Steven Gerrard has revealed that England’s current pre-World Cup training camp has been a welcome distraction for him from overanalysing the end of Liverpool’s season.
Speaking the most openly yet about his slip for Liverpool to let Demba Ba in for a goal in the Reds’ 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Anfield in April, which let Manchester City back in to win the Premier League title, Gerrard said he is using his experience to put it behind him.
“Otherwise I would be sitting on a sun lounger wondering back to the last three or four games, going over and over where it’s gone wrong and asking myself why and driving myself potty,” Gerrard told a press conference at the training camp in Portugal.
“I’ve got to park the slip at the back of my mind and forget about it for the time being because I’ve got a huge tournament coming up.”
However, Gerrard put some positive spin on Liverpool’s 2013/14 campaign, revealing how he coped with the disappointment of coming so close to the club’s first title in 24 years.
“I don’t like making mistakes, big mistakes, at important times,” he added. “I’ve made a few, more than a few, throughout my career. And as a player with experience you learn to deal with them that little bit better the older you get – but yes, it hurt a lot.
“Not just the slip, it was more letting the title slip towards the end because we had come so close and had a terrific season.”
“But with experience you tend to look back at the positives as well as the negatives. To finish second in the hardest league in the world and to have the season I’ve had personally, to watch the likes of Raheem Sterling grow and to see the team do so well was fantastic.”
Gerrard also revealed to press that he will not decide his international football future until after the World Cup this summer, with presumptions that the 33-year-old will hang up his boots on his England days following the tournament.
Now Gerrard has turned all his attentions to England’s preparations for this summer’s World Cup, which starts on Thursday, June 12th in Brazil.
England’s first game is against Italy on Saturday, June 14th, with group games following that against Uruguay and Costa Rica.

Steven Gerrard on THAT slip: “It hurt a lot”

Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling an Steven Gerrard are now fully focussed on their preparations for this summer’s World Cup campaign with England.
The pair, along with Glen Johnson, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and the rest of the England squad have been training at a camp in Porgual this week.
The tournament begins on Thursday, June 12th in Brazil, with England’s first game against Italy on Saturday, June 14th.
After a stunning season with Liverpool, Sterling has been touted for a starting place in Roy Hodgson’s team, and the 19-year-old isn’t phased by his young age.
“Now we have to work the England way and do what the England manager wants to do. But we’ll definitely be working together to try to produce that form,” he is quoted in The Guardian as saying.
“I’m just working hard, so anything can happen but I’m not going to say I’m going to do amazing things. I will give 100%. And hopefully what I try will come off.
“I’m not going to put myself under pressure and say I’m going to do what Michael Owen did. I’m just going to work hard for the team.”
Meanwhile Steven Gerrard will be playing his third World Cup tournament and has spoken about the potential of club teammate Luis Suarez being absent from Uruguay’s clash against England on Thursday, June 19th.
“I think from a really, really selfish point of view it would help England against Uruguay if he wasn’t available, of course it would,” the Liverpool and England skipper said.
“But knowing Luis as a mate and a friend and a team-mate, I know that missing World Cup would absolutely kill him.
“I wouldn’t wish an injury on any of my fellow professionals. We’ll have to wait and see. I know he’s a fighter and he’ll do everything he can to be fit.”
England have three World Cup warm-up friendlies before the tournament begins, facing Peru on Friday, May 30th, Ecuador on Wednesday, June 4th and Honduras on Saturday, June 7th.
Which Liverpool players are you most looking forward to seeing playing for their countries at the World Cup this summer? Let us know in the comments section below.

Daniel Sturridge is grateful to Liverpool for giving him a chance to prove that he can be a prolific central striker.
The England international burst onto the scene as a promising frontman at Manchester City, but took the opportunity to run down his contract the Etihad Stadium and move to Chelsea in 2009.
An initial lack of opportunities forced him out on loan, with a spell at Bolton Wanderers showing that he could get goals at a Premier League level.
Chelsea remained reluctant to deploy Sturridge down the middle, though, and he soon grew disillusioned with life on the flanks.
A switch to Anfield in January 2013 offered him a clean slate, and the 24-year-old has responded with 35 goals in 49 games - a return he always believed he was capable of providing.
Sturridge said in the Daily Telegraph ahead of his involvement at this summer's World Cup: "I've just been given the opportunity, and that's what I've asked for in the past.
"That's what I've said, 'Give me that opportunity and then I can try to show what I can do'.
"I think that it's down to the club which players they want to give a chance to and the philosophies they choose.
"I can't speak for Chelsea or City and say they were wrong in this or that. When you've got money, it's very easy to buy someone worth £50million, rather than say: 'I'm going to play this 20-year-old English player'. It's easier to buy someone when you have the money to do it.
"But at the same time, if you give somebody an opportunity, you never know. You can only roll the dice and see how they perform.
"I'm thankful for everything that happened at those previous clubs. Man City put me on the map in terms of giving me a chance to play in the first team environment and Chelsea also helped me to improve mentally and as a footballer. I won trophies there.
"Sometimes people change clubs. I would never regret anything."
While he has proven himself to be more than capable of leading the line, Sturridge insists he would have no complaints if England boss Roy Hodgson asks him to fill a wider role again in Brazil - with Wayne Rooney also looking to provide a cutting edge.
He added: "I think you have to do what's necessary for the team.
"We all want to be successful, we all want to achieve something special in terms of it having been a long time since we had success.
"Myself and Wayne get along really well off the field and we get on well on the field. Whatever formation the manager chooses, whether it is two up front or one up front, someone is wide, someone on the bench, it could be me, it could be Wayne.
"My preference is as the central striker, but it doesn't really matter what my preference is. If you can play wide, you play wide. If you are asked to play central, you play central."

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge needed opportunity to prove his worth

BARISAN KEMUNGKINAN LFC MUSIM 2014/15 Amacam ??? OTAI KPLM
Matt Briggs begins week two of the 2014 TEAMtalk Soccers ceremony by presenting the silverware for the Goal of the Season.
The last 12 months seems to have been the season of the volley, and three have made our top five goals - voted for by you, our loyal readers.
Surprisingly, Luis Suarez missed out, but in truth the Liverpool frontman, who scored 31 times, could have had his own Goal of the Season competition with three of his efforts against Norwich gaining numerous votes over the last couple of weeks.
Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure's nonchalant clipped effort in the cup final also grabbed plenty of attention, while Preston marksman Joe Garner can consider himself unlucky not to feature with his wonderful volleyed effort in the play-offs against Rotherham.
But all the votes have now been logged and here are the top five:
5. Alex Tettey - Norwich v Sunderland:
To 'thrash' is to hit something hard and repeatedly - and although Tettey only scored once all season and so the 'repeatedly' part is not relevant, I still think we can say his goal against Sunderland was 'thrashed' into the net.
Recorded at 65mph - so I'm told - we can safely conclude the ball was 'travelling', and despite Vito Mannone's spectacular dive there was no way he could have denied the Canaries midfielder - even from 32 yards.
It was a thumping volley which arrowed, without too much deviation, into the corner of the net and just inside Mannone's left-hand post. Even without the ball moving too much, to have expected Mannone to get a hand to it would have been optimistic to say the least.
It was a brilliant demonstration of volleying technique from a player who does have a tendency to shoot from long range - often without much reward.
It was also a goal that gave the Norwich faithful something to cheer from a pretty depressing season and our readers were equally impressed ranking it in the top five.
4. Wayne Rooney - West Ham v Manchester United:
It was fitting that United legend David Beckham was in the crowd at Upton Park, because Rooney's goal from the halfway line was reminiscent of Beckham's wonderful effort some 18 years earlier.
Personally, I think Beckham's goal against Wimbledon just shaded it, but Rooney's 54-yard half-volley was spectacular and worthy of any Goal of the Season short-list.
Forget the nudge on James Tomkins in the build-up and the suspect positioning by Hammers keeper Adrian, this was still a classy opportunistic strike.
Whether the half-volley made it easier or harder, and I have seen compelling arguments for both, this was a goal which demonstrated terrific vision and control. More of the same in Brazil please, Wayne.
3. Jonjo Shelvey - Swansea v Aston Villa:
Another goal from a ridiculous range. And even though it wasn't quite from the halfway line, where Rooney scored from, Shelvey's strike surpassed the England man's effort and in another season he would have surely taken the top honour.
Once again the goalkeeper's positioning could be called into question, because Brad Guzan was stood well outside his left-hand post when Shelvey made contact, but such was the accuracy of the strike, Guzan was left flapping.
Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar was punished before he could even apologise to his team-mates. It was his awful ball down the middle which was chested down instantly by Shelvey and then clattered on the half-volley towards the centre of the goal.
With a hint of slice, the ball moved from left to right and nestled in the top corner with both Guzan and Vlaar open-mouthed and catching flies, such was the speed of thought and execution.
2. Jack Wilshere - Arsenal v Norwich:
If ever a goal typified a club and a manager then it was Wilshere's effort against relegated Norwich.
The Gunners have often been accused of trying to walk the ball in the net and in October at The Emirates they did just that.
Wilshere finished a four-man move with a close-range, first-time finish which left Canaries keeper John Ruddy, hands on hips, stood like a plum debating whether to applaud or berate his defence - which had got so close together you could have covered them all with a picnic blanket.
It was a fabulous team goal and one usually confined to training, such was Norwich's inability to make an effective block or tackle. And that might well be the reason why Wilshere, who did enjoy some fortune with a fancy flick in the build-up, failed to come top of the shop with our readers.
Norwich, who conceded 44 goals on the road this term on the way down to the Championship, will not enjoy the re-runs of the England man's finish because as much as it was Arsenal brilliance, there was also an element of Norwich ineptitude. A case of "too many cooks spoil the broth" with five Norwich players all in close attendance.
In short, it could have been prevented, but it was still a brilliant end-to-end, sweeping move with a decisive finish and it comes in as a fine runner-up.
1. Pajtim Kasami - Crystal Palace v Fulham:
Another sublime volley that, put simply, was impossible to prevent.
A darting run from the halfway line towards the corner of the box, chest control worthy of ex-Manchester United ace Mark Hughes and an angled finish to better anything the 'King of the Volley' Hughes produced in his illustrious playing career. It was simply breathtaking and a goal no defender in the world would have stopped.
Poor old Palace centre-back Adrian Mariappa must have thought he had Kasami in his pocket when he shadowed him into the penalty area. He was breathing down his neck, but what the young Macedonian produced was a goal beyond the top drawer.
The volley, from a ball dropping over your shoulder, is often described as the most difficult skill in the game, but Kasami's execution was perfect.
To get the ball on target from such an acute angle was impressive; to find the far corner and evade Julian Speroni's clutches was out of this world.

We bring you the best of the Sunday papers’ Liverpool transfer rumours, with a snag in a potential deal for Adam Lallana developing.
Brendan Rodgers‘ long-standing interest in Southampton playmaker Adam Lallana has apparently hit a snag, according to the Liverpool Echo this weekend.
The paper claims that Liverpool have bid around £20 million for the England international, but the Saints are holding out for an increased fee due to a previous arrangement with Lallana’s former club, Bournemouth AFC.
“Lallana’s first club Bournemouth are entitled to 25% of any fee and the Saints would be expecting to pocket around £20million themselves before having to hand over the Cherries’ chunk.”
This would increase any potential deal for the midfielder to around the £25 million mark, which may lead Rodgers and the Liverpool transfer committee to question the value of this deal.
Negotiations may continue for a fair while, as Lallana is apparently “reluctant to hand in a formal transfer request to force through a move given his long association with the Saints.”
The Echo remain confident that the transfer will go through, however, suggesting that Lallana feels that “he has gone as far as he can with the south coast club.”
Liverpool’s interest in Chelsea’s out-of-contract left-back Ashley Cole is heightening, as per the Daily Mirror .
Included on the club’s list of released players, Cole has no shortage of potential suitors, with options are afield as the MLS and amongst Europe’s elite, reportedly including Champions League winners Real Madrid.
The Mirror report that the 33-year-old wants to continue to challenge in the Champions League, and has his sights set on a two-year deal at any future club.
Liverpool have a clear need for a left-back this summer, with Aly Cissokho‘s loan finishing and question surrounding the future of Spaniard Jose Enrique, and the Mirror believe Cole would be the choice of Brendan Rodgers.
“The Anfield chief knows Cole from their time together at Chelsea and although he does not fit the age profile of players Liverpool are looking to recruit this summer, he believes the former England left-back is an intriguing option.”
Cole’s contract at Chelsea was reportedly near £130,000-a-week, and it is believe that Liverpool would offer slightly reduced terms, aided by the low cost of the potential transfer.
Liverpool have stepped up their interest in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can in recent days, as reported by The Telegraph.
As the Germany Under-21 international has a buy-back clause inserted in his contract benefiting former club Bayern Munich, Liverpool have accelerated the deal as said clause cannot be activated until next summer.
The Reds are apparently “closing in on a £12 million deal”, and signing Can would give Rodgers’ side a big boost at the beginning of the transfer window, with the German-Turkish midfielder proving a hugely versatile option, and one of the Bundesliga’s most prodigious talents.
“Can is seen as dynamic, box-to-box midfielder in the mould of [Bastian] Schweinsteiger.”
Reported on Friday by the Independent , 18-year-old Liverpool midfield starlet Cameron Brannagan has been linked with a shock move to Spanish giants Barcelona.
The paper claims that “Barcelona – who have watched him for the last year – have received rave scouting reports and are seeking him for their B side.”
Liverpool’s coaching believe Brannagan is “a midfielder with the potential to be a top player, owing to his balance, vision and his ability with both feet.”
The academy prospect would join an exclusive list of British players to have played for Barcelona, including Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes.
Young Englishmen moving to clubs abroad is a fairly rare occurrence, and former Liverpool trainee Dale Jennings is proof of the dangers of a move too early in a footballing career, as per BBC Sport.
With Rodgers rating Brannagan highly enough to include the midfielder in his match-day squad for Liverpool’s 2-0 FA Cup third round win over Oldham in January, it is likely that the Reds’ manager will hold on with all his might for this prodigious talent.
He can’t believe it either.
Providing this weekend’s comic relief, the Daily Mail have linked Liverpool with a move for Italian international, and former Manchester City forward, Mario Balotelli.
Following a dream move to Italian giants AC Milan in 2013, Balotelli is reportedly “sick of the racism he suffers in Italy and it is understood the former Manchester City star realises life in England was not so bad.”
Arsenal are apparently also interested in the 23-year-old, and Liverpool would only move for the striker if “Luis Suarez is lured away to Real Madrid or Barcelona after the World Cup.”
With the Uruguayan recently stressing his commitment to the Reds once more, it would perhaps be wise to hold back on any bets on the mercurial Balotelli gracing Anfield in all red any time soon.

Exactly nine years after Liverpool’s fifth European Cup triumph in Istanbul under dramatic circumstances, Jeff Goulding recalls that famous night.
2005 is about far more than Istanbul for me. With all great story’s it’s always more about the journey than the destination. As far as I am concerned it all started in that game against Olympiakos. This was a game that, had the final not played out the way it did, would have been rightly been described as a miracle. The fact it is now overshadowed by what happened in the Ataturk Stadium tells you just how special that Champions League run was.
We went into that game fully expecting to be in the Europa League by full time. Stevie himself had bee mildly rebuked by Rafa earlier for saying we couldn’t go on and win the competition. None of us disagreed with him though. At half time things couldn’t have been worse. We needed to win by two clear goals, and the Greeks were a goal up from a belter by Rivaldo. We now needed three goals in the second half. Impossible surely.
The atmosphere inside the ground after the interval has faded from most peoples memories now. Not mine. I was in the Anfield Road end, and the singing was continuous from our lot and theirs. The whole place was bouncing. As the ball arrived at Gerrard’s boot, from Mellor’s header time stood still. I never got to hear Andy Gray scream “You beauty!” until much later, but who could disagree with the sentiment. The Greeks were silent we were jubilant. That was the first miracle of Istanbul out of the way.
The ground seemed to take an age to empty, and my abiding memory is of George Sephton declaring it the greatest atmosphere he had ever witnessed. Now that’s some statement. I was just carried away and immediately broke my golden rule of never betting on the reds.
Leverkeusen and Juve seemed to pass me by. Looking back it seems like they were just a footnote. That said, a very tense lager fuelled night in the Blue Anchor watching the second leg tells a different story.
So it was on to the semi against Chelsea. I can barely remember the first leg at Stamford Bridge. I think Lampard went close at one point but that’s about it. The rest is a blur.
I got a ticket for the return leg in the Kop. The ground was filling up long before kick off, and we could hear the songs as we walked through the turnstiles. I remember us joining in as we presented our tickets and climbed the steps to our seats. By the time kick off arrived the pressure in my head and churning in my stomach had reached unbearable levels. My legs were shaking, and my throat already raw. How would I get through 90 odd minutes?
Of course we are Liverpool and, as we proved with Olympiakos if we are going to do something at all, we’ll do it the hard way. So it proved to be. I have to admit for me Garcia’s delicate chip didn’t look a goal from my perspective (not that it matters one bit). For several seconds I was actually unsure what had happened. The players were going mental, and it seemed to take a while before the people in my section cottoned on to the fact we had scored.
What followed can be best described as brief pandemonium followed by an eternity of nerve shredding tension. I still don’t know how my heart kept going throughout the 95 minutes that followed. I have no idea how I kept my tea and pre match beer down when the ball fell to Eidur Gudjhonsen. It seemed harder to miss, but he did. Chalk off the second miracle.
There then followed a taxi ride to the Hare and Hounds in West Derby Village. We had a Turkish Odyssey to plan. Well my mates did. To my eternal shame I listened to the wife. There had been trouble in Turkey before, with Leeds fans stabbed. She persuaded me it would be too risky, so I agreed not to go. The fact we are still married now may well be the third miracle.
I got a measure of revenge in that the final took place on our anniversary. I should mention now that she is a blue, and seeing the lads pull off one of the greatest fight backs of all time whilst being largely ignored by me couldn’t have sat well. The fact that I went through all the champagne probably didn’t help much either.
At half time I was inconsolable, not that she was trying to hard to console me. Like everyone else I feared a real mauling. This could have been an embarrassment of epic proportions. I went outside for some fresh air, and to clear my head. The banners and poster in the neighbours windows were mocking me. Sulking men and women were standing on the door steps, some smoking others looked to be in tears.
I looked up at the sky. I don’t know why. I am not in the least bit religious. By full time I was definitely feeling the rapture though. I had a decision to make, just like the Reds in the Ataturk. Did I really want to watch the rest of this? I took a deep breath and told my self to get a grip. The boys had taken us this far. Nobody, me included gave them a chance at the start of the season. They had already pulled of enough miracles for several seasons. The least I could do was stick with them come what may.
So I went back in, opened another bottle of bubbly and settled in for rest of the game. By the time Xabi put in the penalty, after Dida had given me a heart attack I was crying my eyes out. They were uncontrollable tears of joy. The wife had retired to the kitchen to clear away my uneaten anniversary dinner. She came running in and on seeing the score just stood open mouthed, before saying “You’re kidding me?” She sat and watched the rest of the game with me, and willing us on. Miracle number four.
Extra time and penalties didn’t phase me one bit that night. I had already agreed with Andy Gray who when Dudek pulled off the fifth miracle, said you might as well start carving Liverpool’s name on this cup. I had no doubt we would end up with the cup, it seemed written in the stars. Then came miracle number five, the cup was ours to keep.
Funnily enough though, when I reflect on that incredible season, it’s not the five amazing miracles I remember most. It’s not returning all of my blue mates texts at full time that gives me the most pleasure. Nor is it the unbridled joy I felt the following morning as I bought every newspaper in the shop (except one of course). For me my abiding and most pleasurable memory was standing outside the Jolly Miller on Queens Drive with my daughters and son to welcome the team home.
My kids had been too young to fully appreciate Houllier’s treble winning season in 2001. Seeing their excitement as the bus went by, hearing them shout and cheer brought fresh tears. I had seen it all. To them this was new. A new generation baptised in glory. That was the sixth miracle of Istanbul.
