Brendan Rodgers called upon his team’s performance level to improve as Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League with a 1-1 draw at home to Basel on Wednesday night.

Video by YouTube user ‘MrBeanyman’

On a weak night for Liverpool in a match they had to win to secure qualification from the group stages of the competition, Swiss champions Basel took the lead with a Fabian Frei strike after 25 minutes.

Steven Gerrard‘s excellent free-kick equaliser twelve minutes from time was too little too late for the Reds, who will drop into the Europa League for the rest of the season.

“We hadn’t been in it [Champions League] for a long time — it’s been five years since we’d been here so the players deserved the opportunity to be in here,” Rodgers told ITV Sport after the game.

“We now have to fight going forward to be in it next season and obviously our performance level needs to improve.”

“But we’re not too far off the top four then we’ll have a chance of being in it and we’ll be better next season.”

Liverpool now head to Old Trafford to visit Manchester United in the Premier League this Sunday, 14th December at 1.30pm.

Seemingly much has been abandoned at Anfield lately and last night Brendan Rodgers certainly abandoned his own philosophy as his side went in search of the winning goal his side required against Basel.

Resorting to throwing Martin Skrtel up front as an auxiliary centre-forward, having withdrawn the only forward named in the matchday squad at half-time, reeked of desperation – it also showed a complete lack of plan.

It also showed clearly, there are deep issues at Liverpool.

The irony of Rodgers’ side limping out of the competition they did so well to get back in after five years out due to the excellence of two of Europe’s finest forwards, doing so without a forward on the pitch.

It was almost like that Europa League game back in the early days of Rodgers’ tenure when Adam Morgan and Samed Yesil were called upon, such was the dearth of attacking options available after Andy Carroll was shown the exit and the club failed to bring in Clint Dempsey.

Rodgers now has exiled Fabio Borini, refusing to even name the Italian among his subs despite being fit in the last four games.

Nobody is suggesting that Borini is the solution, but to not name him even on the bench smacks of stubborn egocentricity – “I’m the boss.” Exiling the player in this manner is sabotaging Liverpool and hurting the club. There is no benefit to be had from not naming Borini in the squad. At the least, he offers movement up front, Liverpool so often lack this season.

Indeed, Borini could have been used prior to this must-win game in order to give Rickie Lambert the much needed rest he so clearly requires. Last night’s match meant it was six starts in 16 days for the 32-year-old. No wonder he no longer has the energy even to get onside.

So with Borini, a player who Rodgers was eager to sign for the club upon his appointment, abandoned, Rodgers named just two players from his eight summer signings in the starting eleven – and they, Dejan Lovren and Lambert, were only starting due to injury to Kolo Toure and Daniel Sturridge.

£25 million man and Rodgers’ No.1 priority signing in the summer, Adam Lallana, remained as an unused sub.

£12 million left-back Alberto Moreno was, somehow, dropped for Jose Enrique. Rodgers corrected that mistake at half-time, thus wasting a valuable substitution in the process.

With Borini and his new signings abandoned, it was then another demonstration of how the fast paced, attacking and pressing football of last season has also been abandoned. Yet again we were served up a turgid first-half display completely devoid of any creativity, quality or inspiration.

These poor first half performances – the last two home league games haven’t seen a single shot on target in the opening 45 on either occasion – must be happening for a reason. It’s happened too many times this season for it to be coincidence. There is a serious managerial problem causing them.

How The Kop longed for a fast and furious, high intensity opening we became so accustomed to last season, blowing sides away in the opening half hour of games. And how we so often saw Rafa Benitez‘s sides set up on big European nights to surprise often superior opposition – pressing relentlessly and getting the crowd going to create an uncomfortable experience for the visitors.

There was none of that, instead Basel had the freedom of Anfield to pick passes around Liverpool’s double-pivot midfield of Lucas and Joe Allen.

Alas, the half-time changes were much needed and for his brief cameo Lazar Markovic actually looked half decent. Likewise, the decisions made by Rodgers after the sending off made sense, switching to three at the back and bringing on Coutinho for Lucas who was on a booking.

Shortly after Steven Gerrard‘s trademark free-kick with 10 minutes to go, Rodgers decided to leave Skrtel up front, completely going for broke. The Slovak almost scored the winning goal in stoppage time with a near-post run that Liverpool’s forwards this season haven’t been making.

It was interesting though that Rodgers took the decision to leave his centre-back as the big target man up front, happy for his side to launch balls towards him as his side chased the game.

Rodgers is man famed for his ball retention ideologies and patience in possession. Yet this showed the complete opposite. Yes, desperate times mean desperate measures and this was certainly a show of desperation.

Speaking back in 2012, shortly before his appointment at Anfield, Rodgers told Match of the Day of his Swansea side: “For the last five minutes, for some reason, we kicked the ball long.” Admittedly, this was side about his side in a match they were winning at the time, but the philosophy of Rodgers has always been to be patient and pass, not resort to long balls to a target man.

That philosophy was abandoned – much like, seemingly, any plan has been this season.

Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday, after a 1-1 draw with Basel. We assess each Reds player on a bitterly disappointing night at Anfield.

Liverpool 1-1 Basel

Champions League, Group B, Matchday 6

Tuesday, 9th December 2014

SIMON MIGNOLET- 6 (out of 10)

The 26-year-old’s passing from the back was nervy all evening, and his kicking was erratic as ever. Made a couple of decent saves late on, but still nowhere near the required standard for a Liverpool goalkeeper in the Champions League.

Vote Mignolet as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

GLEN JOHNSON- 5.5

Johnson kept going to be fair to him, but he lacked quality throughout, losing the ball far too often, and was part of an extremely dodgy defence. Played far too many games in quick succession.

Vote Johnson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

MARTIN SKRTEL- 5.5

The Slovakian was far from blameless by any means, but he did at least show some heart. Had a couple of decent efforts on goal, and won plenty in the air. Almost scored in stoppage time when deployed as an auxiliary centre-forward.

Vote Skrtel as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

DEJAN LOVREN- 5.5

Lovren looked as shaky as ever at times, and he still looks devoid of any confidence whatsoever. Actually played better when Liverpool were down to 10 men, winning challenges and showing more quality.

Vote Lovren as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

JOSE ENRIQUE- 4

The Spaniard was pitiful during his 45 minutes on the pitch. He lost the ball continually in dangerous areas and offered no attacking thrust at all. Not good enough, and it’s rather baffling why he started.

Vote Enrique as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

LUCAS LEIVA- 5

Having played so well of late, Lucas was disappointing. He looked ponderous on the ball, and lacked creativity and urgency. Started brightly but struggled as the game progressed and was withdrawn having been booked.

Vote Leiva as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

JOE ALLEN- 5

The Welshman divides opinion, but he offered little. His passing was slack, physically he was weak and his general influence was simply not good enough. Perhaps wasted in a deeper role alongside Lucas, rather than further forward where he can influence play more.

Vote Allen as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

JORDAN HENDERSON- 6.5

The 24-year-old never stopped all night, and looked one of the Reds’ most lively players. Not everything came off for him, but at least he was a threat. Almost won it with a fierce strike in the dying seconds. Lined up on the left to begin with with high pressing and energy. Gave it his all.

Vote Henderson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

STEVEN GERRARD- 6.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard scores the equalising goal against FC Basel to level the score 1-1 during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The skipper had had a stinker until the last 20 minutes in truth, but yet again he was the man who almost dragged his side to victory. His free-kick was sensational, and he rolled back the years late on, running at the Basel defence and producing incisive passes. It’s about time other people started stepping up to the plate.

Vote Gerrard as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

RAHEEM STERLING- 6.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling looks dejected against FC Basel during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 20-year-old was always lively, but his final ball and touch were poor throughout. His decision-making will improve with age, but he remains raw. Certainly, again, Liverpool’s main attacking threat.

Vote Sterling as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

RICKIE LAMBERT- 4

The 32-year-old looked completely out of his depth, offering no movement, guile or goal threat, and he was hooked at half-time by Brendan Rodgers. He looks shattered, and has been played too much by the manager of late.

Vote Lambert as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

Substitutes

ALBERTO MORENO (on for Enrique 46)- 6

The young Spaniard added more attacking threat than Enrique, but defensively he continues to look very rash.

Vote Moreno as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic is shown a red card and sent off against FC Basel during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

LAZAR MARKOVIC (on for Lambert 46)- 6.5

Having added a spark when he came on, he was then sent-off for supposedly lashing out. It was an extremely harsh decision. The 20-year-old looked bright during his 15 minutes he was on the pitch, dribbling at defenders and actually showing attacking intent.

Vote Markovic as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

PHILIPPE COUTINHO (on for Lucas 74)- 6

The Brazilian added creativity that was lacking so hugely at times. Needs to play more often – in a central role, not out wide.

Liverpool limped out of the Champions League after failing to get the victory they required against Basel on Tuesday night at Anfield, eliminated after just one win on their return to the competition.

Brendan Rodgers‘ decision to start Jose Enrique at left-back, a decision he then changed by subbing the Spaniard for compatriot Alberto Moreno at half-time, was one of many talking points among supporters post-match.

By playing Enrique, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren, Rodgers had reunited the defence that played so poorly at QPR back in October.

Lazar Markovic’s harsh dismissal was obviously a talking point too, as was Liverpool’s lack of attacking intent and quality in the first-half.

Others were discussing the removal of Rickie Lambert at half-time, meaning The Reds ended the game down to 10 men and with Martin Skrtel up front, as Rodgers completely abandoned his philosophy.

Here’s some player and fan reaction from the game:

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and captain Steven Gerrard were in total agreement about the side’s performances not being good enough to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

A 1-1 draw against Basle in a must-win encounter at Anfield, which saw substitute Lazar Markovic sent off, meant the Reds finished third in Group B and now have to face the Europa League in the new year.

Just five points and five goals in six matches told its own story and Rodgers accepted they had come up short. “We are obviously disappointed to go out. We had earned the right to be in it after a wonderful season last year,” he said.

“Over the course of the games we weren’t good enough, we didn’t get enough points and ultimately went out.

“First half we weren’t good enough. Technically we were way short.

“Our positioning wasn’t good. The second half we were much better on that front. In the last 10 minutes, we just couldn’t find the final pass.”

Gerrard, who scored a free-kick with 10 minutes to go to cancel out Fabian Frei’s first-half opener and set up a grandstand finish, was equally honest about the campaign.

“We haven’t gone out of the competition because of our performance tonight,” he told ITV1. “We’ve gone out because away at Basle we weren’t good enough, in our last game (against Ludogorets) we conceded a stupid goal towards injury time.

“You always qualify over the six games and unfortunately we haven’t been good enough.”

Liverpool were not helped by the harsh dismissal of substitute Markovic, 15 minutes after arriving as a half-time substitute, for flicking an arm in the face of Behrang Safari.

“I thought the sending off was really disappointing decision by the referee,” added Rodgers.

“Lazar Markovic gets sent off for that, his fingernail barely touches the nose of the defender and the defender is the guy who should be looked at for his reaction.

“But we really took the fight to them with 10 men. In that final half hour we were outstanding.

Liverpool, without the injured Daniel Sturridge, have struggled for goals this term. Sturridge, frustrated he could play no part, wrote on Twitter: “We fought hard man. Sat here devastated wishing I could have helped. We’ll come back stronger from this and i’m working hard to do the same.”

Basle coach Paulo Sousa admitted the red card roused Liverpool into a final flourish but he would not comment on the offence.

“It created difficulties for us in the end,” he said. “But it is not for me to contest these decisions. I will not contest what Rodgers says. “From what I hear from my players he (Safari) is not that sort of player.”

Brendan Rodgers admits Liverpool not good enough in Champions League exit

Unknown   at  07:58  No comments

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted his side only have themselves to blame after they were dumped out of the Champions League.

Having taken just four points from five Group B matches, the Reds needed to beat Basel at Anfield on Tuesday to finish above the Swiss side and make the last 16.

But they could only manage a 1-1 draw as Lazar Markovic was sent off on the hour mark and Steven Gerrard cancelled out Fabian Frei’s opener with an excellent late free-kick.

“The expectation was to get through the group and we haven’t done that,” said Rodgers. “It wasn’t good enough over the course of the group, but we will learn from the experience. We need to be better.

“First half we were very disappointing, our possession and our position in the game was disappointing. Technically we were way short, but second half the players were magnificent.”

Unfortunately for Liverpool, their efforts to get back into the contest were hampered by a red card to half-time substitute Markovic after 61 minutes.

The Serbian barely caught Behrang Safari with his outstretched hand but referee Bjorn Kuipers decided there was enough in it to warrant a straight red card, much to the disappointment of Rodgers.

“It was never a sending off,” he said. “If Lazar or any other player gets sent off for that you are going to have many more throughout the competition.

“It was a disappointing decision and if anything the player who goes down should be looked at, the fingernail barely touched his nose and he has down holding his face.”

Despite being down 10 men, Liverpool almost snatched victory as Jordan Henderson twice went close in the dying stages.

“The players gave everything in the second half,” said Rodgers. “The quality, tempo and speed of the game was better and it looked like they (Basel) were hanging on by the end.

“We are disappointed to go out but we showed the character to come back and give ourselves a fighting chance. The Europa League is still a prestigious tournament; there are great teams in there and it’s great experience for the younger players. It’s still European football and we will try hard to do well in that.”

Liverpool’s Champions League dreams are over, following a 1-0 loss to Basel at Anfield. It was wretched night from start to finish.

Liverpool 1-1 Basel

Premier League / Anfield / Saturday, 6th December 2014

Goals: Gerrard (81); Frei (25)

Sent-off: Markovic (60)

By Henry Jackson

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Group B - Liverpool FC v FC Basel

A huge game awaited for Liverpool at Anfield, with the Reds knowing only a win over Basel would see them qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

Brendan Rodgers made four changes to the side that disappointingly drew 0-0 with Sunderland, with Jose Enrique, Dejan Lovren, Joe Allen and Steven Gerrard recalled at the expense of Alberto Moreno, the injured Kolo Toure, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana.

Anfield was at its atmospheric best, and a night similar to that unforgettable evening against Olympiakos a decade ago was called for. The Reds started with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Henderson on the left and Raheem Sterling on the right.

Gerrard clipped a harmful effort into the hands of Tomas Vaclik and Henderson fired harmlessly over in the first few minutes, but there were definite signs of nerves among the Liverpool players.

Shkelzen Gashi shot over after hesitancy between Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson, and the in-form Swiss outfit were looking threatening. Defensively the Reds looked woeful, and minutes later Basel were in front.

Fabian Frei fired a terrific strike into the corner of the Kop net after 24 minutes, and Liverpool needed two goals to go through. They had been appalling, quite frankly.

Rodgers’ men tried to rally, with Sterling shooting tamely at Vaclik, but if anything it looked more likely that Basel would get a second. Marco Streller had a glorious chance to do just that in the 33rd minute, but volleyed wide.

Fabian Schar saw his effort blocked by Johnson, and Gashi had a goal ruled out for offside, and they were final acts of note in a horrible opening 45 minutes for Liverpool. The formation had not worked at all, and the passing had been as we’ve seen for a long, long time. Changes were needed at the interval.

Half-time: Liverpool 0-1 Basel

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Group B - Liverpool FC v FC Basel

Rodgers made two substitutions at the break, with Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic coming on for the awful Jose Enrique and ineffective Rickie Lambert. There was immediately more urgency about their play.

Despite having more of the ball, Liverpool still simply couldn’t create anything of note. Markovic, who added a real spark, saw an effort blocked. Taulant Xhaka shot inches wide.

On the hour mark, the Reds’ night went from bad to worse. Markovic was sent-off for throwing an arm, and it seemed extremely harsh. It was all but the final nail in Liverpool’s coffin.

Skrtel’s decent long-range effort flashed wide, but there was suddenly a flat feeling around Anfield. Gerrard nearly won a penalty, but it was good piece of goalkeeping by Vaclik. The skipper then shot harmlessly wide in the 73rd minute.

After 81 minutes Liverpool were given faint hope hope. Gerrard’s sensational free-kick curled in off the post, and the Reds had nine minutes to save themselves.

Luca Zuffi forced Mignolet into a smart save, and at the other end the ball almost ricochet into Basel’s net off a defender.

It wasn’t meant to be though, despite last-gasp efforts from Skrtel and Henderson, and Liverpool were out of the Champions League in the group stages. The Europa League now awaits.

In truth, if you can’t qualify from a group containing Ludogorets and Basel, you don’t deserve to go through. Another bitterly disappointing evening on Merseyside.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Lovren, Skrtel, Jose Enrique (Moreno 46), Lucas (Coutinho 74), Allen, Henderson, Gerrard, Sterling, Lambert (Markovic 46).

Subs not used: Jones, Sakho, Can, Lallana.

Basel starting XI: Vaclik, Schar, Suchy, Safari, Zuffi, Xhaka, Frei, Eleny, Gonzalez, Gashi, Streller.
