Brendan Rodgers: Bookies don't rate us. We don't care

Brendan Rodgers: Bookies don't rate us. We don't care

Brendan Rodgers is trying to play down Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season, by simply saying ‘the bookies have written us off'.

Asked whether his side were contenders to be English champions in 2014/15, Rodgers replied: "Not according to the bookies we're not.

"I've seen some odds and I don't think we are even in the top four. I think people will look at Manchester City and Chelsea, with their squads.

"We probably arrived a year early to where we were but we will look to be up there challenging again this season.

"What happened last year counts for nothing, that's all gone now. The one thing that will carry on from that is the belief.

"Our aim is to be competitive. Like the top teams, we want to win a trophy. That would be an aim. In the league, it's about sustaining Champions League football.

"For that you want to arrive in fourth. Once you have consolidated that, you can look beyond that. That's certainly our aim this season."

And Rodgers believes teenage forward Raheem Sterling will just get better and better.

The 19-year-old was a member of England’s World Cup squad in Brazil and Rodgers added: "He is a wonderful talent. He is very stable and secure outside of his football life and you see the joy he plays the game with.

"The great thing about Raheem is he has a real mature head on his shoulders.

"He got 10 goals last year and we are looking at improving that ratio.

"He is one of a number of youngsters here who has so much potential to produce."

Saints boss Ronald Koeman

Saints boss Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman feels Liverpool are stronger than last season despite Luis Suarez’s £75m departure to Barcelona.

Koeman is preparing for his first game in charge of the Saints, which comes against Brendan Rodgers' side at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has splashed almost £50m on new talent, including Southampton trio Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren.

Koeman signed Shane Long and Florin Gardos on Thursday to replenish his squad following a summer exodus of high-profile players.

He said: "Luis Suarez is a great player who scored a lot for them.

"But if you look through the Liverpool squad they have so many good football players. Liverpool is much stronger than last season.

"It's a great start for us to play away against Liverpool, we know it's a tough one but everybody starts on nil.

"The players know how to win at Anfield, We are ready to play."

Koeman insisted he is pleased with his current squad, adding: "Everybody has to show their qualities and ambitions and I believe we are very well prepared.

"I know what team will play on Sunday. I know everything, but I have to tell first to the players what we like to do."

Watch Liverpool and Southampton start their Premier League season live on Sky Sports 1 HD on Sunday - coverage starts at 12:30pm.

Football is back. Dan Holland looks ahead to the new campaign.

The view of the pitch from the centre of the Paddock, Block PK6.

Finally, it’s here!

Thank heavens the summer is nearly over and the action begins this weekend. That’s not because I’ve had a rotten summer or because England had a dire World Cup – who’d have known Roy Hodgson would get shown up to be tactically inept – nor is it the fact that I’ve missed the M62 and all its Average Speed Cameras. It’s a mixture of the fact that I, for the first time in a long time, go to Anfield with both excitement and expectation.

Under Rafa it was good but it was mainly with expectation as the football at times was dull but now under Brendan we play incredible football and I agree with the little Northern Irishman, we can go one better.

The other reason is, I hate pre-season friendlies and transfer rumours, I am sick and tired of seeing we are linked with yet another player; this Summer we have been linked with everyone from Yaya Toure to half the Southampton team, I mean as if either of those will happen…. oh wait a minute!

What’s worse than a rumour is those tweets or statuses that read “I think we should sign ………… #lfc”. I say sack all the scouts who are trawling the world for talent, just read a 14 year old’s twitter account he knows who will take us onto the next level. The arrogance of Rodgers to not take into account who those millions of twitter user’s opinions. Does he think he knows his systems and who fits into those systems better than that young lad who plays on FIFA for hours and has won everything there is to win in the game online? Unbelievable!

Let’s just see who takes the field against Southampton and what the squad looks like when the window ‘slams shuts’ (in the words of Jim White). Don’t get me wrong I love opinions and the fact we all have different ones but let’s keep it sensible and based on facts, ie: what the line-up may be against Southampton based on players that are actually in our squad and where we will finish in the league with the squad we have. This isn’t FIFA or Football Manager it is real life and currently a damn sight more exciting. I didn’t watch the Dortmund friendly as I was coming back off holiday but the reports I read and the highlights I’ve seen fill me with further optimism, so here are my thoughts on the season ahead.

Transfers

I think on the whole the business done this summer has been very impressive. I think it is important to get players with Premier League experience if they are to play an important part immediately; yes you pay a premium but Lallana (when fit) and especially Lovren will be key from the start.

For my money, Lallana was the most impressive visitor to Anfield last year and his ability to play in the midfield or behind the strikers make him a perfect fit into our system. Lovren is a leader and an organiser and this showed immediately in the friendly against Dortmund, he alongside Sakho is for me our strongest pairing and will be a huge improvement on last year. Lambert is a no brainer at £4m; a local lad who loves the club, scored goals at this level and will be vital cover in the forward positions.

I know very little about Markovic and Manquillo but both fit the FSG and Rodgers mould perfectly. Emre Can is a huge talent from what I’ve seen and expect him to push Gerrard all the way for that role if indeed they don’t play alongside each other. The one that surprised me is the Origi signing, I wasn’t impressed by him at the World Cup thought he looked very average, he may improve but the fact he was immediately loaned out suggests we are confident of landing another centre forward as going into 4 competitions with just two forwards seems a little lightweight to me.

Premier League

Can we go one better? Can we even finish top 4?

These are two of the questions being asked by a lot of people both inside and outside the club and its fan base. The answer in my mind is definitely yes to the second question and maybe to the first. Yes we have lost Suarez but we have gained six others who can all be considered first teamers and not just squad players like Moses and Alberto were.

The competition have all strengthened but only one addition scares me. Fabregas at Chelsea – he is quality and a huge improvement on Fat Frank. Will Van Gaal and Pochettino make United and Spurs contenders? A resounding no on both counts. They will both be harder to beat but still short of being challengers for top 4 let alone the title.

Champions League

I think it is important to just enjoy our return to the competition and not have too many expectations. We have a number of key individuals who are yet to play in the Champions League and again experience is vital. Gerrard, Sakho and Lovren will be vital to ensure Sterling, Henderson and co. cope with these huge occasions. I believe success will be to progress from the group stage, anything more than this has to be considered a bonus.

Domestic Cups

As much as it pains me to say it as it goes against all my principles, I believe the League Cup should be used to play players like Brad Jones, Jack Robinson, Jordan Rossiter, Suso et al. As much as we now have a stronger squad we shouldn’t be risking Sturridge, Coutinho and Mignolet on a wet Tuesday evening in Scunthorpe. The FA Cup is a different matter and should be treated with the respect it deserves and I for one would love a day in the capital next May.

Roll on Sunday, I am like a kid at Christmas ahead of the season opener and let’s just hope we can all stay optimistic at half past three on Sunday. I’m predicting a 3-0 victory; Sturridge, Coutinho and Lovren with the goals.

The new season is here and with it, the 5Times podcast returns – the first episode of 2014/15 featuring former players Mark Wright and Ian St. John joining host Jason McAteer.

podcast_5times

A lot has happened since the 5Times co. discussed all things LFC; with this pre-season having seen eight new signings and eight friendly matches.

Much of the discussion revolves around those new signings, especially in defence – where two new full-backs and a centre-back have arrived, something that St. John says Liverpool really needed.

Wright, a centre-back himself who played for Southampton, discusses the signing of Dejan Lovren in particular.

“What I like by what Brendan’s done, [adding] competition for places,” says Wright. “Because before there wasn’t competition for places, for the whole of the back line – round holes, square pegs.”

As ever, you can listen to the full show below:

Divock Origi: Scores against Caen's French goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre

Divock Origi: Scores against Caen's French goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre

On-loan Liverpool striker Divock Origi netted the winner as Lille moved to the top of the Ligue 1 standings ahead of the weekend matches with a somewhat fortunate 1-0 win at promoted Caen.

The game hinged on an incident midway through the second half when Caen defender Dennis Appiah was sent off for bringing Origi down inside the area, and from the resulting penalty the Belgium striker slotted home for the only goal of the game.

That was the first goal of the new season for the 19-year-old, who was sold by Lille to Liverpool this summer before being immediately loaned back to the French club, and earned his side their opening victory.

It also lifted Lille to the top of the standings on four points, although several clubs will expect to move back above them this weekend.

Caen can feel hard done by not to have taken anything from the match, however, having created most of the chances.

They twice went close in the opening 20 minutes, Ngolo Kante firing just inches wide of the post before Florian Raspentino saw his fight-footed effort hit the side-netting.

Lille, who finished third last season, fashioned their only opening of the first half in the 32nd minute but Marvin Martin saw his 20-yard effort fizz just over after latching onto a lay-off from Florent Balmont.

Caen were back on the attack at the start of the second half with Jordan Adeoti bringing a save out of Vincent Enyeama with a long-range shot and substitute Bengali-Fode Koita only just failing to convert a superb headed effort, with Enyeama beaten.

The home side could not find the breakthrough, though, and they were made to pay the penalty in the 68th minute as Lille notched from 12 yards to decide the match.

Appiah's clumsy-looking challenge on Origi earned him both an early bath and Lille a penalty, and Origi made no mistake with the subsequent spot-kick.

The 10 men of Caen tried to push for a late leveller but were twice denied by good stops from Enyeama, who flew across goal to keep out Raspentino's 25-yard drive in the 83rd minute before doing similar to save from Adeoti two minutes later.

Premier League pundits have written off Liverpool’s hopes of a top four finish ahead of the new season.

As ever, each media organisation is offering their pundits’ predictions ahead of the new season.

Each of BBC Sport, The Guardian and The Telegraph’s cumulative average predictions has Liverpool placed outside of the top four.

BBC Sport’s overall predicted top four is:

1. Chelsea

2. Man City

3. Man United

4. Arsenal

New BBC pundit Phil Neville there predicting United to go from seventh to second, just like Liverpool last season.

Match of the Day commentator Conor McNamara explains:

“I left Liverpool out of my top four for the following reasons: Steven Gerrard performed miracles last season but he’s a year older now, the additional workload in the Champions League will affect their league form, no individual new signing can replace Suarez and there will be more pressure on the players because of the added expectation from the fans after last season.”

Meanwhile, The Guardian writers’ average predicted finish for Liverpool is fifth.

Andy Hunter writes:

Much depends on Lovren, the discipline of the three midfielders in front of him, Steven Gerrard’s reaction to what he described as “probably the worst three months of my life”, the continued upward trajectory of Raheem Sterling and the business Liverpool can or cannot conduct before close of play on 1 September.

Finally, only two of The Telegraph‘s nine pundits place Liverpool in their top four (Henry Winter and Chris Bascombe).

Of course, not many (see: none) of them had Liverpool to finish in the top four, let alone the top two, last season either.

Saloman Kalou: Future remains uncertain

Saloman Kalou: Future remains uncertain

Sky Sports understands Salomon Kalou is considering offers from the Middle East as he looks for his next career move.

The 29-year-old former Chelsea forward has been targeted by several clubs in Qatar & UAE in recent weeks but the player remains very keen on a move back to the Premier League, with likes of Arsenal and Liverpool thought to be monitoring his situation.

He also turned down a move to Roma after rejecting their proposal while there are still possibilities with Galatasaray or Fenerbahce.

Lille’s coach René Girard confirmed that the situation will be resolved soon, once Kalou has found a suitor that fits his requirements.

“Salomon has an agreement to leave, but he is not really disturbed,” Girard told L’Equipe.

“He wanted to play the opening match of Ligue 1 against Metz, but I preferred him to go on preparation peacefully.”

Adam Lallana (r): Misses out against Southampton, but Rickie Lambert may feature

New Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana will miss the visit of former club Southampton on Sunday as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Fellow summer signing Lazar Markovic (ankle) will also not be fit but both players are expected to return to full training next week.

Striker Rickie Lambert and centre-back Dejan Lovren, who also both moved from the Saints this summer, are available but defenders Jon Flanagan (knee) and Daniel Agger (calf) are sidelined by injuries.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman could hand out a number of debuts when his side travel to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Only new defensive acquisition Florin Gardos (hamstring) is a certain absentee, with midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin in contention despite ongoing rumours of a move to Tottenham.

Shane Long, signed on Thursday from Hull, is available and will offer competition to fellow new recruit Graziano Pelle up front while academy graduate Lloyd Isgrove will be hopeful his pre-season showings could be enough to see him handed a first Barclays Premier League appearance.
