Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher does not believe Mario Balotelli will remain with the club next season, and has labelled the controversial forward a panic buy.
Balotelli joined the Reds from AC Milan for £16million over the summer but has offered little thus far to suggest he can make a lasting impression at Anfield.
He was hauled off at the interval during the Merseysiders’ 3-0 humbling defeat to Real Madrid, suggesting manager Brendan Rodgers‘ patience is already wearing thin at the Italian’s lacklustre displays.
Balotelli earned further ire by swapping shirts with Real defender Pepe at half-time and Carragher, who thinks Liverpool rushed in to sign the 24-year-old as a replacement for Luis Suarez, has suggested the striker could soon find himself surplus to requirements.
“I’d be surprised to see him here next season,” said the former centre-half, who made over 500 appearances for Liverpool in 17 years.
Carragher added: “It was just a panic; they needed someone. They left it too late and they’ve bought different players in different positions instead of maybe going out, not spending the whole Suarez money on one player, but buying two or three big players.
“A lot of the players have come in and done a decent job here and there, but nobody’s really done anything.
“They bring in Balotelli late on – it’s obviously a panic.”
Other former Liverpool players in Jamie Redknapp and Graeme Souness have questioned why Balotelli was signed at all, given his track record of falling out with high-profile managers at his other clubs.
“I don’t blame Mario Balotelli – I blame Brendan Rodgers for bringing him here,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports 5.
“How he thought he could turn around a player that (Jose) Mourinho, (Roberto) Mancini, (Cesare) Prandelli have all washed their hands of…
“There’s a reason when you go to the supermarket and things are half price. Why on earth they went for him, I’ll never know.
“They should have just left him alone. The fact he went and got him, it just doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Souness, a former player and manager of Liverpool, backed up his fellow pundits, adding: “It was a really, really brave decision to take him into that football club, given the quality of managers and the quality of clubs that have said ‘thanks but no thanks’.”

As if Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers did not have enough to worry about after being out-classed by Real Madrid he also found himself having to deal with another Mario Balotelli problem.
The 3-0 loss to the reigning European champions thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal at Anfield – edging him within one of equalling Raul’s Champions League record of 71 – and two from striker Karim Benzema displayed a gulf in class in the first half.
What was not classy was Balotelli, who was replaced at the interval, swapping shirts with Pepe as they headed down the tunnel.
The misfiring Italy striker is giving his manager enough headaches with his disinterested displays and poor return of one goal in 10 appearances so the last thing the Northern Irishman needed was an additional workload of reprimanding the 24-year-old.
“We had an incident with a player last year (Mamadou Sakho swapped shirts with Samuel Eto’o during the 2-1 defeat at Chelsea last December) and that was something we dealt with internally,” said Rodgers.
“It is not something I stand for. If you want to do that you do it at the end of the game. It is something I will deal with tomorrow.”
On his decision to substitute Balotelli at half-time Rodgers added: “It was purely tactical. I felt we needed a bit more movement centrally to occupy the centre-halves and Raheem’s speed and movement would give us that.
“Adam Lallana came on and he was tireless. In the second half every single player was pressing and working wanting to get something from the game and for us the minimum here.
“Adam came on and did that very well. In fairness to Raheem playing in a position that was a bit alien to him he worked tirelessly all the way through and showed quality.”
Despite Real’s obvious brilliance after riding out a spell of Liverpool pressure for the first 20 minutes Rodgers felt the half-time scoreline was harsh on his side.
“I thought we started very well. We were aggressive in our pressing and our passing and we were coping very well until that period after they got the first goal until half-time,” he said.
“We conceded a disappointing first goal and the other two were sloppy and loose and nowhere near to what we would want. ”
“At 3-0 against a team that score so many goals and can be so dangerous it is a dangerous game.
“That first period we were very good but we conceded poor goals against a top side. “Second half we were technically much better, kept possession much better and were a threat.
“Overall I thought it was a bit harsh to be 3-0 down at half-time but the quality and speed of their game is at another level.”
Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was more laid back about the shirt-swapping – but his side had just coasted to a third successive victory in Group B which puts them on the verge of qualifying with plenty spare.
“I think it is normal in football to change the shirt at the end,” he said. “I think it is nothing new. Sometimes the players change their shirt at half-time with the opponent. I don’t see a problem.”
Even less of an issue was their performance, as having the match wrapped up by half-time was ideal preparation for El Clasico against Barcelona on Saturday as he was able to substitute Ronaldo with 15 minutes to go.
“It was not something we agreed before. I noticed the impact he had on the game, he worked very hard, put in a lot of sprinting up and down the wing, so I just thought it was time to give him a rest,” he said.
“I think it has been a very important win and am happy we played very well. “We played some excellent football in a good atmosphere. We played a team that did its best to cause problems for us but we managed to prevail and play good football throughout.”

Liverpool lost 3-0 to an exceptional Real Madrid side in their Champions League clash at Anfield on Wednesday evening. We round up the reaction of journalists, fans an ex-players on twitter.
Liverpool were outclassed by a terrific Real Madrid side at Anfield, as Brendan Rodgers‘ succumbed to a deserved 3-0 loss against the European Champions. Two goals from Karim Benzema, both avoidable, and a terrific strike by Cristiano Ronaldo were the difference on the night, but in truth it could have been more had Los Blancos not eased off in the second-half.
It was an evening that showed just how good the top teams in Europe are, and illustrated how far Rogders’ side still are from being the finished article. Once against soft goals were conceded, and it is becoming a serious cause for concern.
In the other Group B clash, Ludogorets secured a last-minute win against Basel, which is an excellent result for the Reds in their quest to qualify for the knockout stages. Madrid are top on nine points, while the other three all have three points. It is all to play for.

Liverpool succumbed to a demoralising defeat to Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, as Karim Benzema’s double and a terrific Cristiano Ronaldo strike gave them a deserved win over Brendan Rodgers‘ side.
Liverpool 0-3 Real Madrid
Champions League / Anfield / Wednesday, 22nd October 2014
Goals: Ronaldo (23), Benzema (30 &41)
These were the nights we dreamed about during the summer, as Real Madrid visited Anfield for a mouth-watering Champions League clash. As it turned out, and as many had predicted prior to the game, it ended up being something of a nightmare.
Brendan Rodgers made three changes to the side that narrowly beat QPR on Sunday, with Alberto Moreno replacing the disappointing Jose Enrique at left-back and Joe Allen coming in for Emre Can in midfield. Philippe Coutinho‘s impressive cameo against the Rs saw him preferred to Adam Lallana.
Former Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo started for Los Blancos, as did former Red Alvaro Arbeloa, but Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos missed out through injury.
There was a frantic feel to the opening exchanges, as both sides took a little time to settle in front of a typically atmospheric Anfield. The Reds looked threatening though, with Raheem Sterling clearly unsettling the European champions’ defence.
Ronaldo and Gerrard tested Simon Mignolet and Iker Casillas respectively, from long-range, but they were the only moments of genuine threat on goal in the first 20 minutes. The Reds’ relentless early pressing died, however, and the visitors began to take control.
After 22 minutes Carlo Ancelotti’s side took the lead, and it was a wonderful goal. Ronaldo played a brilliant one-two with James Rodriguez, and the 2014 Ballon d’Or winner poked a terrific effort past Mignolet. It was a dagger through the hearts of Rodgers’ side.
It was 2-0 minutes later, as Karim Benzema’s header looped into the far corner of the Anfield Road net. It was set to be an extremely long evening.
It was 3-0 shortly before half-time, and the game was well and truly put to bed. Benzema tapped home following a scrappy spell of play from a corner. It was yet more poor defending from a set-piece, with numerous players not doing their job.
Allen fired an effort wide at the other end, and Coutinho thundered a wonderful effort against the post, but at the Liverpool trailed 3-0. An Istanbul-esque comeback was needed.
Balotelli was replaced by Adam Lallana at the break, and there were some who wondered whether the Italian’s decision to swap shirts with Pepe at the break may have angered Rodgers into substituting him.
It was a decent start to the second-half by Liverpool, and Lallana’s link-up play with Sterling and Coutinho was immediately impressive. There was an understandable flatness about the game, however.
Ronaldo forced Mignolet into a save on the hour mark, as the visitors continued to look horribly threatening on the counter-attack.
Midway through the second-half Sterling’s effort was tipped over by Casillas, and the Reds’ general play was much-improved. A terrific burst through the midfield by substitute Emre Can brought a rare cheer from the hushed home faithful.
As the final 10 minutes approached, it was simply a case of whether Liverpool could get a consolation goal to give the scoreline a slightly better look. It didn’t come though, and there were no further goals in the contest.
The final whistle blew, bringing an end to what had been an eye-opening evening for Rodgers and his side. Their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages are now looking dicey to say the least.
Man of the Match: Philippe Coutinho
Tactical Overview
Rodgers opted for the 4-4-2 diamond formation that has often been very effective over the past 12 months or so. Gerrard started in the deep-lying playmaker role, Coutinho played at the tip of the diamond and Sterling started up front alongside Balotelli.
Having pressed very effectively early on, in which the likes of Pepe and Raphael Varane looked a little rattled, Liverpool’s intensity fell away, and Madrid ran the show. The Reds’ formation became more of a 4-5-1, giving the visitors’ midfield three all the time and space to run the show.
It was hard to watch at times, but this young team will learn hugely from such a tough evening.
Liverpool:Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Gerrard, Henderson (Can 67), Allen, Coutinho (Markovic 67), Sterling, Balotelli (Lallana 46).
Subs not used: Jones, Toure, Manquillo, Lambert.
Real Madrid starting XI:Casillas, Arbeloa, Varane, Pepe, Marcelo, Kroos, Modric, Rodriguez, Isco, Ronaldo, Benzema

Real Madrid produced a first-half masterclass as they overpowered Liverpool 3-0 in their Champions League Group B clash at Anfield.
Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 70th Champions League goal with a stunning finish to set Real on their way midway through the first half.
Karim Benzema added a second on 30 minutes with a brilliant looping header and he put the game beyond Liverpool before half-time with a simple finish after more suspect defending from the home side.
Liverpool tried to rally in the second half, but Real held them at bay comfortably to secure their first win in their illustrious history over the Merseyside outfit
Liverpool tried to make a fast start and on 10 minutes Steven Gerrard found space on the edge of the box and fired in a dipping shot which Iker Casillas pushed away at full stretch.
But, after working their way into the contest, Real struck on 23 minutes with a superb effort from Ronaldo as he scored his first goal at Anfield.
Ronaldo started the move working the ball to James Rodriguez before collecting the Colombian's superb lofted return pass into the box and firing a brilliant shot under pressure from Martin Skrtel into the corner of Simon Mignolet's net.
The former Manchester United player went close to scoring again five minutes later when he cut past Steven Gerrard on the edge of the box and fizzed his shot just wide of the target.
Real doubled their lead on the half hour mark when Liverpool only half cleared a corner and Toni Kroos had time to pick out Benzema at the far post, the Frenchman looping his header brilliantly over Mignolet into the far corner from a tight angle.
Things got even worse for Liverpool four minutes before the break as they gifted Benzema his second goal of the game and surely one of the easiest of his career.
Mignolet and Skrtel made a mess of dealing with a corner and Benzema was on hand to gleefully slot the ball into the empty net.
Liverpool tried to rally before half-time and Joe Allen fired a shot wide of the target after being picked out by Mario Balotelli inside the box.
The home side were inches away from reducing the arrears right on the stroke of half-time as Philippe Coutinho smashed a shot from 25 yards out against the post with Casillas well beaten.
Brendan Rodgers made a change at the break with Balotelli making way for Adam Lallana and although the former Southampton man added guile to the Liverpool attack they struggled to make any inroads into the Real defence.
Real looked the more likelier to score again as they looked to hit Liverpool on the break and Ronaldo forced Mignolet into a good save after being gifted the ball by Dejan Lovren.
Ronaldo really should have made it 4-0 on 64 minutes when Benzema flicked Isco's cross into the path of Ronaldo in front of goal and with only Mignolet to beat the Portuguese star saw his shot kept out by the legs of the Liverpool keeper.
Liverpool huffed and puffed in the closing stages, but never looked like getting back into the game as Real coasted through to the final whistle.

Liverpool huffed and puffed in the closing stages, but never looked like getting back into the game as Real coasted through to the final whistle.

first half liverpool bermain dengan tidak berhati-hati menyebabkan senang dibolosi 3 gol...kelemahan yang begitu ketara di bahagian defensive liverpool....Lovren,skrtle,johnson tdk dpt mngawal pergerakan CR,Benzema, james yg menyebabkan mereka senang mengatur perlawanan dengan baik...
Second half Memang tidak dinafikan liverpool bermain dengan baik...defend juga baik cuma johnson sahaja yg agak mengecewakan...Liverpool cuba utk mencipta gol namun defend real madrid memang terbaik mengawal sterling dan lallana...liverpool hanya mampu memegang bola sehigga ke petak D Real madrid shj...
Liverpool mmg ketiadaan penyerang yg berkualiti utk tembusi tembok pertahanan hebat Real madrid...
Dengan kekalahan kpd real madrid, liverpool kini di tangga ke 3 peringkat kumpulan...jika liverpool ingin layak ke pusingan seterusnya, liverpool harus menang menentang Fc basel dan Pfc Ludogorets Nanti...
