Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss is hopeful of success this season

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is confident his team can overcome Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final and use the experience as a springboard for the season.

The Reds host the semi-final first-leg at Anfield on Tuesday hoping to improve on recent results against Chelsea.

A 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge in November was preceded by a 2-0 reverse towards the end of last season which cost Liverpool vital ground in the title race.

Indeed Liverpool’s last victory over the Blues was a 4-1 success in May 2012 - which completed a league double over the Londoners - before Rodgers was at the club.

While the former Chelsea coach is keen to win his first trophy at Liverpool, Rodgers is adamant he will not sacrifice the chance of finishing in the top four to do so.

“Our objective is still very much to win a trophy and to qualify for the Champions League,” Rodgers said ahead of Tuesday’s Sky Live clash.

“I think that winning a trophy for us would help our future here and what we’re trying to build and what we’re trying to deliver. It will give the younger players lots of experience

“I remember being at Chelsea. I joined in 2004, and at that point in time in their history Chelsea were a club that wanted to win titles and win trophies.

“They’ve maybe done it in a different way, but they’ve certainly, over the last 10 years, shown that once you’ve won that first one that you can hopefully go on and sustain it.

“But they will tell you that the players back then, some of them who are still there now, that that first trophy at the time was the most important.

“And for us over these two games, we know it’s going to be a challenge but we know if you want to win the competition you have to beat the best teams. And at this moment in time Chelsea are the best in the country.

“But over two games we’re really looking forward to it because when we last played them we weren’t in a good moment. But now in this moment and the point of the season where we are at we are developing and improving and our confidence is very high.

“Two tough games but games that we are really relishing.”

Saya cuba untuk memeluk Emre Can, tetapi gagal. Saya boleh sahkan bahawa dia seorang lelaki yang kacak dan mempunyai rambut yang menarik."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his desire to win a trophy this season, while outlining the objective of qualifying for the Champions League too.

Screen Shot 2015-01-19 at 14.07.48

Rodgers explained back in pre-season that his desire was to win a trophy in 2014/15 and his side have an opportunity to take a significant step towards that when they face Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final first leg at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Northern Irishman recalled how important it was when Chelsea won their first trophy, building a winning mentality – something they achieved during his time at Stamford Bridge as a coach.

“Over the last 10 years they have shown once you win the first one, you can go on and sustain it,” he said.

“They [the Chelsea players who were there then] will tell you that first trophy was the most important. We know if you want to win the competition you have to beat the best teams.”

Speaking of the Chelsea clash itself, Rodgers said: “We see this as an opportunity this season to win a trophy.

“Winning a trophy could really bring the future of the team on. We see this as an opportunity to get to the final.”

Speaking of the season overall, Rodgers said: “Our objective is still very much to win a trophy and qualify for the Champions League.”

Liverpool are currently involved in four competitions, facing Chelsea this and next Tuesday in the League Cup, and Bolton at Anfield on Saturday in the FA Cup fourth round.

Lille striker Divock Origi is unlikely to join Liverpool in January

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the club are unlikely to bring on-loan striker Divock Origi to Anfield from Lille before the end of the transfer window.

The 19-year-old was signed by Brendan Rodgers for £10m from Lille in the summer under the proviso he would spend this season back on loan in France.

But with Origi struggling to hit top form, and Liverpool in need of extra strikers, there had been speculation the Premier League club were prepared to pay an extra £3m to bring him to Anfield this month.

But boss Rodgers said on Monday the 19-year-old will not arrive at Anfield until the summer and insists Liverpool have sufficient attacking options to help them achieve their target of a Champions League spot.

Daniel Sturridge is close to a comeback after five months out through injury, while Raheem Sterling, Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini, Rickie Lambert and Jordon Ibe are also available for Rodgers.

When asked about his plans for January, Rodgers revealed he did not expect to see many players arriving at Anfield and said much of the speculation was down to agents trying to get moves for their players.

Rodgers will be holding a news conference ahead of Liverpool's Capital One Cup semi-final first leg with Chelsea on Monday afternoon - you can watch it from 2pm on Sky Sports News HQ.

After impressing last season, Jon Flanagan has been sidelined with a knee injury for the whole of the current campaign, but he has finally returned to light training this month.

The 22-year-old has been struggling with the injury since pre-season and after a rest period it was decided in September he required surgery to remove fluid from his knee.

Brendan Rodgers said the England full-back was expected to be out for “a few months” at the time.

Rodgers has now provided an update when asked in an interview with radio station talkSPORT on Monday morning.

“It’s been difficult for Jon,” said the boss. “Last season he was absolutely superb and it’s just unfortunate that he’s picked up this injury [in the summer].

“[He’ll be] a little while out. We’re hoping that in the near future he’s going to be back fit and playing because he’s a very important young player for us.”

No timeline was set on Flanagan’s return but Liverpool fans will be hoping he can return soon and boost the squad in the latter stages of the season.

Rumours emerged on Sunday evening claiming Liverpool’s on-loan stiker Divock Origi will stay at Lille until the end of the season, having been linked with a January return to Anfield.

LILLE, FRANCE - Thursday, October 23, 2014: Lille OSC's Divock Origi in action against Everton during the UEFA Europa League Group H match at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

According to Paul Joyce of the Express , normally a reliable source of transfer-related news, the highly-rated young Belgian will stay with the Ligue 1 club until the summer. Brendan Rodgers is seemingly not requiring him to return to Merseyside this month. The always reliable Tony Barrett of The Times also took to twitter to confirm the news this morning.

With Daniel Sturridge close to a return from injury and Mario Balotelli set to stay for the time being – Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert’s goals against Aston Villa also outlined the depth in attack – Origi would likely just sit on the substitutes’ bench, which is of no benefit to either party.

Rodgers’ decision to bring back Jordon Ibe from his loan spell at Derby also seems to indicate that Origi will only come back in the summer.

After a promising start to life in France, the 19-year-old’s form has tailed off alarmingly, scoring just four times in 26 appearances.

Despite this, he is a huge prospect, with Belgium captain Vincent Kompany claiming he will one day become one of the world’s best strikers.

- Matyo kembali menunjukkan keyakinan diri

Jose Mourinho: Chelsea manager desperately wanted to sign Steven Gerrard in 2005

Jose Mourinho says his failure to sign Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard in 2005 remains one of his greatest transfer disappointments.

Mourinho was close to taking Gerrard to Stamford Bridge during his first spell in charge but the former England captain chose to stay at Anfield.

The 34-year-old will leave Liverpool this summer, when he ends a 17-year career in red by joining Los Angeles Galaxy, and ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Anfield in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup semi-final, Mourinho spoke of how he wanted Gerrard as part of a ‘dream’ midfield at the Blues.

"He (Gerrard) is a historical player for Liverpool, a historical player for the Premier League and an opponent I have always admired and respected," Mourinho said.

"We did everything to try (to sign him) and it was almost there. I was dreaming of (Claude) Makelele, Gerrard and (Frank) Lampard in midfield.

"We were playing in a proper triangle without a number 10 and playing Maka in front of the defenders. Me, Mr Abramovich and (former Chelsea chief executive) Peter Kenyon at that time, we dreamed of that.

"His people were open to him joining a top side like Chelsea. But to me personally he never said he would come. Never.

"He (Gerrard) was always a red and I think the decision was right."

Asked if Gerrrard's decision to stay at Liverpool was his biggest disappointment in the transfer market, Mourinho said: "Yes, but I have another one when I was trying Lampard to Inter.

"I was almost there and it didn't happen too. I had a couple of disappointments and that's normal in football."

Gerrard's slip against Chelsea at Anfield last season proved decisive in the title race as it led to Demba Ba’s goal in a 2-0 win for Mourinho's men which paved the way for Manchester City to seize the initiative in the title race.

The error has since become the subject of a song regularly belted out at Stamford Bridge but Mourinho says he wishes the Chelsea fans would not sing it as it shows a clear lack of respect to one of the finest players in Premier League history.

"The song that my fans have I don't like at all," Mourinho said.

"A couple of times it is good fun but to go and go and go, especially with a player like him who deserves respect, I don't think you don't need that.

"We have so many other songs, you don't need that one. I love this quote when he was saying in his life he would never score a goal against Liverpool. I love these words.

"I understand why he was - almost, almost, almost - coming to Chelsea. But he didn't and I respect that a lot."
