Lloyd Jones: Leaves Liverpool on season-long loan move

Blackpool have made their second signing of the day with the capture of Liverpool defender Lloyd Jones.

The 19-year-old, who captains the Reds' Under-21s, will stay at Bloomfield Road on a season-long loan.

Jones is an England Under-20 international and has yet to feature for Liverpool's first team, though he has spent time on loan at Cheltenham and Accrington.

He follows Jack Redshaw through the door at Blackpool as boss Neil McDonald reshapes his squad ahead of the Sky Bet League 1 campaign.

Jordan Henderson has said he is "delighted and proud" to have been named new Liverpool captain, replacing MLS-bound skipper Steven Gerrard.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who joined from Sunderland in 2011 for £16m, has emerged as an integral member of the Anfield side, featuring in all but one of their Premier League games last season.

The appointment was widely-expected after having deputised as captain in games for Gerrard last season, with Mamadou Sakho, James Milner or Martin Skrtel tipped to replace the England international as vice-captain.

Henderson told liverpoolfc.com: "I'm absolutely delighted and proud. It is a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this football club.

"When Steven wasn't in the team last season, I tried to do the best I could when I stepped in and took the armband. Now I'll be looking to carry that on and continue to grow as a captain.

"I'll look to give my best all of the time, put the team firmly first and try to give them - or help them with - whatever they need from me.

"I've learnt a lot off Stevie and how he conducted himself as the captain of this club both on and off the field.

"You'll always learn from top players - and Steven was exactly that. I'll use what I learnt from him to help me, but I also have to do things in the way I think is right.

"I'll carry on from what I was doing last season and I'll also try to take on more responsibility for the team and my teammates.

“We all have the same goal - and that's to bring success to this club and our incredible supporters."

Henderson has made 186 appearances for Liverpool in his four years so far on Merseyside, with 19 of those coming whilst wearing the skipper’s armband.

He had been the club’s vice-captain since last September and manager Brendan Rodgers believes he was a natural successor to Gerrard.

He added: "Jordan is someone who leads through example through his actions, attitude and application. He shows total commitment to the game and is a role model professional.

"He is also greatly respectful of the great traditions associated with being Liverpool captain and the responsibilities that come with it.

“He has been blessed to learn first-hand from one of the greatest the club has ever had in Steven Gerrard.

"Jordan has grown as a person and as a player since arriving at Liverpool and is ready to take up this challenge. He will be his own person, with his own style of leadership and his own ideas and methods."

Raheem Sterling: Returned to Liverpool training on Friday

Raheem Sterling: Returned to Liverpool training on Friday

Raheem Sterling has returned to Liverpool training after suffering from illness, with Man City reportedly preparing a final bid for the winger.

The 20-year-old missed Liverpool's last two training sessions through illness, and has reportedly told the club that he does not wish to be included in the squad for their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.

Sterling has however returned to training on Friday morning, but significant doubts remain over his future at Anfield.

According to Sky Sports, the England international told boss Brendan Rodgers on Wednesday that he wishes to leave not due to money, but because he no longer wishes to play for the Northern Irishman.

After having two bids - both of up to £40m - previously rejected by the Merseysiders in the past month, Manchester City are thought to be preparing a third and final offer for Sterling.

According to the Daily Mirror, Manuel Pellegrini's men believe an offer of £40m up front, with an additional £5m in clauses, will persuade Liverpool to part with their young star.

Steven Gerrard: Had a pop at Raheem Sterling

Steven Gerrard: Had a pop at Raheem Sterling

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has criticised Raheem Sterling's behaviour and told him to 'be a man' about his future.

Sterling, who has made no secret of his desire to leave Anfield this summer, is understood to have missed pre-season training for a second time on Thursday and refused to be part of the club's pre-season tour to the Far East.

Sky sources understand the 20-year-old forward no longer wants to work with manager Brendan Rodgers - something the club strongly denies.

But, in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News HQ from new club LA Galaxy, Gerrard accused Sterling of letting down Liverpool's supporters.

Gerrard said: “I’m not happy with all that carry-on and I don’t think there’s any need for it. They all need to be men about the situation.

“Raheem needs to go in and speak to the owners and to Brendan himself, tell them what he wants and go about it that way. You don’t have to throw illnesses in and refuse to go on tour.

"There are millions and millions of Liverpool fans around the world who are itching to see Raheem Sterling in a Liverpool kit. So I don’t think it’s fair on them if he is behaving like that.”

Liverpool have already rejected two bids - of up to £40m - from Manchester City for Sterling and Rodgers remains keen to keep the player.

Sterling is under contract with the Reds until 2017 but his relationship with the club has deteriorated since he turned down the opportunity to sign an improved deal in January.

Since then he has given an interview, unsanctioned by the club, in which he stressed he was not "a money-grabbing 20-year-old".

His agent Aidy Ward subsequently added fuel to the fire by insisting Sterling would not sign a new contract "for £900,000-a-week".
