Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom has described the experience of representing the Reds against Manchester United at Old Trafford as 'surreal'.

Wisdom and his teammates travel to the home of our rivals on Wednesday evening for a mouth-watering Capital One Cup third-round tie against the Red Devils.

The 20-year-old played the full 90 minutes when Liverpool were beaten 2-1 on the same ground last season, and the fixture was an experience the No.47 is unlikely to forget.

"It's a bit surreal, to be honest," Wisdom told Liverpoolfc.com. "Playing at Old Trafford last season, it's like you're in a bubble; there are 75,000 fans. It's a good experience.

"You've just got to go there, apply yourself, prepare well for it, give all that you can and come off with no regrets - thinking maybe I should have done that or this.

"Leave everything that you have on the pitch and hopefully it will be the good side. We're prepared to defend because Manchester United are a good team."

Wisdom featured for the final 11 minutes when England's two most successful clubs last met - a matter of just three weeks ago, on a day when Liverpool were 1-0 winners at Anfield.

"Coming on against Manchester United is always great, even to be on the bench," said the versatile defender.

"It's Manchester United - you look up to them and you see some of the great players they have. To come on and keep the 1-0 victory was even better.

"We try to prove a point every week because we want to impress the fans and we want to keep climbing up the table by getting as many points as possible.

"With it being Manchester United, everyone is up for it. I wouldn't say slightly more but there's a bit of rivalry between the two teams, and it's a cup game so it will be back and forth.

"Hopefully there will be goals in it and it will be an exciting match. Hopefully we can come out on the good side of it."

David Moyes' side enter the tie - the fifth time the Reds and United have faced off in this competition - on the back of a 4-1 derby thrashing by Manchester City.

Nevertheless, Wisdom is aware of the difficult challenge standing in the way of his team and the fourth round.

The England U21 captain said: "Every game is always difficult because we see in the Premier League the qualities every team has.

"They are the champions from last season and they have got some great players, but we're looking forward to the challenge. Hopefully we can go away and get the win in the cup.

"Every game is important, whether it's the cup or the league, a friendly or a reserve game. No matter what game you're playing, you've got to go in with the right attitude and show your desire to win.

"If you do that, hopefully we can get the result that we want. Every game is as important as any."

He may be an enigma wrapped up in a world-class player, but the return of Luis Suarez is just what Liverpool need right now, says Joseph Copeland.

JAKARTA, INDONESIA - Saturday, July 20, 2013: Liverpool supporters' banner about Luis Suarez 'To Err is human, to sell him is stupid' before a preseason friendly at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The other day I was watching a collegiate soccer match that pitted an undefeated powerhouse versus a clearly overmatched “cupcake” opponent. The game was ripe for a “David versus Goliath” type of performance. Despite the clear discrepancy in overall talent, the weaker school boasted the most gifted player on the pitch. He was playing in the centre of the park for his team, and he was absolutely bossing the game on both ends. His splendid passing was making even the most mediocre of players look like superstars. He bagged 2 goals and 2 assists in what ended up being a 4-2 upset victory for the underdogs.

The aforementioned story is a prime example of the significant impact a talented individual can have on a football team. This idea might sound obvious to casual fans, but being talented and being a “game changer” are two different things. The Messi’s, Ronaldo’s, Ibrahimovic’s, Pirlo’s and Gerrard’s are game changers. They have the uncanny ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and drag their team across the finish line. The last 9 months has seen Brazilian starlet Philippe Coutinho slowly taking over that role at Anfield. Yes Daniel Sturridge has been outstanding bagging goals galore for the Reds, but it has been Coutinho that has been the constant driving force for Liverpool.

Having watched the last 2 Premier League matches for a Liverpool, a 2-2 draw with Swansea followed by a woeful 1-0 defeat to Southampton, it is clear that if Coutinho is missing, so is the creative spark for Liverpool. Once he was taken off in South Wales the Reds lost all their bite in attack and had to claw to salvage a draw. Saturday saw Coutinho miss the first of what will be at least 6 weeks’ worth of matches as the result of a severe shoulder injury. Without their brilliant architect, Liverpool were listless all day. Sturridge did not have the service he has become accustomed to. Steven Gerrard looked every bit of his 33 years as he struggled to simply maintain possession of the ball. Iago Aspas, who was deployed in the No. 10 role, failed to impress yet again and questions must soon be asked about the Spaniard if they aren’t already. The loss of Coutinho to injury cannot result in the loss of all sense of cutting edge in the final third. Liverpool must find a player that can turn a drab 0-0 match into a 1-0 win as the result of a mind boggling, slaloming run, or an incisive through ball that finally breaks a determined defense. They need a player that has the confidence and ability to turn a game on its head. Look no further than a certain controversial Uruguayan. Luis Suarez has finally completed his 10 game suspension as the result of biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic (Let’s be honest, we’ve all thought about it at some point haven’t we?).

All kidding aside, having had to endure the mind numbing daily drama that was Suarez’s summer transfer saga, it might be hard for some fans to instantly welcome him back with open arms. They will point to his lack of discipline; accuse him of betraying the club, or they will present the tremendous record Liverpool have posted in his absence (7 W 2 D 1 L) as a few valid reasons for why he is “not needed”. Not needed? Suarez was the best player in the Premier League last season, yes he was better than that new Madrid boy. When he is on form, he is a top 5 player in the world. For a club that is striving to reach the summit of English football once more, how is a player of Suarez’s ilk NOT needed? Liverpool are a vastly improved team overall from last year’s squad, which relied heavily on goals from their captivating No. 7 to salvage results. Now, there is more depth and balance in the squad. Sturridge has taken over the mantle as the goal poacher while the rest of the first XI have settled into their respective roles with aplomb. The excitement and hope brought on by strong start to the season that saw Liverpool rise to the top of the Premier League standings for a few weeks, has quickly dissipated following the two mediocre performances that have looked eerily similar to recent years. Just when you think those days are behind us they come back faster than Manchester City whips out the chequebook for a star player.

Wednesday’s Capital One Cup encounter with a reeling Manchester United side is massive for the psyche of the team. Should Brendan Rodgers’ men come out lifeless again, and Liverpool get beaten handily, things could quickly snow ball downhill. However, should Liverpool put in a good performance, regardless of the result; it would go a long way towards restoring the positivity that was so abundant only a few weeks ago. Looking beyond United, Liverpool are two games into a 6 game stretch in the league that features Swansea, Southampton, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Brom. Prior to the debacle in Wales, fans and media pundits alike were predicting a possible 15-18 points from those games. Now, having only garnered 1 from the first 6, things must change, and quickly. Suarez could be the man that triggers that change. Whether you love him or hate him, the second he steps on the pitch there is no denying his work rate, superb skills and dedication to the team. His reinsertion into the first XI might not be an instant hit, Suarez has only played for his country and a few closed door matches during his suspension, but once he regains full match fitness things should seriously start rolling once again at Anfield. It is impossible to argue the fact Liverpool have taken significant strides forward in the last year, but Suarez is the final piece to the puzzle that could see this team make some serious noise going forward. It’s time to put all the petty drama behind us. No more “Will he stay or will he go?”. Enough; “Let him walk, we’re better off without him!”. Now is the time to welcome back one of the best players to grace the Red half of Merseyside, and hope he has matured in his time away. If he picks up where he left off last season, and continues to build a cohesive relationship with Sturridge and Co, all will soon be forgiven at Anfield. Welcome back Luis.

Despite The Drama, Suarez Return Is Just What the Doctor Ordered

Craig Rimmer looks ahead to forthcoming games and asks, where will the returning Luis Suarez fit into the present Liverpool team?

Luis Suarez will make a timely return to the Liverpool squad this week in the wake of the disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Southampton – a result which drew to an abrupt halt Liverpool’s strong start to the new season.

Whilst the end of the Uruguayan’s 10-match domestic ban will prove a welcome distraction for both fans and teammates alike, the belated start to Suarez’s season may also pose some interesting questions to manager, Brendan Rodgers. Not least where last season’s 30 goal top scorer will fit into the current Liverpool team.

Let us makes matters clear; this certainly cannot be viewed as a problem per se. After all, the addition of such creative, potent attacking energy, which will almost certainly accompany Suarez’s imminent return, can only act to improve Liverpool as a team; not least in the attacking third, where Liverpool have somewhat lost their way in spite of some promising early-season signs.

What is more, the signals are positive in terms of Suarez’s match fitness. Suarez came through a couple of crucial world cup qualifiers for his country, Uruguay, just a couple of weeks past – international football which has, for a change, proved to be of great convenience to his club side. Whilst Rodgers has himself revealed that Suarez has also been involved in a number of practices matches hosted at Melwood over the course of the early weeks of the season. No substitute for the intensity of Premier League football; but we can assume that Suarez will not require too long to get up to speed.

However, the role in which Suarez is to be utilised may well go some way to deciding the direction that Liverpool ‘s season takes over the coming months and determining whether this current Rodgers’ team are able to make a sustained challenge for the much-coveted Champions League qualification spots.

There is little doubt that Liverpool’s strength and depth in the attacking third has improved beyond bounds over the course of 2013, with the additions of Daniel Sturridge, Philipe Coutinho and, to a lesser extent, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Victor Moses. Yet, Suarez is the one man at Rodgers’ disposal who is able to consistently produce the type of match-winning performance which can allow Liverpool to compete with their key rivals at the top of the Premier League.

The fact that Suarez is able to cover any of the front four positions, and probably perform equally as effectively in each, is a huge bonus. However, with Sturridge in such a rich vein of goal-scoring form, there can be little argument for the England forward to be dislodged from his current central position.

Instead, Suarez may be best utilised on the left of an attacking three. A position which he became accustomed to during his spell in Holland and one which we saw intermittently last season. Even playing as a centre-forward, Suarez is often inclined to drift into the channels and expose the opposition full-back.

Despite some doubters, there were brief signs that Sturridge and Suarez were able to develop a good understanding during the limited time which they have spent together on the pitch. Given a free rein to drift inside and exploit space regularly vacated by Sturridge – who has a tendency to drop deep, Suarez can complement the existing attack whilst still contributing the number of goals which Liverpool need.

This is not to say that the days of Suarez as the centre-forward are numbered. With Sturridge’s injury record far short of encouraging and Aspas seemingly unsuited to a central attacking role in the Premier League, the Uruguayan may yet see plenty of football from a position which proved so effective last season.

Suarez may equally have been considered for the berth in behind the central striker – the oft-termed ‘No. 10’ role. In the short-term absence of Coutinho this may be the obvious option. However, by my mind, Liverpool’s most glaring deficiency so far this season – one which was particularly exposed against Southampton – is the lack of balance in midfield.

Liverpool’s midfield is desperately calling out for somebody who wants the ball to feet in midfield; somebody who is comfortable and intelligent with possession. It is a role which Coutinho, when deployed centrally, can fulfill. Despite not playing an especially starring role against Swansea City, the young Brazilian proved his value in this regard and was missed when forced to leave the field through injury.

In the short-term absence of Coutinho, Luis Alberto should be given the opportunity to stake a claim to the role; or perhaps Joe Allen if he can prove fitness. Players who are comfortable in possession and would add an extra dimension to midfield; allowing Suarez to cut-in and threaten from the flanks.

Fitness permitting, Suarez from the left and Coutinho centrally in support of Sturridge, with Aspas or Henderson from the right, may be the most effective set up. That would leave Moses as a very effective impact substitute – an element which has often been lacking and a role which Moses played effectively for Chelsea at the back end of last season.

All told it will be intriguing to discover just how Rodgers approaches the task of reintroducing Suarez to his team over the coming matches. Yet, one thing is for certain. Liverpool will prove a much tougher proposition for the renewed presence of the enigmatic Uruguayan.

Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his belief that the decisions he is taking as Liverpool manager are helping to guide the club 'in the direction that it should be going in'.

The Northern Irishman has overseen three victories in five Barclays Premier League matches so far this season, with the Reds sitting in fifth place after the opening exchanges.

On Wednesday, Rodgers' team continue their quest for Capital One Cup glory - with a fascinating clash against rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford in the third round.

The boss told talkSPORT: "I want to be the one that steers the club back in the direction that it should be going in.

"That's not easy but I know I'm making the decisions in the best interests of the club, and that will always be the case.

"There was a difficult period at the beginning but from that we've grown and become better and better. I've got great confidence that in the coming months and years, we can really push on with that development.

"It's an incredible club - I've been on the outside, knowing Liverpool was a big club but it's not until you actually come in that the sheer scale and status of the club is phenomenal.

"To be the one in charge, trying to, in this part of its history, put it on the right track and the right direction - I'm hugely privileged.

"I'll fight for as long as I can to be here as long as I can; I know that's about getting good results."

Luis Suarez is eligible for selection once more against the Red Devils, making a timely return with Philippe Coutinho currently on the sidelines - and Rodgers is pleased with the level of competition within his squad.

He added: "We have got a few injuries at the moment, obviously young Philippe Coutinho - which was a big blow for us.

"Because he makes other players play, he's a wonderful technician and understands the model of our work. Competition is important for every position."

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has taken a step forward in his recovery from an ankle injury, with Brendan Rodgers hopeful that the No.2 will return 'in the next couple of weeks'.

The 29-year-old suffered a high ankle sprain during the Reds' 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the beginning of September and has not kicked a ball since.

But after Johnson tweeted to reveal that a protective boot had been removed on Monday, Reds boss Rodgers provided the latest news on the full-back's fitness.

"Glen is the type of player that you don't realise until he's not in the team, what you are missing," the Northern Irishman said.

"He is athletic and he started the season very, very well. Against Manchester United he was outstanding.

"He's got the boot off his foot and he is working very hard. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks he will be back."

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore envisages success 'in England and Europe' for his old club under Brendan Rodgers during the coming years.

The 42-year-old, who notched 35 goals in 81 appearances for the Reds across his short spell at Anfield in the mid-1990s, believes a top-four finish is a realistic prospect for this season.

Collymore has been impressed with the work carried out by manager Rodgers - including developing young players into first-team members - since his appointment last summer.

"Brendan Rodgers doesn't have as much money perhaps as Chelsea and Manchester City," he told talkSPORT.

"But he's getting together a very good young team, players like Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho. The aims and ambitions for Liverpool this season is to try to get into that top four.

"Brendan Rodgers has to do what he does best - which is take young players, develop them, coach them and work with them every single day.

"It may take a little bit longer than it has taken Manchester City or Chelsea, who threw lots of money at the club very early.

"But I do see Liverpool, in the next five years, being successful in England and Europe once again."

Philippe Coutinho is eager to shake off his injury setback as soon as possible and pull on a Liverpool shirt again.

philippe coutinho website

The midfielder was forced off the field in the 2-2 draw against Swansea on September 16 with a shoulder complaint, and needed surgery to rectify the damage.

Coutinho has labeled the operation a 'success', but revealed his disappointment at the timing of the injury, given his inspired performances since joining the Reds in January.

The Brazilian is focused on his rehabilitation process, and wants to get back onto the pitch as soon as he is ready.

"It's annoying to get injured, especially when you are playing well, but that happens," he told Globo Esporte.

"I now want to focus on my recovery, and do everything right to be back as soon as possible to help Liverpool in the league.

"The surgery was a success and this is what matters the most. I'll be back soon."

While Coutinho has designs on making the Brazil squad for next year's World Cup, he is aware his recovery and performances for Liverpool upon his return will determine whether he receives his wish.

"I dream of getting called up again for the national team, but it's only up to me," the 21-year-old said.

"Of course it's bad when you get injured in a moment like this, but this is football.

"I have had a set-back and my concern is being fully ready as soon as possible. If I play well, things will happen naturally."

Brendan Rodgers‘ desire to get former Liverpool players more involved at the club is starting to come to fruition, with Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones taking up roles within the academy.

Jones, the former full-back who played for the club from 1991 to 1999, has taken up a part-time role as a mentor for the Under 21 side, working behind the scenes to support coach Alex Inglethorpe and his staff.

“Brendan asked me to get involved in some sort of role a few months ago” explained Jones to This Is Anfield. “It’s nothing full-time but I’m there to support the staff and offer advice to players.”

“I spoke to Ryan [McLaughlin] and Joe [Maguire] and have had a good response from the lads so far. They have a great team spirit and togetherness about the group.”

Jones was at last week’s Under 21 match against Sunderland (pictured above) alongside another player returning to the club, Steve McManaman.

They will also be joined by Robbie Fowler – whose role will be more involved. The legendary striker is currently working towards his UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence.

Earlier this year, Rodgers explained to The Liverpool Echo:

“We will be looking to do that [get former players involved] in a number of areas, whether that be through coaching or ambassadorial roles, but there’s nothing concrete at the moment. The most important thing for me is the club, not Brendan Rodgers. I stressed to the owners that this is something I want to push forward in the summer.”

Credit to Rodgers who has identified the lack of former players involved at the club and whose advice can be invaluable to players progressing in the academy.

An absolute stunner from Adam Morgan and a first under 21 goal from Cameron Brannagan ensured that Liverpool Under 21s beat Man City Under 21s 2-0 at Hyde on Monday night.

After last week’s 5-2 thrashing of 2nd placed Sunderland, Alex Inglethorpe’s side were back in action as they faced a Man City side who have struggled under new coach Patrik Vieira only picking up 1 week from their opening 4 games. The Liverpool boss made six changes from the side that beat Sunderland last week. Due to the first team’s game with Manchester United on Wednesday, all of the 6 players who aren’t in today’s fixture have been included in the squad for Old Trafford. They are: Jon Flanagan, Tiago Ilori, Martin Kelly, Jordon Ibe, Raheem Sterling and last week’s hat-trick hero Luis Alberto.

The good news for Liverpool was that they had new signing Rafael Paez at their disposal, after the 18 year old was granted international clearance. Also, Craig Roddan returned to midfield whilst Stephen Sama, Lloyd Jones and Joe Maguire joined Paez in defence. Despite being sent off last week, Jones started as his suspension does not start until next week. The final change saw Ryan McLaughlin – playing on the right of midfield – and Adam Morgan come into the side.

The major team news for City was that Marcos Lopes did not play, as he is expected to be in the squad for their trip to Wigan on Wednesday. Despite being the underdogs, Liverpool started the game brightly as Cameron Brannagan capitalised on a poor Man City pass, but he couldn’t gain control of the ball as Jason Denayon eventually recovered. In the 16th minute, Liverpool had their next chance as a Jack Dunn corner was well met by captain Stephen Sama at the near post, but the German could only head his effort over the crossbar.

9 minutes later, Liverpool took the lead in superb circumstances as Adam Morgan received the ball on the half way line, ran 5 yards, looked up, saw the ‘keeper was off his line and perfectly placed one over the back tracking ‘keeper as he gave the Reds the lead in the best possible manner, off the underside of the bar.

Watch Morgan’s Goal:

Morgan continued his fine goalscoring form by making it 2 goals from 2 apperances as he scored against Manchester United in his last game for the Under 21s. Chances were few and far between as the next real chance fell in injury time in the first halfl Jack Dunn’s set piece again found Sama, and again the right-back headed it over from 10 yards out. The half ended 1-0 to Liverpool Under 21s.

Knowing they needed a goal to get back into the tie, Manchester City came out on the front foot and it took them just 3 minutes to test Danny Ward as the Wales Under 21 ‘keeper mad a good reflex save to deny Devante Cole, son of former Manchester United striker Andy Cole and the Liverpool defence eventually cleared.

In the 53rd minute there was bad news for Liverpool as Jack Dunn went off injured and was replaced by Villyan Bijev, who hasn’t played since the opening game against Southampton. The injury to Dunn would be a huge loss for the Under 21s as he has impressed throughout the season thus far.

There was more bad news moments later, as McLaughlin was taken out by a Man City player and looked to recover from the nasty incident. In the 71st minute, the bad news soon turned to delight, as Sama ran past two defenders and pulled it back for Cameron Brannagan, who sloted home easily to double the Reds lead.

Chances were few and far between after Brannagan’s goal as Liverpool’s defence, especially debutant Rafa Paez and Stephen Sama performed well to restrict Man City from coming back into the game and when they started to test the young defence, it was too late to make any significant impact on the game.

Liverpool’s next game will be against Alex Inglethorpe’s former club Tottenham Hotspur on Monday 7th October, where they will be looking to make it 3 from 3 in the league and push further up the table.
