Klaas Jan Huntelaar menjadi target utama Brendan Rodgers untuk menggantikan Luis Suarez yang semakin hampir berhijrah ke Barcelona. Namun, Huntelaar mahu berbincang dgn kelab beliau terlebih dahulu sebelum melakukan apa2 tindakan.

"Regarding the rumours about Liverpool it would only be fair to speak to Schalke first," he told De Telegraaf.

“I&039;ve talked with Schalke about an extension for a while. After the World Cup I am having a holiday. Then I will speak to them again.

“With my agent, I now do not talk about the interest from clubs. I focus on the tournament.”

With players returning to training the first pre-season friendly less than a fortnight away, Jack Lusby looks at why this is a crucial period for Lucas Leiva.

As Brendan Rodgers and his Reds head into pre-season, this offers a chance, initially at least, for Liverpool’s non-World Cup players to prove to their manager that they’re worth the inclusion in the coming season.

One such player is Brazilian defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva, who was left out of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad this summer.

For the early stages of pre-season at least, players who are also deployed in Lucas’ position, such as England’s Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, will be given an extended leave of absence.

This leaves the 27-year-old with the perfect chance to impress his manager, and Lucas needs to grab this opportunity with both hands or face further first-team exile.

Squad Status

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva in action against Queens Park Rangers during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Lucas is a hugely interesting figure amongst the Liverpool first team; a player who has moved from pariah, to hero, to forgotten man.

Signed by Rafa Benitez as a more advanced midfielder, Lucas was soon adapted to plump the depths of defensive midfield, and responded remarkably.

The Brazilian became an important figure and for a while one of the league’s leading ball winners; what’s more, Lucas is by all accounts a hugely popular dressing room personality.

Unfortunately a series of serious injuries have hampered the progress of the 27-year-old, and in the past season this has been hindered by the impressive development of Gerrard in the deep-lying role.

These injuries left Lucas out of Scolari’s World Cup squad, with Spurs midfielder Paulinho, Wolfsburg stopper Luis Gustavo and Manchester City’s Fernandinho all preferred.

The midfielder returned at the latter stages of Liverpool’s ultimately unsuccessful title challenge but was more often than not a mere squad player.

More often than not this came in the form of a now unfamiliar, advanced midfield role to accommodate for the absences of players such as Henderson and Joe Allen – and in this role, sadly, Lucas did little to impress.

Staring into the void, with Gerrard solid in his deep-lying role and Henderson, Allen, and Lucas’ compatriot Coutinho flourishing in the more advanced midfield roles, Lucas will need this pre-season to prove his enduring worth to Rodgers.

Pre-season for Lucas

In the middle of May, The Telegraph (and others) reported that a dozen of Liverpool’s fringe players were available for transfer this summer; one of these mentioned was Lucas.

It is likely that this notion will continue under Rodgers throughout the summer, and these reports suggest “The popular Brazilian would undoubtedly be retained as a squad player if he wished, but he is at a point in his career where he wants to be a permanent starter.”

Italian clubs such as Napoli and Inter Milan have been rumoured to be interested but no concrete bid has yet surfaced.

Up for sale but with his future, apparently, in his hands, Lucas would need to utilise this pre-season build-up to secure a position as a regular in Rodgers’ squad.

An unwelcome mission, perhaps, given the Brazilian’s lowly status in the first-team squad.

Liverpool play—at this juncture, at least seven friendly fixtures this pre-season, including a four-game tour of America encompassing a money-spinning “International Champions Cup”.

Seven opportunities for Lucas to impress.

Gerrard will return at some point during this jaunt and, as club captain, talisman and still one of the squad’s most important players, will undoubtedly resume his role at the heart of the midfield and between the centre-backs.

Between now and then, Lucas will need to make himself genuinely indispensable to Rodgers, although this is hampered even further by the arrival of next year’s model.

Emre Can

Signed from German side Bayer Leverkusen this summer, Emre Can is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder and a new, direct rival for Lucas’ position.

What this statistical comparison shows, to some extent, is that whilst in some regions Lucas is the better option than his 20-year-old adversary, Can stands head and shoulders above the Brazilian in all-round play.

Rodgers will be expecting players in all positions within his fluid attacking system to contribute going forward, and in this area Lucas becomes somewhat of a passenger.

For example, according to WhoScored, in the past five Premier League seasons for the Reds, Lucas has scored no goals and made just four assists. This is in 133 appearances.

Comparatively, Can scored three and made another three in just 29 Bundesliga outings last term.

Clearly, these are two very different players, but Can now represents more the type of option which Rodgers prefers in midfield.

The German should be joining the squad for pre-season, and as such this provides Liverpool’s manager with a direct comparison between the two with players such as Gerrard absent.

Tasked with developing his game and keeping up with a newer model, this is the exact reason why Lucas needs to impress significantly this pre-season.

JAKARTA, INDONESIA - Thursday, July 18, 2013: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva and captain Steven Gerrard during a training session at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta ahead of their first match of the Preseason Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

To conclude, this pre-season should represent a make or break situation for Lucas Leiva; a veritable outcast in Brendan Rodgers’ first-team thinking, a succession of seriously strong displays against sides such as Milan and Borussia Dortmund could sway this.

There is a big ‘if’ here though, as players such as Steven Gerrard and new arrival Emre Can will likely be further up the pecking order when it comes to a deep-lying defensive midfield role.

Both more capable of fulfilling attacking duties, these players are more likely to appeal to Rodgers’ particular system.

It’ll be a tough ask, but the Brazilian has managed it before — a hugely impressive pre-season for Lucas is a must.

Does Lucas Leiva have what it takes to secure his Liverpool future this pre-season? Let us know in the comments below.

Siapa Emre Can?

- Cara permainannya keras, mungkin persis Sakho (di Perancis), walau ada ketika gelabah bila berdepan &039;one by one&039;, no wonder la umo muda, lagi2 kalau &039;one by one&039; berdepan pemain berpengalaman

- Disebabkan Can tidak mahu bakatnya lama terperam, al-maklum sajalah kalau dah join Bayern, umur pula 17 tahun ketika itu, Can tentu saja sering memanaskan bangku simpanan, sedangkan Bayern memandang Can sebagai prospek masa depan kelab

- Can akhirnya minta dilepaskan dan beliau menyertai Bayern Leverkusen pada musim lalu (2013/14)

- Untuk pentas antarabangsa, Can masih belum mendapat debut buat skuad &039;The Team&039; walaupun telah menyertai semua skuad remaja Jerman iaitu U-16, 17, 19 & 20.

- Mana tahu kalau FA mahu pancing Can sertai Three Lions..sapa tahu..kihkih..

Luis Suarez‘s move from Liverpool to Barcelona looks set to be a cash-only deal, despite both clubs keen to have Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez as part of the deal.

Spanish journalists claimed on Thursday night that a €90 million (£71.4 million) deal for Suarez had been agreed between the Reds and the Catalan giants.

Liverpool had hoped to secure the services of Sanchez, who scored 19 goals in La Liga last season, as Suarez’s direct replacement, plus cash, but Sanchez is keen on a move to Arsenal, according to The Telegraph .

Jeremy Wilson and Chris Bascombe report in Friday’s edition:

Arsenal are understood to have a deal agreed in principle with Sánchez. Although Barcelona are eager for him to move to Liverpool to speed up the Suárez negotiations, there is no guarantee Sánchez will agree to such a switch as he considers his options.

Sánchez could be trying to play Liverpool and Arsenal off against one another but, as of Thursday night, the sense in Spain was still that he favours a move to London.

Barcelona’s sale of Sanchez to Arsenal may well be the key to finalising their move for Suarez, raising some of the £71 million being reported.

Sky Sports reported on Friday morning that Suarez’s switch to the Camp Nou could even be completed by the end of the weekend.

Suarez is currently banned from world football for the best part of four months after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s World Cup group stage defeat of Italy last Tuesday.

Although Fifa initially said the ban extended to all aspects of football, they have now partially backtracked, allowing him to train during the suspension.

After completing the signings of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can early in the summer transfer window, Liverpool may be looking for a swift resolution in regards to Suarez in order to prepare for the forthcoming 2014/15 season.

Luis Suarez: Liverpool striker looks set for Barcelona

Luis Suarez: Liverpool striker looks set for Barcelona

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is a brilliant talent but adapting to the unique charms of the Barcelona way is no easy task, writes Adam Bate.

The name is already in Catalan record books. Barcelona's original Luis Suarez became the world's most expensive player when sold to Inter in 1961. A quirk. An omen.

Furthermore, it's said Liverpool's Luis Suarez - apparently on the brink of a move to Barcelona - was compelled to first come to Europe in order to be closer to now wife Sofia when she moved to the city as a student.

But even those seemingly made for life at the club can struggle to fit in. The exit of Cesc Fabregas this summer, ostensibly in his pomp, highlights the point.

Schooled in the ways of La Masia and open about his passion for the club, it was unthinkable upon his return to Barcelona that Fabregas should leave without a Champions League winners' medal, let alone just three short years later.

Instead the prodigal son soon discovered that this Barcelona team has a very specific way of conducting the on-field orchestra.

It's a method that will rightfully take its place in history. Whatever the current trend regarding the merits of tiki-taka football, at its best, with all elements in synchronicity, there was simply no riposte. The 2010/11 Barcelona vintage was something else entirely.

Of course, the first thing that caught the eye was the miraculous Lionel Messi. Then there was Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta with their measured passing.

When accompanied by the metronomic Sergio Busquets, it was death by a thousand cuts for any opponent. And yet, this was to merely scratch the surface of its greatness.

Delve deeper and it was the relentless pressing that harried opponents into near immediate surrender of the ball. Look further still and the realisation came that the runs of Samuel Eto'o - and later Pedro - would stretch defences, creating a fraction of space that was more than Messi needed.

Together it clicked. Sublime synergy. Individually, the best; collectively even better.

Barcelona had created something near to perfection. Ironically, the flaw with a perfect machine is that when it comes to replacing the cogs, logic dictates that the result can mean only one thing - diminished output. The strength became a weakness. New signings could not be assimilated.

It's tempting to conclude that if Fabregas was unable to make a smooth transition then nobody can. But his mere presence in midfield - pushing Iniesta wide - solved a problem that didn't exist.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was supposed to add a missing ingredient but was often left on the shelf when the midfield cooked up an attack. Even the brilliant Alexis Sanchez is to be discarded.

That all the aforementioned stars boast such fine records at the club as individuals only emphasises the confusion.

Fabregas ranked among the top three in La Liga for assists during his time in Spain. Sanchez's tally of 21 goals last term is the same total Ibrahimovic managed in his only season with the club. But the numbers did not add up to success. Something else was lost.

Much in the way Claude Makelele's exit came to symbolise the demise of Real Madrid's Galacticos project, it was the presence of less celebrated figures such as Pedro that brought balance at Barca. The runners attuned to Messi's passes who made sense of the labour distribution.

Without them, Camp Nou resembles a clique unwilling or unable to accommodate newcomers.

As a result, even the signing of Neymar - a deal so problematic off the field - has gone little smoother on it.

Brazil's main event but Barcelona's warm-up act, there has been a sense so far in which Neymar in Catalonia has looked like a brilliant player nevertheless playing a different game to those around him; every star turn in Brazilian yellow only making the situation more awkward.

On the face of it, a forward line of Neymar, Messi and Suarez ought to be devastating. Fantasy football for the Football Manager generation. But it evokes memories alarmingly reminiscent of those Galacticos. The narrative is changing again.

As Sid Lowe told Sky Sports: "Once upon a time it was Real Madrid developing their youth players and Barcelona spending millions on players."

The challenge is to make this spending spree work. With Xavi set for the Gulf, perhaps the cabal is breaking up.

New coach Luis Enrique is a Barca man and a former team-mate of Pep Guardiola, but with recent experience in Italy, change is a possibility with tenacity and hard work among the watch words. It is Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic who will be making the play now.

It's a period of transition but Suarez would be expected to make sense of it fast and reinterpret his role even faster.

Of course, he's good enough to do it, with over 100 goals for Ajax ideal preparation for a club so steeped in the Dutch tradition. The evidence of his time in both Amsterdam and Liverpool indicates that his goal return only increases as understandings grow.

Part of the reason for that is the fact that it soon became apparent he was the key figure in those teams. Steven Gerrard regarded Suarez "by a big distance as the best player I have played with" while Joe Allen wasn't afraid to use words like "hero" and "idol" in reference to a team-mate who "takes the burden off a lot of the players".

At Barca, that burden will remain with Messi, and dovetailing with the No.10 would be the challenge for any new arrival.

Fortunately for Suarez, signing at a time when the Argentinian will be looking to forge new partnerships might offer the chance to be at the heart of a team going in a new direction.

The challenge for Barcelona is to ensure it remains more than a club and not less than the sum of its parts.

Fitting in at Barca a challenge for Suarez

Eight teams will become four at the World Cup this weekend and with Mamadou Sakho and Simon Mignolet Liverpool’s only participants left in the tournament, we preview this weekend’s quarter-finals.

Both Sakho (hamstring) and Mignolet (substitute) are unlikely to play for France and Belgium respectively.

The French take on Germany in Friday evening’s first game (5pm UK kick-off) and we’ve previewed both that clash and Brazil v Colombia (9pm UK kick-off) here.

Mignolet will be watching on from the subs bench as Thibaut Courtois continues in goal for Belgium as they take on Argentina on Saturday evening (5pm UK kick-off).

Belgium have had a wonderfully strange tournament so far, not really impressing or showing much flair, but winning every game and only conceding twice.

Argentina’s story is similar. Their second round victory over Switzerland was a long, drawn out affair, with Angel di Maria scoring the winner deep into extra-time.

We’re expecting Argentina and Belgium to make hard work of their quarter-final clash too, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be goals.

  • Lionel Messi to score anytime (within 90 minutes) against Belgium is 1.90

The last quarter-final of the weekend sees Holland take on Costa Rica in Salvador on Saturday night (9pm UK kick-off).

Former Liverpool favourite Dirk Kuyt has been impressing on the left side for the Dutch and will most likely continue in that starting berth.

Costa Rica of course are the tournament’s surprise party, upsetting Uruguay, Italy and England to top Group D and defeating Greece on penalties in the second round.

However, Holland’s might and attacking three may mean it’s the end of the road for the Central Americans.

  • Holland to beat Costa Rica and over 2.5 combined goals scored in the game 2.55

Our tips

So to recap, our tips for the quarter-finals of the World Cup:

  • Lionel Messi to score anytime (within 90 minutes) against Belgium is 1.90

  • Holland to beat Costa Rica and over 2.5 combined goals scored in the game 2.55

With the 2014/15 season already looming, Jack Lusby selects his 10 youngsters who can impress for Liverpool this pre-season.

Pre-season is, naturally, an opportunity for managers and players alike to formulate their plans for the upcoming season—for managers this includes pruning and adding to the squad, and players staking their claim for said inclusion.

For Liverpool, pre-season friendlies in July and early August—both home and away—offers a plethora of younger players the opportunity to impress manager Brendan Rodgers.

Players who have featured at the World Cup will be afforded more of a break, missing friendlies against Brondby and Preston North End, along with the beginning of the Reds’ tour of the USA.

This leaves Rodgers with a squad of kids in America, and here are 10 Liverpool youngsters who can impress this pre-season.

Ryan McLaughlin

ST HELENS, ENGLAND - Monday, October 7, 2013: Liverpool's Ryan McLaughlin in action against Tottenham Hotspur's Ryan Fredericks during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Langtree Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Nine appearances on loan at Championship side Barnsley saw McLaughlin his first competitive league experience, and the Northern Irish full-back could look to take this into Liverpool’s pre-season fixtures.

Doubts over the long-term future of Glen Johnson at Liverpool persist given his abysmal form, and this pre-season could see McLaughlin given the chance.

Likely to vie with more established players such as Jon Flanagan throughout pre-season, McLaughlin has his work cut out for him, but a solid pre-season may force the 19-year-old into Rodgers’ thinking.

Brad Smith

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 29, 2013: Liverpool's Brad Smith in action against Chelsea during the Premiership match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Australian-born left-back Smith made his Liverpool debut in perhaps the most ill-advised of fashions.

With the Reds trailing 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in December, Rodgers introduced the then 19-year-old to Premier League football amid the harshest of atmospheres.

Incredibly pacey with a predilection for making forward runs, Smith impressed in the post-season friendly win over Shamrock Rovers in May, particularly within his link-up play with fellow Academy hotshot Jordon Ibe.

Targets including Alberto Moreno would surely oust the Englishman for any first-team capacity for 2014/15 if they were to join, but this pre-season is the time for Smith to impress his manager.

Andre Wisdom

PRESTON, ENGLAND - Saturday, July 13, 2013: Liverpool's Andre Wisdom in action against Preston North End during a preseason friendly match at Deepdale. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

An impressive loan spell at Derby County last season saw Wisdom unwittingly usurped as flavour of the month on Merseyside due to the full-back exploits of Flanagan, but returning full of confidence pre-season should see the solid defender keen to prove himself.

The 21-year-old helped the Rams keep 12 clean sheets in 37 Championship appearances throughout 2013/14, with the side unfortunately falling at the last hurdle in terms of promotion.

Whilst the defender operated as right-back last season, many believe that Wisdom’s long-term future lies at the heart of the defence, at centre back – a position he played last pre-season against Preston.

This pre-season Wisdom may be given the chance to impress in that role.

Jordan Rossiter

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 29, 2013: Liverpool's Jordan Rossiter warms-up before the Premiership match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Flirting with the Reds’ first team at times throughout 2013/14, young midfielder Rossiter signed his first professional contract with Liverpool on reaching his 17th birthday in May.

Speaking at the time, U21s boss Alex Inglethorpe was full of praise for the teenager, saying “He’s getting better all the time.”

Compared to a young Steven Gerrard, Rossiter is clearly in the thoughts of Rodgers for the future, and this pre-season may see the midfielder given the chance to impress at a higher stage.

Jack Dunn

DUBLIN, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Wednesday, May 14, 2014: Liverpool's Jack Dunn in action against Shamrock Rovers during a postseason friendly match at Lansdowne Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

U21s top scorer Dunn introduced himself to the Reds faithful in style, notching shortly after being introduced in Liverpool’s friendly win over Shamrock Rovers.

With one goal in one senior outing so far to his name, Dunn can surely look forward to more of an involvement under Rodgers in the near future.

Likely brimming with confidence, perhaps this pre-season is Dunn’s time to shine.

Cameron Brannagan

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, September 23, 2013: Liverpool's Cameron Brannagan in action against Manchester City during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Ewen Fields. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

18-year-old midfielder Brannagan was linked by The Independent with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona this summer, perhaps a clear testimony to the quality of this youngster.

“Brannagan [is] a midfielder with the potential to be a top player, owing to his balance, vision and his ability with both feet,” they explained.

Included on the bench for Liverpool’s 2-0 FA Cup Third Round victory over Oldham in January, Brannagan is knocking on the door when it comes to first-team opportunities.

If included this pre-season, the midfielder will surely be looking to stake his claim under Rodgers.

Joao Carlos Teixeira

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 20, 2013: Liverpool's Joao Carlos Teixeira in action against West Bromwich Albion during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

21-year-old Portuguese midfielder Teixeira made a surprise substitute’s appearance in Liverpool’s season-defining 3-2 victory over Fulham in February.

A calm influence, seemingly completely unaffected by the occasion, Teixeira helped the Reds secure the penalty which led to their victory.

Pre-season will give the midfielder an opportunity to stake a claim for first-team involvement throughout 2014/15, particularly given the absence of players such as Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson for periods.

Jordon Ibe

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, August 27, 2013: Liverpool's Jordon Ibe in action against Notts County during the Football League Cup 2nd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Ibe represents Liverpool’s most singularly talented youth prospect yet to break through into the first team proper, and many believe 2014/15 will be his year.

Impressive cameo appearances here and there–punctuated by an enduring presence for Inglethorpe’s U21s—culminated in a star show against Shamrock Rovers in May.

A pacey, skilful winger with great strength and a robust engine, Ibe should be ready to impress much like fellow Academy product Sterling, and this pre-season should be just the start.

Suso

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's 'Suso' Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Saenz De La Torre in action against Queens Park Rangers during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Despite being considered one of the Reds’ star youngsters in recent years, Spanish midfielder Suso is at somewhat of a crossroads, with much speculation surrounding a move away from Merseyside.

Therefore, if the former Almeria loanee wishes to make a lasting imprint in the thoughts of Rodgers for next season, this build-up should be the right opportunity.

A hugely talented playmaker, the 20-year-old scored three and made a further seven in 33 La Liga appearances last season, proving his top flight credentials.

Pre-season with Liverpool may be make or break for Suso.

Fabio Borini

DUBLIN, REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Wednesday, May 14, 2014: Liverpool's Fabio Borini celebrates scoring the second goal against Shamrock Rovers during a postseason friendly match at Lansdowne Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The oldest player in this list, Italian striker Borini warrants his inclusion due to his precarious situation at the club—much like that of Suso.

However, the striker has shown his determination to contribute for the Reds next season in bizarre fashion.

No one can question the Italian’s commitment to the cause, and an impressive pre-season could see Borini re-enter the first-team fold under Rodgers.

Which of these players would you most like to see this pre-season? Let us know in the comments below.

Jack Dunn

U21s top scorer Dunn introduced himself to the Reds faithful in style, notching shortly after being introduced in Liverpool’s friendly win over Shamrock Rovers.

With one goal in one senior outing so far to his name, Dunn can surely look forward to more of an involvement under Rodgers in the near future.

Likely brimming with confidence, perhaps this pre-season is Dunn’s time to shine.

Cameron Brannagan

21-year-old Portuguese midfielder Teixeira made a surprise substitute’s appearance in Liverpool’s season-defining 3-2 victory over Fulham in February.

A calm influence, seemingly completely unaffected by the occasion, Teixeira helped the Reds secure the penalty which led to their victory.

Pre-season will give the midfielder an opportunity to stake a claim for first-team involvement throughout 2014/15, particularly given the absence of players such as Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson for periods.

Jordon Ibe

Ibe represents Liverpool’s most singularly talented youth prospect yet to break through into the first team proper, and many believe 2014/15 will be his year.

Impressive cameo appearances here and there–punctuated by an enduring presence for Inglethorpe’s U21s—culminated in a star show against Shamrock Rovers in May.

A pacey, skilful winger with great strength and a robust engine, Ibe should be ready to impress much like fellow Academy product Sterling, and this pre-season should be just the start.

Suso

The oldest player in this list, Italian striker Borini warrants his inclusion due to his precarious situation at the club—much like that of Suso.

However, the striker has shown his determination to contribute for the Reds next season in bizarre fashion.

No one can question the Italian’s commitment to the cause, and an impressive pre-season could see Borini re-enter the first-team fold under Rodgers.

Which of these players would you most like to see this pre-season? Let us know in the comments below.
