Steven Gerrard: Anfield farewell

Steven Gerrard: Anfield farewell

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be given a guard of honour for his final match at Anfield with Crystal Palace the visitors (5:30pm).

The 34-year-old is likely to start alongside Jordan Henderson in midfield as manager Brendan Rodgers expects to have the same squad which drew at Chelsea last weekend.

After being sidelined by a hamstring injury for five weeks defender Mamadou Sakho trained this week as did striker Mario Balotelli, who did not make the squad at Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace have a clean bill of health for Saturday's Premier League trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

Boss Alan Pardew has revealed no new injury concerns, but hinted at several changes from the line-up that lost 2-1 to Manchester United.

Academy winger Sullay Kaikai could be among several youngsters to make the trip to Merseyside.

Steven Gerrard: Taking his coaching badges

Steven Gerrard: Taking his coaching badges

Steven Gerrard will leave this summer with his reputation secured as the best player in Liverpool's history but he admits that will count for nothing if he wants to return in an official capacity.

The 34-year-old plays at Anfield for the final time on Saturday before his move to Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer but questions have already been asked about when he will be back.

There is the potential for him to return on loan during Major League Soccer's close-season but more likely is a role on the coaching staff once his playing days are over.

He has already had conversations with chairman Tom Werner and manager Brendan Rodgers about his longer-term thinking but Gerrard, in keeping with the attitude he has had throughout his playing career, is only concerned with being able to make a difference.

"I've certainly got ambitions to stay in the game, I'm currently taking my UEFA coaching badges and trying to progress up that ladder," he said.

"But I think to take a position or role at this football club first of all you have to be good enough.

"You never take a role here on reputation or name; the demands and the expectations at this football club are so high I think you'd be very naive and stupid to take a role just because you're Steven Gerrard or because you've had a good career on the pitch.

"I think in a couple of years' time, when I've come out of the city for a bit and reflected, if there's a role on offer that I feel I can contribute in and I'm good enough for then I'll certainly consider it.

"I've been coming to this club since I've been eight years of age and I do feel as if I can contribute in some role in the future."

Gerrard has worked under a host of managers during his 17-year professional career and said he would hope to have learned something from all of them if the time came to move into coaching himself.

"I've been very lucky to work with some fantastic managers over the years. With Brendan I've enjoyed the last three years with him and I almost wish I met him a lot earlier, when I was in the peak of my playing days," he added.

"Getting to play under Kenny Dalglish, someone who I watched many tapes of and is my dad's hero, was a wonderful experience as well.

"Roy Hodgson's time didn't work out here but I've got a good relationship with him, more so with England of course.

"Rafa Benitez, who we shared Istanbul with, tactically as a player he improved me so much.

"I owe an awful lot to Gerard Houllier. He was almost like a father figure and I won my first three trophies under Gerard.

"He gave me the captaincy at 23, which was a very bold thing to do at a club this size.

"It's difficult to pick one, or pick who I like the most, who I thought was the best, but as a whole I've been so lucky to work with so many."

Rodgers has left the door open for Gerrard to return but admits he does not know whether that will be in a playing capacity or in an off-field capacity.

"I haven't spoken about (a loan from Galaxy). It is something we will see how it pans out," Rodgers said.

"Steven has always made it clear, whatever capacity he will feel he can help the club, it is something he will look to do and if that is in a player perspective it is something we can look at another time.

"If coaching is a route he wants to go down when he comes back from America it is something we will discuss in more detail.

"I've brought former players back to work in different capacities and Steven is one I felt, when his time as a player was over here, he would certainly be someone I'd love to work with.

"When I spoke to him it wasn't something he was interested in, he was still focused on wanting to play every minute of every game, but when his time comes that will maybe open a door for the coming years."

Brendan Rodgers has commended Steven Gerrard on his Liverpool career and says he will miss him "as a man".

Ahead of Gerrard's final game at Anfield after 17 years with his boyhood club, Rodgers assured him of a starting place against Crystal Palace on Saturday and hailed his captain for his service to the team, the club, and the city of Liverpool.

"I will miss Steven Gerrard as a man. I think both our interests are purely devoted to Liverpool Football Club," the Reds manager said.

"He will be missed because our relationship is strong, we communicate well and having him not here will leave a huge hole. He’s irreplaceable but we have got to keep moving forward as a club and as a team.

"I asked a lot of my staff to describe Steven in one word and I’d use the word 'Liverpool’. What Steven has given to this city, politicians haven’t given. He's a wonderful symbol for the people and he’s very much about looking after his people.

"Today is about commemorating the career of a wonderful player. He is one of the very few genuine world-class players who is around the game. He played 42 games in my first season, 39 last season and 38 so far this season - that shows his value and importance to me."

Gerrard held his own press conference on Thursday in which he heralded Rodgers and admitted he wished they had worked together long before the former Swansea boss moved to Merseyside in 2012.

Former England captain Gerrard, set to mark his 706th and penultimate appearance for the club, says he would like to return as a coach one day but Rodgers admits this has not yet been discussed.

"It’s not something we have spoken about. Our focus has been on finishing season strong," he said.

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard: England team-mates will become MLS rivals

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard: England team-mates will become MLS rivals

Frank Lampard is looking forward to renewing rivalries with Steven Gerrard when the pair head to the United States to kick off their MLS careers.

Lampard will join New York City at the end of his loan spell with Manchester City while Gerrard ends his career-long association with Liverpool to join the LA Galaxy.

Gerrard plays his final game at Anfield on Saturday against Crystal Palace and Lampard had nothing but praise for the midfielder, who he has battled in the Premier League for over a decade and played alongside for England.

“We were in the England squad, as captain and vice-captain, at the last World Cup and I certainly respect him hugely – I always have,” Lampard said.

“But when you are going up against each other you can kind of get caught up in that. I was a Chelsea man and he is Mr Liverpool.

“I had John (Terry) next to me, he had Jamie Carragher – it was one of those things. It was all healthy stuff but as you get older you mellow slightly and you just respect him for what he’s done in his career.

“What a fantastic player he has been for Liverpool and England, and he’s a fantastic bloke. He’s a family man, I’ve always known him as a good lad and a great player.

“I think it’s great for us that we have both made the decision to go there. We’re at the back end of our careers – we know that – but we’re still very driven and we’ll want to do well.

“I’m pleased he is there. It’s great for the league, it’s great for us at this time in our lives to go and play there and I look forward to playing against him there.”

Steven Gerrard: Hopes Liverpool will be able to add to squad this summer

Steven Gerrard: Hopes Liverpool will be able to add to squad this summer

Steven Gerrard has called on Liverpool's owners to give Brendan Rodgers a decent transfer budget to push the club on next season.

Gerrard is readying himself for his final Anfield appearance on Saturday night, when the Reds play their last home game of his farewell season against Crystal Palace.

The 34-year-old will leave Liverpool at the end of the season to move to the MLS with the LA Galaxy.

Gerrard hopes Liverpool will be able to persuade young stars Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe to sign new deals, but he also feels adding quality from outside will help them challenge for major honours.

Liverpool find themselves outside the top four as the season winds down, having struggled for goals in the absence of Daniel Sturridge.

There’s a core of players here with huge potential,” Gerrard said.

“I’m hoping the owners will back Brendan again, and bring in that bit of quality that help us go one step further next year.

“We’ve gone very close in a couple of cup competitions this year and we’ve also come close to the top four positions, and that’s with losing arguably the best player in the world last year in Luis Suarez.

“We’ve also not had our star striker available for most of the season in Daniel Sturridge, so to come so close without them two available…I think we’ve done okay but I think next year we can go one better.”

As he prepares for his final game at Anfield for Liverpool, we look back at Steven Gerrard’s most memorable goals.

5. v Southampton – Anfield – 2001

Gerrard is renowned for his long-range shooting ability, although the midfielder cannot have hit too many better than this superb effort to open the scoring against the Saints at Anfield 14 years ago.

Picking up possession of the ball midway through Southampton’s half, Gerrard advanced on goal before hitting a right-footed rocket that left Paul Jones in the visitors’ goal clutching at thin air.

4. v Everton – Goodison Park – 2001

Gerrard managed to score 10 goals against the Reds' bitter rivals during his Liverpool career, and this effort is the most memorable.

The ball was worked across to a rampaging Gerrard, who was full of confidence after starring and scoring for England in the famous 5-1 win over Germany. Despite a tough angle, the midfielder hammered home into the far corner and went charging down the touchline, cupping his ear.

3. v Newcastle – St James’ Park – 2007

The Liverpool captain is not too bad at taking free kicks either, as this sweetly struck effort to give the Reds the lead at Newcastle eight years ago shows.

Fellow midfielder Lucas touched the ball across to Gerrard, with the Englishman then beating Shay Given with a piledriver from distance to put the Merseysiders well on the way to a 3-0 win at St James’.

2. v Middlesbrough – Anfield – 2005

Another in Gerrard’s long list of memorable strikes from distance, this wonder goal to draw his side level against Middlesbrough eight years ago really does take some beating.

Gerrard controlled a crossfield pass from John Arne Riise with his right foot, before letting the ball bounce and then thumping an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net past a helpless Brad Jones in Boro’s goal.

1. v Manchester United – Anfield - 2001

This goal made Manchester United sit up and notice that Liverpool had a genuine world-class talent on their hands.

Charging through the United midfield, Gerrard got his head up and lashed a strike past Fabien Barthez from 30 yards to set Liverpool on their way to a first home win against Manchester United since December 1995.
