Luis Suarez: Third best in world, according to statistics

Luis Suarez: Third best in world, according to statistics

Luis Suarez is the world's third best player according to WhoScored, followed by Marco Reus, Sergio Agüero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eden Hazard.

Quite why those who compile the Ballon d'Or shortlist even bother to add 21 names to a list starting with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi isn't entirely clear. Talk that Manuel Neuer might be in with an outside chance of snatching the award this year is rather refreshing, if also a little misguided.

There is an obvious chasm in quality between the two best players in the world and the best of the rest - Messi and Ronaldo are relentless goal machines in their own right.

The race for third place is incredibly hotly contested, however. Neuer, Thomas Müller, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Ángel Di María, Sergio Agüero, Philipp Lahm, Arjen Robben and Gareth Bale all spring to mind.

That list omits a player whose manager has stated the need and potential for him to step up and join the game's elite. His fans maintain he is amongst the best in the world.

So where exactly does Eden Hazard currently rank? Is he anywhere near - or close to approaching - the level of Ronaldo or Messi?

While Ronaldo's current goalscoring exploits are unrivalled (he has scored 18 goals in ten La Liga appearances this season), Messi has seven goals but also adds seven assists too (compared to Ronaldo's five).

Both players return the top two WhoScored.com ratings in Europe's top five leagues, both this season and over the course of the whole of 2014. By WhoScored rating, Hazard comes out as the seventh best player this year, accurately reflecting his current standing.

Averaging 7.87, Hazard has successfully dribbled past an opponent 122 times this calendar year, second only to Messi in Europe's top five leagues. His turning circle and change of pace whilst in possession are exceptional, drawing fouls from those incapable of otherwise halting him.

However, there is a stark difference in his return in front of goal compared to Messi and Ronaldo. Last season Hazard scored 14 goals and assisted seven, while this term he has just three goals and one assist to his name in 11 Premier League appearances. He is playing in the best-performing and highest-scoring team in England.

Hazard is without question still behind the top two, but also some others, as well.

Luis Suarez, for all his misgivings, is unplayable on his day, and while he dribbles almost as much as Hazard (he was second to the Belgian for dribbles per game in the Premier League last season), his ability in front of goal sets him apart.

His rating in league games over the course of 2014 (8.12) is the third best in Europe, and gives further credence to the argument that Suarez is next in line, even if FIFA overlooked him for the Ballon d'Or for his World Cup naughtiness.

Also ahead of Hazard in the rankings is Marco Reus, who would have only added to the relative ease with which Germany won the World Cup this summer had he been fit.

He has overcome that disappointment with a fantastic year for Borussia Dortmund. Reus has directly contributed to 20 Bundesliga goals this year, averaging 4.3 shots and three key passes per game this season.

His return would surely soar in a team that weren't performing as poorly as Dortmund. There are few finer counter-attacking players around than Reus.

Sergio Agüero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are two of the other closest challengers for the crown of the world's 'third best', but the Argentine's injury problems continue to hold him back. He has stayed fit so far this season, and is second only to Ronaldo in Europe's goalscoring charts (12) as a result.

Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, remains one of the most brilliantly unpredictable players around, and with five goals in as many Ligue 1 starts he is also still one of the most prolific goalscorers. It is criminal that he has never even featured in the Ballon d'Or or World Player of the Year top three.

Eden Hazard's quest for greatness continues, but there is still some way to go before he can truly claim to be amongst the very best on the planet. Right now, it is Luis Suarez that can claim to be the closest to Messi and Ronaldo, the runaway top two.

Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno insists he and his team-mates must get their season back on track to repay the "amazing" support Reds fans have shown them this season.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno in action against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Moreno, a B£12million acquisition from Sevilla in the summer, made a bright start to life in the Barclays Premier League when he scored a spectacular solo goal during Liverpool's 3-0 victory at Tottenham.

However, he has since been unable to add to his tally as Liverpool have struggled to replicate the form that saw them finish runners-up to Manchester City last season, with the Merseysiders 11th in the league standings ahead of Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace.

Moreno has paid tribute to Liverpool fans and admits their loyal support gives him extra motivation to improve the club's fortunes on the pitch.

"For me, these supporters are one of the few sets of fans – in fact the best – at really supporting and getting behind their team that I have seen at a football ground," the 22-year-old Spain international told his club's website.

"It's amazing and my hairs really stand on end every time I hear them cheering us on. I especially love the fact that in spite of these defeats we've had of late, they never stop or tire of supporting the team and are always there for us.

"I don't think they'll ever let us down. That's why we really have to turn things around, for that set of supporters that we have, always driving us on, we have to do it for them."

Moreno has quickly settled into life at Liverpool and hopes to remain with the club for many years.

"To be totally honest, I am extremely happy here," he said. "I'm overjoyed with how things are going.

"It has really flown by. I think that's important for a player – the months passing by quickly – as it means that things are going well, you are playing regularly and performing quite well. I really hope that I can stay here for a long time to come."

Liverpool fans have taken to social media to breath a unanimous sigh of disbelief after it emerged Daniel Sturridge has suffered yet another injury in training.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 13, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge in action against Manchester City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sturridge was just days away from returning to action for the first time since August, but pulled out of a training session on Tuesday nursing a thigh problem.

The 25-year-old was originally sidelined after suffering a thigh strain during England training at the start of September.

His expected return at the end of October was delayed after another injury and now Liverpool are waiting upon a fresh scan on his thigh to determine the extent of his absence.

Should the forward face further time out of action, it will come as a devastating blow to Liverpool’s season.

Sturridge had been expected to partner summer signing Mario Balotelli up front for only the second time when the Reds go to Crystal Palace this Sunday in the Premier League.

Here we round up a selection of reactions to the news from Liverpool fans. Let us know your thoughts and how it could potentially effect the Reds’ festive run-in in the comments below.

superreddman98 in the forums:

You’ve got to laugh or you’d cry, Rodgers will really need to earn his keep now because if we play the same way we’ve currently been playing since the last time Sturridge played (Spurs away) we could be edging closer to bottom 4 rather than top.

MikeOscar in the forums:

When it rains it pours. Truly devastating news, when will we see him back? Just emphasises even more how we should have learned how to play as a team without him though.

Mahukan Kejayaan Cepat di Bawah Brendan!

Itu alasan utama penyokong the reds mahukan Rafa Benitez. Jelas kita tak sehebat mana pun utk menghargai orang yg telah berjasa mengembalikan The Reds kembali ke kancah kejohanan utama Eropah. Memang diakui kegagalan new signing utk menambag extra energy dan duit yg dirasakan cukup utk Rodgers menggantikan kehilangan marquee player.

TAPI ! BR tu sape di mata pemain bintang, apa CV dia? Nothing ! compared to LVG , Mourinho atau Benitez sendiri. kurang pengaruh utk menarik nama nama besar ke Anfield sebab 1 good season .

Saya tahu ia am at normal utk manager dipecat jika gagaal mencapai KPI, tapi Sudah menjadi DNA Anfield utk terus menyokong manager selagi dia di dugout!

I support you my boss as long as you still the Reds boss.

*** RAFA REJOIN ? RODGERS GET SACK??

* Laporan di media Itali melaporkan Rafa bakal meninggalkan Napoli utk kembali bersama keluarga Liverpool menyaksikan Brendan dipecat. Saya tak melihat ini sesuatu yg baik diperkatakan. Saya lebih memberi keutamaan jika gabungan BR/RF muncul dlm barisan kejurulatihan Liverpool selepas penghujung musim menyaksikan Colin Pascoe tidak lagi diberi keutamaan. Ini sgt menarik!

* Saya nak fokuskan perkara positif bukan negatif dkt sini jika kepulangan Benitez terjadi ! Negatif di ruangan comment shj, TQ!!! Dpt dilihat melalui how they adapt a variety of formation need to be use.

** BRENDAN RODGERS.

Free flowing football attitude!

Very tactical coach!

* Bercerita mengenai cara Brendan transform player. Beliau sgt bagus! Lihat bagaimana beliau ubah Stevie G berperanan sbg deep-lying maker.

** RAFAEL BENITEZ. A famous believer in modern 4-2-3-1 system.

Salah seorang drpd dua ni akan bertindak more on a tackler.

So, mmg Chelsea panas punggung la.

* Sistem yg digunakan Benitez ni sebenarnya sgt penting dlm pasukan utk diadaptasi oleh target man yg mempunyai fizikal yg kuat utk hold-off defend lawan disamping create a chances utk attacking midfield.

Aurelio, Riise, Arbeloa, Finnan, antara nama2 yg sgt bagus overlapping dgn keupayaan crossing sgt cemerlang ke target man tanpa bergantung kpd a true winger. Strength and concentration adalah elemen yg amat penting apabila sistem ini digunakan dan Liverpool amat lemah dlm situasi ini oleh sbb itu Benitez adalah org yg akan fix that.

* Itu serba sedikit mengenai keupayaan gabungan RF/BR jika ia terjadi. Mengapa saya ckp gabungan?? Kerana saya tidak sanggup melihat org penting seperti Brendan angkat kaki selepas Suarez. Beliau org yg membawa Liverpool kembali ke UCL selepas bertahun, cungkil Raheem, mengolah keupayaan Coutinho, no dua dlm liga musim lepas then....... Walaubagaimana sekalipun IN BR I TRUST! And you? Keep support! YNWA!

Daniel Sturridge: Another injury setback

Daniel Sturridge: Another injury setback

Liverpool are sweating over Daniel Sturridge's fitness again after the striker suffered another injury scare on Monday.

The 25-year-old is understood to have withdrawn from training with a thigh problem, though whether it is serious, or a recurrence of the problem that began his injury-plagued season, is not yet known.

The Reds will monitor Sturridge over the next two days to determine his fitness but no early conclusions are being drawn.

Sturridge has not played for his club since August 31, after which he injured his thigh on England duty.

His first comeback was scuppered by a calf problem as he attempted to rejoin full training in October.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had earmarked Sunday's game against Crystal Palace for a potential return but may now be forced to reschedule again.

Rodgers' side, who also lost Sturridge's prolific former strike partner Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer, have laboured to 11th place in the Barclays Premier League.

The reliable output of the 'SAS' pairing has been replaced inadequately thus far by Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini, with the Reds scoring just 14 times in 11 league matches.

Sturridge's initial injury, following his appearance in the 1-0 win over Norway, caused a club versus country skirmish as Rodgers questioned England's recovery programme for the striker.

There will be no repeat on this occasion, with Sturridge not fit enough to join up with the Three Lions during the international break and instead managed at close quarters at Melwood.

Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow to their hopes of getting their season back on track with the news that Daniel Sturridge has suffered another thigh injury.

The 25-year-old has been out of action since August after picking up a thigh problem during England training in early September.

Sturridge was due to return at the end of October, but just days from his return pulled up with another injury. Reports on Tuesday night suggest lightning has struck twice.

Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool now face an anxious wait for results from Sturridge’s scan to determine at what cost the striker’s latest setback will be.

Liverpool had hoped to give Sturridge and Mario Balotelli only their second game together when the Reds travel to Crystal Palace this Sunday after positive news over the latter’s availability.

Liverpool have, reportedly, offered full-back Glen Johnson a new deal to remain at the club – on half his current wages.

The 30-year-old is out of contract next summer and widely expected to leave the club, having not been offered a new deal until now.

The Mirror claim Johnson “is currently on £120,000-a-week but, having lost his England place after suffering a loss of form and injuries, he is being asked to HALVE his money on a £60K per week, two-year deal.”

Johnson has been linked with a move to Italy most recently, with AS Roma said to be interested in the former Chelsea and Portsmouth right-back.

One of the most consistently below-par players at Anfield over the last two seasons, it would be a surprise to see Johnson remain at the club, even if it were on reduced terms.

Brendan Rodgers brought in Javier Manquillo on an initial loan deal in the summer, and has local lad Jon Flanagan returning from injury later next month. Both would be better options than Johnson.

Mario Balotelli (r): Antonio Conte (l) says he cannot change the striker

Mario Balotelli (r): Antonio Conte (l) says he cannot change the striker

Italy coach Antonio Conte admits he does not have the time to change striker Mario Balotelli.

The Azzurri boss called up the 24-year-old for the first time since he took charge in the summer, but the Liverpool forward sustained a hamstring injury in training which meant he returned to Merseyside without featuring in the Euro 2016 qualifier against Croatia.

Balotelli is expected to be fit to face Crystal Palace on Sunday, but club boss Brendan Rodgers is also finding fitting him into his team is not straightforward as the striker has yet to score in the Premier League since his #16million August transfer from AC Milan.

Rodgers has insisted Balotelli is working hard in training to adapt but Conte does not have the luxury of being involved on a daily basis.

However, he cast doubts over whether it is possible to make the player adjust and sounded a word of warning over his international career.

"I'm not so arrogant as to claim that I'm different from the great coaches, but the past tells us that they failed to change Balotelli," he told Raisport in the build-up to the friendly against Albania.

"It'll be up to the player, but I don't have much time and I need certain things."

Mario Balotelli is expected to be fit for Liverpool’s trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday, despite returning to Merseyside early after suffering a hamstring injury while with Italy.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 19, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli in action against Queens Park Rangers' Yun Suk-Young during the Premier League match at Loftus Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 24-year-old has returned to Merseyside for treatment but the injury is not expected to keep the striker sidelined for an extended period, explains The Guardian‘s Andy Hunter – providing there is no reaction in training this week.

He should also be joined in the squad by Daniel Sturridge, who has returned to full training after missing 14 games through two different injuries.

The England forward is unlikely to start the match after so long on the sidelines, so Balotelli’s fitness is a boost for boss Brendan Rodgers.

If Sturridge is in fact deemed fit enough to start, that could see the two of them partner each other up front and see a long awaited return to the midfield diamond shape that supporters have desired in recent weeks.

Balotelli looks more comfortable with a player up front alongside him, and hopefully Sturridge’s return can see an improvement to his form too. They partnered each other just once so far, on Balotelli’s debut at Tottenham – arguably The Reds’ best performance this season.

Rodgers should provide a fitness update the two at his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.
