Raheem Sterling: Ready to step up

Raheem Sterling: Ready to step up

Ever improving Raheem Sterling is ready and willing to fill the void left by Luis Suarez at Anfield as a new 'SAS' takes hold, says Adam Bate.

Brendan Rodgers knows that when it comes to replacing the irreplaceable there are no easy solutions. Adam Lallana will no doubt slot in nicely, while Rickie Lambert offers a different threat. Lazar Markovic has considerable potential but his progress must be managed delicately.

In the meantime, Rodgers must do what he can. Against Southampton on Sunday, he opted for caution in terms of personnel if not style - effectively introducing Lucas Leiva in place of Suarez in a side reshaped from the one that so lit up last season's Premier League.

Raheem Sterling: Strokes the ball beyond Fraser Forster to open the scoring at Anfield

It's a formation that undoubtedly places increased responsibility on Sterling. The loss of Suarez can be measured in terms of the 43 goals and assists the Uruguayan was involved in last season in the Premier League alone. The shortfall must be made up somewhere.

Rodgers has clearly identified Sterling as the key to that. "Something we said to Raheem when he first broke into the team, and something we've reiterated, is that you have to have an identity as a player," said the Liverpool boss in midweek. "The identity he has is to score goals and create goals.

"That's what the job is. He scored 10 goals last year and this kid is only going to get better. When you're so young, it's important to understand exactly what your role is. Not just look good, you have to be efficient and effective."

There were promising signs in pre-season. The speed with which he latched onto a Lucas pass and fired beyond Joe Hart to score a late equaliser against Manchester City in New York was precisely the sort of impact play that Rodgers wants to see far more of. It didn't take long against Saints.

Raheem Sterling (31) was involved in both of Liverpool's goals in the win over Southampton

Sterling delivered a goal and an assist as Liverpool laboured their way to three points on the opening weekend. For all his brilliance last season, he was only directly involved in 14 Premier League goals for the Reds last term and didn't get his first goal or assist until December.

This was rather different. For the first goal, his out-to-in run and calm finish ensured that Jordan Henderson's marvellous efforts to set up the chance were not in vain. For Liverpool's winner, a brave header found its way to Daniel Sturridge just yards out.

He'll come up with better assists before long but Sterling has to be in the box to get them and that's exactly where he was - in the danger area making things happen. He had more shots on target that any player, more completed dribbles and nobody created more chances.

Speed

With Sterling, it happens at speed too. Premier League tracking data shows that he made 47 separate high-intensity sprints and only the impressive Nathaniel Clyne could better the 412 metres he covered at these speeds of 25.2km/h and above. It can be impossible to deal with.

He is still just 19 years of age and it's worth remembering that he was the youngest player to feature on either team at Anfield on Sunday in a game that included fresh-faced figures such as James Ward-Prowse and Lloyd Isgrove. But Sterling is ready to be the main man right now.

Those 43 goals still need replacing. Well, this was two for starters and three points Liverpool scarcely deserved. Efficient and effective, Rodgers demanded. As his young star clutched the man of the match champagne, it was hard to argue. Raheem Sterling had been exactly that.

New Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert is confident the players will hit their stride after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Southampton on Sunday.

The England international came off the bench to make his competitive debut against his former club at Anfield at a time when the visitors were looking the more likely winners following Nathaniel Clyne’s equaliser.

Liverpool had taken the lead when Jordan Henderson split the Saints defence with a measured pass allowing Raheem Sterling to score, and a late strike from Daniel Sturridge secured the points.

And the victory has set up the Reds for their away matches against Manchester City and Tottenham before the end of the month.

"I don't think we played badly, I just don't think it was as fluid as Liverpool can play," Lambert said.

"But I thought the first goal was excellent: a great pass from Jordan and a good finish and after some pressure from Southampton we came strong and got the win.

"It was a really hard game and it was a great three points. The first game is always nervous, you are never quite as sharp as you want to be.

"The first game everyone is excited and desperate to win and you are not sure how you are going to play and the quicker you can get that win the better.

"It makes you get into your rhythm a bit easier and faster. The win is perfect but we now have a few hard games coming up."

Lambert found himself in the unique position of being applauded by both sets of fans as he made his way onto the pitch with the 32-year-old warmly regarded by travelling Southampton fans.

"It was strange to come on against your old team-mates. I haven't had many situations like that in my career but you have to be as professional as you can," Lambert said.

"It was special from the Liverpool fans making my debut, which was a dream, and it was special from Southampton fans who showed a lot of respect and appreciation.”

Raheem Sterling wants more of the same from his teammates when they go to Manchester City next week after Liverpool beat Southampton in their opening Premier League game on Sunday.

Sterling got Liverpool’s season off to a flyer with a neat finish from Jordan Henderson’s through-ball on 23 minutes.

But Brendan Rodgers‘ side’s resolve was tested when Nathanial Clyne equalised shortly into the second-half.

Sterling praised the spirit and courage of Liverpool as they got themselves back in front — Daniel Sturridge scoring the winner with 11 minutes to go.

“If we play our normal game, we’ll be fine in those two games,” he told the club’s official website. “Today we showed courage and that’s what we need to show at City next week.

“It was a tough game towards the end and they pushed us all the way. But the most important thing is to get three points.

“Sometimes it’s not about pretty football, it’s about grinding out the result and that’s what we did today. And we showed some great football at times.”

With the victory, the Liverpool odds for winning the Premier League narrowed from 12/1 to 10/1.

The Reds must wait until Monday 25th August for their next Premier League encounter at City — looking to improve on the 2-1 defeat they suffered there last season.

City opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win at St James’ Park, but looked susceptible to waves of Newcastle pressure.

“We’ll go out and play our usual game, and hopefully we can get the three points,” Sterling added. “Last season we had a tough start as well but we got the wins.

“That’s what we’re looking to do, taking it game by game. We’ll go out there next week and try to do our best and get the three points again.”

After a good opening weekend for Liverpool, Jack Lusby brings you latest Liverpool transfer rumours, with a big-name striker once more on the agenda.

Fabio Borini v Yevhen Konoplyanka: Who would benefit Liverpool more next season?

According to reports in the Sunderland Echo , Black Cats boss Gus Poyet has set a Monday deadline for the protracted deal to sign Fabio Borini to be moved along, one way or the other.

It has been over two weeks since Liverpool accepted a £14 million bid from Sunderland for the Italian striker’s services.

However, there has been little movement since, with suggestions that the 23-year-old is not committed to a move to Wearside refuted.

Once more faced with questions on Borini’s will-he-won’t-he arrival, Poyet told reporters “I should know something today or tomorrow, I hope. We’ll see.”

Any hold-up could see Poyet turn his attentions elsewhere, with the Daily Mail reporting on Friday that the Uruguayan claimed “we are ready to move on and have another option.”

The Wearside publication continues that “the Echo understands that there is more to the hold-up than simply Liverpool waiting to sign another striker before they rubber-stamp Borini’s departure.”

More on that later.

Next up is another potential departure, with highly-rated Portuguese centre-back Tiago Ilori linked with a second loan move away from Anfield—this time with Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

Alan Nixon, writing for the Daily Mirror , reports that Ilori “will head back to Europe again for a year to increase his football education.”

Another season on loan suits the development of the 21-year-old, who remains behind Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho at least in the defensive pecking order.

To add to this, Ivorian centre-back Kolo Toure was included on the bench for Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Southampton after having turned down a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The young defender was spotted in attendance at Bordeaux’s comfortable 4-1 win at home to oil-rich Monaco.

Nixon continues “[Ilori] will have a chance to play at the top level with Les Girondins in the hope of returning as an Anfield first-teamer.

“Kop boss Brendan Rodgers rates Ilori highly and he also attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund – but a move to Germany fell through as they could not promise him [game time].”

Any further loan move for Ilori would hopefully be the Portuguese’s last, with many holding high hopes for the defender—next season, at 22, could be the perfect opportunity to burst through as a right-sided centre-back in lieu of Skrtel.

Prior to Liverpool’s weekend victory, former star striker Luis Suarez sent Rodgers a good-luck text message.

Initially laughing off the questions in typical fashion, the Ulsterman spoke of his continued admiration for the Barcelona man, with The Guardian quoting: “It was a real love-in. He’s a great boy but he is gone now.”

Before, during and after the Anfield win, much attention was—naturally—drawn to the loss of Suarez this summer, and Rodgers told reporters he is still looking for another striker this window.

“I do still think we need another striker. It is something that we will look at but that will depend on the availability of one.

“Sunday was about winning and we got there. So we will search for that through to the end of the window but you see the players, the quality that we have.”

This may well be what is holding up the Borini deal, with Rodgers clearly desperate to add to his attacking options which, sans the Italian, would consist of Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert alone.

One man who could aid an ailing strike force is PSG man Ezequiel Lavezzi, with the Daily Star speculating on the Reds’ interest.

Although hugely tentative given the credibility of the publication, the Argentine has been whispered by many in relation to a move to Merseyside this transfer window.

Bruce Archer, writing for the Star, claims “PSG were dealt a blow earlier in the summer when they were deemed to have breached Financial Fair Play rules, and…they now feel the need to move on some of their fringe players.”

“Although Lavezzi was considered a key player last season…negotiations over a new deal are reported to have broken down.”

The publication quotes Lavezzi’s price-tag as around £20 million.

However, any move for the forward could be hampered by a potentially serious injury to Swedish star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich.

A regular inclusion for Argentina at the World Cup, the forward is a versatile option able to play on either wing or as an auxiliary striker.

Lavezzi, 29, scored nine goals in 32 games last season for the Ligue 1 giants.

Finally, Liverpool have once more been linked with another Ligue 1 star, Radamel Falcao, as the chase for a striker ostensibly hots up.

Italian football pundit Mina Rzouki seemingly boosted the Reds’ chances by rejecting reports linking the Colombian goalscorer with a loan move to Serie A side Juventus.

The 28-year-old is reportedly keen to move on however, although The Independent report that Liverpool would have major competition for the signing of the forward.

The publication claims that La Liga behemoths Real Madrid remain interested in a move for Falcao.

This is despite the club edging closer to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play restrictions having signed James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Keylor Navas in big-money deals already this summer.

Simon Rice writes “Madrid want to take Falcao on loan and make the deal permanent next summer, however Monaco believe that the Spanish club should pay up front for the striker.”

Seemingly implicating an act of spite by the Ligue 1 side, Rice continues “[With Monaco] sympathetic to Falcao’s desire to move on, a loan to an alternative club would be considered.”

This is where Rodgers’ Liverpool could come into play.

Ben Jefferson, writing for the Daily Express , claims the Reds are interested in signing Falcao on loan.

However, the Colombian’s reported wages whilst on Merseyside would be a ridiculous £200,000-a-week.

“Monaco still fully expect Falcao to make a permanent move to Real next summer they would reportedly consider loaning him out to another club – including Liverpool – for the time being.

“It is thought that Falcao wants £200,000-a-week to consider a move and that could force Liverpool to look elsewhere.”

It is safe to assume holding one’s breath is not advised with this deal.

Should Liverpool pay over the odds to sign Falcao on loan this summer? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his desire to sign another striker before the transfer window shuts.

Rodgers saw his side beat Southampton 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday courtesy of strikes from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.

With last season’s top goalscorer Luis Suarez having left the club in a £75m deal to Barcelona, and doubt surrounding the future of Fabio Borini, Rodgers remains keen to add to his front-line.

"I do still think we need another striker,” Rodgers said. “It is something that we will look at but that will depend on the availability of one. Sunday was about winning and we got there.

"So we will search for that through to the end of the window but you see the players, the quality that we have.”

Sturridge’s winner on Sunday was his 36th goal for Liverpool in just 50 matches and Rodgers is pleased to see the 24-year-old picking up from where he left off last season.

"For Daniel, it was just a continuation, showing he can get goals," Rodgers said.

"That is 36 goals in 50 appearances which is (almost) the best of any strike in Liverpool's history. That shows the level he is at.

"He always looks like he will score. It was a poacher's goal, one of those where you anticipate a knockdown."

Rodgers also revealed Suarez had been in touch with the squad prior to Sunday’s game, but insisted Liverpool are now very much looking to the future following the Uruguayan’s departure.

“Our ambitions here at Liverpool have to be bigger than one player. Big clubs lose players and our ambitions are bigger than Luis,” Rodgers added.

"He sent us a lovely text wishing us all the best, which was a great gesture. He is a friend now of Liverpool. I texted him back. He's a great boy but he is gone now.”

Brendan Rodgers recently compared Raheem Sterling’s goal against Man City in pre-season to that of a finish akin to Lionel Messi. Jack Lusby believes the 19-year-old is unfazed by any such pressure.

Coming off the back of a storming performance during Sunday’s 2-1 home victory over Southampton, Raheem Sterling looks every bit likely to fulfil the considerable expectations weighed onto his young shoulders.

The biggest yet may have come from the Reds’ manager, Brendan Rodgers, last week.

Following a successful spell in pre-season, the Ulsterman compared his young charge to one Lionel Messi.

According to the Liverpool Echo , the manager claimed:

“[Sterling] has to score goals and create goals. That’s what the job is. He scored 10 goals last year and this kid is only going to get better.

“When you look at the finish against Manchester City in New York, how many times have we seen Messi produce a touch like that?”

The manager then clarified in his pre-Southampton press conference:

“I didn’t say Raheem Sterling was like Lionel Messi, I was a bit shocked to read I’d ‘said’ that. He’s a great young talent though.”

Regardless, given Sterling’s impact for the Reds in 2014, the youngster has immense potential—but is the Messi comparison a step too far?

The Liverpool manager has made a similar mistake before, referring to the then-new signing Joe Allen with a tongue-in-cheek “Welsh Xavi” comparison during the Being: Liverpool documentary.

The midfielder recently refuted such claims, but sees them as an inspiration.

Clearly in the same vein, Rodgers believes that Sterling can become one of the most important players in his squad for now and for the foreseeable future—big pressure for a 19-year-old.

This is seemingly apparent beyond the Northern Irishman too, with a large measure of Liverpool’s hopes for the season being placed at the feet of the former QPR youngster.

This may seem like overzealous man-management on behalf of Rodgers — overhyping a player can often be the beginning of his downfall — but Sterling’s performance against Southampton on Sunday shows the forward is truly unfazed by any pressure.

Liverpool 2 – 1 Southampton

The opening weekend victory over Southampton at Anfield will not go down as one of the Premier League’s most eye-catching of fixtures—or a classic in the Liverpool annals—but the Reds left with a vital three points all the same.

This was in a large part due to the contributions of Sterling, who scored one and assisted Daniel Sturridge’s late winner.

Sterling was deployed, initially, on the left of a three-strong attacking midfield, with Philippe Coutinho as the No. 10 and Jordan Henderson on the opposite flank.

Coutinho was consistently marked out of the game by an imperious Victor Wanyama, and it is no surprise that the Brazilian was substituted late on.

Sterling capitalised somewhat on his teammate’s marginalisation.

Any pressure heaped on Coutinho by Southampton’s midfield allowed Sterling to drift intelligently into space and run behind defenders—a trait most common within the teenager’s game already.

This allowed Sterling to collect a sensational lofted-through ball courtesy of Henderson and fired past Fraser Forster into the Saints’ net.

Following Coutinho’s withdrawal, and Rickie Lambert’s introduction, Sterling moved into the central attacking role behind the forward two; here, Liverpool’s system adapted to great effect.

With more of an emphasis on wide-play—with the swashbuckling Javier Manquillo particularly effective here—Sterling was able to latch on to a partially-cleared cross to nod the ball across for Sturridge to convert.

Sterling was duly awarded Sky Sports’ man-of-the-match award, underlining the forward’s ability to perform exceptionally despite such weighty pressure.

Looking Onwards

Overall, whilst this opening weekend victory was a much tougher task than perhaps was expected, this was an encouraging performance for the Reds.

A title-challenge will require results ground from the clutches of disappointment, and players such as Sterling—unfazed by this pressure—will be paramount.

The reluctant performance of Coutinho could well see the youngster move into a central role at times, and Rodgers’s targets for Sterling will require the forward to contribute frequently in front of goal.

A return of 10 goals and 10 assists should be considered a success for a player already so ahead of his development—this should be pressure enough.

Collecting his man-of-the-match award during a post-match interview, Sterling was typically phlegmatic in his evaluation, telling Sky Sports:

“It’s great to get off to a good start…they made us work really hard, but the boys grind through and luckily at the end we got the goal.”

The 19-year-old will do well to preserve this modesty.

Comparing Raheem Sterling to Lionel Messi is perhaps as helpful as comparing Joe Allen to Xavi, in this witless populace, but continue this progress and the forward can become as important to the Reds as the Argentine is to Barcelona.

How important will Raheem Sterling be for Liverpool this season? Let us know in the comments below.

Raheem Sterling Unfazed by Pressure as Liverpool’s Key Man

Luis Suarez sent Liverpool a good-luck message ahead of his former club's Premier League opener against Southampton.

Brendan Rodgers revealed following Liverpool's 2-1 victory at Anfield that he received a text from the striker on Sunday morning.

"Luis Suarez sent us a lovely text this morning, wishing us all the best and telling us to start strong - it's a lovely gesture," said Rodgers.

"He sent the text to me personally. What did it say? Don't be so nosey! I texted him back. It's a great love-in I've got with him!

"He's a great boy, but he's gone. It was a lovely touch. Liverpool will always be in his heart."

Suarez was Liverpool's top scorer last season with 31 league goals, but he was sold to Barcelona last month after being given a four-month ban by FIFA for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

It was the third such incident of the Uruguayan's career.

Daniel Sturridge, Suarez's former strike partner, scored Liverpool's winner against Southampton, but Rodgers said that he would look to bring in another striker before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

"We're bigger than any one player," Rodgers said, in reference to Suarez's departure.

"I still think we need a striker, so we'll search through until the end of the window for that."

Suarez could make his Barcelona debut in a friendly against Mexican side Leon on Monday, after the conditions of his suspension were relaxed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Liverpool edged a tense clash with Southampton, as Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge fired the Reds to victory. Henry Jackson assesses each Reds star on the day. Where do you agree and disagree?

Liverpool 2-1 Southampton

Premier League, Sunday 17th August 2014

SIMON MIGNOLET- 7 (out of 10)

The 26-year-old looked a little shaky in the first-half- admittedly the wind was tough to deal with- but he improved greatly after the break, and made a fantastic save to deny Morgan Schneiderlin late on.

JAVIER MANQUILLO- 6

The young debutant enjoyed a solid first competitive game for the club, and is sure to grow in stature by the week.

The 20-year-old was reliable defensively, but could have offered more going forward rather than turning back every time.

MARTIN SKRTEL- 7

The Slovakian was dependable all afternoon, and although his centre-back partner Dejan Lovren was slightly better, his reading of the game and leadership were good throughout.

DEJAN LOVREN- 8

Lovren enjoyed a superb Premier League debut for the Reds, oozing class on the ball and bringing an air of calm to the defence that was lacking last season.

The 25-year-old looks a terrific acquisition.

GLEN JOHNSON- 4

It might be a new season, but it was very much a case of same old Johnson.

The 29-year-old was slow on the ball, poor defensively and generally looked a weak link. The appearance of Alberto Moreno in a Reds shirt can’t come soon enough.

LUCAS LEIVA- 4

Lucas was extremely poor, on a day when he had the chance to impress Rodgers.

The Brazilian offered nothing in terms of creativity, lost the ball in key areas and was partly at fault for Southampton’s goal. Not good enough.

STEVEN GERRARD- 6

It was far from the skipper’s most influential performance, but he showed constant endeavour and made a number of good defensive interceptions.

His passing range was a little off, and he looked a little leggy, but the 34-year-old will only improve in the coming weeks.

JORDAN HENDERSON- 7

The 24-year-old grew in stature as the game went on, and while others around him began to tire his energy was key.

His passing was neat and tidy, and although he’s played better over the last year or two, he was still one of Liverpool’s standout players. Superb pass to set up Sterling for the opener too.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 5

The diminutive Brazilian has been wonderful in pre-season, but he was well below his brilliant best against the Saints.

The 22-year-old was starved of space throughout, and he appeared to be trying too hard to produce the killer ball at times.

RAHEEM STERLING- 8

Sterling was Liverpool’s best player on the day- Lovren pushed him close- offering a constant threat that others around him didn’t.

The 19-year-old took his goal expertly, before setting up Daniel Sturridge for the winner. He has become a vital player at the club.

DANIEL STURRIDGE- 7

Sturridge wasn’t at his best all afternoon, but like Stoke on the opening weekend last season, he proved to be the match-winner in a tight contest.

The 24-year-old lost the ball too easily at times, but his well-taken winner from close-range proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Substitutes

JOE ALLEN (on for Lucas 62)- 6

Although the Welshman was far from spectacular when he came on, he offered much more movement and creativity than the disappointing Lucas.

RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Coutinho 76)- 6

The 32-year-old’s physical presence offered Liverpool something they’ve lacked for a while, and his arrival on the pitch gave Southampton’s defenders something different to think about.
