the points on 4th place, Rodgers utilise his squad and rotate heavily for the fixture.

The Team

Dejan Lovren is set to return to the squad after missing the last four matches through a groin injury, though the match will come too early for Brad Jones, Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan and Joe Allen who all remain sidelined.

In a potential signal of intent from Rodgers ahead of the January transfer window, Mario Balotelli was left out of the matchday squad for the 2-2 draw with Leicester last time out, but the Italian could make a return for the cup tie with the match providing the perfect chance for Raheem Sterling to receive a desperately needed rest.

While Balotelli will be hopeful of receiving a recall, the match also presents the opportunity for a number of fringe players to get some game time under their belt and Javier Manquillo, Suso and Lazar Markovic will be expectant of that.

As Steven Gerrard played 90 minutes on New Years’ Day, the inspirational captain could drop out of the starting team as a result with another shirt available in the starting team for Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert, who will be vying for a starting berth in the Reds attack.

As well as Sterling, Martin Skrtel, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana would all also benefit from a night off for the cup clash after heavy involvement throughout the season, but with injuries restricting the ability to rotate in certain positions it’s unlikely they’ll all be left out.

Possible Line Up

After a congested fixture list and with games continuing to come thick and fast, it’s vital that Rodgers rotates his side as best as options allow him. Sterling is the priority to receive a well-deserved rest with his performance level having dipped in recent weeks no doubt down to the amount of time he has played this season.

Other options in the squad will allow the Liverpool manager to make changes elsewhere in his starting XI too and the Reds can still field a strong side despite rotation. One option to Rodgers – in keeping the 3-4-3 formation – is to line the team up like so:

Wimbledon line up

Another option for the Liverpool boss could be to change shape back to the diamond formation and that should see the Reds line up like so for the tie:

Wimbledon line up diamond

Liverpool must produce a ‘professional performance’ against the fourth division side on Monday night to ensure for a smooth journey into the fourth round of the cup the Reds last won in 2006.

With the chance for cup glory in Steven Gerrard’s final season up for grabs, it would be a fitting tribute for the greatest ever to bow out with another FA Cup win to his name (on his birthday too), but for that to happen the Reds must overcome Wimbledon to begin the road to Wembley.
