Roy Hodgson’s opening 2016 European Championships qualifier pitted England vs Switzerland, and with three Liverpool players involved Jack Lusby analyses their performances.

Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling discuss fresh start for England

Following England’s dismal 1-0 victory over Norway at Wembley last week, Monday night’s visit to Switzerland’s St. Jakob Park for the Three Lions’ first 2016 European Championships qualifying tie was a surprising relief.

Two goals from new Arsenal signing Danny Welbeck saw Roy Hodgson exorcise some of the media ghosts lurking following his side’s previous performance.

This was in part due to the formation utilised by the 67-year-old, reminiscent of the midfield diamond of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool.

Three Liverpool players were involved on the night, with Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling forming one half of the midfield, whilst striker Rickie Lambert was a late introduction from the substitutes’ bench.

With this in mind, how did the Reds trio perform for England vs Switzerland?

Jordan Henderson

Prior to the game, Henderson was reported to have suffered an ankle injury in training, and would be a doubt for the evening in Switzerland.

Nevertheless, the superhuman midfielder managed to start for the Three Lions—the hope being this wasn’t another test of resolve courtesy of Hodgson.

With the Three Lions aping the successful midfield diamond utilised by Rodgers at Liverpool, Henderson adopted his customary position on the right-hand side of the midfield; his energy and persistence is vital in this formation.

With Fabian Delph making his full debut for England on the opposite side of the diamond, Hodgson shrewdly complemented Henderson’s qualities in a similar mould to that of Joe Allen at Liverpool.

The Aston Villa man may or may possess the Welshman’s enduring quality, but brings a welcome tenacity to the Three Lions’ midfield alongside Henderson.

It was Henderson’s determination that provided England with the required thrust in order to kill the game off with Welbeck’s second on 90+4 minutes.

Still growing into his responsibilities for the Three Lions, but Henderson is becoming increasingly crucial for Hodgson’s side—a future captain.

Raheem Sterling

Deployed at the point of the diamond, the No. 10 role is now irrefutably Sterling’s best position.

Behind the forward two of Welbeck and Wayne Rooney, Sterling was tasked with provided a creative outlet, willing to accept the ball whenever required and offer a consistent option.

For the most part, Sterling managed this.

This was aggravated, however, as the Liverpool forward was shifted around the blocks with regularity throughout the game—at one point serving as a deep-lying playmaker in the interminably substandard Jack Wilshere’s absence—with the youngster a victim of his versatility.

In truth, this wasn’t quite a vintage performance by the 19-year-old.

However, as all great players somehow manage, Sterling still provided the vital cutting edge for England as part of two devastating counter attacks.

Firstly, England broke with pace, with Welbeck, Sterling and Wayne Rooney working well to cut through the Swiss defence for the former’s opener.

A precisely weighted cross from Sterling took out three Swiss players, allowing Welbeck to shin his attempt into the back of the net.

Secondly, with the game in its dying moment, Sterling collaborated with Henderson and Lambert, with the latter assisting Welbeck with his only touch of the game.

On the whole not one for the scrapbook for Sterling, but the Liverpool player is showing a true, enduring quality in his play no matter what the circumstance.

Rickie Lambert

Making a brief cameo, Lambert reprised the role that has become customary so far under Rodgers at Liverpool.

Gifted a mere five minutes at the St. Jakob Park, Lambert made his presence known by providing for Welbeck immediately; a crafty ball through for the Arsenal striker saw Lambert take the Swiss defence out of the game.

Welbeck finished with aplomb, and Lambert made his mark once more.

Hopefully, if this is the role that the former Southampton plays more often than not for the Reds, this instant impact can be replicated; a welcome ‘Plan B’ for Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers has adopted a "Spanish philosophy" at Liverpool FC, says Suso.

“I look at him and I see him as similar to a Spanish coach,” Suso said. “All the work we do in training is with the ball. Every time he asks us to do something it’s with the ball. He wants us to play with the ball, never play a long ball and for me that’s really good because that’s my philosophy. When I go away with Spain it’s more or less the same"

“He has done really well since he came here. When he first came he had to change some things and improve the team, which takes a long time, but now we can see all the things he was working with in the past is working now.

“It’s a Spanish philosophy to play; you always want the ball, don’t lose it and give it to the opposition. It’s really good for me and the team.”

Fabio Borini says his ambition throughout this summer’s transfer window was always to remain a Liverpool player.

DUBLIN, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Wednesday, May 14, 2014: Liverpool's Fabio Borini celebrates scoring the second goal against Shamrock Rovers during a postseason friendly match at Lansdowne Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 23-year-old striker was the subject of much speculation regarding his future after returning from a season-long loan spell at Sunderland.

Liverpool accepted a £14 million offer for Borini from the Black Cats in July and a transfer deadline day bid from Queens Parks Rangers earlier this month.

However, Borini explained it was always his intention to remain at Anfield, continue his development as a player and fight for his place in Brendan Rodgers‘ squad.

“The transfer market has been like a storm,” he told gianlucadimarzio.com, with quotes translated by ESPN. “Now that it’s over, I have no problems.

“This summer there has been many rumours. My wish is to play in a top club and Liverpool are a top club so there have never been any real problems. I know my aims and how I can achieve them.

“Staying at Liverpool is one of them. I’m in a big side who try to win each competition. And that is where I want to be.”

Borini was Rodgers’ first signing as Liverpool manager, completing a switch from AS Roma in 2012. Inter Milan were linked with taking him back to his homeland this summer, but Borini insists a return to Italy was never on the cards.

“There was no thought of whether to come back [to Italy] or not,” he added. “Because I grew in England I don’t think of it as to come back home, there isn’t a thought of it.”

Borini appears to be Rodgers’ fourth choice striker, behind Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert, however an injury to Sturridge in England training last week could let Borini back into the matchday squad during his potential absence.

What future does Borini have at Liverpool? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Fabio Borini insists a return to Italy was never on the cards this summer, saying a stay at Liverpool was his main aim.

The Liverpool striker was linked with numerous clubs throughout the window with Premier League rivals Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers both eager to secure the services of the 23-year-old.

However, Borini remained on the books at Liverpool and the one-cap Italy international insists a stay at Anfield was always his preference.

Since joining Chelsea’s youth system from the Bologna academy in 2007, Bentivoglio-born Borini made a season-long return to Italy with a loan spell at Roma before joining Liverpool in 2012.

"There is no thought of whether to come back or not,” he told Gianlucadunarzio.com.

“Because I grew in England I don't think of it as to come back home, there isn't a thought of it.”

Borini spent the 2013-14 season on loan with Sunderland, scoring seven goals in 32 appearances for the Black Cats, who were eager to make his move to the Stadium of Light permanent.

Following the close of the summer transfer window on September 1, Borini admitted it was a turbulent time but claims he is settled at Anfield.

"The transfer market has been like a storm,” he claimed. “Now that it's over, I have no problems.

"Staying at Liverpool is one of them. I'm in a big side who try to win each competition. And that is where I want to be.”

Although Liverpool lost top goalscorer Luis Suarez to Barcelona during the summer, Brendan Rodgers has brought strikers Rickie Lambert and Mario Ballotelli to join England frontman Daniel Sturridge.

Despite the wealth of talent in the Anfield dressing room, Borini believes he still has a role to play for Liverpool.

"I stayed because I think I am able to play here," he added.

“This summer there has been many rumours. My wish is to play in a top club and Liverpool are a top club so there have never been any real problems. I know my aims and how I can achieve them.
