Wenger and Mourinho: Eyeing European glory

Wenger and Mourinho: Eyeing European glory

With the Champions League group stages are underway, two TEAMtalk writers debate which English side will go furthest in the competition.

In Daily Debate, two TEAMtalk writers give their views on a hot topic and then invite readers to decide who has put forward the best argument.

Which English club will go furthest in the Champions League?

The Premier League's four representatives go into the Champions League with varying pedigrees.

Liverpool return to the competition after a five-year absence; Manchester City have yet to make their mark on the biggest club stage, despite their domestic triumphs; Arsenal are consistently involved but have never won it; while Chelsea are the most recent.

Who will go furthest, though? Pete Hall and Ian Watson have their say...

Pete Hall - Arsenal

The Champions League can either make or break a team's season, as Liverpool so impressively proved last time out.

The Reds excelled without the distraction of Europe's premier competition last season, and in the process, they came the closest they have come to clinching their first top flight title in 24 years.

Chelsea on the other hand faltered at the final hurdle as Manchester City grabbed their second Premier League crown, with the Blues' Champions League semi-final appearance taking much of the wind out of their sales.

This time around, Blues boss Jose Mourinho seems hell-bent on finishing top of the pile domestically, and therefore take precedence over exploits overseas.

A Luis Suarez-less Liverpool certainly don't seem the force they were last season, and will just be content to qualify from a group containing Galacticos of Real Madrid, especially in their first foray amongst Europe's elite in five years.

Manchester City have much to prove on the continent, having still not progressed further than the Round of 16 in their entire history, and with UEFA continuing their seemingly unscrupulous mission to hand City the toughest group stage draw imaginable, Manuel Pellegrini's men will be up against it just to oust German powerhouse Bayern Munich, a vastly improved Roma and Russian giants CSKA Moscow this time around.

However, despite a disappointing start on the banks of the Ruhr, Arsene Wenger can focus on the Champions League, and utilise all Arsenal's attacking ability on the biggest stage of all.

Wenger will surely know that Chelsea and Manchester City will take some stopping domestically, but on the continent, the Gunners' plethora of attacking midfield talent can utilise the extra space afforded to them to their advantage.

With their most difficult group match out of the way, Galatasaray and Anderlecht shouldn't provide stern enough opposition to prevent the Gunners from progressing to the knock-out rounds.

And when the last 16 does come around, with the likes of Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez further integrated into the side, Arsenal can raise a few eyebrows and reach the latter stages of the Champions League purely by channelling all their efforts onto one competition, while the others focus on events much closer to home.

Ian Watson - Chelsea:

Few teams have a better European pedigree over the last three years than Chelsea. Despite that, Mourinho has added to his squad to give a complete look, and there is no reason they cannot better last season's semi-final appearance, and repeat their 2012 triumph.

Relative newcomers Manchester City will certainly improve on their first three campaigns in the competition and will probably go deep into the knockout stages. Liverpool, too, will likely get out of their group, which will represent success to Brendan Rodgers.

Arsenal commenced their 17th consecutive group campaign on Tuesday, which demonstrates admirable consistency, but despite throwing big money at Sanchez and adding Welbeck to his ranks, Wenger once more failed in the transfer window to address the need for another centre-half and holding midfielder.

Again, they will probably emerge unscathed from Group D, but the Gunners are still not in a position to greatly concern the likes Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich, especially given the threadbare nature of his defensive ranks and the domestic challenges they face.

Chelsea, on the other hand, certainly are. Unlike Wenger, Mourinho used the summer to address his squad's deficiencies; primarily their lack of a top-class striker.

Mourinho brought in Diego Costa and supplemented that purchase with the recruitment of Loic Remy and re-hiring of Didier Drogba. Costa has wasted no time in settling in at Stamford Bridge, similarly to Cesc Fabregas. The Spanish pair, along with Nemanja Matic, add strength, discipline, creativity and goals to a squad which reached the last four last season and should have won the Premier League.

They'll certainly go further than Arsenal, Pete...

It wasn’t pretty, but Liverpool returned to the Champions League after a five year hiatus with a customary dramatic victory over Ludogorets on Tuesday night. Here we round up Wednesday’s back pages.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 16, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the second goal after his injury time penalty sealed a 2-1 victory over PFC Ludogorets Razgrad during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Perhaps in fact it was simply fitting that an injury-time Steven Gerrard penalty would give Liverpool their first three points in UEFA’s elite competition this season. Until then the game certainly hadn’t lived up to the hype.

The pre-match entertainment was provided by the fans, pouring into the ground early to unfurl huge banners, flags and scarves, whilst the five European Cups mosaic on the Kop was particularly spectacular.

Tim Rich of the Independent described the scene:

The Champions League is football’s grand theatre and Anfield is its Old Vic. As the Tannoys played the Champions League theme, a sound that Steven Gerrard said he craved to hear, the Kop held up cards depicting the club’s five European Cups.

Like Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, Anfield is a stadium of banners as their return to the European elite was marked by a vast, traditional one, the kind that could have been unfurled against St Etienne in 1977 that said bluntly: “We are Liverpool”.

Ludogorets will leave Anfield disappointed, having put on a performance that deserved so much more from the game, whilst the Reds may feel fortunate to have stolen the rewards right at the death, as Paul Wilson of The Guardian explains:

Relief, more than anything, was detectable when the dust settled on a frantic last few minutes. The Bulgarian champions had proved capable and clever opponents and Liverpool were making such heavy weather of breaking them down that the visit of Real Madrid next month could only be imagined with dread.

Jonathan Liew of The Telegraph believed Dejan Lovren was Liverpool’s best starting player, but also had mixed praise for Mario Balotelli after the Italian international scored his first goal for the club in the 82nd minute:

[On Lovren] Safe enough. Not significantly tested either in the air or on the ground by Ludogorets’s lone striker Bezjak. Had one header at goal, which went over the bar.

[On Balotelli] Needless fouls, an unusually heavy first touch, and the work rate of a fever victim. And then he goes and scores a crucial goal. Just another night at the office.

Finally, there was a more sobering conclusion from the Daily Mirror ‘s Oliver Holt:

There is so much to live up to after last season and so far Liverpool are struggling to reproduce the intensity and the quality that took them to such heights a few months ago.

Relief and expectations — How the newspapers reacted to Liverpool 2-1 Ludogorets

Mario Balotelli: Settled nerves at Anfield with goal

Mario Balotelli: Settled nerves at Anfield with goal

After setting Liverpool on their way to victory over Ludogorets, Pete Fraser looks at Mario Balotelli's role and invites you to have your say.

It was an edgy evening for Liverpool after five years away from the European Cup and it took injury-time drama for minnows Ludogorets to be beaten on Merseyside.

Most of Anfield, and probably manager Brendan Rodgers, too, had probably anticipated an easier evening against their underdog opposition - regardless of an adapting, inexperienced, new-look squad. So why was it such a nervy night?

Mario Balotelli, the player with the third-highest number of UEFA Champions League appearances in Liverpool's squad, scored his first goal since his £16million arrival from AC Milan but Steven Gerrard's injury-time penalty was later required to squeeze out Dani Abalo's equaliser.

Were you impressed by Balotelli. Did the Italian drop too deep? Was the former Manchester City striker brilliant or baffling? We used Opta data to monitor his performance, plus you can have your say below...

3RD MINUTE

As Liverpool make a fast-paced start, unlike their defeat by Aston Villa, Balotelli darts down the inside left channel and holds the ball up intelligently against Ludogorets defenders before winning a free-kick. Thirty seconds later, he picks up the ball deep, which will remain a trend for the match, and carries it into Ludogorets territory. But Adam Lallana is then offside.

16TH MINUTE

With his back to goal, Balotelli, again dropping deep, delicately lays the ball off to Philippe Coutinho with his first touch before spinning and sprinting into the box. However, Alberto Moreno over hits the cross. The lay-off is just Balotelli's seventh touch of the game, with only Raheem Sterling (six) and Simon Mignolet (five) seeing less of the ball for the home team. Balotelli has won one of his three duels.

21ST MINUTE

Balotelli turns Ludogorets centre-back Cosmin Moti and darts into the penalty area but his shot, the first by any player in the game, is blocked by Alex Aleksandrov before Sterling is offside at the rebound. Balotelli has had nine touches and won 50 per cent of his four duels. At the same time, the Italian has played three successful passes. In the 23rd minute, Balotelli produces some good defensive work in his own half, taking the ball from Roman Bezjak before winning a foul.

34TH MINUTE

After collecting a pass from Coutinho, Balotelli carries the ball to the left of the Ludogorets penalty area before cutting back onto his right foot. He shoots from the edge of the area but Milan Borjan, Ludogorets' third-choice goalkeeper, saves the skidding shot. In the 31st minute, Balotelli had received a word from referee Matej Jug for fouling Svetoslav Dyakov.

HALF-TIME

Balotelli touches the ball 22 times in the first half. He has 13 duels, a total only matched by team-mate Javier Manquillo, but wins only 46.2% (see below graphic). Liverpool's No.45 also commits four fouls, more than any other player on the pitch. His tendency to drop deep also means he has only two shots, neither of which are on target.

Balotelli wins (red) five & loses eight (yellow) of his 13 first-half duels (left) while he spent little time in the 18-yard box (right) against Ludogorets

55TH MINUTE

Ten minutes into the second half, Balotelli attempts a pass with the outside of his right foot into the Ludogorets penalty area. But the visitors intercept and break only for Virgil Misidjan to run the ball out of play. That pass brings Balotelli's passing accuracy down to 85.5% from 16 attempts.

70TH MINUTE

Balotelli passes possession out wide and, contrary to the majority of attacks in the first half, does not stay deep and sprints into the area to try and meet Manquillo's cross. Substitute Fabio Borini's header has to be saved by Borjan. Sixty seconds later, Balotelli controls the ball on the edge of the six-yard area but scuffs his left-footed volley. The introduction of Borini and Lucas Leiva seems to have helped Balotelli as Liverpool have moved to their diamond formation. He will end the second half with five attempted shots compared to the two in the first half.

82ND MINUTE

Much to the relief of the Anfield crowd, Balotelli opens his Liverpool account with his first goal since signing from Moreno's assist, finishing skilfully in the air as the ball pings between defenders. It puts Liverpool ahead at 1-0 and is Balotelli's first goal in seven club appearances combined for both Liverpool and Milan. As Liverpool go on to dramatically win 2-1, Balotelli finishes the game having had seven shots, with two - including his goal - on target and three blocked. Balotelli has 52 touches and wins 55% of his 20 duels. His total of four fouls remains the most by any player in the match.

PAUL MERSON'S VERDICT...

"He [Balotelli] gets lucky [for the goal]. He showed a lot of strength and it bounced to him. Nice touch and a great finish with the outside of the foot. That is what he is brought for. He is a good finisher. He is not going to run the channels, he is not going to run across the box, but if you put it into his feet, he will make things happen. They [Liverpool] dodged a bullet tonight. If you are not beating them [Ludogorets] at home, you are not qualifying."

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start, with Steven Gerrard‘s late, late penalty earning the Reds all three points. Dani Abalo’s last-gasp strike had seemingly earned Ludogorets a draw, in what was an incredible end to proceedings.

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Group B - Liverpool FC v PFC Ludogorets Razgrad

Liverpool 2-1 Ludogorets

Champions League / Anfield / Tuesday, 16th September 2014

Goals: Balotelli (82), Gerrard (90); Abalo (90)

By Henry Jackson

Champions League football returned to Anfield for the first time in five years, and a typically atmospheric home crowd made it an occasion to remember. The Reds were officially back where they belong, as their search for a sixth European Cup triumph got underway.

Brendan Rodgers made just one change from the side that lost disappointingly to Aston Villa on Saturday, with Raheem Sterling coming in for Lazar Markovic. The 20-year-old Serbian star was suspended, having picked up a red card in last season’s Europa League semi-final for Benfica against Juventus.

The game got off to a frenetic start, with Ludogorets showing that they were perfectly capable of springing a surprise. Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges, however, with the Reds’ passing perhaps a little lacking in tempo and a few early nerves clearly having an effect on some.

After 21 minutes Liverpool almost opened the scoring. Mario Balotelli’s shot was blocked, following a terrific turn, and Adam Lallana’s deflected effort was kept out by Milan Borjan.

Dejan Lovren was slightly fortunate not to concede a penalty at the other end, as the hosts continued to show they were not remotely overawed by the occasion. Balotelli tested Borjan with a tame effort, while the lively Alberto Moreno fired over.

Shortly before the break Lallana was twice denied by Ludogorets defenders, after good work from Jordan Henderson, and from the resulting corner Lovren header over.

The two sides went into the break deadlocked, in what was a tense, intriguing battle.

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Group B - Liverpool FC v PFC Ludogorets Razgrad

There were no changes from either team at the interval, as a potentially pivotal second-half commenced. Coutinho and Henderson both had early long-range efforts on goal, but neither troubled Borjan.

Javier Manquillo then wasted a wonderful opportunity to make it 1-0, but he volleyed into the Kop having been found expertly by Henderson.

The Reds took control of the game, with Sterling growing more and more prominent by the minute. There was a definite lack of sharpness about Lallana and Balotelli though; perhaps understandable given their lack of football since the World Cup.

It was still 0-0 at the hour mark, and Anfield was growing increasingly restless. Ludogorets looked a threat on the break, and had a couple of decent strikes off target.

Midway through the half Lucas and Fabio Borini came on for Coutinho and Lallana, respectively, with Liverpool changing their shape to a 4-4-2 diamond. The latter almost opened the scoring immediately, but his header was tipped over by Borjan.

Roman Bezjak then had a wonderful chance to stun the hosts, but his side-footed effort came back off the post. The match was on a knife-edge with 15 minutes remaining.

With eight minutes remaining, that elusive goal finally came. Balotelli, who had struggled throughout, finished sublimely from close-range to give his side a vital lead and truly announce himself as a Liverpool player.

An unbelievable finale to the game saw Dani Abalo make it 1-1 in stoppage time, rounding Simon Mignolet and tapping into an empty net, before Manquillo won a penalty even later in time added on. Steven Gerrard nervelessly dispatched the spot-kick to earn Liverpool a massive win.

It was a truly breathless end to a nervy evening.

Man of the Match: Jordan Henderson

Tactical Overview

Despite rumours of Rodgers opting for his favoured 4-4-2 diamond formation, he went with a 4-3-3 slightly different to the one that failed to ignite against Villa at the weekend.

Coutinho dropped deeper alongside Gerrard and Henderson, with Lallana and Sterling occupying the wide roles in support of Balotelli. The switch to the diamond in the second-half improved the Reds’ performance, and should be their first-choice system in general.

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Group B - Liverpool FC v PFC Ludogorets Razgrad

Liverpool:Mignolet, Manquillo, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho (Lucas 67), Sterling, Lallana (Borini 67), Balotelli.

Subs not used: Jones, Enrique, Toure, Suso, Lambert

Ludogorets starting XI:Borjan, Caicara, Moti, Alexandrov, Minev, Dyakov, Anicet, M.Alexandrov, Marcelinho, Misidjan, Bezjak

Steven Gerrard slots home the winner for Liverpool from the spot

Steven Gerrard slots home the winner for Liverpool from the spot

Steven Gerrard's last-gasp penalty earned Liverpool a fortunate 2-1 win over brave Ludogorets as they marked their return to the UEFA Champions League with a victory.

Ludogorets looked set to spoil Liverpool's return to Europe's premier competition when substitute Dani Abalo scored in the final minute to cancel out Mario Balotelli's 82nd minute opener.

However, there was still time left for Liverpool to win a penalty when Javi Manquillo was brought down in the box by Ludogorets goalkeeper Milan Borjan and Gerrard stepped up to convert the spot-kick and get Liverpool off to a winning start.

Liverpool were expected to make a fast start to the game, but in a low-key opening, despite dominating the ball, the hosts had no cutting edge in the final third.

It took until 20 minutes for Liverpool to create their first opening when Balotelli spun his man on the edge of the box, fired in a shot which was blocked and the ball fell to Adam Lallana who saw his effort pushed out by Ludogorets goalkeeper Borjan.

Liverpool had a lucky escape just before the half hour as Dejan Lovren was fortunate not to concede a penalty when Marcelinho burst into the box and the defender appeared to shove the striker off the ball.

The home side created their best chance of the opening half seven minutes before the break when Henderson burst into the box and picked out Lallana, but the summer signing from Southampton got the ball stuck under his feet allowing the Ludogorets defence to regroup and block his shot.

Liverpool continued to huff and puff early in the second half, but Manquillo wasted a great chance to score on 53 minutes when the ball dropped to him in front of goal, but the defender blazed his shot over the top.

Brendan Rodgers made a double change midway through the second half with Lucas and Fabio Borini coming on for Philippe Coutinho and Lallana, and Borini went close to scoring when he got on the end of Manquillo's inviting cross, but Borjan produced a fine save to tip the Italian's header over the top.

Ludogorets were inches away from breaking the deadlock on 72 minutes when Marcelinho slipped in Roman Bezjak on goal and he was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post with Simon Mignolet beaten.

Liverpool finally made the breakthrough 10 minutes later as Balotelli juggled a cross from Moreno inside the box and smashed home a half-volley into the bottom corner to break his duck for his new club.

However, Ludogorets refused to lie down and drew level in the 90th minute when substitute Hamza found Dani inside the box and he rounded Mignolet to slot the ball into the empty net.

It looked like Liverpool would be forced to settle for a draw, but they were handed a lifeline four minutes into stoppage time when Manquillo was felled in the box by Borjan and Gerrard showed nerves of steel to score from the spot.
