Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss excited by prospect of Champions League

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool boss excited by prospect of Champions League

Liverpool begin their first UEFA Champions League campaign for five years on Tuesday night against Bulgarian side Ludogorets and manager Brendan Rodgers says he is relishing the challenge.

Rodgers believes his side can shrug off the disappointment of Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Aston Villa and make their mark once more among Europe's elite.

It is five years since the five-time champions competed in European football's top club competition and Rodgers knows how much the game matters to the supporters.

He said: "This is a group that has shown over the time that I've been here that we have to get over disappointment and move to the next game.

"We dominated the game against Villa but didn’t get the result we wanted but we have to move on. Our focus now goes straight to Tuesday night.

"It will be a wonderful occasion for us to be back in Champions League football and hopefully getting over the weekend result by getting a win in the first group game.

"I am very excited. Five years is a long time. We deserve the right to be in it. Last year, we had a great season. Success is about qualifying from the group. We will take it one game at a time. But the overall first objective is to perform well and get out of the group and qualify."

While many are tipping Liverpool to progress from a group that also includes Real Madrid and Basel, Rodgers is taking nothing for granted.

He said: "Like all games at this level, it will be a tough game. They are the top team in Bulgaria and we have had them watched and have done a lot of research on them. They play 4-2-3-1 and the full-backs look to get forward. They want to attack.

"They come here with confidence and will want to perform like they have been doing in Bulgaria. We now have to be really aggressive with our pressing and passing. We know they will be a tough opponent.

"It is only the last couple of days that it has brought home how long it has been away. This was my main priority to get the club at this level.

"This is one of the football greats around the world and this is the elite competition. This game can’t come quick enough for us. I have had supporters in my office, telling me about it. We do this for our supporters.

"The key is to build towards making this a sustainable club. The Champions League is the elite level."

Meanwhile, Dejan Lovren is also looking forward to making amends for the defeat by Villa.

He said: "We have shown to everyone that we can play and are not scared about defeats.

"Aston Villa was a little bit painful, we didn’t expect it, but it happens. We need to keep our head up and concentrate. We need to move on.

"We have the Champions League now and we have to forget about the weekend result. Of course we need to improve in every game but I am really confident in our team. We are practically a new team with a lot of new players. Everything will settle down.

"I think for everyone it is a pleasure to be back in after five years. We want success here. It will not be easy but I am sure that we can get out of the group."

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness is tipping Liverpool to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League on their return to the elite level.

The five-times European champions are competing in the Champions League for the first time in five seasons and their former midfielder and manager expects Brendan Rodgers' side to make a big impression.

Souness told Sky Sports News HQ: "The team selected on Saturday did not get a result against Aston Villa but Brendan could field the same team in the Champions League and they could go out and get a great result and no-one would question him.

"Liverpool, I think, will have a very good season this year and I can seeing them getting to the semi-finals of the European Cup if they finish second in their group behind Real Madrid and depending on who they get in the draw.

"I can speak from experience, there is nothing like Anfield on a European night. Momentum is a great thing to have in football especially at a club like Liverpool and the way the supporters get behind you on European nights.

"I think they can have a good season and if they start scoring goals they can have a good season in the Premier League. I don't think they will win it but finishing in the top four will be another great season for them."

Liverpool lost at home to Aston Villa at the weekend but Souness insists that Rodgers must be given time to work out his best first XI after a summer of heavy recruitment, having left Raheem Sterling on the bench.

"Villa had a game plan and stuck to it and they enjoyed a wee bit of luck," he said.

"Normally Liverpool start like a house on fire in the first 20 minutes but that did not happen on Saturday. The longer the game went on the more confident Villa got and they defended very well.

"No-one is qualified to say whether Rodgers picked the wrong team. He will need time to work out what is his best team and what are his best combinations in all areas of the pitch.

"He's lost Daniel Sturridge to injury on England duty and the last thing he wants is to lose another player like Sterling. He's the only one qualified to make the call whether Sterling starts.

"On another day he comes off the bench and scores the goal then you say 'what a great bit of management'. On this occasion it didn't happen, but that's football."

Brendan Rodgers addressed a room of press at Melwood on Monday afternoon to preview Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Ludogorets at Anfield (7.45pm kick-off).

On being back in the Champions League

“We’re very excited to be in the Champions League. Five years is a long time to be out of it for a club like Liverpool.

“Our overriding objective first of all is to qualify and come out of the group. We’ll take it one game at a time and aim for three points.

“Ludogorets will be a tough game for us, like al games at this level. They play an open, attacking style of football.

“They’re a team that attack and want to do well. They’re a top team. But it’s more about ourselves.”

On improving Liverpool’s performance

“We need to up the tempo of our game, press more and that will ignite the crowd at Anfield, who have been brilliant since I got here.

“We need to be better defensively. We were disappointed at the weekend. When you dominate but don’t score, you at least want a point.

“We need to give some time for the new players to play cohesively. Our emphasis will always be positive, but we need to tighten up.”

On how Mario Balotelli was treated by Aston Villa’s defenders

“There’s no complaints from me about Mario Balotelli’s treatment against Aston Villa. We ask players to work hard, but be fair.”

On team news for Tuesday night

“Martin Skrtel joined the group yesterday, he’s working hard but won’t be back from injury yet. He should be back for West Ham.”

On what being back in the Champions League means for the club

“The club has been away from the Champions League for too long. My main priority was to get the club back to this level.

“Liverpool are one of the footballing greats of world football and the Champions League is the elite competition.

“A few supporters have been in my office this last week and they’re really looking forward to traveling Europe again and the big games. That’s why we do all this — for the supporters.

“The key for us is building a top four sustainable club. Everyone wants to work at the elite level, and the Champions League is that.”

On the squad’s experience and youth

Steven Gerrard has a great record in this competition, and the young players are going to gain valuable experience playing in it.

“We’ve got no fear of the competition. We’ll impose our style, our way of working and playing. We’ve done that and continue to do so.

“Balotelli is working very hard, he was unfortunate to be ill last week. It was only matchday he declared himself fit to play.

“Balotelli is arguably one of the most experienced players we have at the highest level. He’s relishing the responsibility and works hard.”

On Ludogorets

“Ludogorets’ emphasis is on attacking football. But I only worry about ourselves. We’re used to starting games quickly.

“But it’s important that if we don’t get an early goal, we know how to avoid conceding, go forward, invent and penetrate.

“Ludogorets have done very well to qualify for the group stages and they’ll be excited about coming to the iconic stadium of Anfield.

“Ludogorets signed a goalkeeper last night, we’ve got our guys working on who could play against us. We’re prepared.”

On pride

“It’s an honour to lead such a great club in the Champions League.”

Martin Skrtel: Not quite ready for return to action

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed defender Martin Skrtel will not be risked in Liverpool's return to the Champions League against Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

Skrtel was injured against Manchester City late last month and has missed the Premier League games against Tottenham and Aston Villa.

He returned to training on Sunday but Rodgers says he will not be involved against the Bulgarian champions in the Reds' first game in Group B at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Slovakia international should be available for their next league clash, which comes against West Ham at Upton Park on Saturday.

"Martin has worked very hard. He joined the group yesterday, so he is working well," Rodgers said.

"It's probably too early for this game but after a good week's training he should be ready for West Ham.

"Apart from that, we're pretty much the same in terms of injuries."

Watch West Ham against Liverpool on Sky Sports 1 HD from 4:45pm on Saturday.

Adam Griffies (@whatahitsonlfc on Twitter) takes a look at Liverpool’s defeat to Aston Villa from a unique angle.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers looks dejected as his side lose 1-0 at home to Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

13 days. 13 days we had to wait. 13 days after swatting aside a decent Spurs side at White Hart Lane, the Reds were finally back in action.

I actually wasn’t that bothered about this international break, heading into it. Which is rare. I could see some benefits for us. It would give our injured players a chance to step up their recovery, while not missing any games.

Stevie, now retired from England duty, could kick back somewhere sunny too, topping up his tan and (perhaps more significantly) his energy. Heading into a break on the back of a win always helps as well.

It actually seemed quite necessary.

But no, it was as soul-crushing as usual. Probably even more so. Our chief tormentor, Roy Hodgson, did what he does best – ruins our lives.

He decided to test Daniel Sturridge’s resolve again, playing the Reds’ number 15 for the entirety of a friendly against Norway. A vital friendly. Dan came through it, but Roy wasn’t done yet. A hamstring injury in training. Up to three weeks out.

Then Hodgson came worryingly close to achieving the impossible: injuring Jordan Henderson. Audacious. Luckily Hendo was having none of it and he recovered in time for England’s game in Switzerland.

Then there was big Emre Can, who rolled his ankle playing for Germany Under-21s, and could now face six weeks out according to Brendan. Just as he was finding his feet.

Joe Allen also picked up a knock, after playing 90 minutes in Andorra on a pitch that resembled an allotment – a vacant, sad allotment.

Oh, and mad Mario murdered a Wolves player during a practice match at Melwood. Or something like that.

The international break – as deplorable as ever.

Anyway, the Reds were back playing football on Saturday, and everything was going to be great. Just as Hodgson was departing our minds though, Paul Lambert arrived at Anfield with his Aston Villa side.

Like Hodgson, Lambert seems to have decided his mission in football is to depress Liverpool fans. I’m sick of him prancing up and down the Anfield touchline after a goal for his team, saluting the traveling supporters. Piss off Paul. Brendan should be prancing.

From the moment Gabby Agbonlahor put Villa ahead early on in this one, it seemed obvious nothing was going to change. There was an inevitability about it. They get their noses in front and build a metaphorical brick wall. A brick wall that we run into time and time again.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor scores the winning goal against Liverpool during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

I take the blame for the goal, by the way. We’ve actually defended set-pieces reasonably well in recent times, contrary to popular narrative. And I attribute this to the fact I shout ‘Out!’ as the ball is flying into our box. It’s worked remarkably well. I didn’t do it this time; I wasn’t on my game. That’s why we conceded, and ultimately lost the game. That, and the fact Dejan Lovren has clearly spent far too much time hanging around (playing wrestling) with Martin Skrtel.

Our shambolic set-piece defending wasn’t the only thing that contributed to us coming out of this one empty handed though. In attack, we looked disjointed. This was perhaps no surprise, as of our offensive quadrant, only Philippe Coutinho had more than a single start for us.

Raheem Sterling got a rest, which I could see a smidgen of logic in given that we had a Champions League game a few days later. But, to take another angle, is he really needed against Ludogorets? Would it not have been better to play him against Villa and rest him on Tuesday?

This is all hindsight though, I know. I certainly wasn’t moaning about our side when I saw it. Besides, we’re not privy to the information Brendan and the rest of the coaching staff have. Perhaps Raheem wasn’t 100% after returning from England duty (likely) and thus leaving him on the bench here seemed the rational thing to do.

Of the new boys that started, I thought they each did quite well. Both full-backs were impressive again, tirelessly offering a wide attacking outlet and tracking back briskly when we lost possession.

Further forward, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Mario Balotelli all showed glimpses of quality, but none of the three are fully up to match sharpness. To be fair to them, I think our inability to break Villa down stemmed from our lack of cohesion as a team, and not the individuals themselves.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks dejected as Aston Villa score the only goal of the game during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There will of course be those ‘supporters’ who wearily harp on about Luis Suarez, and how much we miss him. They were out in full force on Saturday evening, I’m sure, groaning with unnecessary scorn and vigour into their beverages.

If you are one of those people, I implore you to wait and see. You may not have picked up on the positives from Saturday, but they were there I assure you. Anyway, Suarez wouldn’t have improved us at all yesterday. I guarantee you. I can guarantee you because he’d have been watching from the stands, suspended.

The Champions League is back at Anfield on Tuesday. Stop drowning in self-pity and take that in. The Champions League. Back at Anfield. On Tuesday.

On Tuesday.

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed how ex-Reds striker Fernando Torres played a major role in securing the signing of Raheem Sterling from Queens Park Rangers in 2010.

Sterling, just 15-years-old at the time, was headhunted by several top Premier League clubs, but it was Liverpool that suited the youngster and his family.

The Reds paid an initial fee of around £600,000 for Sterling — which could rise to as much as £5 million depending on how many appearances he makes for Liverpool’s first team.

Quoted by Neil Moxley in the Sunday People, Benitez recalls, “Our then academy boss Frank McParland came up to me one day and said, ‘I’ve seen this player – we’ve been following him for a while and I think he’s got something.’

“So we invited Raheem to Melwood and had a meeting with him and his mother.

“I walked around the complex with them and was showing them the facilities and we got as far as the physio’s room.

“Fernando was there – and I think Steven Gerrard, too. But definitely Fernando.I explained what Raheem and his mum were doing and I told Fernando what we thought of the young player we had brought in.

“He had a quick chat with him, asking how he was getting on. He was interested in him.

“Raheem was really pleased – and you could see his mum was, too – really impressed that the club’s biggest players had made a fuss of him.”

Sterling has gone on to make 81 appearances for Liverpool’s first team, scoring 14 goals in the process.

His emergence from squad player to first-team regular over the last year has been quite remarkable, with the 19-year-old playing an instrumental part in the Reds’ title chase last season.

Now Sterling embarks on a new chapter in his career as Liverpool prepare for their first Champions League game in almost five years on Tuesday night.

Lee Coates calls for patience and belief in Brendan Rodgers‘ new-look Liverpool after a second defeat of the season to Aston Villa on Saturday.

Only Chelsea had made us play this way since we last faced Aston Villa at Anfield eight months ago. Bereft of penetration, creativity, cohesion and fluidity. In both of those games we tinkered with a variation of the 4-3-3 formation. One up top. One man up top. That one man has got a lot to do. He has to be special.

Formations

Last season we made a decision. We made a decision to put everything we had on our special player, Luis Suarez. One game at a time. Just win one game at a time. To do this we had to play to his strengths. Give him whatever he needed. Give him Sterling to play behind. Give him Sturridge to work alongside. Give him whatever he needs to give us three points.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 13, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the first goal against Manchester City with team-mate Luis Suarez during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

That’s all fine. We won a lot of games – in the short term. In the long term, we risked a lot. It must have been known that Suarez could leave. There was always the possibility. We went for broke while we had him. We lived for the present with no regard for the future. We just wanted to win games immediately. What would happen to a system that is built around Suarez if he no longer becomes a part of it? It falls down. It simply cannot function.

We gave ourselves no time to prepare for a football team without Suarez. A football team that needs to play in a variety of ways to compete at all levels of the game.

We knew the diamond formation brought us goals. We knew it unleashed Sterling, Suarez and Sturridge in one torrent of footballing attack. Now we need to expand. We need to excel in all formations. Players need to take on more roles. They need to be flexible. They need to each own a key ring and know which one to use.

The players we have are capable, despite only evidencing a glimpse. We know they are capable because they have to be. We can’t think otherwise.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli isn’t the same player as Luis Suarez. The differences between them are endless and it’s vulgar to submit them to comparisons, however they do share one common trait. A switch. They each have a switch. Rodgers found Suarez’s.

He flicked it and focussed all that was Luis Suarez into a lethal striker. Balotelli will need more work and he’ll be a different type of striker to what Suarez was. At the moment he’s faltering and not sure of his function but if Rodgers finds his switch, Balotelli will be a big player for this football team.

New Players

We bought enough players to float around in a number of different 4-3-3 variants. The positions are sorted. The players are not. They’re new and strange. They’re a bunch of mates who’s been asked to put on a show.

They can piss about in rehearsal but when it comes to it, there’s no completion. No conclusion to the sum of their parts.

Rodgers has solved this problem for us before. We had been submitted to these lacklustre games on a regular basis in the early days of his Liverpool management. The only difference now is that the groundwork is his own.

It won’t take as much work. The players are his players. He’s not working with opposing forces or ingredients that don’t belong any more. He knows where he’s going. He’s just not there yet.
