Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admits the team are back in a period of transition similar to when he first arrived at Anfield and accepts there will be more pain to come before things pick up again.
The departure of striker Luis Suarez, integrating a raft of summer signings and injuries to a number of players have all contributed to a difficult start to the campaign.
They have yet to reach anything close to the blistering form they displayed in the second half of last season having won just twice in the league and scored only eight times in six matches.
Of greater concern is their defensive weakness with just one clean sheet in nine outings this season and only two in their last 18 games, which incorporates their scintillating displays which took them to a runners-up place in May.
Rodgers denied, however, he was facing the biggest challenge of his managerial career after expectations were raised following last season's second place.
"No, not really. It's an exciting challenge. This is an incredible job and nothing has changed," he said.
"The first six months were difficult here but for 18 months we've been on a magic carpet ride in terms of our performance level and everything improving.
"For me it would have been a case of keeping the squad we had and adding a few bodies to thicken up the squad.
"But that wasn't the case. There was big change here in the summer and we lost a world-class player (when Suarez was sold to Barcelona).
"We had to improve the squad and bring in a number of players and unfortunately we've lost a number of our key players to injuries.
"It brings us into a little period of transition again.
"It's something that was difficult in the first few months when I got here.
"You have to go through some pain along the way. We are in a difficult moment but that's the great challenge for myself and the players.
"We will look at it even harder and analyse it more just to ensure we keep it simple and keep to the values and ethics of this team – hard work, honesty and concentrating on our performance."
On Saturday Liverpool host West Brom, who were Rodgers' first opponents when he took over in the summer of 2012.
"There are similarities in that it feels like a new group again," he added.
"I'm not here to whine or complain about injuries. We just need to get on with working hard and go back to core principles which our good performances and wins were all about.
"The job now is similar to then in terms of need to integrate all of that to create winning performances."
Injuries have significantly restricted Rodgers' options this season, particularly up front where the absence of Daniel Sturridge with a thigh injury for a month, has left B£16million summer signing Mario Balotelli isolated in more ways than one.
The Italy striker has scored just one goal, against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets, since arriving and has struggled to reproduce the form he showed for Manchester City when he first came to the Premier League.
When Sturridge returns Rodgers will have the opportunity to play his preferred diamond formation with two up front but until then he has mainly stuck to a 4-2-3-1 set-up.
"It's with the players that we have. I think once I get the injured players back it will give me more flexibility," said the Reds boss.
"I think the idea at this moment is to keep it as simple as we can for the players so the team can be as cohesive as we possibly can be.
"Once I get other players back who can adapt to play in a number of positions then it makes it a bit more flexible for me."
With Emre Can's injury and Philippe Coutinho's loss of form, midfield is an area in which Liverpool have struggled and an injury to Joe Allen on international duty a month ago has left Rodgers effectively choosing five players from seven he has available.
Allen's absence has been particularly felt.
"He's a player who never gets mentioned but he's a player who rarely turns over the ball. He loves the football and gets other people playing," said the manager.
"The key feature for Joe on top of that is the intensity in his pressure.
"He's an intelligent footballer. Tactically he's outstanding and we've really missed his energy and his quality since he's been out.
"He will be back after the international break. Hopefully he'll be available for the QPR game."

Brendan Rodgers on “exciting challenge” as boss admits Reds are “in transition”

Brendan Rodgers’ men host West Brom on Saturday afternoon in Liverpool’s first 3pm kick off of the season – a game in which the Reds will be looking to start the turnaround of their recent struggles.
Liverpool will be looking to end a poor patch of form in all competitions on Saturday when they take on an in-form West Bromwich Albion team at Anfield, as the Reds look to improve dramatically on the winless month of league games played out in September.
Rodgers’ side continue to struggle both offensively and defensively, and the characteristics associated with the philosophy the Northern Irishman has installed at the club have all seemingly been forgotten with performance unrecognisable to date – Tottenham away aside.
As a result of the combination of bad displays and results, the Liverpool boss is under the first genuine spell of pressure since arriving, and how he and his team respond to the tough period could be the making or breaking of both players and staff alike.
While injuries from the dreaded international break have played a significant part in the derailing of the team and disrupted any rhythm that was being found, performances have not been good enough considering the quality still at the managers’ disposal.
Serious questions will be asked if the Reds’ form doesn’t improve drastically in the very near future and Rodgers’ team will be looking to begin the turn-around starting on Saturday afternoon against Alan Irvine’s Baggies, but the Ulsterman is unlikely to be able to implement many changes to his under-performing side.
The Team
Daniel Sturridge’s importance to Liverpool has been illustrated perfectly during the spell of his absence and all the attention in the build up to the match will be over the England internationals’ availability for the game.
Rodgers’ has previously spoken of Saturday’s game being the most realistic target for a comeback for Sturridge but he admitted he will have to “wait and see” how the situation develops. Even if the born goal-scorer is able to make a return to the set-up, it’s likely to only be with a space on the bench as match fitness and sharpness is sure to be in short supply for the goal machine.
Mamadou Sakho and Spanish midfielder Suso are the most recent additions to the injury list – with the Frenchman suffering a thigh strain and the youngster a groin injury – as the Liverpool squad takes its total amount of injuries to seven.
Joe Allen, Emre Can, Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan are the rest of those unavailable players and with that, Rodgers’ is limited in his ability to freshen up and make adjustments to his team.
Therefore, Mignolet and three of the back four are set to stay as they are, but Alberto Moreno will be hoping to be recalled to the starting team ahead of Jose Enrique who was the managers’ preferred option on the disappointing night in Switzerland.
Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho remain the only genuine midfield options for Rodgers and all three are likely to continue in the starting team on Saturday.
Adam Lallana will be hopeful of receiving a recall to the starting XI for the clash and if so, it should come at the expense of Lazar Markovic who produced an indifferent display against Basel on Wednesday.
With no Sturridge, the under-fire Mario Balotelli is set to continue up front, but Rodgers has a decision to make over whether that is on his own or in a two man partnership, with Fabio Borini the only genuine natural striking option.
The Line Up
Liverpool have struggled with the rigid 4-2-3-1 formation deployed in recent weeks, and in order to win the midfield battle and help protect Gerrard’s legs, Rodgers must switch to a three man midfield, if not the highly successful diamond.
The back four picks itself currently with Moreno coming back into the team ahead of Enrique but the Liverpool boss has two options for his midfield. Firstly, a three man centre in a 4-3-3 shape allows for the captain to be assisted by Henderson and Coutinho or secondly, in a four man midfield with Lallana added at the top of the diamond.
If playing a three man attack, Lallana, Sterling and Balotelli is the pick, but if a two man strike partnership is chosen, Sterling should partner the Italian with Borini having not taken the opportunities given and Lambert a fourth choice striker and nothing more.
With those changes, Liverpool should line up like this on Saturday (4-3-3):
Alternatively, the Liverpool manager could switch back to the successful 4-diamond midfield-2 in which Liverpool should look like this:
If Sturridge makes a miraculous recovery and is fit enough to play from the start, this is how the Reds should line up:
Saturday has become a more important fixture than previously thought and if the Reds leave Anfield without a positive performance and result, pressure will continue to mount.
A regroup over the looming international break is needed, but before evaluations and inquests are held during the international fortnight, Liverpool must return to winning ways in game that presents a big opportunity for the Reds to do so.

Keputusan perlawanan Piala Malaysia Quater Final Leg 1 Faizal -LMFC/
Speculation of a move away from Napoli for Marek Hamsik has been played down, with the player’s agent insisting he is happy with the Serie A club.
The Slovakia playmaker has been linked with a number of European sides, with Liverpool tipped as leaders in the race to sign the 27-year-old in January.
Hamsik has been an influential force under former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez at Napoli, registering a double-digit goal tally in all but one of his seasons with the Italian club.
However, reports suggest Napoli are set for wholesale changes in January meaning the 71-cap international could be on the market, although his agent insists he is settled at the Stadio San Paolo.
"Marek could be sold whenever he wants, but while he feels good at Napoli we don't need to take into consideration any other options", Juraj Venglos told Sky Sport Italia.
The agent added: "Should he decide he wants to move, things will change. But at the moment Marek feels good at Napoli.”
Hamsik is in line to make his fifth Serie A appearance of the season on Sunday as Napoli host Torino.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will wait to see whether Daniel Sturridge is fit enough to be involved against West Brom.
The striker has missed six matches with a thigh strain and while he is edging closer to full fitness he has been left out of England's 2016 qualifiers due to his lack of action.
Defenders Glen Johnson and Mamadou Sakho (both thigh), Jon Flanagan (knee), midfielders Joe Allen (knee) and Emre Can (ankle) are all unavailable.
Silvestre Varela is out of West Brom's trip to Merseyside as the club assess whether he needs hernia surgery.
The Baggies are liasing with the winger's parent club Porto to see if Varela needs to go under the knife.
Strikers Brown Ideye (ankle) and Victor Anichebe (groin) are also sidelined meaning four-goal Saido Berahino will lead the line and Chris Baird is fit again after illness.

Thursday’s newspapers saw a host of “5 reasons for Liverpool’s slump” type articles after another disappointing defeat and performance against Basel on Wednesday night.
Having failed to win a game – without the aid of penalties – since August, Brendan Rodgers‘ side are feeling the pressure. Where before the problem of a leaky defence was seemingly the only issue at Anfield, now arguably the problem is that there are so many problems.
We asked the This Is Anfield writers what they think is the main reason for the current poor form at Liverpool.
Last year’s achievements were built on high energy, two strikers at the top of their game and a growing belief that title was there for the taking. And now the energy is sporadic, neither striker is available for different reasons, and the Devon Lock style capitulation of last season is perhaps playing on everyone’s minds, including the boss.
Defence doesn’t trust their goalkeeper and the goalkeeper doesn’t trust his defence.
PJ Vaughan:
The biggest problem is we are not compact away from home, there are too big a gap between the lines, this leaves each line isolated and teams can run at us with ease. Teams push up on us now too as they are not dropping off and doubling up on Suarez which gave other attackers space last season.
Jamie Casey:
Uncharacteristically, we’re not good enough when in possession of the ball, and that’s why Joe Allen’s absence is being felt more so than ever before. Passing accuracy, chances created and possession percentages are down massively on last season, and as a result we never look like scoring, yet we don’t look any more assured at the back.
Signings. It was a summer in which it was agreed that we needed to step up and make stand-out signings. We lost Sturridge and had no replacement. We bought squad players.
Loss of Identity – Brendan Rodgers arrived at Liverpool Football Club with a firm, possession-based footballing philosophy. Over time, that has seeped away; we could do with going back to that now, particularly having lost the unpredictable individuality of Luis Suarez.
Lack of quality – Still early doors, but the loss of Suarez hasn’t helped. The quality of players brought in (so far) hasn’t been good enough. I know it’s easier said than done, but you need to replace proven quality with proven quality – players with international and Champions League experience. We had the money, yet got Lambert and Markovic in instead of Diego Costa and Fabregas! Always, always, always strengthen the team, not the squad!
Mahesh M.:
Coaching – almost all of our current problems can be sorted out with good quality work on the field. Be it defending from set pieces, lack of ball retention in midfield, poor movement upfront, poor pressing or Mingolet not commanding the box, the whole set can be rectified off the pitch but it has not yet been done. Midweek football to blame?
Without being predictable and bashing Steven Gerrard or lamenting the injury to Daniel Sturridge, I suggest that another injury, to Joe Allen, has been the biggest problem for Liverpool during this upset in form. The Welshman has proven his ability to bind the midfield in his three appearances so far and, with a distinct gulf between Gerrard and Jordan Henderson and the forward line in recent games, as well as an inability to sustain any pressure on the opposition, Allen’s absence has been felt massively.
Danny Gallagher:
Consistency – one key word which is forever hounding top flight football clubs. It is easy to pin blame on isolated areas such as the confidence-abolished form of Simon Mignolet or the defence as an entirety, however the problem with Liverpool right now is a lack of both fluid football and understanding. A spanner has been thrown into Brendan Rodgers’ machine presently, and, until the northern Irishman discovers how to remedy it, our frustrations may linger on.
New Signings – a lack of them being players in their “prime” (only Lallana and perhaps Lambert can be considered as such). Buying potential is admirable to build for the future but if we’re so far behind by that time then it’s of little value. We need to ensure we are in the Champions League next season, getting back in again takes years, as we well know.

There has been a lot of negativity of late, after a string of disappointing results, but Henry Jackson believes there are plenty of the reasons to be positive.
The reaction to Liverpool’s limp 1-0 defeat to FC Basel on Wednesday was arguably as negative as any since Brendan Rodgers arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2012.
It’s fair to say that things haven’t gone to plan yet this season, but it’s still extremely easy to be knee-jerk. There are plenty of reasons for optimism, and here are five reasons that should lift your spirits going into Saturday’s clash with West Brom at Anfield.
The Return Of Daniel Sturridge
Much has been made of how much Liverpool miss Luis Suarez, but the loss of Daniel Sturridge to injury over the last month has hurt them just as much.
The 25-year-old is still criminally underrated by some, and the goal threat, movement and pace that he gives the side is enormous. 36 goals in 52 appearances is an outstanding return – he scored more in his first 50 matches than Suarez, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Fernando Torres.
Mario Balotelli has has failed to fill the void left by Sturridge but his return should also help the Italian, assuming Rodgers goes with the 4-4-2 diamond formation.
Joe Allen And Emre Can
Joe Allen is a player who divides opinion hugely, but slowly but surely he is winning round a number of his detractors.
The 24-year-old has become a very important player to the team, pressing effectively in midfield and using the ball intelligently. He may not make the headlines, but his understated style is vital to how Liverpool play and they lack a certain zip without him.
People were quick to write off Jordan Henderson, who is now arguably the first name on Rodgers’ team-sheet, and Allen is gradually beginning to make the progress his teammate was about 18 months ago.
Emre Can made two impressive substitute appearances for the Reds before an ankle injury picked up for Germany’s Under-21 side ruled him out for up to six weeks.
Although not a starter, Can provides great squad depth, and him being fit would allow Rodgers to rest Steven Gerrard more than he is currently able to. The return of the 20-year-old can’t come soon enough.
Allen, along with Glen Johnson, should be back for the QPR game after the international break. Can should return to training over the next fortnight too.
The Form Of Adam Lallana
Many balked at the money Liverpool paid for Adam Lallana when he joined from Southampton and an injury picked up in pre-season halted his progress greatly. It seemed to put him firmly in the back of supporters’ minds.
After a couple of understandably rusty cameos upon his return, the 26-year-old has started to show that he could become a hugely important member of the side.
He made a noticeable difference when he came on against West Ham, was the Man of the Match against Middlesbrough and, arguably, Everton. He also gave the Reds extra urgency when he was introduced against Basel.
Lallana is a very talented footballer, and very un-English in style, and he has the ability to be a star at Anfield. There is a reason why he was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award alongside such names as Suarez, Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard last season.
Creative, hard-working and versatile, his ever-improving form is a big plus point.
The New Signings Should Only Get Better
There has been a lot of unrest about the performances of numerous new signings, with many claiming Liverpool are ‘doing a Spurs’, with the money spent from the sale of Suarez supposedly similar to how the north London club spent theirs when Gareth Bale left.
It’s easy to forget that we are only just into October, and it is harsh to judge the new Reds this early on in their careers.
Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno are both very young full-backs who will adjust to life in England by the game, while Dejan Lovren is already showing signs of improvement following a nervy start to his time on Merseyside.
Lazar Markovic is another who has struggled, but he was widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young players last season, and needs time to get used to the fast, physical aspect of the Premier League.
Balotelli, despite a poor start, also needs to be judged properly in another 10 games or so. It is clear that there is a huge amount of ability in his armoury; he just needs to add consistency and improved decision-making to his game.
The Reds Started Slowly Last Season Too
Such was the exceptional nature of much of Liverpool’s 2013/14 campaign, it’s easy to forget that they were not firing on all cylinders until around December.
Admittedly one key difference between then and now is that they weren’t playing brilliantly but still getting results- they were six points better off after as many games this time last year- but they scraped their way through three early 1-0 wins, and dropped careless points against the likes of Southampton, Newcastle and, most notably, Hull.
Of course, the chances of Rodgers’ men repeating last season’s heroics are almost impossible, but, as mentioned, it takes time for new signings to gel.
With key players returning from injury there is absolutely no reason why Liverpool won’t have a sudden resurgence once things start to click.
It’s time to get behind the team and be positive again.

5 Reasons For Optimism At Liverpool FC

After midweek disappointment in the Champions League, focus on the training ground switches swiftly back to the Premier League.
Exclusive Stats and Analysis for This Is Anfield from PA Sport Match Story
Following a disappointing display against Basel on Wednesday night, Brendan Rodgers will know the psychological importance of heading into the international break with three points in the bag.
Here we analyse the data for this week’s visitors to Anfield, West Brom, to identify the keys to the match for Liverpool ahead of Saturday’s clash.
Time to sharpen up
It’s no secret that Liverpool have struggled in front of goal recently, and with Daniel Sturridge still an injury doubt, all eyes will fall on Mario Balotelli.
The Italian has endured a frustrating start to life on Merseyside and his statistics don’t make pleasant reading. Balotelli is certainly trying: averaging a shot every 16.2 minutes in the Premier League – more often than any other player. Unfortunately, despite his obvious desire to impress, his accuracy is lacking, standing at just 25 per cent on target.
That wastefulness has contributed to Liverpool recording an average of 11.6 shots for each league goal scored – more than all but four other Premier League sides.
Rogers will need his enigmatic striker to be more clinical this weekend, as West Brom’s defence only allow an average of 9.8 shots at their goal – the fourth lowest in the league. Liverpool, for their part, have been even more miserly at the back, allowing an average of just 9.5 shots at their goal – only Southampton and Arsenal (both eight) have allowed fewer.
He who dares, wins
If West Brom’s defence is impressive for stifling their opponents’ opportunities, it’s perhaps no surprise that teams are choosing to try their luck from distance. Alan Irvine’s side have conceded four of their seven goals from outside the penalty area –double that of any other side.
This weakness in West Brom’s armour should alert the aforementioned Balotelli, who has hit 60% of his 20 efforts from long range since joining. To those sitting in the Kop – you have been warned!
Keep them at a distance
New centre-back pairing Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren continue to develop a partnership in the heart of defence and will need to work closely together if they’re to avoid a repeat of the situation that allowed Marco Streller to pounce from close range for Basel in midweek.
Alan Irvine’s team have scored three headers – the joint-most in the Premier League and only Chelsea have netted more from within the 6-yard box.
There is a silver lining, however. A main component of West Brom’s threat from wide areas – and their defence – Andre Wisdom, is unavailable due to the terms of his loan. With only Chelsea having more assists from crosses this season than the Baggies, Wisdom’s absence could strip them of their most potent threat.
Outlook
A string of disappointing performances has elevated the importance of taking three points from this tie. For the first time in a long time, Brendan Rodgers’ side are under scrutiny and in desperate need of both a result and a confident performance. West Brom will arrive at Anfield on a high, but their tendency to come undone from long distance could set the stage for Super Mario to finally find his range.

Rory Fitzgerald provides a detailed assessment of Basel’s goal against Liverpool on Wednesday, another conceded off a set piece.
“I’ve never seen a zone score a goal” – it’s an argument we’ve heard ad nauseam as more managers have deployed the zonal system.
With man marking, if a player scores then you know who is at fault – that’s the rationale provided by ex-pros that never played the more continental zonal system (but one which England’s technical director Howard Wilkinson has used for over 30 years).
Martin Skrtel played the man-marking system and still remained at fault despite his man not scoring the goal. So, is that a counter argument for the zonal marking proponents? According to Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports after Wednesday’s defeat, “…that’s Martin, he’ll never change”.
Football is a team game and never more so than when 7-8 players are working in a tight space to defend a set piece. So, why did Liverpool lose a game because Skrtel neutralised 50% of Basel’s aerial threat. Despite what is being said about Skrtel, Lovren & Gerrard will have a few questions to answer in the team meeting as well.
A few things with the corner:
1. Enrique being on the far post was a new development, it’s not something we normally see.
2. Basel have only 5 in the box and we have 6 in their vicinity combined with Enrique and Mignolet both on the goal line – certainly enough, no questions there at all.
3. Gerrard took his normal position just off the near post zonal marking. Henderson had a Basel player just behind Gerrard man marking.
4. Lovren and Skrtel are both marking the main threats. Notice how Lovren takes a more aggressive positions vis-a-vis his man compared to Skrtel who settles for just getting goal side.
4. At the near post, Gerrard had eyes on Henderson’s man too and decides it’s his man when he runs past him for a flick on if it’s a short delivery. Henderson realises that Gerrard has decided to leave his station and take his man. Henderson puts the brakes on from tracking him and tries to occupy Gerrard’s position – he misses the ball. Perhaps Gerrard would have too if he maintained his position. However, it seems Gerrard lost focus on his position to cover the man whilst Henderson had to react to the ‘change’ and try to cover Gerrard – far from ideal.
5. Skrtel is goalside of his man. Given that the ball is an out-swinger, he has a difficult job of winning it as Schar has the positional advantage.
6. Lovren is the opposite. When the ball clears Henderson, he decides he is not staying touch-tight with his man. The kind of touch-tight that Skrtel likes. Instead, he leaves Streller and is attracted to where the ball is likely to drop.
Personally, I prefer Lovren’s style to Skrtel. However, with the out swinging corner then Lovren’s decision is questionable. Whatever is levelled at Skrtel in that moment, his marker is certainly not getting anything clean on it.
7. At the moment when Streller scores, Skrtel is 2 yards goal side of Schar whilst Streller is 2 yards goal side of Lovren. It can be argued that Skrtel nullified Schar’s threat but did not neutralise the overall threat as the ball was still deflected towards our goal. Lovren on the other hand tried to win the ball – perhaps naively given the out swinger – and got punished given the ricochet of the ball towards our goal.
Side issue: Skrtel has carried out the stereotypical duties of a man-marker i.e. my man is not scoring. The zonal mantra is that you attack the ball when in your area. Has Skrtel done his job though by just focusing on Schar? He has nullified 50% of the biggest threats within the opposition with respect to aerial threats.
Lovren’s man scored the goal as he got attracted to the ball and wasn’t touch-tight. Was he right to attack the ball and not focus on his man despite it being an out swinging corner?
Gerrard abandoned zonal for man marking and caused confusion at the near post with Henderson, is that right? The corner could be a mini case study for zonal and man marking.
Conclusion: It appears a few things happened at that corner. Gerrard switched from zonal to covering a runner. Henderson took responsibility to cover Gerrard as the captain took Henderson’s responsibility.
“Zonal is a collective responsibility whereas man-for-man marking is based on personal responsibility.” Howard Wilkinson
Skrtel took man marking to the extreme whereas Lovren tried to win the ball despite it being an out swinging corner with Skrtel having a goal-side position.
Crucially, of the 6 active players in the box, 4 of them were not working in tandem. Management will be looking at the decision making of the majority of our more senior players at that set piece.
And the most damning aspect of that goal – there was no clever movement from Basel. No co-ordinated runs to the near post with players making arcing runs to the back post. No co-ordinated runs towards the goal line leaving players free between the 6 yard line and penalty spot. Nobody blocking off a marker to free a runner.
Coutinho scored at Goodison with an arcing run to the back post and scored last season. He made the same run vs City when Skrtel scored at Anfield with a near post flick. It’s an example of training ground routines manifesting itself on the pitch. There was none of this from Basel on that goal.
Their was no invention from Basel and yet the co-ordination from senior players in our team was left wanting. With Coutinho on the edge of the box and Markovic and Sterling up front – could it be that players were anxious to win the ball and start a counter attack? Whatever happened at that moment, the players were not working off a set script. Gerrard seemed to focus on a man when his task was zonal whilst Lovren was detailed to Streller but admirably/naively tried to win the ball.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted that buying Mario Balotelli was a 'calculated risk' based on a lack of other options.
The Reds spent £16m on the Italian - who has failed to score a Premier League goal since his return to England - purely because he was available at the end of the transfer window.
"I always said it was about availability and affordability of players," said Rodgers.
"Mario was the one right at the very end who was available for that. I said when he came in that it was a calculated risk and it’s something I have to work on to try to make it work for the team.
"You assess what the group had. We brought in Rickie Lambert as someone who can play some games for us and come off the bench and be an impact player for us in certain games.
"Daniel is a top Premier League player but has shown during his time here that he does get injuries so we needed to prepare for that. Obviously Fabio Borini looked like he was on his way out [to Sunderland].
"We had attempts for other strikers that didn’t materialise for one reason or another so it left us right at the end of the window with a decision on whether just to go with what we had, when experience told us we were too light, or take a calculated risk on a player who has quality and then could we get it out of him consistently?"
Balotelli has yet to look comfortable while playing for Liverpool, failing to touch the ball in Basel's penalty area during Wednesday's disappointing 1-0 UEFA Champions League defeat in Switzerland.
"In terms of his behaviour he is consciously trying to work hard at what we demand here, the intensity and work rate,” said Rodgers.
"I think in terms of goals, he needs to improve. It is as simple as that. At this moment he has not hit the numbers he will have wanted. I encourage the strikers to get into the framework of the goal, wide players to come in and get into the framework of the goal and to break the lines.
"The quality of our service [against Basel] wasn’t up to the standard it should be. You also have to make and create goals yourself and he didn’t do that. But we win and lose as a team, and against Basel we were not good enough."

We have statistics ahead of every Premier League game this weekend, with details of Liverpool's struggles and Stewart Downing's creativity.
Chelsea will hope to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League when they host fourth-placed Arsenal on Sunday, but a defeat for the Blues would give Southampton, who travel to Tottenham, the chance to take over at the summit.
Manchester City will also hope to capitalise on any slip-up from Jose Mourinho's men, while Manchester United, despite a poor start, are among the teams that could move into the top four with a victory.
At the other end, Sunderland, Newcastle and Burnley will all hope to claim their first wins of the season.
We take a look at the key Opta statistics ahead of the sixth round of games.
Hull City v Crystal Palace
The away side had a player sent off in both Premier League meetings between these teams last season, which were both won 1-0 by Crystal Palace.
The Eagles are unbeaten in their last eight league matches against Hull City, winning four and drawing four.
Hull have won just one of their last 11 Premier League matches since their FA Cup semi-final win in April (W1 D4 L6).
The Tigers have won none of their last five Premier League games at the KC Stadium (W0 D2 L3).
Crystal Palace have lost just one of their last seven Premier League away games (W4 D2 L1).
Crystal Palace have committed 91 fouls so far, more than any other side in the top flight.
Since the start of last season, Ahmed Elmohamady has fired in 275 crosses from open play, 51 more than any other player.
