Brendan Rodgers has hailed the return of captain Steven Gerrard from injury, saying his influence in the team is “critical”.

Gerrard came on as a second-half substitute for Liverpool in their 2-0 victory over Hull City on New Years Day.

It was the midfielder’s first action since limping off the pitch at Anfield with a hamstring injury during last month’s 4-1 win over West Ham.

“He’s worked tirelessly to get back having been out,” Rodgers told the club’s official website. “We just wanted to get him some minutes on the pitch.

“He wasn’t ready to start the game, but his influence back in the team gives us another player of real quality.

“Over the course of the next 10 days, he’ll get right up to speed and it’s great to have him back.”

Gerrard could start for Liverpool in this Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie with Oldham Athletic at home to help get him match-fit again for the second half of the Reds’ Premier League season.

Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League after 20 games, six points off league leaders Arsenal.

However, out of teams in the top eight, Liverpool have only to travel to Manchester United in the remainder of the campaign.

Rodgers will also be hoping to bring in fresh faces to reinforce his first-team during the January transfer window.

He added, “We’ve just got to see what’s available. We know that we would like to strengthen the squad for the run in.

“So we just need to see what’s available and what that’s going to cost, basically. There’s no point in just stockpiling players for the sake of it. We need to bring in players of quality and hopefully we can do that.”

Brendan Rodgers called the 2-0 victory over Hull City on New Years Day Liverpool’s ‘best win of the season,’ because of the fact they won when they were tired and not at their best.

The biggest difference between Liverpool and the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in recent years is the ability to win ugly. In other words, winning games you don’t deserve to, or are under par in.

Under Rafa Benitez in the mid to late 00s there were signs of it at Liverpool, but even then there were too many dropped points at Anfield. Their run of home draws in the 2008/09 season cost them the league title without a shadow of a doubt.

Since the Spaniard left, the Reds’ ability to turn draws into wins has been really poor. Whether it be under Roy Hodgson or even Kenny Dalglish, they were far too many frustrating afternoons full of missed chances and a lack of ruthlessness.

They would often dominate matches and play lovely football but, ultimately, they would get nothing out of the game.

The problems still lingered in Rodgers’ first season at the club, with draws against Stoke, Newcastle and West Ham all games they should’ve won, among others.

Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Hull had the potential to be one of those afternoons, but Liverpool came through with flying colours, showing signs that they may have started to add more grit to their game.

After two gruelling away trips to Manchester City and Chelsea in the space of four days, the players looked understandably tired and lacklustre in the opening stages.

If this had been the Liverpool of the last five years, there is every chance they would’ve limped to a 0-0 draw, damaging their Champions League qualification chances in the process. There appears to be a new-found belief in this current crop, however. Particularly at Anfield.

Daniel Agger scored at a vital time- past Reds sides have often failed to score in the first half, putting too much pressure on themselves after the break- and it gave Liverpool a bit of breathing space in front of 45,000 fairly anxious and hungover fans.

Luis Suarez‘s sublime free-kick soon after the interval effectively put the game to bed, and it was another example of finding the net at a pivotal point in a game.

In truth it was a pretty average display, but when you come away with maximum points does it really matter? No player looked in top gear, but they got the job done and, vitally, stopped a run of two straight defeats.

This season, with so many sides battling for the top spots in the Premier League, regularly notching up three points is absolutely vital. The likes of City, Chelsea and Arsenal are almost winning every game at the moment- they are all winning ugly, particularly Arsenal- so not dropping silly points is paramount.

Look at United, for example. One slip up against Tottenham, all their rivals win and suddenly they are really on the back foot in their quest for a top four finish.

The win away to Spurs, the home victory against United and the thrashings of Norwich and West Brom were all terrific performances, but I agree with Rodgers; this was Liverpool’s most pleasing win of the season.

If they can continue to win these scrappy games from now until May, it could make all the difference in terms of where they finish the season.

Are the Reds finally mastering the art of winning ugly? Or is it a one-0ff?

Liverpool 2-0 Hull City

Misi balas dendam tercapai.

Jujur saya cakap sepanjang setengah jam, suasana kemurungan melanda sebab Liverpool tak nampak lansung nak menyerang. Hanya sekali peluang itupun gol Suarez tak dikira keran curi ayam.

Keyakinan depan gol kena ada sebab itulah kita nampak pemain paling berkeyakinan depan gol macam Suarez pun ikut-ikut peluang tak banyak tapi sentuhan gol mereka memamg hebat.

Suarez menjadi sasaran tindakan agresif pemain Hull.

Saya nak sentuh sedikit tentang Aspas.

Moses saya tak kisah sangat kerana posisi belia sangat terhad dek kerana kehebatan Sterling.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is hoping the New Year's Day win over Hull City can kick-start a successful 2014 for his side.

Goals from Daniel Agger and Luis Suarez either side of half-time ensured that Brendan Rodgers' men began the year by returning to winning ways following back-to-back 2-1 defeats against title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.

The three points meant that Liverpool returned to the top four and, although Henderson admitted it was tougher than they would have liked, the 23-year-old acknowledged the need for opening the year with a win.

"It was important to get the year off to a good start," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"Maybe we didn't play as well as we have done in certain games when we have won by four or five, but we showed we can grind a result out when we're not at our best.

"We could have had more goals. I should have scored with the chance I had when I dragged it wide.

"And their 'keeper made a couple of good saves from Philippe [Coutinho] but the most important thing was getting the three points and we're delighted with the result.

"Our aim is to make Anfield a fortress - to make it really difficult for teams when they come here.

"We've been doing that and hopefully we can keep doing that and pick up points away too."

Henderson also spoke of the testing Christmas period which saw his side play three games in the space of a week, admitting that the defeats away to Manchester City and Chelsea were disappointing.

"This period hasn't been too bad for us but it could have been a little bit better," he said.

"I think we can't be too disheartened with the performances against Man City and Chelsea. I felt we played well and definitely deserved something out of both games.

"I thought we matched them, if not were better than them, in the two games. We just didn't get the bit of luck that we deserved.

"We had to forget about all that and put things right against Hull. It was very important to get back to winning ways after those two defeats.

"We're back in the top four and I definitely believe we can stay there. Now we've got to keep it going and try to kick on for the rest of the season."

Liverpool's classy 2-0 win over Hull City was their finest performance of the campaign so far, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

Daniel Agger's headed opener and Luis Suarez's 20th goal of the season proved too much for the tired visitors as the Reds stormed back from back-to-back defeats to climb back into the top four.

"I said to the players afterwards that I thought that was our best win of the season," said Rodgers.

"In a lot of games we've been vibrant with great energy, scored goals and performed well, as well as won.

"But on the back of the games that we've had over this period - and to play with a lot of the same players against a team that won their last Premier League game 6-0 - we knew we were going to have to tough it out and dig in.

"We might not have always been at our best, but we got two great goals, had other opportunities and actually restricted Hull to no shots on target.

"I'm very, very pleased with today because it was a great victory for us."

Suarez's free-kick meant he became the joint-fastest player in Premier League history to reach 20 goals, achieving the feat in 15 games. Andy Cole also got to 20 on New Year's Day 1994 while with Newcastle.

"Today was very much about the team. Luis will, of course, always get the plaudits because he's a world-class player," added Rodgers.

"Nine out of 10 players would not have played. He had a real bad knock on the top of his foot from the Chelsea game. I know, having managed and worked with players, that most players wouldn't have played with what he had today.

"He had strapping on it and he put himself out there for the team yet again. That's why he gets the goals that he does, because he's so determined.

"But it was very much a team effort. It was a great header from Daniel Agger from the corner and that set us off."

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to celebrate the Reds’ 2-0 victory over Hull City to kick-start 2014 with a win.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side went into the game at Anfield off the back of consecutive defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea at the back end of December.

A first half header from Daniel Agger and superb free-kick from Luis Suarez early in the second sunk Steve Bruce’s men.

The result lifts Liverpool back up to fourth in the Premier League, with Everton only managing a draw at Stoke City.

Elsewhere, there were victories for Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The game also saw the return of Steven Gerrard from injury, who replaced an uninspiring Iago Aspas in the second half, whilst Kolo Toure looked exciting as a second-half replacement for Glen Johnson at right-back.

It was Liverpool’s first 2-0 victory under Brendan Rodgers, as attentions turn to Sunday’s FA Cup third round meeting against Oldham Athletic at Anfield.

We’ve rounded up a selection of reaction tweets from fans below. Let us know your thoughts on the result in the comments, or on Twitter @thisisanfield.

A first half header from Daniel Agger and second half free-kick screamer from Luis Suarez earned Liverpool three points in their New Years’ Day encounter with Hull at Anfield.

Match Summary

Liverpool went into the game off the back of two consecutive defeats between Christmas and New Year at Manchester City and Chelsea, leaving them fifth in the Premier League.

With Joe Allen and Mamadou Sakho having picked up injuries during Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea last month, Iago Aspas and Aly Cissokho came into the starting line-up.

Steven Gerrard was named amongst the substitutes for the first time since picking up a hamstring injury against West Ham in December.

The game took a while to get going with a sluggish, slow-paced New Years’ hangover feel to it.

Aspas looked pysically weak and struggled to get into the game, whilst Luis Suarez had many moments of frustrations, with himself, his teammates and referee Craig Pawson.

Liverpool finally took the lead, which they would take into the break, on 36 minutes when Daniel Agger rose to crash home a strong header from Philippe Coutinho‘s corner.

Five minutes into the second half Liverpool looked to finish off their opponents when Luis Suarez expertly hit home a free-kick from just outside the box.

In another masterclass of the Uruguayan’s brilliance, Suarez rocketed an unstoppable shot into the left-top-corner, leaving Allan McGregor in the Hull goal with no chance.

Stunning from the 26-year-old.

The second half saw the introductions of Kolo Toure, Gerrard and Victor Moses as the Reds held strongly onto their lead.

Coutinho had several chances to add a third for Liverpool, but a succession of shots sailed high, wide and saved.

It was Liverpool’s first 2-0 win under Brendan Rodgers.

The result moves Rodgers’ side back up to fourth in the league, with Everton having drawn 1-1 at Stoke City.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City.

Next up is the visit of Oldham Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 3pm), before the league trip to Stoke on Sunday, 12th January.
