Raheem Sterling:

Raheem Sterling:

Brendan Rodgers has not ruled out Raheem Sterling playing for the England Under-21s next summer but warns: "Too many miles on the clock as a youngster will break him."

The Liverpool boss is keen to draw a line under a story which has dominated the headlines this week; Sterling started England's clash with Estonia on the bench after he complained of feeling tired.

"I want to move on from the Sterling saga for the sake of the kid," said Rodgers.

"It's been grossly unfair how Raheem has been criticised for something he did not say. He's back here in a secure environment.

"Roy and I have exchanged messages, we want to put this to bed and move on, and concentrate on looking after a huge talent.

"We are club and country here, not club v country. Liverpool are no barrier to England."

Reports on Friday morning suggested that Sterling was keen to play in the European Under-21 Championship next summer but the final decision is likely to lie with Rodgers.

"Sterling is eligible to play for the Under-21s and we'll assess that as the season goes on.

"But too many miles on the clock as a youngster will break him and his career could be finished at 26/27. We need to protect them."

Brendan Rodgers‘ pre-QPR press conference on Friday afternoon saw the Liverpool boss defend Raheem Sterling, calling treatment of the teenager this week “grossly unfair”.

rodgers_presser

“It’s been grossly unfair how Sterling has been put in the back pages for something he clearly didn’t say,” explained the boss.

Speaking about the player himself, Rodgers praised: “He’s a wonderful talent, he’s a kid we’ve brought up to be honest and responsible. All he said was that he was tired [not refusing to play].

“I’ve been very fortunate to work with Raheem. From the pre-season trip as a 17-year-old, he’s been incredible for me.

“He’s [Sterling] maturing into a great young man, now 19, he’s responsible, honest. Lots of players will play when they don’t feel right.

“He’s back here in a secure environment. The last week shook him a wee bit but he was brilliant in training this morning.”

On the subject of ‘club vs country’, Rodgers said: “I take pride in players playing for their countries. I see it as an earmark for how we’re developing our players.

“Liverpool is very much club and country, not club vs. country. I will continue to work for all nations and all our players to progress.”

On his relationship with England boss Roy Hodgson, Rodgers said: “Me and Roy Hodgson have exchanged messages, but we want to put this to bed. Sterling is a huge talent, we all want him to do well.”

Speaking of keeping players fresh, with seven games in 21 days now for the Reds’, Rodgers said: “As a manager it’s key to have your best players playing. They can’t play every game at the top level – in particular young players.”

“Too many miles on the clock of a young player will break him.

“It doesn’t surprise me, the number of players who are tired given how many games they have to play.”

Rodgers was quizzed on the club’s preference for giving players a second recovery day, explaining his beliefs “to make players better”.

“A second day recovery is a technical session,” he explained – saying that players aren’t sat at home watching Sky Sports with their feet up!

Manchester United: Backed to win high-scoring game at West Brom

Manchester United: Backed to win high-scoring game at West Brom

Paul Merson has predicted weekend wins for Man City, Arsenal, West Ham, Chelsea, Everton, Southampton, Liverpool, Stoke and Man United.

Manchester City v Tottenham, Saturday 12.45pm

I didn't fancy Tottenham to beat Southampton the other week, but they won and played well.

However, this is a major step up to go to Man City. They took a while to break down Aston Villa in their last game, but they keep on probing and probing and never panic. You never see Man City hit the long ball or make bad decisions and they keep going until the end.

For that reason I don't see anything but a Man City win. They are a top team, right up there with Chelsea, and I really fancy them to win this game (and I'm saying that with my football head on... it's nothing to do with the fact I used to play for Arsenal!)

PAUL PREDICTS: 3-0

Arsenal v Hull City

Arsenal have only won two Premier League games all season and that isn't good enough. For that reason I think this is a must-win game against a Hull side that had a good result before the internationals and probably didn't want a two-week break.

You always want to play again when you've won. I have to go for Arsenal to win, but I think it will be a hard game for them.

I do think the injury to Mesut Ozil might actually help the team. I don't think he's been playing well, and any other player would have been dropped if they'd played like he has over the last four months.

He's probably been playing unfit so it could be a blessing to give him a rest - and it gives the manager an easy decision to make.

PAUL PREDICTS: 3-1

Burnley v West Ham

I don't see Burnley getting their first win here and I think they're struggling, I really do.

They pulled up trees to get promotion last season, but now the two main players who got them up - Danny Ings and Sam Vokes - are injured and you have to feel sorry for them. I hope this season doesn't turn into a damp squib, but it's so hard with two centre-forwards injured.

I think West Ham are in their stride at the moment, Diafra Sakho is scoring goals for fun and they are probably more of a threat in their away games these days because of the pace they have. I think West Ham will win.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-3

Crystal Palace v Chelsea

This is a real test for Chelsea, especially when you consider what happened last year when John Terry scored an own goal and they lost 1-0. That was probably where they lost the title last year.

People think Chelsea should beat Crystal Palace - and they should - but it is a hard place to go. Palace have pace on the flanks, and the Chelsea full-backs like to bomb forward so a lot depends on who has the most bottle. Will Branislav Ivanovic and César Azpilicueta be forced to track back all day long?

I expect Chelsea to narrowly win it - but the atmosphere will be absolutely rocking there!

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2

Everton v Aston Villa

Everton are fourth bottom and desperately need to start winning games. There's a lot of pressure on them because they spent a fair amount of money in the close season and they've started poorly.

Villa will go there and make it very difficult indeed for them - they will want a draw to break their losing run because they've had some nightmare fixtures.

Against Man City they hung on for so long before getting ground down at the end and I think they might lose again at Goodison Park.

Villa have done great and have been embarrassed nowhere, but there are games coming up they are more likely to win.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-0

Newcastle v Leicester City

This is one of those games where the Newcastle fans will turn up expecting to win.

They drew their last game with Swansea, which was a bit of a bonus because a lot of people didn't expect them to get anything there, but the expectations will be different here because they're at home to a promoted side. I know Leicester are doing great, but the pressure will be on the home players.

I think it's a hard game because Leicester will fancy their chances. Newcastle will bomb forward and could get caught on the break by the pace of Jamie Vardy - so this could be a wide-open and gung-ho game.

A draw is no good for Newcastle, but I see that happening.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-2

Southampton v Sunderland

Sunderland had a good result in their last game against Stoke and they are hard to beat. They have only lost one game all season, they keep things very tight and then they go from there.

But I am just going to go for a narrow Southampton win at home. Graziano Pelle scored for Italy in midweek, so he will be flying high and I think they will just about sneak this one.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1

QPR v Liverpool, Sunday 1.30pm, Sky Sports 1

Harry Redknapp is a great manager who plays expansive football and goes out to entertain - which is the way to play - but at the moment this QPR team need to play 10 behind the ball.

It's not Harry's way, and rightly so, but I just think their players need a bit more confidence.

They will give Liverpool a game, but I can't see them winning. If you look at Liverpool this season, the best game they've played was against Tottenham when they were outstanding.

Who played in that game? Daniel Sturridge. He hasn't played in any games since and I think that's been the problem. If you take Sturridge out now Suarez has gone then you're going to struggle. If Real Madrid took Ronaldo and Bale out of their team they wouldn't be the same team.

I just think it's caught up with them and when Sturridge comes back they will be a real force again.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1

Stoke City v Swansea City, Sunday 4pm, Sky Sports 1

I expected Swansea to beat Newcastle in their last game, but they couldn't manage to do it. Stoke had a shocker in their last game as well, losing at Sunderland.

Both teams need to get back to winning ways, but I rarely go against Stoke at home.

This will be a good game and I expect it to be wide open.

People ask me if the Britannia is a less intimidating place to go nowadays and maybe because Mark Hughes wants the players to get the ball down and play they are not as "in your face" as the old Stoke.

The place doesn't have the same intimidation about it and teams don't have to defend long balls and long throws like they used to, but there is still a great atmosphere.

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1

West Brom v Manchester United, Monday 8pm, Sky Sports 1

I think this will be a really good game to watch. At the moment Man United are a team that has to go out and score goals because one goal isn't enough for them to win a football match.

I don't know when we'll next see Man United come off the pitch having won 1-0. It makes good TV, but you ain't going to win anything doing that. Attacking teams win games, but a good defence wins championships; it's very rare that you see a team win the league by scoring 100 and letting in 80.

As a neutral they are the team to watch because the forward line is as good as anybody's in world football, and I think there will be loads of goals on Monday night. It won't be 0-0, that's for sure...

PAUL PREDICTS: 2-4

Manchester City: Backed to get better of Tottenham

Manchester City: Backed to get better of Tottenham

Mark Holmes takes on rapper and Arsenal fan Wretch 32 in this week's prediction challenge, with the Gunners among the teams backed by both men.

This season, our man Mark will take on someone from the world of music or celebrity every Friday to predict the outcome of the 10 Premier League games that weekend.

Every correct result is worth one point, while every correct scoreline is worth three points. We will keep a tally throughout the season to see how Mark fares against all of our guests.

After a big 16-5 win before the international break, Mark is now ahead for the season with 44 points, six more than the guests' 38.

Manchester City v Tottenham

Mark: Tottenham's struggles against the top clubs are well-documented, and I don't see them causing a shock here despite Manchester City's inconsistent start to the season at the Etihad. 2-0

Wretch 32: With Tottenham off form at the moment and Man City having such a strong squad of players and firing upfront with Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero I only can see one side winning here. 2-0

Arsenal v Hull City

Mark: Arsenal's defeat at Chelsea before the international break was a reminder of how far off maintaining a title challenge they still are, but they're still my tip to finish third this season. They'll be too strong for Hull. 3-1

Wretch 32: This could go either way with Hull scoring in every game so far and Arsenal not looking particularly sound at the back. Hull are bound to score but I believe Arsenal having the home advantage will come out on top. 2-1

Burnley v West Ham

Mark: Burnley got a good point at Leicester in their last game but they desperately need to start winning some games to give themselves a chance of survival. West Ham will make it difficult for them, but I think Sean Dyche's side can get their season really up and running in this one. 2-1

Wretch 32: I think this will be a low-scoring game. Burnley will make it hard for West Ham but I think the Hammers will win by a single goal. 3-1

Crystal Palace v Chelsea

Mark: There's not much left to be said about Chelsea. They're clearly the strongest side in the league, it will be a huge shock if they don't canter to the title, and there really aren't many games you can see them dropping points in while everyone is fit. 0-2

Wretch 32: Chelsea are on fire and unbeaten this season, and their sheer power and quality will be to much for Crystal Palace to handle. 0-3

Everton v Aston Villa

Mark: Everton haven't won at home in the Premier League this season, while Villa have already won two away games. The table at the bottom of the page shows Paul Lambert's side have really exceeded my expectations so far this season but I have to go against them again unfortunately. The Blues haven't become a bad side overnight. 2-1

Wretch 32: Everton haven't won at home this season and Aston Villa have lost three on the bounce. This game can go either way but I think it will end up a high-scoring draw. 2-2

Newcastle v Leicester City

Mark: Leicester are another side that have proven me wrong most weekends this season, which is a testament to how well they've done to get nine points from such a difficult start. Like the game at Goodison, no result would surprise me here, but I'm backing Newcastle to get their first home win. 1-0

Wretch 32: Newcastle don't look a potent side at all this season and I can't even see them winning this one. I can see this ending in a stalemate. 0-0

Southampton v Sunderland

Mark: Sunderland got their first win of the season against Stoke before the international break but following it up with another at St Mary's is a big ask. Southampton have managed their transition extremely well and look set for another very good season. 3-1

Wretch 32: I expected the Saints to struggle this season but they've had a decent start. A home win looks the most likely when looking on form but I think this will end up a draw. 1-1

QPR v Liverpool

Mark: Everybody is talking about the impact Luis Suarez's exit has had on Liverpool, but losing Daniel Sturridge to injury has been just as big a blow. With the England striker set to return to the fold here, I expect a much-improved performance from the Reds. 0-2

Wretch 32: I believe Liverpool have the strength and depth to roll out a win in this one. 0-1

Stoke City v Swansea City

Mark: Stoke have struggled against teams that sit deep against them but looked very good on the counter-attack. Swansea's possession-based style should suit them, therefore, but the Potters are making too many errors at the back. There could be goals in this one. 2-2

Wretch 32: With a great start Swansea have had and a poor start Stoke have had, Swansea are looking the most likely winners in this one. 0-2

West Brom v Manchester United

Mark: If my predictions had come true this season, Manchester United would have won every game. That's not because I'm overly optimistic about them, it's because they've had a relatively easy start from which they should have taken a lot more points. They should win this one, too, but what should happen rarely does in the Premier League. 2-3

Wretch 32: With Man United suspect in defence I can see West Brom scoring but with Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Angel Di Maria I can see United creating many opportunities to win this one. 1-2

Five from Wretch 32

How did you come to support your club and what are your favourite memories from your time as a fan?

I started supporting Arsenal because of Ian Wright. I can remember watching the North London derby against Tottenham on TV with my dad who's a big fan of Tottenham Hotspur, and seeing this player from the opposition side, Arsenal, causing so much havoc playing with so much passion and energy made me a instant fan of player and club.

Who have been your biggest heroes during your time supporting the club?

My heroes were Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Ian Wright. I was a huge fan of Wright. I wanted to be just like him; I even went to the extreme of asking the barber to give me a bald head once.

What do you make of the current team? What are your hopes for the season?

I'm pretty happy with the current squad of players we have. I do think we're missing a world class striker, though, someone who's already developed, who can get us the goals we need to win the title.

At the moment we haven't got the best of luck going for us with the injuries but I'm hoping now that Theo Walcott's back we can challenge for the title.

Everyone has a soft spot for another team. Who's yours and why?

Mine would be Tottenham as I'm from there.

What's going on for you at the moment?

At the moment I'm in mid-campaign doing promotion for my new single '6 Words' available on November 16 and working on new material for my album dropping early next year.

Wretch 32 will release new single '6 Words' on November 16 through Ministry Of Sound. wretch32.com

PL Predictions: City and Gunners tipped

Unknown   at  18:08  No comments
