Dan Holland joins the masses by enthusing over Suarez and Sturride but also looks at a couple of worries on ultimately a very positive day at Anfield.

Liverpool 4-1 West Brom

Premier League

Well I’ve just woke up this Sunday morning and still can’t believe the quality of goals we were treated to yesterday by Messrs Suarez and Sturridge. Three out of the 4 goals are ‘Goal of The Season’ contenders in any season, and to think they were both the thickness of the bar away from scoring another contender each.

The form of these two phenomenal strikers is undoubtedly the main positive to come out of yesterday’s game but there were many other sub plots that left me with a very warm feeling as I walked away from Anfield yesterday but as always there are a couple of worrying points but these were massively outweighed yesterday.

Liverpool’s line up showed only one change in the starting XI with Lucas returning at the expense of Victor Moses who let’s be honest struggled with the ‘number 10’ role, this isn’t to say he’s not a good player and won’t play an important part in our season – he will. The bench also showed a lot of quality which is the first positive and to think we are still missing Coutinho, Enrique and Aspas, all of whom will be in and around the matchday squad. Lucas’ return saw Gerrard move into a slightly more advanced position which brought about positive number 1.

It would be foolish to say it was the Gerrard of old as he still isn’t reaching those peaks and by the way Fergie he is a top top player, better than you’ve ever had in that position, I digress. The skipper looked a lot livelier and a lot more involved specifically in the first 45 minutes. He had a wide range of passing, strong in the tackle and effectively ran the game. This was all encompassed in the build-up to Luis’ first, he was quick to read a pass from a West Brom player deep in our own half, the slightest toe end saw him break free and a strong run to around the halfway line saw him feed Aly Cissokho and the play built up before finally arriving at Suarez’s feet and the Uruguayan did the rest with a delightful nutmeg before finishing neatly inside the near post. Gerrard also supplied a delightful cross from a 2nd half free kick which ultimately resulted in Suarez’s hat trick goal.

Sandwiched between these two goals was a header from Luis Suarez that in my humble opinion is the best headed goal I have seen in over 27 years of watching football. Positive number 2 is Aly Cissokho’s return from injury, whilst he lacks the pace of Jose Enrique which may be limiting in some games; he is far more assured defensively and appears calmer and more precise in attacking positions with nearly all his advances into the final third seeing him provide a meaningful chance. On this occasion his tenacity was rewarded with a goal, the ball broke from Sturridge and what looked like being a 50/50 tackle for Cissokho ended with him playing an elevated ball along the edge of the box which Suarez met with unerring ease. The result was a speeding bullet of his head finding the very top corner of West Brom’s goal. Wow just wow!

Positive number 3 came in the shape of Lucas Leiva, the Brazilian was outstanding yesterday; the ‘penalty’ he gave away should never have been given so that aside it was a faultless display. He broke up the majority of West Broms forays into our half, he made last ditch tackles in his own penalty area and he was tidy in possession – everything you want from a defensive midfielder, on any other day he would have been a Man of the Match contender. Positive Number 4 was Martin Skrtel, another excellent display from the Slovak, yes he will come up against stiffer tests than Anichebe and an ageing Anelka, but he was commanding in the air and strong in the tackle with his headline act coming when he got back to an Anelka shot, clearing a goal bound effort before it crossed the line.

West Brom rarely troubled our back line yesterday but did have a 5 – 10 minute spell in the 2nd half after they were inexplicably given a penalty, Morrison sending Mignolet the wrong way. The Belgian keeper’s performance yesterday is my first negative but a very minor one at that. His form this season has been very encouraging so I know he is more than capable but yesterday he flapped at several crosses and was on a couple of occasions slow at coming off his line to collect the ball in his area meaning the defence had to deal with a ball facing their own goal. I’m sure it was just a bad day at the office.

As West Brom grew into the game I said to the guy sat next to me “we need to be careful because they look like getting the next goal and then we’ve got a game on” and about 60 seconds later I was made to look rather foolish as Daniel Sturridge scored World Class goal number three was scored.

Jordan Henderson won a strong header in the midfield, it broke to Sturridge who strode purposefully toward the West Brom goal before releasing the most delicious of chips that had Myhill floundering and the ball nestled beautifully inside the far post. Take a bow Daniel Sturridge, he and Suarez seem to be having a ‘goal off’ each trying to outdo each other and as I eluded to earlier they could have both had one more each Sturridge had a thunderbolt left footed shot from the edge of the box rattling the cross bar at the Kop end. Suarez also struck that cross bar with audacious overhead kick. Positive number 5 Luis Suarez, Positive number 6 Daniel Sturridge, Positive number 7 SAS!

When you have two players playing at their top of the game it rubs off on the fans and the atmosphere ultimately improves with the best 90th minute version of You’ll Never Walk Alone I’ve heard for some time. Also around the 90th minute was an interesting incident involving our new cult hero – Kolo Toure – and West Brom’s Sessegnon. When both were stood just in front of me ready to receive a throw-in the Ivorian had a good grab of Sessegnon’s backside! That is just a quick light hearted comment before a main negative to come from yesterday’s game.

The main negative is the mood of our gaffer! He seemed a very angry man yesterday despite probably our best performance of the season. Some of the rumours flying around yesterday regarding his personal life were also very worrying, mainly because it could be an unwelcome distraction in what promises to be a great season for LFC. Hopefully the rumours aren’t true and yesterdays ‘mood’ is just a reflection on BR’s strive for perfection from his players, but at times yesterday his moaning’s were picky at times.

On several occasions he berated Lucas and/or Glen Johnson for only being a few yards out of position when we had a set piece in advanced areas. He also was quick to criticise Cissokho despite him just having a hand in our first goal, he was shouting at the officials which is very unlike Rodgers. All in all he didn’t seem a happy man.

I don’t want to end on a negative note as I came away with a great feeling and a real positivity about the season. I am convinced we will finish top 4 this season and if we can get 8+ points away from home at the Emirates, Goodison, Stamford Bridge and the Etihad all before the turn of the year coupled with maximum points at home then a title challenge is very much a possibility. Cheer up Brendan, keep these results coming, its god to be a Red again.

Luis Suarez pulled off his best performance of the season so far, bagging himself a hat-trick and helping Liverpool to a 4-1 humbling of Steve Clarke’s West Brom on Saturday.

Suarez completed his hat-trick early in the second half when he headed in a Steven Gerrard free-kick for the first goal to be scored in front of the Kop in the league since Suarez himself equalised in the 90th minute against Chelsea back in April.

Daniel Sturridge scored the fourth goal with a sublime chip from the edge of the area over Baggies keeper Boaz Myhill for his tenth goal of the season.

After the match, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was jublulant with the form of his front two.

He told the club’s official website, “I think the front two were brilliant. Suarez’s goals were exceptional. He really exploited the space in front of their centre-halves.

“[For his first] he showed wonderful invention and creativity to nutmeg Olsson and then he took his shot really early.

“The second was a good team goal. We moved it well, the cross came in early and he guided the header in fantastically well. Then his third goal was from a great ball by Steven.

“He could have had more; he hit the crossbar and had some other opportunities in and around the area.

“I think it was his first hat-trick here at Anfield and you saw his commitment to the team and what we’re trying to do. It was a wonderful performance.”

Former French World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane has dismissed comments released this week by ex-Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson this week that Steven Gerrard has never been “a top, top player.”

MADRID, SPAIN - Tuesday, April 8, 2003: Manchester United's David Beckham and Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane during the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 41-year-old, who played a colourful career at the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid, described 71-year-old Ferguson’s comments as “strange”, insisting Steven Gerrard is one of the world’s best players of his generation.

Zidane is quoted in several of the Sunday papers, including the Mirror as saying, “For two or three years, Steven Gerrard was the best midfield player in the world. Even now he is playing at a high level for Liverpool and England.”

“Gerrard has been loyal to Liverpool throughout his career – which is great for them – but if he had wanted to leave four or five years ago then every top club in Europe would have tried to sign him.

“And they would have probably had to break the transfer record to do it.

“Alex Ferguson is obviously one of the most successful coaches the game has ever had. But I did find his comments about Steven Gerrard very strange. To say he is not a top player is wrong.”

Gerrard’s roll of honour during his career at Liverpool so far includes all major trophies except for the league title, having made 641 appearances for the club, scoring 161 goals.

Former teammate and now Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher said he was “flabbergasted” by Ferguson’s “wrong” comments in his book.

Writing in his column in the Daily Mail, Carragher retorted to Ferguson’s book, saying, “Gerrard won a Champions League final almost single-handedly in 2005. I didn’t see anyone do that for Ferguson on the two occasions Manchester United won it, 1999 and 2008.

“Ferguson’s opinion is authoritative but I’d love to know who he does class as a ‘top, top player’; he says Stevie never got a kick against Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, but I don’t remember that to be the case. What I do remember is Stevie scoring big goals against United —like the League Cup final in 2003 — and setting up winning goals for Danny Murphy at Old Trafford. I remember Stevie’s energy, desire and talent rattling United when we played them.

“Look at it the other way. Put Keane or Scholes in a Liverpool shirt and let them play against Stevie with the other alongside him. I would have been surprised if they could have done more on their own than Stevie. Keane and Scholes had the advantage of being surrounded by more great players.”

Gerrard celebrated scoring his 100th Premier League goal for the Reds last weekend, before helping Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge bag the goals in Liverpool’s 4-1 rout of West Brom on Saturday.

Zinedine Zidane and Jamie Carragher rubbish Alex Ferguson’s “strange” Steven Gerrard comments

Tahniah Luis. You&039;ll Never Walk Alone.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was pleased with how his team have started the season after a 4-1 win at home to West Brom.

Luis Suarez hit a hat-trick for the Reds and Daniel Sturridge added a fourth to keep the Anfield side in second place in the Premier League, despite James Morrison's penalty for the visitors.

Rodgers said: "I thought in the first half we were absolutely outstanding, passing and moving, the fluency was excellent.

"We obviously went 3-0 up and looked comfortable in the game, but bitterly disappointed because we were looking for a clean sheet, and it was a bad decision by the linesman.

"I thought the referee was excellent today, and was in a good position to see the penalty.

"The linesman has given it, and that gave them a little bit of momentum for about five or ten minutes.

"After we controlled the game again and Daniel got the fourth goal, which was outstanding, we went on and maybe could have got one or two more.

"It was a very impressive performance by the team against a very good side."

The Northern Irishman also praised his strike partnership of Suarez and Sturridge, saying: "They're very hard to contain because they've got different qualities and they're both goalscorers.

"It was an outstanding team performance today and the guys at the top end have done their job and got the goals."

Liverpool 4-1 West Brom

Brendan Rodgers kept with his three at the back formation, with Lucas Leiva replacing Victor Moses in the only change for The Reds.

Rodgers’ midfield consequently had much better control, with the triangle shape flipped so that Lucas held and Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson pressed higher up the pitch.

Henderson in particular was impressive, especially in the first-half. It was almost as though some comments this week had put his back out…

But it was up front where Liverpool were entertaining and impressive. Luis Suarez’s hat-trick was sensational, all three goals of the highest quality.

The first arrived on 12 minutes, beating two defenders, nutmegging the final man and with a very Suarez-like finish past the keeper.

5 minutes later the Uruguayan provided a stunning header from the edge of the box, an absolute bullet.

The hat-trick was completed on 55 minutes with a header from a superb Gerrard free-kick. Suarez’s sixth goal in four games this season.

There were more chances, Sturridge smashed against the cross-bar, but West Brom were given a lifeline as the linesman somewhat contentiously gave a penalty for a foul by Aly Cissokho on 66 minutes. James Morrison finished from the spot past Simon Mingolet.

Then came Sturridge’s sensational chip over the keeper on 77 minutes.

It was almost five when Suarez again hit the bar with an overhead kick.

Liverpool back up to second behind Arsenal – who they play next.

Watch the goals here

Liverpool: Mignolet, Toure, Skrtel, Sakho, Johnson (Kelly 62), Lucas, Gerrard (Allen 86), Henderson, Cissokho, Suarez, Sturridge (Alberto 89).

Subs not used: Jones, Agger, Sterling, Moses.

West Brom: Myhill, Jones, McAuley, Olsson, Ridgewell, Yacob (Brunt 69), Mulumbu, Amalfitano (Morrison 45), Anelka (Long 69), Sessegnon, Anichebe.

Subs not used: Daniels, Lugano, Vydra, Berahino.
