The Reds have arrived in America to play four (possibly five) pre-season fixtures ahead of the 2014/15 campaign. Henry Jackson highlights players, opponents and tactics for Liverpool fans to keep their eye on over the next fortnight.

Brendan Rodgers and his Liverpool squad arrived in Boston on Sunday as embark on their pre-season tour of north east America.

The Reds will play four matches in the space of 10 days – against Roma, Olympiakos, Manchester City and AC Milan. There could be a fifth fixture down in Miami should they win their group in the ‘Guinness International Champions Cup’.

With Liverpool’s World Cup players returning for the first time since last season and several new signings also set to make their first appearances in a Reds shirt, it’s sure to be both an exciting few weeks and a great chance for Rodgers to perfect his plans ahead of the new campaign.

Players to Watch

LAZAR MARKOVIC

Football - Liverpool FC Preseason Tour 2014 - Preston North End FC v Liverpool FC

Much is expected of Markovic, who joined from Benfica for £19.8m last week.

The 20-year-old has been tipped to become one of Europe’s best players by European scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen, and it will be hugely exciting to see how the Serbia international adjusts to life at Liverpool.

Fast, skilful and creative, Markovic has the chance to endear himself to Reds fans straight away in America. He could feature in the first friendly against Roma in Boston.

ADAM LALLANA

Lallana’s arrival at Anfield has not necessarily been met with unanimous positivity due to the hefty £25m fee, but the 26-year-old has the perfect opportunity to win over his doubters over the next couple of weeks.

The former Southampton captain will likely be tested in a number of roles. He’s equally happy in central midfield, out wide or in a ‘number 10′ role.

The battle for a midfield starting berth is extremely strong and Lallana will want to cement his place from the off.

Lallana, and other England stars Gerrard, Sturridge, Johnson and Sterling won’t feature in Boston against Roma on Wednesday, their first action will be in Chicago against Olympiakos on Sunday.

JORDON IBE

PRESTON, ENGLAND - Saturday, July 19, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Ibe in action against Preston North End during a preseason friendly match at Deepdale Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The development of Raheem Sterling has been absolutely sensational over the last 12 months, and it looks as though Ibe may be replicating his young teammate.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed an excellent pre-season so far, setting up both goals in the 2-1 win over Preston on Saturday and playing with a confidence and maturity beyond his years.

While some may feel Ibe’s first-team opportunities will be few and far between next season, such is the squad’s depth in attacking areas, Rodgers has shown that he will pick players on merit, regardless of their age.

Opponents to Watch

ROMA

Roma could potentially be a Champions League opponent of Liverpool’s in the group stages, and their clash in Boston should be an intriguing one.

The Giallorossi enjoyed a terrific season of their own last season, and their surprise second-place finish in Serie A had definite echoes of Liverpool’s 2013/14 Premier League feats about it.

They have proven quality in their ranks, from Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman in midfield, to new signing Ashley Cole and highly-rated Moroccan Mehdi Benatia at the back.

Although pre-season games don’t always prove much, it will still be interesting to see Rodgers’ men compete against a top side.

MANCHESTER CITY

Last season’s top two do battle in New York on the last day of the month, and it will be compelling to see how Liverpool do against the champions.

City have strengthened their own squad too, bringing in Fernando and Bacary Sagna from Porto and Chelsea, respectively, as they look to dominate English football. There will be other signings to come too.

A strong showing from the Reds will give them belief ahead of the new campaign, even though the result is fairly meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

THE MANAGER

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - Wednesday, July 16, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during a preseason friendly match against Brøndby at Brøndby Stadion. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers will be tweaking his tactics next season in order to make up for the loss of Luis Suarez.

Rather than sign a player of the Uruguayan’s ilk – there is barely anybody in world football who can match him – the Reds boss is bringing in players who can star in a 4-3-3 system, with Daniel Sturridge as the central striker.

Having started the Preston friendly with a midfield diamond before switching to 4-3-3, it will be interesting to see how often the boss uses each formation across the four games.

The likes of Markovic, Lallana, Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and the incoming Loic Remy will all be expected to fill the void left by Suarez, as well as likely backup striker Rickie Lambert.

This tour is the perfect opportunity for the Northern Irishman to work out his best side, and gain an idea on how best to rotate his squad and keep his players fresh. The addition of Champions League football means rotation is paramount.

OFF THE PITCH

While what happens on the pitch is clearly important, the real reason behind Liverpool’s tour is to improve the club as a brand in a country where the popularity of football is increasing at a huge rate.

The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all hugely powerful clubs financially, and it is imperative that Liverpool try and stay in touch in that respect. Increasing their fan base in America is something that can definitely aid this.

The club will be holding numerous events in Boston, Chicago, New York and Charlotte; with player appearances, open training and soccer clinics.

This tour should be one huge positive, both in terms of the team’s success and the continued growth of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool are close to completing deals for three of their targets; Dejan Lovren, Loic Remy and Divock Origi.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Wednesday, November 17, 2010: France's Loic Remy in action against England during the International Friendly match at Wembley Stadium. (Pic by: David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

French forward Remy will fly to Boston today in order to undergo a medical and complete his £8 million move, while Lovren and Origi could follow him across the Atlantic this week too.

The news of Remy joining up with Liverpool on Monday is reported by all the major newspapers, such as The Guardian .

Remy will add depth to Liverpool’s forward options, while most reports also suggest Brendan Rodgers is keen to add one more attacking player this summer too.

Finally though, Rodgers looks set to complete the signing of his main defensive target, Southampton’s Dejan Lovren.

News of the Croatian’s transfer broke over the weekend in his homeland and is now covered by all the UK media. While the broadsheets and indeed The Liverpool Echo report Lovren’s fee as being £20 million, The Southern Daily Echo report that it’s actually €20 million (£16 million).

The Daily Mail‘s Dominic King writes that “Assuming all goes to plan with Lovren, he will link up with Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, both of whom are among a squad of more than 30 – as is goalkeeper Pepe Reina – that have arrived in Boston.”

Meanwhile, the same reports say Belgian forward Divock Origi has agreed to join Liverpool from Lille, in a move worth up to £9.8 million. He too could fly to Boston to undergo a medical and complete his move, but the 19-year-old will be loaned back to the French club this season.

Finally, there are numerous rumours that Liverpool are attempting to sign Real Madrid’s Isco on a season loan.

Loic Remy: Is on the verge of a transfer to Liverpool

Loic Remy: Is on the verge of a transfer to Liverpool

QPR striker Loic Remy has flown to Boston, USA to complete a medical ahead of his move to Liverpool, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports reported on Saturday that the two Premier League clubs had agreed an £8.5million fee for his transfer to Anfield, and it is now understood that fee could rise to £11m.

The Reds flew out to the US for their pre-season tour on Sunday, where they face Italian side Roma at Fenway Park as their first fixture of the Guinness International Cup, and wantaway striker Remy is on his way to join them.

And he could also be joined by centre-back Dejan Lovren later this week following a step forward in negotiations over his transfer from Southampton.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman has admitted he “doesn’t want to lose” Lovren, but the clubs are believed to have agreed a fee and the Croatian international is thought to be keen on the move.

France international Remy, meanwhile, has a release clause in his contract which allows him to speak to clubs in the Champions League if a fee is agreed, and the two clubs made headway over the weekend.

He attracted the attention of a host of European clubs with an impressive season-long loan at Newcastle last season in which he scored 14 goals in 26 Premier League appearances.

QPR are keen to offload the expensive forward, with chairman Tony Fernandes recently speaking of his desire to sort the player's future out quickly.

Remy, 27, and Lovren, 25, would be the Reds' fifth and sixth signings of the current transfer window following the arrivals of Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert from Southampton, Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen and Lazar Markovic from Benfica.

Iago Aspas: Sevilla switch

Sevilla have officially completed the signing of Liverpool forward Iago Aspas on a season-long loan.

The Spanish striker passed a medical on Friday after the two clubs agreed a deal, which includes the option to buy permanently, earlier in the week and the paperwork has now been finalised.

Aspas, 26, moved to Anfield from Celta Vigo last summer but had a disappointing season and made just 15 appearances, the majority as a substitute, and scored one goal.

Steven Gerrard: Captain of Liverpool side which topped Premier League's Fair Play list

Steven Gerrard: Captain of Liverpool side which topped Premier League's Fair Play list

The Football Association says its Respect Programme has led to a reduction in misconduct at all levels of the game.

Liverpool will collect the Premier League's Fair Play award at a ceremony ahead of next month's Community Shield at Wembley, where winners from local football will also be honoured.

Figures collated from 1,150 leagues have been published ahead of that event showing a 20 per cent reduction in bookings for dissent since Respect was launched in 2008, while misconduct charges fell 10 per cent.

Programme manager Dermot Collins said: "Respect is the collective responsibility of everyone involved in football to create a fair, safe and enjoyable environment in which the game can take place.

"The Respect Programme has raised awareness of appropriate behaviour both on and off the pitch for players, coaches and spectators alike."

Fair Play awards are given to a team from each of the four professional leagues in England, and Liverpool will be honoured along with Burnley, Walsall and Exeter.

Liverpool will complete a deal to sign Southampton defender Dejan Lovren in the next 48 hours, according to reports in Croatia this weekend.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 26, 2014: Everton's James McCarthy is brought down by Southampton's Dejan Lovren during the Premiership match at St Mary's Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 25-year-old has been amongst Liverpool’s top transfer targets this summer, having had a bid of £20 million turned down by the Saints last month.

Lovren even said in an interview earlier this month that his “head is already at Liverpool”, but returned to pre-season training with Southampton following his World Cup exploits for his country.

And it looks as if the Reds have gone back to the negotiating table with Crotian newspaper Sportske Novosti expecting Lovren to complete a move to Anfield by Tuesday.

The daily paper says Lovren will sign a four-year deal with Liverpool and fly out to the USA to meet up with Brendan Rodgers and his squad, who departed for a stateside tour from John Lennon Airport today.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman admitted earlier in the weekend that Lovren could be leaving St Mary’s, but only for a “top price”.

Referring to Lovren’s comments that his head was already at Liverpool, Koeman told Fox Sports, “A player shouldn’t say something like that, it’s not very proper.

“We just have to wait how it develops. For now, Dejan can still play with us. I don’t want to lose him but, if he leaves, he will only go for a top price.”

According to Metro , Southampton have already lined up Aston Villa and Holland defender Ron Vlaar as Lovren’s replacement.

Liverpool are also hoping to wrap up the signing of £8.5 million French international striker Loic Remy from QPR in the next 24 hours.

Fabio Borini: Fee agreed between Liverpool and Sunderland

Fabio Borini: Fee agreed between Liverpool and Sunderland

Sunderland transfer target Fabio Borini has joined Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States.

A fee of around £14m has been agreed between the clubs for Borini, who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light.

Gus Poyet said on Saturday he hoped to open talks with the striker, but Borini has travelled to the States in an apparent indication he intends to fight for a place at Anfield.

Liverpool have lost Luis Suarez from their attacking options, but Rickie Lambert has been recruited and Loic Remy could soon join him.

A bid of £8.5m triggered a release clause in Remy's QPR contract, and he now has permission to talk to last season's Premier League runners-up.
