MANAGER REACTION-Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has received criticism from some for Sunday’s result, but Liam Jones has a question for those detractors and support for the boss.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 27, 2014: Liverpool take on Chelsea, with all 11 players inside their own penalty area, during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In his post match press conference, Brendan Rodgers made the point that it is not difficult to coach a team to play with 10 men behind the ball on the edge of their 18-yard box. Of course, everyone knows that this statement is entirely correct. You don’t need to be a tactical genius to instruct your defenders to stay deep and narrow, your midfielders to squeeze any space in front of the back four and your big, brute of a centre forward to stay up-field and wait for the inevitable long ball to battle for. But did these supposedly simple tactics outsmart Rodgers?

On Sunday it seemed as though Liverpool ran out of ideas, or patience, or both. We lacked a “plan B” – whatever that is.

Rodgers has received some criticism for this, saying that this was his first massive tactical test, and he failed it. However, lets compare our struggles on Sunday with two out of the three best teams in the world at the moment, FC Barcelona and FC Bayern Munich.

Both of these teams play a similar brand of football to us, where we like dominating the ball and taking the game to the opposition. This year, and in recent years for Barcelona, both teams have struggled when faced with opposition that is organised around its 18 yard box. Notable examples include the semi-final ties against Inter Milan in 2010 and Chelsea in 2012 for Barcelona, and the games away to Manchester United and Real Madrid this year for Bayern.

Pep Guardiola was manager for all four of these examples, and I don’t think that anyone can deny his ability as a first team coach. I argue that there are very few alternatives to playing against this sort of style, and the only possible ones require the manager to abandon his footballing philosophies, which neither Rodgers or Pep have ever seemed to consider.

We, also, are all very effective at pressing high up the pitch and forcing the opposition into either surrendering possession long, or losing the ball in dangerous areas. When you play against a team who set up like Chelsea did yesterday, this becomes largely redundant, as when the opposition do have the ball, they look to get it forward as quick as they can and so reduces the opportunity to dispossess them high up the pitch.

Many people complained about a lack of a plan B, and have done in the past for Barcelona and Bayern Munich too, but very few actually provide any suggestions for what that plan B should be.

The overriding suggestion I have heard was to set up in a similar style to Mourinho’s men, and either see out a boring 0-0, or maybe nicking a goal or two on the counter attack. In hindsight, this may have worked, as all we needed was a point out of the game to remain clear favourites for the title.

I have no doubt that Rodgers recognised before the game that Chelsea would set up like they did, although he probably couldn’t have predicted just how defensive Chelsea would be. So during his planning for the game, he had a choice; either abandon his philosophies and fight fire with fire; or stick to his guns and trust his team to pull through.

Mistakes Can’t Be Predicted

It is impossible to predict mistakes when making your plan for the game. You know that mistakes will be made during the game, but you can’t predict when they will be made and what effect they will have. No matter which way Rodgers chose to set up against Chelsea, there was the possibility that one of our players could make a calamitous error that could lead to a goal conceded. With this in mind, if we made no mistakes defensively then we would probably get at least a draw, no matter which way we came out to play.

By playing the way we did, it gave us the option to win the game, whereas setting up defensively would have made the chances of a Liverpool win very unlikely. If it were not for that Gerrard mistake on the stroke of half time, I think we would have gone on to win the game. At the very least, I couldn’t see us losing the game, and I am confident that Rodgers shared this belief: that if we didn’t make a huge defensive mistake we would get at least a draw, which would keep us in the title race driving seat.

It just so happens that we did make an error that lead to a goal, and from then on I couldn’t really see us getting back into the game. But until that point, everything was going to plan for us. We looked dangerous, although we didn’t have any clear-cut chances, and we weren’t really being troubled defensively.

And then after the goal, what could Rodgers change? We were already the only team attacking, the only team trying to score a goal, there’s not a lot more that we could have done. We couldn’t have started playing long into the box as we don’t have the personnel for that, and we made all the attacking substitutions possible with the squad we have.

The way I see it, Rodgers went into the game with the right idea, and did all he could do as the game progressed to help change it, but he can’t be blamed for a mistake that no one could ever have predicted. Even though we didn’t get a positive result, we can come out of the game with our heads held high knowing that we haven’t abandoned our philosophy, and even if it doesn’t work out the way we all now want it to this season, the fact we’ve stuck by our principles will do us good in future seasons to come, I have no doubt about that.

But for now, lets not stop believing, both in the team and in our manager, and lets bounce back against Crystal Palace.

Suso telah menjadi &039;wira&039; Almeria selepas berjaya menjaringkan gol kedua menerusi sepakan percuma yg menarik & membolehkan Almeria menang 2-1 keatas Espanyol tempoh hari.

Selain Almeria, Sevilla juga berminat untuk mendapatkan khidmat pemain ini tetapi bukan sebagai pemain pinjaman tapi mahu mendapatkannya secara tetap.

If you allow yourself to believe the nay-sayers on Twitter and the other social networking sites then thats exactly what Sunday was. Jim Fishlock however, has a different view.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 27, 2014: Liverpool take on Chelsea, with all 11 players inside their own penalty area, during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Right now we are still sitting comfortably at the top of the league. Admittedly not as comfortably as we were in the minutes leading up to the Chelsea game at Anfield but there we proudly sit.

We have the points on the board. 80 of them. It’s an incredible turn around from this time last season when we had a pathetic 55. 2 wins from the remaining 2 games gets us to 86 points. Yes, Manchester City will finish above us on goal difference if they win their next 3 games but that, in my opinion is a very big if.

Personally, I will be amazed if we are not Champions come 6pm on May 11th 2014.

Football, as was once stated, is a funny old game. Prior to kick off against Chelsea all the talk was of our almost first choice side tearing into Jose’s 3rd string also rans and all but sealing our very first Barclays Premier League title.

It didn’t work out that way as we are all aware.

We can point the finger at Jose’s tactics, his style of play and the time wasting that was in affect from the very first minute. However, there is no rule in football that you have to play a certain way. You are under no obligation to entertain, you do what you can to win. Plain and simple.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 27, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Chelsea's manager Jose Mourinho during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

That doesn’t sit well with most of us. After all, we have been spoilt this season by a team that plays football the way we believe it should be played. We press, we are slick, incisive, imaginative and pacy. No only that but we score goals. Bucketfuls of goals.

Chelsea found a way to nullify all of that, and for that, they deserve credit. They had a game plan and they executed it perfectly.

If I am to be slightly critical of the performance yesterday then it would be the lack of width. Glen Johnson was always coming back inside into traffic and the blue wall that sat in front of the Chelsea penalty area. Jon Flanagan was also guilty of this, however, it is natural for him to want to come inside on his stronger right foot. As i said, I am nitpicking really.

So we need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and as the saying that has taken over our world it seems goes, We Go Again!

You see, Liverpool don’t do things the easy way. Remember 2005? 2006? and even 2011. Our last 3 trophies have all been won in the hardest of ways.

As fans we are put through the mill constantly. This title run in was going far too smoothly. 11 wins in a row, 5 points clear and practically unbeatable at Anfield. We were getting far to comfy with our predictions that we would go on and win this league title. We probably needed a reality check.

Realistically the run couldn’t continue and although it would have been far more palatable had we managed to salvage a draw on Sunday afternoon it wasn’t to be.

So now we sit and stew and wait for Bank Holiday Monday.

When I think of Brendan Rogers and Dr Steve Peters planning how they will approach this week I am strangely comforted. After all, Rodgers is the man who has guided us to this incredible position. Dr Peters is the man credited as the key to unlocking the potential inside Daniel Sturridge and of helping Steven Gerrard reach the heights he has this season.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 6, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premiership match against West Ham United at Upton Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

We have had set backs this season and have always bounced back. The 31st of January was our last set back. We missed out on yet more signings and it appeared we would fall away in the race for the top 4 never mind the title. Rodgers assured us all that the team would be galvanised and how right he has been. 11 league wins in a row speaks for itself.

So we approach the last 2 games in the same manner we have approached the previous 12. We concentrate on the things we do so well. We go out and express ourselves, play the way we play and have the confidence that that will lead to goals and 3 points.

Sunday was disappointing that goes without saying, was it the day the dream died? Not a chance! We Are Liverpool, we dare to dream and the dream is very much alive!

Luis Suarez (r): Shows his frustration during Liverpool defeat

Luis Suarez (r): Shows his frustration during Liverpool defeat

Rich Kitto believes Liverpool's defeat to Chelsea on Sunday highlighted the lack of depth in their squad rather than any tactical failing.

Time, the indefinite progress of events and existence, has been a key facet in the narrative of Liverpool's title pursuit this year - the long overdue desire to reclaim a perch since taken by a rival and end a 24-year wait, the premature progress of a team in transition lead by a young manager, and the fading chances of a home-grown club captain to recognise a dream.

And in the additional minutes of the first half, as Steven Gerrard slipped over trying to chase down a ball that snuck under his boot, in turn releasing Demba Ba through on goal for Chelsea, time stood still. A season's hard work, a career's hard graft, pulled from under him in the most ironic and cruellest of manners.

Steven Gerrard: Crucial slip handed Chelsea their opening goal

The defeat to Chelsea was a hard lesson learnt at the expense of all those associated with Liverpool, neatly tying into the pre-match narrative of Brendan Rodgers, the pupil, coming up against his former master, Jose Mourinho.

Of course, Mourinho has since stolen all the headlines and plaudits - a tactical genius, a magician of the dark arts, a born winner - but how could Rodgers really compete with a team that were tooled with far better equipment than them?

So much of Liverpool's unexpected title challenge has been attributed to their lack of European commitments and distractions compared to their adversaries.

That's a fair comment, although there are both plusses and minuses to the absence of competing among Europe's elite, and whilst supporters of the Reds will feel rightfully disheartened by Sunday's events, they mustn't forget the key objective for the season has already been achieved.

Yes, as a result of this season's overseas exile, Rodgers has maintained a fresh team (not squad - more of that in a moment) whilst domestic competitors faced midweek games and tiring journeys abroad.

As such, the manager has had more time to focus and dedicate time on the training pitch, enabling the coaching staff to fine tune the fast-paced counter attacking football we have come to associate the club with this season.

Although at Anfield on Sunday, despite the fixture being sandwiched between two Champions League ties against Atletico Madrid, it was Chelsea that gained most advantage from their persistent presence in the tournament over the years.

The rumours were rife prior to kick-off around what sort of team Mourinho would name in light of Wednesday night's game. Jon Obi Mikel was set to play at centre half; Andre Schurrle as the lone front man; even Hilario was named in some provisional team sheets.

Jose Mourinho: Still managed to name strong team

But, even in the forced absence of Petr Cech, John Terry, Ramires and Eden Hazard, the Blues were able to name a team full of experience and quality, and much to their credit the team was absolutely excellent. Even young Czech defender Tomas Kalas, who was making his debut for the club, excelled.

Imagine the side that Liverpool would have been forced to name without their star men. In fact, such is the depth, or rather lack of it, in Rodgers' squad that Jordan Henderson's needless dismissal in the final stages against Manchester City two weeks back has been really felt.

Lucas, for all that he works hard, is not a playmaker, and his inability to move the ball forward and find the right space was a crucial reason for Liverpool's lack of exploits in front of goal. It meant that Philllipe Coutinho was forced into more defence splitting balls than normal, ultimately costing possession, in order to try and bring Suarez into the game.

Whilst the absence of European competition does have its advantages, the club's ability to attract the top players, despite the allure of the Liverpool brand name, is severely damaged, and as such Rodgers did not, and does not, have the quality of player to call upon that Chelsea and Manchester City have.

This was exemplified by the substitutions on Sunday. To sure up the defensive line whilst ensuring an attacking presence, Mourinho brought on around £100million worth of talent in Gary Cahill, former Liverpool star Fernando Torres, and Willian - with the two latter combining for the second goal in the dying embers.

There will be no irony lost on the Liverpool supporters watching Willian come on late and then proceed to score the goal that put the game out of reach, as the Brazilian was pursued at length by the Reds in the summer only for him to pick Stamford Bridge as his destination.

Iago Aspas: Introduced as substitute by Brendan Rodgers on Sunday

In contrast, Rodgers brought on Iago Aspas, who has been extremely disappointing since his arrival in the summer and will likely move on when the window re-opens, and a not fully fit Daniel Sturridge, a player, of course, not considered to be good enough to make the grade at Chelsea 18 months ago.

The fact that Rodgers only decided to use two of the allotted three subs even when in desperate need of a goal proves the lack of belief he currently has in his bench.

In fact, its fair to say that the only other option among similar circumstance he would have chosen would be to introduce loanee Victor Moses, who was ineligible to face his parent club.

After the defeat, there was a feeling around Anfield that all momentum has gone, and with it the chance of ending 24 years without a league title.

Those in the media and public will say that Liverpool have blown it, that it was all falling into their hands, and that they will never have another opportunity as good - all of which are contentious, but they now must rely on their cross-city neighbours Everton to do them a big favour.

Rodgers is expected to sign a new contract in the summer, and the club's managing director Ian Ayre has assured him that there are funds available with which to ready the team for a trip back into Europe.

It's obvious that the team needs strengthening in all departments, and equally that Rodgers must learn from the experience of Sunday if he is to avoid disappointment on the continental stage.

With the correct investment in the next window and the addition of those that can swing a game off the bench, Liverpool fans can still be confident that their team will be challenging for the big honours for some time to come

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Liverpool securing Champions League football for next season was paramount to keeping Luis Suarez at the club.

The Reds’ have already secured a top three finish, and despite losing to Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday, could still win the Premier League with victories against Crystal Palace and Newcastle Utd, if Manchester City slip in any of their final three games.

Suarez tried to force his way out of his contract at Liverpool last summer when the club finished seventh and failed to qualify for UEFA’s elite competition.

However, after the 27-year-old Uruguayan signed a new contract in December and helping the club achieve qualification this season, big Champions League nights will return to Anfield next season.

“That was key to it. That’s what he was missing,” Rodgers is quoted by Sky Sports as saying.

“A player of Luis Suarez’s ability has to be playing at this level.

“His loyalty in staying at Liverpool, to continue to fight for the club to get us there, is remarkable really. Hopefully he gets the rewards for that with those big European nights next season.

“I’ve convinced players to stay and enjoy the style of football, which they do, but they also want to be competing in the best competitions.”

Suarez staying at Liverpool last summer was largely down to the club’s owners not being pressured into selling him, with principal owner John Henry going to the press to publicly deny Suarez his exit.

Rodgers also praised the work of the owners in the Suarez-Liverpool success story.

“He’s a guy that is strong-willed and strong-minded,” he added.

“The vision he had for the club was to keep the best players and to build with those players. We had to show our power as a club last summer.

“You see a lot of clubs where the power is with the players. But the power at our club is the football club itself. That will always be the case.

“The owners were brilliant. Obviously once he knew we weren’t going to sell him and why it was important for him to stay, he stayed and he has had a remarkable season.”

Suarez, who received the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday night, has scored 30 goals in 31 appearances for Liverpool this season.

Suarez staying at Liverpool hinged on Champions League qualification, admits Rodgers

Penyokong Liverpool tidak boleh merungut mengenai taktikal Chelsea.

Jamie Carragher mendedahkan Liverpool juga pernah menggunakan taktik yg sama ketika berdepan Barcelona pada tahun 2001.

"I remember going to Barcelona in 2001 in the UEFA Cup and we got a 0-0. We did exactly the same as what Chelsea did yesterday, we went there for our clean sheet. Johan Cruyff said after the game we were a disgrace to football.

Adam Griffies is asking for a sense of perspective after our defeat to Chelsea.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 27, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard looks dejected at the final whistle as Chelsea's ultra defensive play leads to a 2-0 victory during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Just a quick warning: I’m going to base this piece entirely around a cliché; those tired, futile delinquents which somehow manage to force their way into your consciousness and leave you almost obligated to call on them. It’s a dishonourable act I usually pride myself on resisting. But not this time. I can’t think of a more appropriate way to convey my current feelings. So out you come little fella.

Had we been offered our current league position to our past selves at the beginning of the season, the decision to metaphorically snatch the proposal and run with it as fast as we could would have been unequivocally unanimous. In fact, change the timing of the offer to January, a few months ago, and the reaction would have been the same. Anyone who says otherwise, is lying. That proves how far we have come, in such a short space of time.

But some people (our own supporters) seem eager to ignore our progress for some reason, instead preferring to whine. Maybe our ridiculous run of success since the turn of the year has left these people’s critical minds bubbling away for too long, with no real excuse to remove the lid and relieve themselves of their unwarranted anger. Well now is their chance, and heck are they enjoying it. “We were awful,” seems a popular, vitriolic outcry in response to Sunday’s 2-0 defeat.

But the truth is, a freak goal cost us the game. Without Stevie’s mis-control and subsequent slip, gifting Chelsea their first open-play opportunity of the game, their second goal simply wouldn’t have happened. In fact, had Ashley Cole not cleared off the line mid-way through the first half, the scoreline at the end of the game would undoubtedly have been a whole lot different, and Jose’s ‘tactical masterclass’ wouldn’t have looked so masterly after all.

The way the classless Portuguese set his team up and celebrated his team’s victory was an indication of our development under Brendan Rodgers. Teams are coming to Anfield fearful of what we can do to them. And that feeling will continue to grow.

Rodgers commented on Chelsea’s dour style of ‘football’ post-match. “They parked two buses, rather than one. We were the team trying to win but we just couldn’t make the breakthrough. Just putting 10 players right on your 18-yard box is not difficult to coach, but it is obviously much harder to try and break through it,” he said.

“If a defensive style gets results, great. Jose has got his result here and he will be happy with that. But it is the polar opposite to how we work and hopefully over time our offensive mentality and aggression will get us long-term results.” The key phrase there is ‘long-term’. We are clearly evolving, on and off the pitch. If you don’t possess the patience to enjoy our development, have a look at the current Premier League table, sit back, and smile.

Despite what you twitter feed may have you believe, we are of course sitting at the summit of that aforementioned table. First place. Two points clear of our closest pursuers, with a couple of games remaining. Yes, we may well have just been beaten, but please get things into perspective. Sunday’s loss was our first Premier League defeat of 2014, and it ended an 11-game winning streak – a remarkable feat, the longest run of that kind in our esteemed history in fact.

We’re punching above our weight, there is no doubt about it. Yet so many ‘fans’ still manage to pick holes. Our aim prior to the season starting was to secure Champions League football; some even saw that as unrealistic. We reached that target, with ease, a couple of games ago. In fact, I’d bet a lot of those people, that laughed off our chances of regaining a place amongst Europe’s elite, were shamelessly laying into our players after defeat on Sunday.

No. That last paragraph isn’t me conceding the title to Manchester City and trying to dampen expectations. We still have a very, very good chance of pulling it off, despite what a reactive media insist on drumming into us. They never learn. Just in the last few months, they have pretty much handed the Premier League trophy over to three different teams: Chelsea, ourselves, and Manchester City. Before the festive period, Arsenal had it sewn up too, apparently.

We’ve fought our way into the title picture, a picture we had no real right to be in, and we’re still very much there. If you’re somehow finding the energy and audacity to moan, take a step back, remove your short-sighted, negativity blinkers and try to see the bigger picture. Add expletives anywhere in that sentence if you wish; they’ll fit snugly. You might then want to get back on this roller-coaster; a roller-coaster which doubtless has one or two twists in store yet.

We are Liverpool. And with a favour from our neighbours, we might well win the league.

We’re Top of the League, You Know

Adam Griffies is asking for a sense of perspective after our defeat to Chelsea.
