Liverpool starlet Jordan Rossiter says it was a 'dream come true' to score a debut goal during the remarkable Capital One Cup triumph over Middlesbrough, but is determined to keep his feet on the ground.

The 17-year-old handed the Merseysiders an early lead at Anfield before the Reds were pegged back twice and taken to a penalty shoot-out, which they eventually won by a record 14-13 scoreline in the competition.

Rossiter became the second youngest goalscorer for the club where he has been plying his trade since the age of six and after scoring with a low 30-yard drive inside 10 minutes the Academy midfielder was left in dreamland.

"It was brilliant. I'm made up," a jubilant Rossiter told the Liverpool Echo.

"To score on my debut, I couldn't have asked for any more. It's a dream come true to be honest.

"I got told by the manager at training on Monday that I'd be starting. I was a bit shocked but I couldn't wait to get out here.

"I was a bit nervous but playing with some of the best players in the world helped.

"I was speaking to a few of the senior players before kick-off who just told me to enjoy it. It was a great opportunity for me and they helped me through.

"I can't even explain it. I can't even remember what happened. I'm looking forward to getting home and watching it on the TV. To score at Anfield is just a great feeling.

"I know I need to keep my feet on the ground and keep on improving. If I do that then hopefully I'll get more appearances in the future."

Jordan Rossiter was unsurprisingly delighted after scoring on his Liverpool first team debut in Tuesday night’s League Cup victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield.

Liverpool made hard work of the third round tie, being forced to penalties when the match ended 2-2 after extra time. Following an epic 14-13 shoot-out victory, Liverpool secured their place in the fourth round.

Rossiter broke the deadlock on 10 minutes with a drilled shot from 30 yards to mark a dream debut for the 17-year-old, who became Liverpool’s second youngest goalscorer of all time.

After the game, Rossiter was all smiles.

“To make my debut is a dream come true,” he told the club’s official website. “I got told I was starting on Monday and I was a bit shocked, to be honest. But I just couldn’t wait to get out there and it couldn’t have gone better.

“I can’t put it into words. When I scored, I didn’t know what to do. I just ran off celebrating, but it was a great experience.”

However, Rossiter isn’t getting carried away and admitted he realises he needs to stay level-headed for his career to progress.

“I know personally that this is just the start,” he added. “I’ve got to keep my feet on the ground.

“The manager just told me that I had done well. I need to keep on improving and to stay in and around the first team, while improving for the U21s week in, week out. I’m still a long way away from being in the first team. I’m still only 17.”

Rossiter’s debut and goal was met by messages of congratulations from Liverpool players past and present.

Earlier this year, This Is Anfield spoke to Rossiter after he collected his academy player of the year award for 2013/14. Read our interview with the Reds starlet here.

Another dramatic night at Anfield, this time an unprecedented penalty shootout record victory over Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Adam Lallana scores the third penalty against Middlesbrough during the shoot-out during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Andy Hunter of The Guardian perfectly explains the mood at full time:

“When it was all over, 27 of 30 penalties had been converted, Middlesbrough were on their knees in despair and Liverpool were too shattered to indulge fully in celebration. One of the most remarkable shoot-outs in English history brought relief for Brendan Rodgers’ team as they edged into the fourth round courtesy of an exhausting finale at Anfield and one final miss from the unfortunate Albert Adomah.”

Of the record number of penalties, Hunter writes:

“It was the longest penalty shoot-out in the history of the League Cup, the previous record set at 9-8 on three occasions, and more extensive than the FA Cup’s highest total when Macclesfield beat Forest Green 11-10 in 2001. Of major English competitions only the Football League Trophy can equal it, also boasting a 14-13 shoot-out.”

Liverpool 2-2 Middlesbrough

Dominic King of The Daily Mail writes that manager Brendan Rodgers “Rodgers will have left Anfield wondering when his side are going to stop giving away cheap goals. A better team than Middlesbrough might have eviscerated Liverpool.”

Similarly, Dan Kay of The Liverpool Echo writes “With Suarez gone, Sturridge still out and the other attacking options yet to hit their straps, the Reds simply have to stop giving so many easily-avoidable goals away.”

James Pearce, also of The Echo, explains how Liverpool created “their own problems by giving away a string of needless free-kicks. When they did work the ball into decent areas Lazar Markovic’s infuriating reluctance to shoot meant Blackman went untested. It was no surprise when the Serbian made way for Suso.”

Henry Winter of The Telegraph describes the penalties themselves as “phenomenal”:

“The level of penalty-taking was phenomenal, and Mario Balotelli could give lessons in composure and technique from 12 yards. He was not the only one. Even the goalkeepers netted theirs.”

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Rossiter celebrates scoring the first goal against Middlesbrough on his debut during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Of debutant Jordan Rossiter, Winter writes “Comparisons with Gerrard can wait. Rossiter has plenty to learn, but the Merseysider is developing well, justifying Rodgers’ faith. He showed calmness and vision to give Liverpool the lead after only 10 minutes.”

Liverpool edged past Middlesbrough in the League Cup third round on Tuesday evening, winning an incredible penalty shoot out 14-13 after drawing the match 2-2 after extra time.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's 'Suso' Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Saenz De La Torre celebrates scoring the second goal against Middlesbrough during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Brendan Rodgers opted for a 4-3-3 formation, with Rickie Lambert handed his first start for the club up front alongside Raheem Sterling and Lazar Markovic.

Jordan Rossiter came into the side to make his debut in midfield alongside Lucas and Adam Lallana, while Jose Enrique made his first start for almost 12 months in defence.

SIMON MIGNOLET – 6.5 (out of 10)

Another mixed bag from the Reds’ keeeper; made two superb saves – one in each half – saved a penalty and scored his own in the incredible shoot out. But still lacks presence inside the box and was arguably at fault for conceding yet another set-piece goal.

JAVIER MANQUILLO – 6

The Spaniard had a quiet first 45 minutes and grew into the game. He was actually one of the attacking threats later in the game. Another solid but raw performance from him.

KOLO TOURE – 4

A bizarre night for Toure on his first start since February (the calamitous own goal at Fulham). The first half saw him play some woeful long balls and one which he simply hammered into touch with no pressure on him. Added to that he gave away the penalty in stoppage time of extra time.

MAMADOU SAKHO – 6

Sakho is one who divides opinion, but he’s a solid performer, strong in the air and accurate in possession.

JOSE ENRIQUE – 6

Making his first start since being sidelined with knee problems last year, Enrique started well and was good in the tackle. He clearly tired as the game went on but that should be expected.

LUCAS LEIVA – 6

Another very Lucas-like performance; neither great nor poor. Nothing spectacular either way. Perhaps disappointing that he didn’t get forward more when he had Rossiter holding midfield. Showed good character later on and took both spot kicks well.

JORDAN ROSSITER – 7

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Rossiter celebrates scoring the first goal against Middlesbrough on his debut during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Given that the 17-year-old was making his first appearance for the club, this was an excellent showing before he was replaced on 79 mins. Took his goal expertly and showed no nerves, often leading others around him. A proper old school midfielder.

ADAM LALLANA – 7

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Adam Lallana scores the third penalty against Middlesbrough during the shoot-out during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Lallana was one of the more creative players on the night, showing nice touches and signs that he is hitting fitness. However, he did hold onto the ball too long on occasion and struggle to find that final ball or shot, often slipping on his backside.

LAZAR MARKOVIC – 5

The Serbian is struggling to get to grips with life at Anfield so far. He passed up two good opportunities to shoot and his final ball was often lacking. A somewhat anonymous display overall.

RAHEEM STERLING – 8

By far Liverpool’s best performer for 120 minutes – up until he gave the ball away which lead to Toure conceding the penalty for the equaliser. Sterling was strong, energetic, creative. Everything that Liverpool’s attack, on the whole, wasn’t.

RICKIE LAMBERT – 4

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Heading for an exit? Liverpool's Rickie Lambert looks dejected as Middlesbrough score an equalising goal during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Ponderous. Poor on the ball, lack of movement off it. Failed to make any impression in a positive manner in the final third. Lambert looks like a player who needs to be playing regularly to get the best out of him, and that isn’t happening at Liverpool.

SUBS:

MARIO BALOTELLI – 5

Came on and provided more than Lambert but wasn’t at his best.

SUSO – 6.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's 'Suso' Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Saenz De La Torre celebrates scoring the second goal against Middlesbrough during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Took his goal well and generally did well, good in possession at a crucial part of the game. Perhaps unfortunate that he wasn’t involved earlier, or from the start.

JORDAN WILLIAMS – 6.5

Showed great character making his debut under such circumstances, simple and tidy in possession.

Drama aplenty at Anfield on a wet night in the League Cup; this time it wasn’t Roy Hodgson stood slumping after a defeat but fans and players alike in disbelief at an incredible THIRTY penalty record.

Goals from Jordan Rossiter and Suso put Liverpool 1-0 and 2-1 up respectively, but on each occasion Brendan Rodgers‘ side were unable to hold onto the lead and squandered the opportunity to progress before the match went eventually to penalties.

20 penalties were scored in a row between the two sides, including both goalkeepers before Albert Adomah finally put his wide to end the tie.

We round up the best of the fans’ reactions to the match.

KraznyIvan in the forums:

Should never have gotten to that point but man how entertaining was that?

Glad to get the win in the end! Suso, sterling, Lallana and Enrique were really good on the night.

NZRED in the forums:

I worry about what this match will do for Sterling. 120 minutes, fucks up royally in ET to lead to the penalty and then has the chance to end it early in the PK and botches that horribly too.

It was a difficult evening for Rickie Lambert, who failed to impress on his full debut for the club.

But there was joy for 17-year-old Jordan Rossiter who scored just nine minutes into his debut for the club.

Jordan Rossiter: Enjoyed a dream start to his senior debut

Jordan Rossiter: Enjoyed a dream start to his senior debut

Liverpool held their nerve to see off Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Teenage midfielder Jordan Rossiter, a product of the Anfield academy system, needed less than 10 minutes to make a significant contribution on his senior debut, but Adam Reach equalised to send the contest past the 90-minute mark.

Suso stepped off the bench to put the hosts back in front, but a moment of madness from Kolo Toure in the dying stages presented Patrick Bamford with an opportunity to level from the spot.

A breakdown in communication between Middlesbrough goalkeeper Jamal Blackman and defender Kenneth Omeruo early on resulted in the pair being caught out of position and, despite Blackman blocking from Rickie Lambert, Rossiter took full advantage to guide the ball into the back of the net from 35 yards out.

Parity was restored just past the hour mark when Grant Leadbitter swung over a dangerous free-kick and Reach displayed the greater desire in a battle with Jose Enrique to nod in from close range.

It took until the 109th minute for Brendan Rodgers’ side to break through for a second time, with neat play from Adam Lallana leading to a scramble inside the Middlesbrough box which allowed Suso to drill low through a crowd of bodies on the line.

That looked like being enough, but a clumsy challenge from Toure on Bamford allowed the latter – on loan from Chelsea – to calmly stroke home from 12 yards in stoppage-time.

The 21-year-old then saw his effort in the resulting shoot-out saved by Mignolet, but Raheem Sterling also failed from 12 yards and with the tie taken deep into sudden death, Albert Adomah ended up being the fall guy as he blazed wide.

Liverpool 2-2 Middlesbrough (AET)

Liverpool win 14-13 on penalties

League Cup, Third Round – Tuesday, 23rd September 2014 – Anfield

Brendan Rodgers named a strong starting 11, with Simon Mignolet retained in goal and Raheem Sterling starting in attack alongside Lazar Markovic and Rickie Lambert – Lambert captaining the side on his full debut.

There was a debut for academy midfielder Jordan Rossiter, who lined up alongside Lucas and Adam Lallana in midfield.

In defence, Jose Enrique made his first start for almost 12 months after knee problems. Kolo Toure made his first start of the season.

It was a dream start for Liverpool, and 17-year-old debutant Rossiter, who scored from 30 yards after just nine minutes.

Rossiter calmly placed his shot from distance after a mix up between the Boro goalkeeper and defender which saw Lambert’s shot rebound to Rossiter 30 yards out. It was a finish of an experienced player, showing no panic to ensure his shot was on target.

Only Michael Owen has scored a goal for Liverpool as a younger player than Rossiter.

The rest of the first half was a pretty tepid performance. Both sides had a few half chances but Liverpool’s lack of clear cut chances remained a concern. The Reds’ only shot on target in the opening 45 was Rossiter’s goal from distance with the keeper out of position.

Sterling was, as ever, Liverpool’s most attacking threat. The teenager and Lallana showed some nice touches but Lambert struggled to hold the ball up.

Mignolet made a superb save from Tomlin after a Boro corner was cleared. Boro’s best chance was, surprise, a unmarked chance off a corner.

The atmosphere at Anfield on a wet night on Merseyside saw the Liverpool crowd quiet and the away fans sing obsessively about Scousers, Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli. Bizarre.

HT: Liverpool 1-0 Middlesbrough

The second half continued in much the same fashion, with Liverpool lacking fluidity and struggling to create any clear cut chances.

Middlesbrough then hit an equaliser, with Adam Reach heading home Grant Leadbitter’s free-kick from close range in the 63rd minute. Another goal conceded from a set-piece.

Boro almost took the lead in the 77th minute with Clayton’s shot saved from distance and Toure putting in a good block to deny the forward on the rebound.

And the visitors had another chance five minutes before full time, Clayton going close at the near post after a good reverse ball from Tomlin.

Youngster Rossiter made way for another debutant, fellow academy graduate Jordan Williams.

Liverpool failed to make any clear cut chance and only a penalty appeal in the 93rd minute was of any significance. Extra-time beckoned.

FT: Liverpool 1-1 Middlesbrough

Liverpool’s breakthrough arrived in the 108th minute, good link play between Sterling, Lallana and Enrique saw the ball fall to Suso in the middle of the box to finish for his first goal for the club.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's 'Suso' Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Saenz De La Torre celebrates scoring the second goal against Middlesbrough during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Much like last week against Ludorogets though, Liverpool failed to add to their lead or close out the game and in the third minute of stoppage time in extra time, Sterling gave the ball away in midfield and Toure rashly gave away a penalty. Which was coolly dispatched by Bamford, sending the game to a penalty shootout.

FT AET: Liverpool 2-2 Middlesbrough

So to penalties and one of the most incredible shootouts you are likely to see. Liverpool had the chance to win it through Sterling, but his penalty was saved, sending it to sudden death.

Sterling was the only player to miss out of 15 penalties taken for Liverpool. Balotelli, Lucas, Lallana, Suso all scored two, while Williams, Toure, Sakho, Manquillo, Enrique and even Mignolet scored theirs.

Alberto Adoma eventually put his spot kick wide to give Liverpool victory.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Manquillo, Toure, Sakho, Enrique, Lucas, Rossiter (Williams), Lallana, Sterling, Markovic (Suso, 98), Lambert (Balotelli).

Subs: Jones, Sktrel, Moreno, Borini.

Middlesbrough: Blackman; Fredericks, Ayala, Omeruo, Friend; Adomah, Leadbitter, Clayton, Reach; Tomlin, Kike.

Subs: Dimi, Husband, Gibson, Nsue, Vossen, Bamford, Wildschut.
