Liverpool close the first half of their campaign on Monday when they welcome Swansea to Anfield.

A win would see them draw level on points with the visitors, although the Welsh side possess a superior goal difference.

As they bid to close the gap on the Champions League places, manager Brendan Rodgers hopes an improved second half of the season can see them fulfil their pre-season ambitions.

Rodgers said: “For us the objectives are very much the same – we want to finish in that top four. We know there’s a long road but the points can whittle away very quickly.

“We’re seven points behind that but we’ll take each game as it comes and if we can keep this momentum going and keep the focus we can have a real good second half to the season.”

Simon Mignolet will return in the Liverpool goal at the expense of the injured Brad Jones.

The Belgian had been “indefinitely” dropped by manager Brendan Rodgers, but was called upon from the bench when Jones suffered a thigh injury against Burnley on Boxing Day.

Fabio Borini returns to the squad following suspension but defenders Dejan Lovren and Glen Johnson (both groin) and Jon Flanagan (knee) are still not fit.

Jefferson Montero is set to miss out for Swansea.

The Ecuador winger, who has been in fine form lately, damaged a hamstring in the Boxing Day win against Aston Villa and is unlikely to feature although he will be assessed in the next 24 hours.

Swansea manager Garry Monk will again utilise his squad in this hectic festive period with possible recalls for Jazz Richards, Wayne Routledge and Bafetimbi Gomis, while on-loan Spurs midfielder Tom Carroll could replace former Liverpool man Jonjo Shelvey.

Monk has overseen Swansea’s best start to a Premier League campaign and has silenced the pre-season doubters who felt the rookie manager would preside over a relegation struggle.

And after back-to-back festive victories the 35-year-old is clearly looking up rather than down the table and has urged his players to “hunt the teams” above them.

“I felt that when I took this job at the start of the season that I needed a plan to put on the pitch,” Monk said.

“A lot of people would doubt myself, the squad and what we could achieve, and a lot had us down as relegation favourites.

“Having that plan has helped me and helped the team, I have a long-term plan but in the short term I need to get results and we are getting them.

“The 40-point mark secures the club and we are in a very good position.

“It is about creating expectation without getting carried away and I said to the players in the build-up to this period that I don’t want to be that team looking over their shoulder as we have in the past.

“We have to be mindful of what’s below us but I want them to hunt the teams in front and have that mentality going into games.”

Brendan Rodgers believes Raheem Sterling is on course to become a top-class Premier League striker as he continues to develop his eye for goal.

The Liverpool manager admits Sterling is a natural winger but has tasked him with being the focal point of the attack as Rodgers continues to tweak his side to replicate the goalscoring feats they achieved last season.

After scoring three times in his last three games, including the winner against Burnley on Boxing Day, Rodgers believes that Sterling’s work rate and willingness to learn are the key factors in a so far seamless transformation.

Rodgers said: “I think there are players that are natural-born goalscorers and they live to score goals, they want to score a goal. Some are not so worried about what they do in the build-up, not concerned about how hard they work, but they want to score a goal. They have that ability to get a goal.

“Then you get other players, the top-class players who work very hard, who have that ability to score a lot of goals and create goals and that’s something that develops with confidence over your career. I think we see him like that and I think his numbers over his career will keep improving and improving.

“For me I’m very happy with his performance. He’s gone into that role, he’s offered us a real threat, his pace in every game is phenomenal but he’s got that bit of composure at the end. He’s going to miss some chances of course but you’ve seen at Burnley the one opportunity he had he took it.”

Sterling has big shoes to fill as he bids to compensate for the absence of Daniel Sturridge. In his relatively short career to date, Sterling has only reached double figures once, last season.

Stepping up could be seen as a big ask for a player who has only just turned 20 years old, but his manager has every confidence he can stand up to the weight of expectation.

“He deals with it so well but it’s hard to hide the talent,” Rodgers added. “If you have that talent you’re going to be under that scrutiny and we protect the players as much as we can.

“I’ve seen him develop into a wonderful young man. He’s got great maturity. I think back to the boy when I arrived here when he was 17 and I see him now and the maturity that he has and how he’s taken it all in his stride. Of course he’s had difficult moments but as I said he’s a real pleasure to work with.

“He obviously realises the harder you climb the ladder people want to criticise you more as well but that’s all part of the dance. I’m delighted to work with him and hopefully we can be together for a long time.”

Liverpool are said to be one of many sides keeping an eye on James Milner’s contract situation at Manchester City.

The England international’s current deal expires in the summer and Liverpool have long been linked with the 28-year-old.

The Daily Mail write that Liverpool are understood to be among the clubs ready to sign him on a free transfer if he decides to leave the Etihad after five years.

Milner is quoted discussing the contract talks with City, which have reportedly reached a stalemate.

“I hope it will be sorted,” he said. “We’re still in talks. I’m waiting for the club to come back and hopefully they will soon.”

The versatile midfielder would certainly be a welcome addition at Anfield, offering excellent experience and options for any Premier League side.

The Express say Arsenal are also interested.

Liverpool host Swansea City at Anfield for the second time this season on Monday night as the Reds look to build on Boxing Day’s victory over Burnley. Ben Twelves discusses the possible team selection options available to Brendan Rodgers for the tough match.

Football - FA Premier League - Burnley FC v Liverpool FC

Liverpool return to Anfield following Boxing Day’s scraped 1-0 win over Burnley for the first of a home double header against Swansea on Monday night, before Leicester arrive three days later for the first game of the New Year.

It was far from a spectacular performance from Liverpool against Sean Dyche’s team last time out, but the result was the all-important factor in the first of an extremely winnable set of matches which could see Rodgers’ side place themselves right back in the mix for a top four challenge should they take maximum advantage of the kind run.

While it’s never a bad thing to win ugly as the Reds did on Friday afternoon, maximum points only mask fundamental issues in performances and Liverpool will certainly have to address theirs and improve against Gary Monk’s team, who have already caused big problems at Anfield once this season in the Capital One Cup.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, October 28, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli scores the first goal against Swansea City during the Football League Cup 4th Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers almost paid the price for naming an unchanged and tired starting XI against second-bottom Burnley – which was reflected in an extremely lethargic performance – and with the Reds now set for two more matches in the space of just four days, the Northern Irishman must keep his side fresh with rotation needed over the upcoming fixtures beginning on Monday for the visit of the Swans.

The Team

Football - FA Premier League - Burnley FC v Liverpool FC

Rodgers confirmed in his pre-match press conference that little has changed with those available for selection, but Brad Jones is set to surrender his position in goal to Simon Mignolet as the Australian was substituted due to a thigh injury after just 16 minutes against Burnley.

Jon Flanagan, Dejan Lovren and Joe Allen are therefore all unlikely to be involved also but Fabio Borini could return to the squad after serving his one match suspension, though question marks hang over Kolo Toure’s availability after the experienced Ivorian was replaced in the back three at half time by Emre Can on Boxing Day.

The powerful German will be hopeful of keeping his place in the back line alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho after an assured second half display and with little other option available currently it seems a genuine possibility.

Steven Gerrard desperately needs a rest from the midfield battle after playing all but four minutes in the last five games and with options short, Rodgers will have to shuffle his pack to make that happen with Alberto Moreno an available option to come in, allowing for Jordan Henderson to move centrally.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno in action against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Mario Balotelli regained his place on the bench for the trip to Turf Moor, but with the Liverpool managers’ recent comments on the Italian’s unsuitability to the way the Reds boss wants his team to play, the front three of Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling is likely to remain the same – with Balotelli once more on the bench.

The Line Up

Despite the similarly looking squad at his disposal, Rodgers does have options available to introduce fresh legs to his side on Monday.

Mignolet will come into the team in goal and after a solid second half Can should keep his place in the back three – something Rodgers has hinted could happen.

Football - FA Premier League - Burnley FC v Liverpool FC

Gerrard needs to make way from the middle of the park and Moreno should come into the side on the left of midfield with Markovic switching to the right, allowing Henderson to relocate to a much preferred central position alongside Lucas.

The front three is likely to remain the same, but with Balotelli back and available – and having shown at Old Trafford in his last outing that with mobility around him he can be a threat – the Italian should come into the side for Lallana to provide a boost to a tiring Reds attack alongside Coutinho and Sterling.

Those changes in the 3-4-2-1 system would see Liverpool line up like this:

Swansea 3-4-2-1 Option 1

Another option for the Liverpool boss is that he could give his side a more solid look but with a high energy midfield and two man strike partnership in the comfortable 4-diamond-2 formation. In that shape, the Reds should line up like this:

Swansea diamond

However, with the 3-4-2-1 bringing an improved attacking edge back to the side in recent games, I expect Rodgers to keep faith with the system and therefore Liverpool to line up like this come kick-off Monday night:

Swansea 3-4-2-1- Option 2

After a number of games of failing to match performance level with a desired result, Liverpool swung to the opposite on Boxing Day as they failed to match a positive result with a worthy performance.

The balance between the two components continues to evade Rodgers and his team but the fixture against Swansea will need to see the factors in much closer proximity in order for Liverpool to record another welcome victory against Monk’s underrated side.

"He deals with it so well but it's hard to hide the talent," Rodgers added. "If you have that talent you're going to be under that scrutiny and we protect the players as much as we can.

"I've seen him develop into a wonderful young man. He's got great maturity. I think back to the boy when I arrived here when he was 17 and I see him now and the maturity that he has and how he's taken it all in his stride. Of course he's had difficult moments but as I said he's a real pleasure to work with.

"He obviously realises the harder you climb the ladder people want to criticise you more as well but that's all part of the dance. I'm delighted to work with him and hopefully we can be together for a long time."

Liverpool close the first half of their campaign on Sunday as they welcome Swansea to Anfield. A win would see them draw level on points with the visitors, although the Welsh side possess a superior goal difference. As they bid to close the gap on the Champions League places, Rodgers hopes that an improved second half of the season can see them fulfil their pre-season ambitions.

Rodgers said: "For us the objectives are very much the same - we want to finish in that top four. We know there's a long road but the points can whittle away very quickly. We're seven points behind that but we'll take each game as it comes and if we can keep this momentum going and keep the focus we can have a real good second half to the season."

Rodgers sees Sterling blossoming

Raheem Sterling: Netted the winner at Burnley

Raheem Sterling: Netted the winner at Burnley

Brendan Rodgers believes Raheem Sterling is on course to become a top-class Premier League striker as he continues to develop his eye for goal.

The Liverpool manager admits Sterling is a natural winger but has tasked him with being the focal point of the attack as Rodgers continues to tweak his side to replicate the goalscoring feats they achieved last season.

After scoring three times in his last three games, including the winner against Burnley on Boxing Day, Rodgers believes that Sterling's work rate and willingness to learn are the key factors in a so far seamless transformation.

Rodgers said: "I think there are players that are natural-born goalscorers and they live to score goals, they want to score a goal. Some are not so worried about what they do in the build-up, not concerned about how hard they work, but they want to score a goal. They have that ability to get a goal.

"Then you get other players, the top-class players who work very hard, who have that ability to score a lot of goals and create goals and that's something that develops with confidence over your career. I think we see him like that and I think his numbers over his career will keep improving and improving.

"For me I'm very happy with his performance. He's gone into that role, he's offered us a real threat, his pace in every game is phenomenal but he's got that bit of composure at the end. He's going to miss some chances of course but you've seen at Burnley the one opportunity he had he took it."

Pendapat anda?

Barca & Real Madrid mungkin lg kuat dari kebanyakkan team EPL tapi keterujaan menonton EPL tu lagi membara berbanding menonton La Liga. Sekarang kita memperkatakan tentang liga terbaik bukannya pasukan terbaik atau pasukan kebangsaan terbaik.

POSTMATCHVERDICTANDANALYSIS

Burnley v Liverpool (0-1)

26.12.2014

BURLIV

Kalau tak nak baca habis tengok gambar pun ok...haha

"The Reds akhirnya mendapat 3 mata&039;

Mereka sentiasa cuba pressuring pihak lawan setiap kali dalam off ball situation. Menekan Liverpool dalam shape 4-1-3-1-1. Mereka bermain daring /berani football.

Liverpool drop deep

Burnley Chances

Back 3 Liverpool.

CAN

Liverpool Second half.

Liverpool sat back and counter attack.

Ia agak ugly tetapi dalam bolasepak win is a win and cleansheet is a cleansheet.

menjadi striker.

Team Rating

Burnley : 6.5

Liverpool : 6.3
