James Milner: Celebrates with Jordan Ibe after scoring Liverpool's opener

James Milner: Celebrates with Jordan Ibe after scoring Liverpool's opener

James Milner and Danny Ings scored in the second-half as Liverpool beat Adelaide United 2-0 in their third pre-season fixture.

England midfielder Milner got onto the end of Jordon Ibe's cross to convert after 67 minutes - from what appeared to be an offside position - before substitute Ings rounded the keeper to double their lead late on.

It was an otherwise patchy display from the Reds, as they recorded their third win in a row after previously beating Thai All-Stars and Brisbane Roar.

Brendan Rodgers made three changes from the side that beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 in their last pre-season encounter, with Dejan Lovren, Joe Allen and Ibe coming in, while Mamadou Sakho, Lucas and Danny Ings dropped out.

A rousing rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off failed to stir the players into a fast start, however, as both teams began in fairly laboured fashion.

Adam Lallana and Ibe were among those attempting to probe early on, with the latter finding himself with the ball at his feet in the box a couple of times but failing to really trouble Eugene Galekovic in the Adelaide goal.

Divock Origi, playing somewhat in the shadow of his Belgian team-mate Christian Benteke who could soon arrive at Anfield, was also guilty of not making more of a couple of first-half opportunities that came his way - firing tamely at the Adelaide keeper with one before failing to turn sharply enough onto another.

Liverpool kept coming forward but there was far too much loose attacking play in the final third to break the deadlock in the first 45 minutes.

Rodgers made just a single change at the interval, with Alberto Moreno replacing Joe Gomez at left-back, but it was down the right where Liverpool looked at their most dangerous, with Nathaniel Clyne and Ibe combining well to threaten the Adelaide defence.

First the former fired a dangerous ball across the face of goal, which no Liverpool player could get on the end of, before Ibe drove at two defenders before firing a shot just wide of the left-hand post.

Liverpool were getting closer, and Lallana brought the first real save out of Galekovic on the hour-mark, stinging the palms of the Aussie keeper with a fierce effort from the edge of the box.

Finally, after 67 minutes had passed, Liverpool finally broke the deadlock through Milner, but there was some controversy about the goal as the England midfielder appeared to be in an offside position when Ibe crossed for him to slide in and convert.

That was to take nothing away from the build-up, though, with Jordan Henderson superbly sliding the ball into the path of youngster Ibe - who was Liverpool's best player on the day - before his perfectly-weighted ball found goalscorer Milner.

A throng of changes from both managers broke up play towards the end, and it was one of those substitutes in the shape of Ings, who made it two with his first goal in a Liverpool shirt.

Clyne drove forward and fed the former Burnley man, who picked it up calmly before taking the ball away from the keeper and converting calmly.

2-0 and job done for Liverpool. Not the best display but Rodgers will still be pleased as his side kept up their winning start to pre-season in front of a packed house at the Adelaide Oval.

Christian Benteke: Set for Liverpool medical on Monday

Christian Benteke: Set for Liverpool medical on Monday

Christian Benteke is to undergo a medical in London on Monday afternoon ahead of his £32.5million move to Liverpool from Aston Villa.

Liverpool agreed a deal to sign the striker from Aston Villa last week after meeting the release stipulated in the Belgian’s contract.

The finer terms of the deal are thought to have been negotiated over the weekend after discussions between Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre and Aston Villa counterpart Tom Fox, with the Reds believed to be paying £16million up front with the rest in instalments.

Liverpool club doctor Andy Massey has flown back to England from the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East and will oversee Benteke’s medical at a facility in London.

Benteke’s medical could run over two days, and provided there are no issues, he is expected to become a Liverpool player in the next 48 hours in a deal which will see him become the club’s second most expensive signing ever.

The 24-year-old will not fly out to link up with Liverpool on tour and is expected to join up with team-mates Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, who return to the club’s Melwood training base on Wednesday after their participation in the Copa America.

Manager Brendan Rodgers will be acquiring a player who has a stunning record against Liverpool with Benteke scoring five times against them in their last six encounters.

Benteke, who has two years remaining on his Villa contract, has scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for the club since he joined from Genk in 2012.

Liverpool have already bought six new players, including England right-back Nathaniel Clyne at a cost of £12.5m, and Benteke's arrival would push their summer spending to around £80m.

Raheem Sterling: Insists he was told to miss Liverpool training

Raheem Sterling: Insists he was told to miss Liverpool training

New Manchester City signing Raheem Sterling insists he was only following medical advice when he missed two days of Liverpool training.

Sterling was widely criticised for missing training, with the majority view being that he was trying to force through a move to Manchester City.

The winger failed to attend two days of Liverpool training, and shortly afterwards a deal was agreed with City to sign the player for £44million, plus £5million of possible add-ons.

However, Sterling says that accusations he was 'pulling a sickie' are wide of the mark. Instead, he claims he had an upset stomach and was advised by medical staff to stay away from the training ground so as not to pass on his bug to other members of Brendan Rodgers' squad.

“Everyone thought I threw a sicknote in," Sterling told the Manchester Evening News. "I was in training on the Tuesday - in the changing room my stomach started hurting. I still went out and trained though.

“That day I went home, and I told the doc I was ill. My stomach was rumbling and I had diarrhoea.

“The doctor just said to me you can't be around the other players. For the next 48 hours, I stayed at home.

“That's what the club doctor told me to do. When that 48 hours was done I came back to training as normal.”

Sterling has yet to make his Manchester City debut but has joined the squad on their preseason tour in Australia.

Asmir Begovic: A better option than Petr Cech, according to David James

Asmir Begovic: A better option than Petr Cech, according to David James

David James feels Arsenal should have signed Asmir Begovic rather than Petr Cech - and cannot understand why Liverpool want Christian Benteke.

Arsenal paid £11million to sign Cech from Chelsea last month, but James believes the Blues have got the better end of the deal having replaced the 33-year-old with a younger and cheaper option in Begovic, who cost £8million from Stoke.

"Petr Cech is a very good goalkeeper but he's not at his best," James told talkSPORT.

"At 33 years of age, there's nothing to say he can't get back to his best form though.

"If he does then Arsenal still have one hell of a goalkeeper but Chelsea still get £11million for a 33-year-old with one year left on his deal.

"They have gone out and bought Asmir Begovic, who was sought after by many big clubs in the last two or three years, and been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

"He's got age on his side and, alongside Thibaut Courtois, you've got two of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League with 15-plus years ahead of them.

"If I was an Arsenal fan I would have been happier to have signed Begovic."

James, meanwhile, is struggling to work out how Benteke will fit into Brendan Rodgers' team at Liverpool as he closes on a £32.5million switch from Aston Villa.

"I'm surprised with Liverpool's interest in Christian Benteke," the former Liverpool and Villa goalkeeper said.

"He had a good run into the end of the season with Aston Villa but I can't understand how he's a Liverpool style player, especially the way Brendan Rodgers likes to play.

"Everybody has a price but £32.5million is a lot of money."
