It has been an extremely productive transfer window for Liverpool, and two more signings in much-needed areas of the pitch would make it the perfect summer, writes Henry Jackson.
Much of the end-of-season talk in May and June was about ensuring Liverpool did not repeat their 2002 and 2009 errors in the summer transfer window.
Both the 2001/02 and 2008/09 campaigns saw the Reds finish second in the Premier League, but their business the following summer on both occasions was, quite frankly, disastrous. Twice they had the chance to push on and become even stronger, but they failed.
The names El Hadji Diouf, Salif Diao and Alberto Aquilani are enough to make even the toughest Liverpool fanatic weep.
There was a slight apprehension that the same thing could happen this time around, but Brendan Rodgers has passed with flying colours where his predecessors, Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez, failed.
Improved Defence
Although the Reds’ defensive performance against Manchester City left a lot to be desired, it would be very knee-jerk to judge the likes of Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno on one game. They, along with Javier Manquillo, will almost certainly help eradicate last season’s woes at the back, and are still adjusting to life on Merseyside.
There is certainly an argument to say that all three should be in Brendan Rodgers’ first-choice starting XI, if that is even a thing these days, what with squad rotation and alike. Moreno is a clear upgrade on both Jon Flanagan and Jose Enrique, while Lovren has a leadership and dominance lacking at centre-back since the retirement of Jamie Carragher.
Manquillo, meanwhile, impressed on his debut against Southampton, and was not dissimilar in style to the reliable Alvaro Arbeloa during his Liverpool days. Glen Johnson is simply not good enough to justify being a regular anymore.
Midfield Depth
With Lucas Leiva seemingly surplus to requirements under Rodgers and age catching up with Steven Gerrard, midfield reinforcements were paramount this summer.
The signings of Emre Can and Adam Lallana will add undoubted depth and quality to the Reds’ midfield, and with constant Premier League and Champions League football until at least Christmas, it is an area of the pitch they need to keep fresh.
Can will add dynamism and defensive quality in central areas, and although he looks older, at just 20 there is a huge amount of potential there. The German has an imposing nature about him not unlike Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, and the fact that he can also fill in at left-back is an added bonus.
Lallana moved for big money from Southampton, having been deservedly nominated for the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award last season. Some detractors may balk at the price the club paid for the 26-year-old, but he is hugely talented and versatile. His style of play matches Rodgers’ philosophy down to the ground too.
Added Attacking Quality
Lazar Markovic is a potentially sensational signing by the club. The 20-year-old is one of the most exciting young players in Europe, and will flourish under Rodgers. There seems to be a great self-confidence about him, and his cameo against City was very promising.
He will add pace in wide attacking areas that was, perhaps, lacking barring Raheem Sterling in 2013/14, and like his 19-year-old teammate, he can also be just as effective playing centrally behind the striker.
Rickie Lambert has fulfilled every Liverpool fans dream, joining his boyhood club in a move that surprised many this summer. It is a clever signing, however, as not only is it guaranteed that Lambert will give his all in every game he plays, but his aerial presence and hold-up play offers something completely different to the rest of the forwards in the squad.
The 32-year-old will be far from a regular, injuries permitting, but he will prove his worth over the course of the season, chipping in with goals at key times.
Divock Origi was signed from Lille, but has returned to the Ligue 1 side on loan this season. He is very much seen as an exciting long-term investment.
The Final Pieces Of The Jigsaw
There are probably just two areas of the pitch that still need to be added to in order to make it the perfect transfer window for Liverpool.
A backup goalkeeper who will put pressure on Simon Mignolet to be first-choice is much-needed, with the Belgian perhaps almost too comfortable at the moment. Brad Jones is not good enough to be second-choice for a Champions League team.
Argentina number one Sergio Romero is certainly one who fits the bill, and he has been linked with a move to Liverpool from Monaco a number of times. Other contenders include Cardiff’s David Marshall and Karl Darlow of Nottingham Forest, as Jack Lusby mentioned back in May.
Another defensive midfielder would be the final piece in Rodgers’ transfer puzzle, with Lucas’ rumoured move to Napoli set to leave a hole in the squad in that area.
Someone like Alex Song of Barcelona would be a good replacement for the 27-year Brazilian, with the Echo linking him with a move to Anfield on Thursday. The former Arsenal man is far from a world-beater, but he would be a reliable option when called upon.
If a goalkeeper and defence-minded midfielder can be bought in between now and ‘Deadline Day’ on Monday, the likes of Rodgers and Ian Ayre will be deserving of a huge pat on the back for their efforts over the last few months.
Those 2002 and 2009 disasters have fortunately not come close to being repeated again.
Where do you think Liverpool still need to strengthen? Who has been the Reds’ best signing of the summer? Let us know in the comments section below.

Bolton Wanderers have ruled themselves out of the running to sign Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe and striker Max Clayton from Crewe Alexandra.
The Sky Bet Championship side have been interested in recruiting the attacking duo before the end of the summer transfer window.
However, Bolton manager Dougie Freedman has now admitted that they are unable to raise the funds that would be needed to sign them.
While 18-year-old Ibe could join Derby County on a season-long loan deal before Monday’s deadline, 20-year-old Clayton has travelled to Denmark to speak with FC Midtjylland.
“Jordon looks like he is going to Derby,” The Bolton News quotes Freedman as saying. “It looks like we have missed out on that one once again.
“The contribution that we would have had to make financially was too difficult for us to meet.”
Freedman added on Clayton: “He’s a good player and we liked him – he’s the kind of player we should be bringing to the club. But the fee that Crewe wanted is out of our reach.”

With Alberto Moreno making his debut for Liverpool in the 3-1 loss away to Manchester City on Monday night, Jack Lusby provides an in-depth analysis of the Spaniard’s performance.
Monday night’s trip to the Etihad Stadium proved to be a disappointing affair, with Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool given a lesson in cutting-edge attacking play by league favourites Manchester City.
A brace from Montenegrin striker Stevan Jovetic was followed by an instant return by substitute Sergio Aguero as the Citizens decimated a solid 35 minutes of exceptional pressing play by the Reds.
Good work by Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert forced Pablo Zabaleta to concede an own goal to reduce the deficit, but Rodgers’ side were unable to make more of an impression.
Prior to the game, one name stood out in the Liverpool team-sheet: 22-year-old left-back Alberto Moreno.
The £12 million summer signing made his first start for the Reds, on the left-hand side of a defence which also consisted of centre-backs Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel, with Glen Johnson on the opposite flank.
Joining from Sevilla, this was some stage for Moreno to make his Liverpool debut.
It will be an unhappy memory for the young defender, but how did Moreno perform on his first outing for Rodgers’ outfit?
(Video courtesy of MostarLFC)
Speaking before the game as part of his pre-match analysis for Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher spoke of Moreno:
“I talked to Xabi Alonso as soon as we signed Moreno. He likened him with Jordi Alba, and that’s a statement right there.”
This is high praise indeed, with Barcelona left-back Alba the premier option for the Spanish giants and, in turn, the Spanish national side.
Expectations were amped and a debut away to Manchester City was somewhat of a baptism of fire for the young defender, but Moreno initially performed encouragingly.
Most notably, in the early stages, was the Spaniard’s attacking contribution.
Moreno was fearless on the ball and intelligent in terms of output; whilst some full-backs offer a reductive bursting run forward followed by a tame, uninspired cross, Moreno proved to have a sharper edge than this.
Firstly, this could be seen as the 22-year-old saw his forward foray thwarted by a doubling, or tripling, up on the right-hand side of the City defence.
Moreno instead cut this play short and opted to take the ball inside, eventually finding Raheem Sterling with a precise pass.
This ability will give Liverpool further options from the defensive flank.
In the first half, Moreno also proved his defensive capabilities.
Fellow Liverpool left-back and compatriot Jose Enrique is enduringly criticised for a lackadaisical defensive attitude.
However, Moreno proved with a determined block to stymie City’s Zabaleta on 18 minutes that this isn’t a prominent feature of his own game.
With Liverpool dominating the opening stages, Zabaleta saw no joy on the right flank, mainly due to the attentions of Moreno.
This transition from defence to attack continued in earnest for Moreno.
A gut-busting run down the left by-line on 20 minutes saw the youngster outpace French midfielder Samir Nasri, allowing Moreno the space to produce an intelligent, low cross—unfortunately blocked.
Collecting the resulting rebound, Moreno drew a foul from Zabaleta with some great work, shielding the ball from the Argentine’s grasp.
Soon after, Moreno produced another teasing ball across the City six-yard box—these are the sorts of balls that players such as Sterling and Daniel Sturridge will thrive on with well-timed runs.
According to WhoScored, the Spaniard attempting four crosses in this tie; taking this as an “average”, this dwarfs last season’s output by Glen Johnson with 1.75 crosses on average per game.
As Liverpool dominated, the majority of possession could be seen to be played down the left flank, and this is largely due to the success of Moreno.
However, unfortunately, the left-back’s performance soured late into the half, as the exceptional Zabaleta began to assert his authority.
This resulted, eventually, in Liverpool conceding the opening goal on 40 minutes.
A large measure of the blame can be placed at the feet of Moreno, with the No. 18 hesitating with a clearance, this allowed Jovetic to nip in and fire home; although Lovren and Steven Gerrard were also at fault.
This lapse sullied an otherwise impressive first half for the new left-back.
Moreno’s second half was somewhat muted in comparison, with the defender’s confidence perhaps affected by the goal.
However, the left-back looked determined to make amends for his error, particularly with a lung-bursting run to block an onrushing Edin Dzeko to thwart a second City goal on 49 minutes.
This didn’t last long, however, as the Reds were duly punished as Jovetic scored his second just five minutes later.
More great play by Jovetic saw the forward play the ball out wide, then make an intelligent run to receive it in the 18-yard box and strike home.
Nasri provided the assist, and it can be argued that Moreno failed to track the run of the Frenchman; however, much debate has arisen post-match due to the positional discrepancies between the left and right sides of defence.
Was this due to Lovren’s poor leadership, or Skrtel and Johnson’s poor positioning?
Finally, Aguero’s goal saw the Argentine escape the attentions of the Croatian centre-back, sanctioning Liverpool’s misery—however, little blame can fall at the feet of Moreno this time around.
Moreno perhaps gave the most encouraging forecast of his Liverpool future with a fine passage of play involving substitute Lazar Markovic (circled below); a clever one-two leading to Moreno almost creating a goalscoring chance.
The pair will be vital on the left-hand side in the future.
However, suffering an injury late on, this will hamper the left-back’s immediate progress within Rodgers’ squad.
Overall Analysis
A mixed bag of a debut, Moreno gave a solid account of himself in terms of both defence and attack, but will need to adapt to the fast-paced physical style of the Premier League.
Problems have arisen over Liverpool’s defence as a whole, and this unit must be fine-tuned, and fast; an unsettled selection with potential lay-offs for Moreno, Johnson and Skrtel will not help this.
On his debut for the club, Moreno can be encouraged by a promising display, but must keep his concentration for future endeavours.

Glen Johnson has entered the final year of his contract at Liverpool, but no extension talks have been held as yet.
The England international will become a free agent next summer if fresh terms are not tabled to keep him at Anfield.
Johnson claims to be ‘relaxed’ about the situation, with his focus locked on playing his part in what he hopes will be a successful 2014/15 campaign.
He is prepared to put any discussions regarding his future on hold and will only address the issue of being able to talk to potential suitors in the New Year if nothing changes before that point.
Johnson told the Liverpool Echo: "I’m very relaxed about my contract.
"There are no talks going on with the club at the moment. There were minor talks towards the end of last season but nothing else.
"I’ve loved playing my football here from day one. I’m more than happy here. But obviously I can only talk to the club about it when they want to speak to me."
The 30-year-old full-back, who has spent the last five years on Merseyside, added: “In January, I could (talk to other clubs), but I’ll worry about that when January comes.
"At the minute I’m playing for Liverpool and I’m happy here. I’m more than willing to stay.
"I’ll just concentrate on things here week by week. The manager has picked me so far. That shows he wants me here."

Doubts persist over the wisdom of Liverpool's move for Mario Balotelli, but his on-pitch record suggests he's worth the risk, writes Adam Bate.
When it comes to the art of signing players, few did it better than Brian Clough and Peter Taylor. In the latter's book With Clough by Taylor he explained some of the science behind it in detailing how Nottingham Forest actively sought to buy players they perceived to have personal problems.
The theory was that this meant their market value might not be in line with their ability - hence the opportunity to snare a bargain. With Liverpool securing the services of Mario Balotelli on a three-year deal for a price of £16million, it's tempting to conclude Brendan Rodgers is also a believer.
Of course, football is not just about mere talent. It's Balotelli's attitude that has many doubting the wisdom of the transfer. "We are certainly losing a great player, but we gain something more in team spirit and hunger," said AC Milan coach Pippo Inzaghi. Delicate but damning.
Inzaghi's former international team-mate Christian Vieri wasn't quite so equivocal in his assessment, describing the transfer as the best piece of business in Milan's history. Closer to home, former Liverpool boss Graeme Souness has referred to the move as an "enormous gamble" by Rodgers.
"It's a gamble I don't think he needs to take because he has a very strong group of players," he told the Sunday Times. "The harmony looks good but he may find, like every previous manager of Balotelli, that he will spend more time talking about him, spending time with him and defending him than he will the rest of the group put together. It's a high-risk signing and I wouldn't want him."
Balotelli began his Premier League career with a stormy spell at Manchester City
Ostensibly, it does seem as though Rodgers is a sucker for punishment - a view not exactly quashed by his own one-word assessment of what Balotelli will bring to Liverpool. "Trouble," Rodgers told the Monday Night Football panel.
With Luis Suarez off the books, the Liverpool manager is taking on another project. Not so much a case of inviting trouble to his Melwood door but paying for the privilege; a peculiar example of Munchausen syndrome by proxy with Rodgers revelling in the role of full-time carer.
But this view does Rodgers a disservice. He appreciates that to take Liverpool to the next level, his responsibility is to identify world-class players at an affordable price. When it comes to the vast potential of Lazar Markovic, it's a gamble due to a lack of evidence. When it comes to the vast potential of Balotelli, it's a gamble due to too much evidence.
The question Rodgers will be asking is how much of the Balotelli circus represents background noise that can be ignored. Can he make the difference with a player deemed "unmanageable" by Jose Mourinho? And how much can Balotelli really scupper Liverpool's momentum?
These are the intangibles. But when it comes to a cold analysis of the on-field evidence, there is plenty to suggest this is a player who can contribute. While Sergio Aguero was the hero and Edin Dzeko remains in favour, it is a curiosity of Manchester City's title-winning season of 2011/12 that the soon-to-be-discarded Balotelli had the best strike rate of anyone in that campaign.
Balotelli's goals per 90 minutes record was superior to his Man City team-mates in 2011/12
He scored 13 goals in 1325 minutes of football and bettered that in his first season with Milan, netting 12 times in Serie A in just 1145 minutes. That's almost goal-a-game territory and was the best strike rate of any player in the country. Even in a largely underwhelming final year with the Rossoneri, Balotelli maintained a respectable level of scoring with 14 goals in 25 league appearances.
The key is extrapolation. The Italian's career strike rate would see him net 23 goals a season if he played the full 38 games. But is that ever likely to be possible with Balotelli? This is a virtuoso performer rather than one in harmony with the orchestra. Balotelli had more shots than any player in Serie A last season despite missing 13 games. Some found the top corner. Many were ill-advised.
But there are some encouraging signs too. After assisting just one Premier League goal in his time at Manchester City - that pass to Aguero - and none in his first season with Milan, there were six of them last season including three in his final half a dozen appearances.
The Italian boasted an impressive goalscoring record in his time at AC Milan
Time is on his side and improvement is possible. Everyone from Rodgers to the player's own agent Mino Raiola seems to accept that this is his last chance. "Either it works here or it's a bust," Raiola told Corriere della Sera. "If it goes wrong? Mario is 24. He no longer has the excuse of his age."
However, another way of looking at this situation is that he's only 24 years old. That's younger than Daniel Sturridge. Younger than Jordan Henderson. Younger than Joe Allen, and significantly younger than Adam Lallana. Balotelli will not be expected to carry Liverpool's hopes as he did at Milan, merely to make a contribution.
"Mario played well for six or seven months, giving a decisive push for them to enter the Champions League," added Raiola. "But then you could see he is not ready to be a leader. Will he ever be a leader? It's not mandatory that every player has to be a leader.
"Not everyone is born to be a leader and a good striker is not always a leader either. Mario needs to get this pressure off his shoulders. He must feel free to score goals and that's it. I sought out for him a team where he can be an important element without being asked to be a leader. Liverpool have Steven Gerrard. There Mario will be protected and can give his best."
What that new role at Liverpool will involve remains a source of intrigue. There are suggestions that Inzaghi favoured a more traditional number 9 able to lead the line as well as the team, but that's not necessarily what Rodgers requires. He has that option in Rickie Lambert. He needs someone to replicate the movement of Suarez.
Balotelli for Man City (left, v Wigan) compared to Suarez's last game for Liverpool (right, v Newcastle)
Balotelli is not an obvious mimic, having faced accusations of being too static, but he does like to drift around and that could work well if others can fit around him. The touch map of his last 90 minutes of Premier League action offers hope in that it is perhaps surprisingly similar to that of Suarez's last Liverpool appearance, suggesting a roaming role that favours the left channel.
The role is there waiting for him, the team environment is in place and he is saddled with neither a huge transfer fee nor unreasonable expectations. This is a player with the goalscoring record and the ability to more than make the transfer work. As Raiola says: "Now it's up to him." But when it comes to Mario Balotelli, it seems that can be the hardest part of all to get right.
