Mario Balotelli was recalled to the Liverpool squad, perhaps surprisingly, then brought on to replace Lazar Markovic on 70 minutes. His cameo appearance though failed to impress.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli and Chelsea's captain John Terry during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Many fans were bemused to see Balotelli replace Markovic instead of Adam Lallana, and with hindsight that seems even more of a bad move by Brendan Rodgers. Incredibly, Lallana has the same amount of goals as Balotelli and fellow substitute Rickie Lambert have combined – a measly four all season.

The Italian, who hasn’t started a game for Liverpool since early November, produced a slack pass which gave Chelsea the free-kick from which Branislav Ivanovic headed the only goal of the game. While Balotelli’s role in the marking on the set-piece was also called into question.

Aside from his involvement in the goal, his overall performance across 50 minutes far from impressed and the football writers have given their views:

Steven Kelly, editor of the former LFC fanzine Through The Wind and Rain, writes for ESPN in his player ratings, where he gave Balotelli 4 out of 10:

Brendan Rodgers’ belief in the Italian’s ability to weave some magic and find some kind of form must surely have vanished by now. One or two decent flicks and the odd show of strength on the ball aside, most of his time was spent ambling around ineffectually, and any moment of danger was doused by his innate selfishness.

Chris Bascombe, The Telegraph‘s Liverpool correspondent wrote on twitter:

Sorry Mario. Sure there are worse but the memory fades. Chelsea, Stamford Bridge, 2015, sub-appearance. Awful.

The Echo’s Kristian Walsh marked Balotelli 5 out of 10, saying:

A poor display by the substitute. His pressing was a little better but wasted a couple of opportunities and allowed Ivanovic to wriggle free for Chelsea’s goal. Not the impact Liverpool needed.

Sam Wallace of The Independent was even more scathing, appraising:

Made three notable contributions to the match. He came on, ran down the left before he lost the ball ball shortly after coming on and blazed over from the edge of the Liverpool area. He continues to be dreadful and is generally at his best when defending throw ins. His sulking at the end of the game was fairly pathetic, too. 2

Meanwhile, the This Is Anfield fan average player rating for Balotelli is 3.3 out of 10.

Aside from the part he played in the goal, there were two wild shots from distance that wasted good chances, several lacklustre passes which gave away possession, and another failure to make a near post run when Alberto Moreno crossed from the left. All things we’ve witnessed over his time at Anfield this season.

The odd flick here and there looked nice but Liverpool lost control after his introduction, especially in the final third, and it’s no coincidence why.

Nobody is blaming Balotelli for the defeat, but his performance was again well below par. Rodgers’ decision to include him over Fabio Borini, and to sub him on instead of Lallana, have to be questioned.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his side “just weren’t clinical enough” as they dropped out of the League Cup, going down 1-0 at Chelsea on Tuesday night, 2-1 on aggregate.

Asked about alledged stamping by Blues forward Diego Costa, Rodgers told Sky Sports 1: "He's an outstanding player, an outstanding footballer.

"He has this edge to him. With Emre Can, that was poor, I felt. He could easily hurdle over the young player and he directs his studs right on to his ankle, which could've been nasty.

"And again the one with Martin Skrtel. There's no need to do it. That's the sad thing of it.

"He's a top-class player and he's clever enough that the officials don't see it.

"It was poor from him. He doesn't need to do it. It wasn't good for the game.

"The referee didn't see it. When you see it afterwards, it's disappointing." PA

Branislav Ivanovic's extra-time goal was enough to secure Chelsea's place in the Capital One Cup final as they beat Liverpool 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.

In what was a pulsating cup tie at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Chelsea were lucky to keep their full complement of players on the pitch after Diego Costa appeared to stamp on Emre Can in the first half.

However, referee Michael Oliver was unmoved just as he was when Jose Mourinho's side thought they should have had a penalty after Martin Skrtel's challenge on Costa midway through the first-half.

In what was an end-to-end semi-final second-leg contest, Liverpool had the better chances of the first period but Alberto Moreno and Philippe Coutinho were both denied by excellent saves from Thibaut Courtois.

After the break, Costa was once again involved in controversy as he appeared to stamp again, this time on Skrtel, but once again there was no action taken against the Spain striker.

He could have made his luck count when bearing down on goal midway through the second half, but with just the goalkeeper to beat, Simon Mignolet made a vital last-ditch tackle.

Both sides had their chances to win it at the end of normal time but in what was a tale of two Belgian goalkeepers, Courtois and Mignolet were in inspired form as the scores stayed locked at 0-0.

However, it did not take long for the deadlock to be broken in extra-time as Ivanovic rose highest to head home Willian’s free-kick and book his side’s place in the Capital One Cup final against Tottenham or Sheffield United at Wembley on Sunday, March 1.

Chelsea boss Mourinho, who made nine changes to his side following the shock home defeat by Bradford, spent much of the night fuming, but it was Reds boss Brendan Rodgers who had reason to feel most aggrieved early on as Costa should have been sent off for stamping on Can's ankle.

Minutes later, Kurt Zouma, in the Chelsea side in place of Gary Cahill, misjudged a long ball and Raheem Sterling looked to take advantage - but the Frenchman used his pace well to recover and stop the England forward in his tracks.

Costa should then have had a penalty when tripped by Skrtel, but referee Michael Oliver waved away appeals, much to the astonishment and anger of Mourinho.

Twice Liverpool spurned chances to take the lead as Courtois saved well from Moreno and then Coutinho, while Mignolet twice denied Costa at the other end.

Mourinho raged at Oliver at half-time and his mood would not have improved when Cesc Fabregas was forced to leave the field minutes after the break to be replaced by Ramires, especially with the visit of Manchester City looming on Saturday.

Costa was once again in the thick of the action as he appeared to stamp again, this time on Skrtel, but once again the striker avoided any punishment.

He could have made Liverpool pay midway through the second half but Mignolet was on hand to make a vital last-ditch tackle with Costa bearing down on goal. Seconds later, Sterling was the one trying to latch onto a misplaced pass but this time it was Courtois who was quick off his line, saving at the feet of the striker.

There was more Mourinho anger when Jordan Henderson avoided a second booking for handball late on in the game and his displeasure with the officials continued into extra-time as he missed Ivanovic's header while talking to fourth official Phil Dowd.

With Manchester City the visitors to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday, the additional half hour was less than welcome, but they had the final word as Ivanovic headed home Willian’s free-kick from close range to book their place at Wembley.

They now await the winner of Sheffield United’s clash with Tottenham on Wednesday night, with the first silverware of the season up for grabs on March 1.

Liverpool lost 1-0 to Chelsea after extra-time on Tuesday, and we look at how those associated with the Reds reacted on social media during and after a pulsating contest.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Liverpool's Emre Can clashes with Chelsea's Diego Costa during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It was a heartbreaking evening for Liverpool, who performed so valiantly throughout a fantastic game, and more than matched supposedly the best team in the country for 120 minutes.

Branislav Ivanovic’s 95th-minute header was the difference between the two sides on the night, but there was so much more to it than that.

Diego Costa twice stamped on Reds players- Emre Can and Martin Skrtel- and clashed with Steven Gerrard, but inexcusably went unpunished, while Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson were both fortunate not to receive red cards too.

There were terrific individual performances all over the pitch by Liverpool players, whether it be Simon Mignolet‘s heroics in goal, Lucas’ never-say-die attitude in the middle of the park or Philippe Coutinho‘s magical footwork in attacking areas.

Substitute Mario Balotelli certainly has a lot to answer for after a less than satisfactory cameo, and he seemed to ruin what had been a fantastic team effort.

Here is how social media reacted to the game.

‘ShadesOfRed’ on the forum:

There was a lot of fear among some that Chelsea would embarrass us over two legs and that certainly hasn’t been the case. Gutted… but much more optimistic about the second half of the season especially with Sturridge coming back.

‘ptt’ on the forum:

Brilliant game, simply wonderful. We need a striker, we know that. We knew that when Suarez left. But after going toe to toe with the league leaders twice and only narrowly going down, it’s obvious that last season wasn’t just down to Suarez.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in their League Cup semi-final second-leg showdown at Stamford Bridge, with Branislav Ivanovic’s extra-time header enough to send the Reds crashing out.

Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool

League Cup – Stamford Bridge – Tuesday, 27th January 2015

Goals: Ivanovic (94)

Pre Match

Brendan Rodgers stuck with exactly the same starting eleven from the first-leg at Anfield, with Martin Skrtel, Alberto Moreno, Lucas Leiva and Steven Gerrard all returning having been rested against Bolton. There was no place for Daniel Sturridge in the squad.

First-half

The game got off to a ferocious start, with tackles flying in and Diego Costa fortunate not to be at least booked for a deliberate stamp on Emre Can.

Skrtel was lucky not to concede a penalty after a needlessly rash tackle on Costa soon after, but in the opening 25 minutes there had been no good chances of note.

Alberto Moreno was denied excellently by Thibaut Courtois in the 27th minute, after a superb Gerrard pass, and the Belgian then denied Philippe Coutinho minutes later.

Liverpool were much the better side throughout the first-half, defending doggedly, breaking at pace and creating chances. They hadn’t been ruthless enough in front of goal, however, which has been their downfall in big games in the past.

Oscar twice had efforts on goal for the hosts that went harmlessly wide, as Jose Mourinho’s side started to threaten more. At half-time it was goalless though, and the Reds had been highly impressive.

Second-half

There were no changes at the interval, as a finely poised contest got back underway. Cesc Fabregas was replaced by Ramires soon after the restart though.

Tempers began to flare, particularly between Costa and Skrtel, as the hatred between the two clubs started to become more and more evident.

Liverpool struggled to impose themselves on the game as much as in the opening 45 minutes, and the brilliant Eden Hazard fired a superb strike just wide after 58 minutes.

Simon Mignolet saved brilliantly with his legs from a deflected Costa shot, and at the other end Gerrard fired into the arms of Courtois. It was breathless.

Mignolet again did brilliantly to deny the dangerous Costa, thwarting him outstandingly with his legs, and Ramires struck wide from distance.

The final 20 minutes saw both sides going at each other hammer and tong, but neither team could find a winner. Extra-time was required, and Liverpool had to score in the added 30 minutes to have any chance of reaching the final.

Extra-time

Substitute Mario Balotelli wasted a terrific chance straight away, but frustratingly shot into the crowd. Lucas was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card.

In the fourth minute of extra-time Chelsea took the lead. Branislav Ivanovic headed home from a free-kick out wide, but Balotelli had lost the Serb far too easily.

Jordan Henderson had a wonderful chance to equalise but headed wide with the goal at his mercy, and it just wasn’t meant to be for Rodgers’ men.

In the second-half of extra-time the Reds desperately pressed for a goal that would take the tie to penalties. It didn’t come though, and Liverpool were out after a valiant effort in west London.

Zaman &039;The Spice Boys&039;.

Both sides had their chances to win it at the end of normal time but in what was a tale of two Belgiain goalkeepers, Courtois and Mignolet were in inspired form as the scores stayed locked at 0-0.

However, it did not take long for the deadlock to be broken in extra-time as Ivanovic rose highest to head home Willian’s free-kick and book his side’s place in the Capital Cup final against Tottenham or Sheffield United at Wembley on Sunday, March 1.

Chelsea boss Mourinho, who made nine changes to his side from the shock defeat at Bradford, spent much of the night fuming, but it was Rodgers who had reason to feel most aggrieved early on as Diego Costa should have been sent off for stamping on Emre Can's ankle.

Minutes later, Kurt Zouma, in the Chelsea side in place of Gary Cahill, misjudged a long ball and Raheem Sterling looked to take advantage, however, the Frenchman used his pace well to recover and stop the England forward in his tracks.

Costa should then have had a penalty when tripped by Martin Skrtel, but referee Oliver waved away appeals, much to the astonishment and anger of Mourinho.

Twice Liverpool spurned chances to take the lead as Thibaut Courtois saved well from Alberto Moreno and then Philippe Coutinho, while Simon Mignolet twice denied Costa at the other end.

Mourinho raged at Oliver at half-time and his mood would not have improved when Cesc Fabregas was forced to leave the field minutes after half-time to be replaced by Ramires, especially with the visit of Manchester City on Saturday.

Costa was once again in the thick of the action as he appeared to stamp again, this time on Skrtel but once again the Spanish striker avoided any punishment.

He could have made Liverpool pay midway through the second-half but Mignolet was on hand to make a vital last-ditch tackle with Costa bearing down on goal. Seconds later Sterling was the on trying to latch onto a misplaced pass but this time it was Courtois who was quick off his line, saving at the feet of the striker.

They now await the winner of Sheffield United’s clash with Tottenham for the chance to win the first silverware of the season on March 1.

FT 1-0 AET (AGG 2-1)

CHELIV

Chelsea Going To Wembley...

~By Axello

Five star match...

Banyak shots chelsea diselamatkan. Highlight persembahan beliau ketika berjaya steal the ball form Costa dalam one on one. Seperti biasa bila Mignolet on form , seringkali isu no finishing dan wrong result menggerhanakan persembahan beliau.

Defensive unit berjaya mengekang free-scoring man Costa daripada mendapat walaupun single goal.

Time To move on , We lost one but we still have 2 knock out game in hand. Then the priority is the top 4. Banyak yang positif daripada yang negatif. Walaupun di extra time Curtois tak banyak kerja namun Liverpool cukup mengancam di First half.

To all my friends yg Chelsea Fans :TAHNIAH CHELSEA !

Nice campaign so far tapi Liverpool jelas tak memberi laluan mudah sperti yang diramalkan.

To my beloved Reds Fellow ,No need to be sad , keep your head up high ! We still have a good campaign running.

After a shaky start to the season, Liverpool have experienced something of a revival in recent weeks.

The Reds have won 8, drawn 7 and lost just 1 of their last sixteen games in all competitions, with Brendan Rodgers’ adoption of a 3-4-2-1 formation key to this recent success.

The two games in which the new system has impressed against superior opposition were the draws against Arsenal and Chelsea – in both games Liverpool completely dominated their opposition and were hugely unlucky to leave the pitch with just a point.

Arsenal were limited to just 36.5% possession (their lowest ever in the Premier League) as Liverpool racked up 27 shots to their opponents 7 and they went on to produce an even better performance against Chelsea, registering 19 shots compared to Chelsea’s 2. In both of these games Liverpool started without a recognised striker in their line-up, and this clearly cost them the edge when it came to clinical efficiency.

However, the imminent return of Daniel Sturridge should sort this problem out and help Liverpool return to the same sort of standards they were setting last season. As Sturridge’s return approaches, it feels as good a time as any to appraise the performance of the other players in his absence.

To successfully analyse the performance of the team I have compiled two very different sets of performance analysis statistics – fan ratings of player performance from thisisanfield.com, and statistical player ratings from whoscored.com.

Combining a qualitative measure (This Is Anfield) with a quantitative measure (WhoScored) will hopefully compensate for the failures of both analytical approaches – fans are renowned for their bias towards certain players, whilst WhoScored ratings are wholly computer-generated and as such do not give due credit to the aspects of football that are more difficult to quantify, such as positioning, movement and leadership.

I drew the ratings from Liverpool’s last 20 competitive fixtures and made sure to only use ratings of players who actually started the match – this was done to eliminate bias against players who were substituted on late in the game. I then worked out the average fan and statistical rating for each player, before simply taking the average of these two averages to get a total index rating for each player. Here are the results:

Screen Shot 2015-01-27 at 17.41.52

Although these results do make for interesting reading, it must be noted that the WhoScored ratings are far less spread out than the This Is Anfield fan ratings and this places unfair emphasis on the latter set.

To compensate for this I have also included a table in which each player is ranked within each subset and the average of their two rankings is calculated – this gives the statistical ratings and the fan ratings equal weighting, as well as enabling direct comparison. Here is the rankings table:

Screen Shot 2015-01-27 at 17.41.59

What these results show is what anybody who has watched Liverpool recently will already know – Coutinho has been our brightest spark, whilst Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Mamadou Sakho, Raheem Sterling and Lucas Leiva have all been in excellent form.

The results raise a few talking points, particularly in midfield. Although Jordan Henderson’s form has picked up somewhat in recent games (he has managed a total index rating of 7.01 over the last 10 games) his overall form this season is a far cry from what we saw last season. Henderson is something of an enigma as a footballer but every now and then he will produce flashes of technique to remind you of his real potential.

However, his greatest strengths plainly do not lie in the smoothness of his touch or the quality of his strike. The reason for his dip in form this season is simple – without Suarez and Sturridge in the team to stretch defences, he has far less space in which to operate and for a physical, high-energy player like Henderson, space is essential. David Silva he is not.

However, Henderson’s form (or lack of it) must be taken with a pinch of salt. Thanks to the loss of the SAS striking partnership Liverpool are a far less dangerous prospect this season, and this has empowered their opposition to seize the initiative and even dominate on occasion.

Playing on the back foot has exposed a fundamental flaw in deploying Gerrard at the base of midfield – last season he was the playmaker-in-chief, orchestrating wave after wave of attack and helping to lay siege to the opposition’s goal, but this season his failings in positioning and self-discipline have become painfully obvious.

Because of Gerrard’s struggles, Henderson has often been forced to quell his attacking instincts in an attempt to “carry” his captain. To exemplify this, in the last 20 games Henderson has started just 5 without Gerrard in the team and in those games he averaged an index rating of 6.97 (up 0.35 on his overall average of 6.62) and even more impressively ranked 1st amongst all Liverpool players according to WhoScored with an average rating of 7.50.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, November 4, 2014: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva during a training session at Melwood Training Grounds ahead of the UEFA Champions League Group B match against PFC Ludogorets Razgrad. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)s

Elsewhere in midfield, Lucas has improved massively and is now one of the first names on the teamsheet. Last season his role in the team was neutered by the form of Gerrard and Henderson and he only started 20 games in the Premier League.

However, with the attack-minded pair of Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic as the first-choice wing-backs and only three players at the back, Lucas’ break-up play has become an integral part of Liverpool’s game-plan. Remarkably, Liverpool have drawn 1 and lost 4 of their last 5 games in which Lucas didn’t start, and this statistic really speaks for itself.

Joe Allen’s form has been poor again this season – making one question the actual meaning of form in the first place. If form is how a player is performing relative to how that player can perform, then perhaps Allen hasn’t been in such bad form this season after all. Perhaps he just isn’t a particularly good player – perhaps he’s been in the form of his life, but nobody’s noticed.

His above-average ball control has never been able to hide weaknesses in other areas of his game and I think it’s about time Liverpool cut their losses and sold him. The tendency with Allen is to pine for him whenever he doesn’t play, only for him to make a disappointing return and remind you why you never rated him in the first place.

The prevailing perspective of Allen is as a sort of metaphysical concept, a divine embodiment of this glorious ideal of tiki-taka football. He passes the ball ten metres to the side and we marvel, having caught but a furtive glimpse of the fabled “Barca style of play”. But he is never going to be Xavi. Making a living as a professional footballer whose sole skill is short-range passing is nigh-on impossible, and yet that is all Allen has ever offered – he has no pace, he can’t shoot, he can’t head the ball and he’s too scared to take players on.

What conclusions do you think can be drawn from William’s findings? Let us know in the comments below.

Ranked and Rated: Liverpool’s Best and Worst Players Over Last 20 Games

A debut piece by William May takes an interesting look at the form of Liverpool players over the last 20 games – using player ratings and statistics to rank the best and worst performers.

Chelsea's shock defeat to Bradford could be bad news for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge tonight, according to Phil Babb.

That stunning FA Cup upset ended any notion of a domestic treble Jose Mourinho had already dismissed as "too difficult", but his side could book a date in the season's first major cup final this evening.

Chelsea go into the second leg of their League Cup semi-final level at 1-1 with Liverpool, who failed to turn their overall dominance at Anfield last week into a first-leg lead.

And former Liverpool defender Babb told Sky Sports News HQ's Morning View Mourinho will not stand for a second cup exit in the space of four days.

"It's always difficult to play Chelsea," he said. "But particularly after that result which shocked the football world.

"They're a wounded tiger - Jose will have those boys pumped up for tonight, and he will not expect anything other than a victory. He'll have the big-hitters back as well - he rested nine at the weekend, so it's going to be a formidable task for Liverpool, that's for sure."

Liverpool were less than convincing in their own FA Cup tie at the weekend as Championship Bolton held them to a goalless draw on Merseyside.

Babb said: "They just weren't firing on any cylinders. Maybe they had one eye on tonight's fixture, but you'd expect Liverpool - after the confidence they took from the Chelsea game - to come through that tie convincingly.

"But they couldn't score, and that worries me ahead of tonight's game."

Watch Chelsea v Liverpool live on Sky Sports 1 from 7pm tonight.

Liverpool U21s lost 2-1 to their biggest rivals in front of a crowd of 5,000 at Leigh Sport Village on Monday night.

ANFIELD, ENGLAND - Friday, August 22, 2014: Welsh players Liverpool's Jordan Williams and Manchester United's Tom Lawrence during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Both teams lined up with very attacking starting elevens. While the game was played at a high intensity, it lacked quality and excitement, especially in the second half after United regained the lead and took control of the game.

Team News

Liverpool went into the game with Jordon Ibe playing his first match since returning from a successful loan spell at Derby County. Michael Beale set up the team with three at the back. Ryan McLaughlin played on the right of midfield pushed up right behind Sergi Canos. Sheyi Ojo was left with much of the left flank to patrol both offensively and defensively.

United lined out with two first team squad players in Victor Valdes and Anderson, but also with Tyler Blackett, Paddy McNair and Jesse Lingard who have featured for United’s first team in the league this season. Nick Powell was also recently on loan at Leicester City.

First Half

There was very little between the sides early on. Jerome Sinclair struggled to have an impact early on as his touch let him down on a couple of occasions. Ibe tried to impose himself on the game but besides a few nice touches and dribbles he dipped in and out of the game without causing the United defence too many problems. Ojo had clearly been identified by the United team and he was well marshalled all night on what was a very narrow pitch for wide players.

SOFIA, BULGARIA - Wednesday, November 26, 2014: Liverpool's Oviemuno Ejaria Sheyi Ojo in action against PFC Ludogorets Razgrad during the UEFA Youth League Group B match at the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The United defence looked nervy with McNair, Blackett, and Vermijl making needless mistakes. Cameron Brannagan was starting to impose himself in midfield and fought to control the game against a good United midfield. Sinclair also started to cause the United defence problems with his pace and trickery.

The first real chance fell to Canos after a poor pass by Blackett, left him one and one with the former Barcelona keeper Valdes. Canos shot wide when he should have at the very least hit the target. I don’t think he realised he had so much time.

At the other end Powell had just a good a chance but also shot wide with the goal at his mercy. Powell atoned for his miss moments later when he steered home a fine header after an excellent free kick by Andreas Perreira. However the Liverpool defence was clearly not set up right. I have watched how our underage teams set up for set pieces and there is often a free man and no one attacks the ball.

United started to get to grips with the game after they scored with Perreira growing in influence and Powell always looked dangerous up front.

Drawing Level

Just before the break Liverpool equalised when a brilliantly weighted pass from Brannagan split the United defence. The ball fell perfectly for Sinclair who dispatched a perfectly placed effort into the near corner of Valdes net.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's Jerome Sinclair celebrates scoring the third goal against FC Basel during the UEFA Youth League Group B match at Langtree Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sinclair has had an excellent season for Liverpool at all levels this season. While others often get the limelight Sinclair has being a consistent performer most weeks and is an excellent finisher. He had an awful year with injury last season so it is good to see him back this season and he improves with each game. When he develops more physically and improves his hold up play, Liverpool will have an excellent forward that surely will get first team opportunities. He is the most technically gifted centre forward coming through in a long time.

Vital third goal

Liverpool would have being the happier going in at the break however it was United that came out more determined in the second half. Saidy Janko made a break for United into the left hand side of the Liverpool penalty area. Liverpool had five defenders against two United attackers until McNair arrived late into the box to score the winner past Vigouroux. Again it was poor defending by Liverpool, no one tracked McNair’s run and Liverpool also had too many defenders far too deep in their own box.

United continued to have chances after their goal. The Liverpool left side was continually being exposed. Ojo failed to track back on occasions and the formation was not helping him either. Liverpool failed to get back into the game and it’s a shame that they did not revert to a back four as McLaughlin offered very little offensively and was causing Canos to push in to an already congested middle.

Liverpool also lacked a creative player that could find a pass in the attacking third. Brannagan did try but he was often too deep. Perreira controlled the game for United who ran out comfortable winners.

The step up

Some of the younger Liverpool players struggled to impose themselves on the game. Canos, Chirvella and Ojo all had quiet games. It just shows how big the step up from U18 to U21 is. A derby match with United is unlike most U21 games as it is played with pace and intensity, something that most U18 and U21 games are not played at. It is more like a football league game. It is a shame there is not more of these games during the season as it helps the younger players work harder to get to the next level.

Man of the match

Nick Powell was dangerous throughout for United but Andreas Perreira controlled the game from midfield and was the best player on the pitch.

Liverpool’s best were Randall, Brannagan and Sinclair. I thought Brannagan showed his class through out and never gave up.
