Modern football “supporters” often have a very acid tongue, choosing to remember the worst – effectively re-writing history to suit their agenda.

More often than not, this phenomenon occurs when a player or manager sees the latter stages of their time at the club overshadow their initial successes. That’s certainly the case with this former manager in part one of this series.

Gerard Houllier

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 5, 2003: Liverpool's manager Ge?rard Houllier walks out to face Manchester United during the Premiership match at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

I recently posted a tweet linking to an article on the former Liverpool boss seeing as it was 15 years since he took sole charge of the club. The first response immediately bemoaned how, apparently, Houllier was “a poor manager” who “surrounded himself with poor French players”.

Let’s first address the “poor manager” claim, one which is often, in it’s various forms, thrown around when Houllier’s name is mentioned.

To me, any manager who signs Sami Hyypia – a player who was completely unknown at the time, and went on to win every major honour with the club – for £2.5m is not a poor one.

Throw in other signings such as Stephane Henchoz (£3.5m), Didi Hamann (£8m), John Arne Riise (£6m), Gary McAllister (free), Markus Babbel (free) and numerous others like Westerveld, Smicer, Barmby, Litmanen, Heskey and Baros who all had made positive contributions to Liverpool FC. Those are not the signings of a “poor manager”.

This is a manager who lead Liverpool to the unrivalled success of three Cup victories in one season, and in that same season (2000/01) also achieved a third place finish, and thus a return to the European Cup for the first time since the 1980s. Some feat for a “poor manager”.

Look through the list of players to have won the Ballon d’Or, not many of them have a “poor manager” that year. Michael Owen didn’t in 2001 either.

That next season, Houllier lead Liverpool to a second place finish with 80 points – at the time their most in a Premier League season and their most since 1988. Poor? Really?

CARDIFF, WALES - Sunday, March 2, 2003: Liverpool's manager Gerard Houllier celebrates winning the League Cup after beating Manchester United 2-0 during the Football League Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Admittedly, things went downhill for the next two seasons – although, there was a League Cup victory over Man United thrown in there.

Houllier’s mistakes all arrived after his return from heart surgery, whether this affected his judgement we’ll never know.

The first major mistake was the infamous substitution of Didi Hamann for Vladimir Smicer in the 2002 Champions League quarter-final at Bayer Leverkusen which The Reds went on to lose 4-3 on aggregate.

That following summer Houllier signed the trio of flops in El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao and Bruno Cheyrou as he attempted to add attacking talents to the squad. For me, Houllier built brilliant, solid foundations, but failed to put the roof on the house. The signing of Diouf instead of making Nicolas Anelka’s loan spell was a huge error of judgement – but all manager’s have them.

Overall, to suggest that Houllier was a poor manager for Liverpool, or that his time at Anfield was a failure is far from the truth.

Houllier rebuilt and modernised the club; he was instrumental in overhauling the squad, the training ground and the way the club approached fitness as the rest of England struggled to keep up with Europe.

Houllier put Liverpool back on the European map with the 2001 UEFA Cup win, the club’s first European trophy in 17 years, and achieving qualification for the Champions League (European Cup) for the first time since the Heysel ban in 1985.

Gerard Houllier was not a poor manager for Liverpool FC.

Secondly, how about the claim that he “surrounded himself with poor French players”. Houllier signed 40 players for Liverpool FC – of which, 13 were French (32.5%). A high percentage, yes, but all managers are “guilty” of signing players from a market which they feel they know best, especially when first arriving at a club and wanting players who understand their methods or philosophy.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, November 4, 2001: Liverpool's supporters on the Spion Kop pay tribute to manager Gerard Houllier with a mosaic before the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Arsene Wenger did it, Rafa Benitez did it. Liverpool’s first ever manager, John McKenna, signed a whole “Team of Macs” due to his connections in Scotland.

Yes, a lot of Houllier’s French signings were major flops, but why should that overshadow bargain signings such as Hyypia, Henchoz, Hamann, Babbel and McAllister? Surely, as a Liverpool supporter, it’s the successes that should be applauded and remembered – not the other way around.

Football is about winning, and supporting is about celebrating. I’d rather celebrate a great player who contributed to the history of the football club, than bemoan a player who didn’t work out.

Re-writing Liverpool’s History – Gerard Houllier

Liverpool already have ten players out on loan this season – with another two, Michael Ngoo and Joao Carlos Teixeira having returned from their respective loans early.

Here’s five more Liverpool players currently not in the manager’s plans who could benefit from a spell out on loan getting regular competitive action.

Raheem Sterling

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 21, 2013: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling looks dejected after missing a chance against Southampton during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It’s easy to forget that Raheem Sterling is still only 18 years-old and many have placed unrealistic expectations upon him at this stage in his development – not helped by his over-exposure to first-team football last year at this time.

Within Rodgers’ currently system, which sees Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge as a front-two, there is no real place for a winger of which Sterling is. Whether that be in the 3-4-1-2 formation or the narrow 4-4-2 used against Fulham most recently.

A loan, perhaps to a Championship side were there is less scrutiny and less pressure, would be of huge benefit to Sterling right now, even if only short-term initially.

Jon Flanagan

The 20 year-old was a surprise inclusion for his first appearance in the first-team for 18 months in the defeat at Arsenal recently, but isn’t likely to feature following the return of Glen Johnson from injury.

Some supporters speculated that Flanagan may find himself behind Ryan McLaughlin this season but with Andre Wisdom on loan to Derby County, The Reds are short of right-back cover. Either way, Flanagan could definitely benefit from getting regular first-team football for the first time in his career.

Tiago Ilori

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 17, 2013: Liverpool's Tiago Ilori in action against Sunderland during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

A £7m arrival from Sporting Libson this summer, 20 year-old Ilori is yet to make his debut for the club. He was an unused sub against Sunderland and Crystal Palace, but will only find his opportunities further limited if Rodgers continues with a regular back four than three at the back.

Ilori has Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho all ahead of him and isn’t likely to feature any time soon. A loan to get some much needed Premier League experience would be excellent for his development. The question is, which club would be willing to risk a young centre-back?

Michael Ngoo

Ngoo, the 6ft 6in forward, returned early from his loan spell at Yeovil having made just one League start. He enjoyed a more successful spell in Scotland at Hearts at the end of last season and clearly needs to get regular football to continue his education.

Adam Morgan

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, September 23, 2013: Liverpool's Adam Morgan celebrates scoring the first goal against Manchester City during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Ewen Fields. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Morgan, 19, is another whose development would benefit from regular football. He was loaned to Rotherham last season but had his deal cut short after playing just over 100 minutes of football for Steve Evans’ side.

He’s a goalscorer who a League One side should take a chance on him.

Players currently out on loan:

Fabio Borini – Season loan to Sunderland (Premier League)

Oussama Assaidi – Season loan to Stoke City (Premier League)

Andre Wisdom – Season loan to Derby County (Championship)

Jack Robinson – Season loan to Blackpool (Championship)

Conor Coady – 6 months loan to Sheffield United (League One)

Pepe Reina – Season loan to Napoli (Serie A)

Suso – Season loan to Almeria (La Liga)

Krisztian Adorjan – Season loan to Groningen (Eredivisie)

Henoc Mukendi – 6 months loan to Partick Thistle (SPL)

Armin Hodzic – Season loan to FK Zeljeznicar, (Bosnian Premijer Liga)

LIVERPOOL MAHU YARMOLENKO...

AIN!

Entri XXX: Mak...Ayah..Enon Balik Ni...

Kerana Ain nadi hidup saya.

She has been there for me unconditionaly

Di sepanjang 17 tahun usia perkahwinan kami

Kasih sayangnya, pengorbanannya, luhur budinya..

"Everything is going to be okay Bang. We always have each other. Through thick or thin.. We will always have US.."

"It is thunderstorm babah. I am scared"

Bicara petah Adam memecah kebuntuan. Barangkali inilah kali pertama dia melihat kilat sabung menyabung.

Tiba tiba Ain menyapa saya

"Banggg.."

"Hmmm"

" Thanks ya Bang for making this trip. I love you so much"

Saya tersenyum.

" You have been there for me kan Ain? "

Bila arwah mak abang hadapi suasana macam ni kan?

This is the least that I could do for you Ain"

Ain sentuh bahu saya. Dia usap rambut saya.

" I love you abang... Love you so much"

Perjalanan kami teruskan tanpa banyak berhenti.

" Apa Ain rasa sekarang? Lalu jalan kampung ni? Ada yang berubah lepas 4 tahun Ain tinggalkan?"

" Tak banyak berubahpun jalan ni bang. Sama aja bonggol bonggol lopaknya. Entah bila agaknya jalan kecik macam ni nak dibetulkan entah. Sempit sangat jalannya"

" Eloklah macam tu kot. So you can pick up the journey from the date that you have left kampung kan? Where nothing has changed jadi kenangan tu tak ada gap"

" Yelah tu..."

Kami sama sama ketawa

Bila sampai ke Kampung Kubu Gajah perjalanan masih seperti biasa. Dari situ perjalanan hanya bersisa dalam 10-15 minit.

Adam dan Awwab sudah bangun dari tidur.

"Adam .. Awwab.. Kita dah nak sampai kat kampung Mama tau. Adam say Selama Kedah.. awwab say Malaysia"

Mengekek ngekek kami ketawa.

Dia teruja.

"Dah sampai dah bang...dah sampai.."

Sampai di tepi rumah dilihat pintu pagar berkunci. Itupun terlajak sedikit kerana pagar berjaring itu baru dipasang barangkali.

Saya mahu keluar membuka pintu pagar tiba tiba ternampak sesusuk tubuh keluar dari pintu rumah

"Kak Maziah tu bang. Dia bukak pintu kot"

Ain pantas menurunkan tingkap kereta.

"Assalamulaikum Kak Maziah... Apa habaq?"

"Wsalam...sampai dah.."

Saya pandu kenderaan masuk ke tengah laman. Ain pantas membuka pintu kereta.

Mereka berpelukan.

This is Mak Ngah tau"

Mereka masih blur.

Ain pantas berjalan menuju ayah.

"Assalamualikum Ayah... Enon balik ni"

Saya lihat wajah ayah terkejut. Mulutnya ternganga

"Laaaaa Enon kaa? Balik ka Enon? Laaaaaa"

Dua beranak berpelukan di depan pintu dapur melepas rindu.

"Adam..Awwab..meet Atuk..shake hands with Atuk please?"

Adam dan Awwab menghampiri Atuknya.

"Adam..Awwab...peluk atuk meh"

Kedua anak bujang saya masih kehairanan.

Saya hampiri ayah.

"Assalamulaikum Ayah.. ayah sihat?"

Ayah pandang saya. Mata ayah berkaca tanpa suara.

Saya kucup pipi ayah.

"Mak mana Kak Maziah?"

Wajah mak kelihatan. Dia terkejut barangkali kerana tidurnya terganggu.

"Mak.. assalamualaikum.. Kenai dak sapa ni mak?"

Mak renung wajah saya

" Zali kaa? Zali kan? Eh Zaliiii"

Saya peluk mak. Saya cium pipi mak.. Saya angguk angguk kepala.

Saya toleh ke pintu dapur. Saya nampak Ain menghampiri

Saya beri ruang pada Ain.

"Assalmualaikum Mak. Enon ni mak. Enon balik jumpa mak"

Mak terdiam.. Mata lesu mak berkaca.

Detik kerinduan dua beranak bersatu.

Mereka berangkulan. Pelukan tanpa suara.

Air mata menjadi bicara tanpa suara

Detik Ain kembali

Setelah 4 tahun Ain tinggalkan desa ini

4 tahun...1460 hari..

Istimewanya detik ini...

MasyaAllah...

Alhamdulillah..

Terima kasih teman...

Terima kasih atas doa dan inspirasi..

Terima kasih...
