Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge believes talented team-mates will make it easier for him to continue to score goals as he makes his return from injury.

The 25-year-old ended five months of injury frustration with the second in the 2-0 win over West Ham, finding the net with a clinical finish just 12 minutes after coming on as substitute.

Playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who laid on the first for Raheem Sterling, returned the ball to the England striker after he had cut in from the right and despite a 153-day absence with thigh and calf problems he produced a brilliant first touch and a devastating second to suggest his predatory instincts have not diminished while he has been away.

It was his 37th goal in 53 appearances since joining the club two years ago – a period in which he has had his fair share of injuries. Critics may have suggested many of his 24 goals last season came courtesy of the even more prolific Luis Suarez but now that partnership with the Uruguay international is no more Sturridge hopes he can link up just as effectively with other players.

“It was a great feeling to help my team-mates get three points,” he said. “That’s the most important thing – to just be out there and helping the team win games.

“It was great play by Coutinho. We have a great relationship in terms of he knows my runs and I know the types of passes he likes to play as well. He makes my job easier.

“Once I saw him cut inside I knew the ball would come and it was just a case of getting it under control and hitting the target.”

In Sturridge’s absence Sterling has been pressed into the role of central striker, mainly to utilise his blistering pace, and a return of five goals in his last 10 games suggests he has not done too bad a job.

He will now drop into a slightly withdrawn position to accommodate Sturridge but is still expected to continue contributing goals.

“He’s done extremely well. He’s working hard and I’m proud of him as his ‘older brother’ to look at him and see how well he’s done,” Sturridge told LFCTV. “I just hope he continues to work hard and play in the way he has because he’s improving every single day.

“He takes it in his stride – he doesn’t get too big-headed, he doesn’t get overly confident with anything. “I take him under my arm when he goes through difficult times as well, but I give him all the credit in the world and I’m really proud of him.”

Sterling’s cool finish, sliding the ball past Adrian from Coutinho’s inventive pass, suggested he is developing into a better goalscorer but it was not until Sturridge arrived that Liverpool possessed the threat up front which has been lacking for most of the season.

West Ham have not won at Anfield since 1963 but, heading into the game above their hosts, they would have fancied their chances. For that to happen though they needed their big players, ex-Reds Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing and striker Enner Valencia, to be on top form.

The former landed flailing forearms on Emre Can and Lazar Markovic in the first half and a high foot on Can which resulted in a booking and an injury which forced Carroll off soon after. Downing was overwhelmed in midfield while Valencia got no joy out of Martin Skrtel.

Liverpool are unbeaten in seven league matches and have won three in a row for the first time since April.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists expectations still need to be handled carefully regarding Daniel Sturridge but he was delighted that the fit-again striker is back and scoring.

The England international ended a five-month injury absence by coming off the bench to score the Reds’ second in a 2-0 win against West Ham after Raheem Sterling had opened the scoring early in the second half.

Sturridge’s return has been long-awaited with the side struggling for a cutting edge and while Rodgers is keen for the 25-year-old to be held up as a solution to all their problems he admits it is a relief to see him scoring again.

“It was nice for him. He has been out for a long time and worked very hard,” he said. “When he is in that area of the pitch he has shown he is lethal and it was a great first touch and then he has great power off both sides and it was a wonderful finish. I am delighted for him.

“He has come back into the fold but it is just managing that integration into the team but I know he is excited about coming back.

“But it was better him scoring than not scoring because if he doesn’t everyone is looking at him wondering when he will get his first goal.”

Rodgers rested captain Steven Gerrard as a precaution after he reported a tight hamstring after 120 minutes against Chelsea in their midweek Capital One Cup semi-final defeat but said the midfielder would be available for the FA Cup replay at Bolton on Wednesday.

The team coped comfortably in his absence, even withstanding a physical barrage from Hammers striker Andy Carroll which saw Emre Can and Lazar Markovic caught in the face by forearms.

“The first one looked like the centre-forward was jumping up and he has got ahead of Emre. That is Andy’s game, physicality is a big part, but I thought out players were great in how they dealt with it,” added the Reds boss.

“The team stood up to the aerial duels very well, pressed the game well and they got their rewards for that.”

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce says he is facing a defensive crisis after losing two players during the defeat at Liverpool.

James Collins struggled through a hamstring problem but eventually had to come off, while Winston Reid limped off in the latter stages as the Hammers lost 2-0 at Anfield.

With James Tomkins already injured, Allardyce is struggling for choice in defence and, with a key Premier League clash against Manchester United to come next week, the Hammers boss is praying that Collins and Reid won’t be out for two long.

“It’s more than an issue, it’s a crisis for us now,” he said. “Him and Reidy going down has left us a massive hole and I’m not sure how long they’re going to be.

“We’ve got to try and face the crisis as best we can. It will be difficult, but it’s all hands on pumps for the medical staff to get the lads back as quick as we can, particularly with next week just as important for us, and the week after when the FA Cup arrives.”

Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge scored as Liverpool took the points on Saturday afternoon as West Ham’s bright start faded away into defeat.

While admitting his side didn’t play their best on Merseyside, Allardyce couldn’t help but wonder if it would have been different if he had fewer injuries.

“I think in the end, due to our injury problems, it’s cost us anything we might have got here today,” he added.

“I don’t think Liverpool were outstanding at all – certainly in the first half we could see that. What we didn’t do was play as well as we could.

Stretched

“But [Collins] came off at half time saying he’s got a hamstring [injury], and of course he wanted to try and play on and that caused us problems, because when you’ve got a bit of an injury marking Sterling is not easy, so our game got stretched and in the end we had to try and change him.

“By that time we’re 1-0 down and Reidy comes off as well. Andy Carroll hurt himself, so that’s three on top of the seven we had [injured] before we played and that’s too much for us to cope with today when you’re playing somewhere like Anfield.

“It’s a great shame for us today. As hard as we tried the forces went against us in terms of injuries particularly. On another day with players staying fit, other players getting on the pitch who we missed today’s game, I think we’d have made a better game of it.”

Despite having a threadbare defence, the Hammers boss thinks it is very unlikely the club will look to bring in cover at centre-back ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Allardyce added: “Probably not. Not in the central defensive area because you end up pulling somebody from abroad who probably hasn’t played for his club, and because he hasn’t played for his club would not be up to speed coming in and playing at this level.”

Premier League: Sam Allardyce facing 'defensive crisis' at West Ham after Liverpool defeat

Liverpool brushed aside West Ham 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday, and we assess each Reds player on a victorious afternoon for Brendan Rodgers‘ men.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 31, 2015: Liverpool's celebrates scoring the first goal against West Ham United during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

SIMON MIGNOLET (out of 10)- 6.5

The Belgian had a largely untroubled afternoon, but whenever he was called upon he was solid. There are signs that his form is improving, which he deserves great credit for after a tough time of things.

Collected crosses and corners comfortably on more than one occasion. Another cleansheet, huge for his confidence.

EMRE CAN- 7

The imposing youngster continues to look a class act at the back for Liverpool, and his use of the ball and reading of the game was impressive all afternoon. He also dealt well with the physicality of former Red Andy Carroll.

Moved to centre of the three in the second half and looked assured.

MARTIN SKRTEL- 7

The 30-year-old continued his good run of form. He handled the pace of Enner Valencia well on the whole, and generally looks far more steady in a back three.

MAMADOU SAKHO- 8

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v West Ham United FC

Sakho was colossal from start to finish, and continues to show what a brilliant centre-back he is. He was excellent in all aspects of his defending, and is a hugely important player for Liverpool now.

Credit to for him playing through the pain barrier with his back injury. Played out of the back and was praised by Brendan Rodgers post-match.

LAZAR MARKOVIC- 6

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a terrific time of things in his wing-back role, but he was far from his best against the Hammers. His influence was minimal, and he missed a glorious chance to make it 1-0 just before half-time.

LUCAS LEIVA- 7

The Brazilian was not as noticeable and influential as he has been in recent weeks, but he was still quietly effective. He used the ball intelligently, and provided good defensive cover in front of the defence.

JORDAN HENDERSON- 7

Like Lucas, Henderson wasn’t at his best, but he didn’t need to be. His passing was effective and his energy levels were as impressive as ever. Needs to improve his set pieces though.

ALBERTO MORENO- 7

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 31, 2015: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno in action against West Ham United's Alex Song during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The young Spaniard was a constant outlet on the left, making endless runs down the flank to support the attack. Defensively he was largely troubled, but was solid in that area nonetheless.

ADAM LALLANA- 6

After a disappointing showing on his last Anfield outing against Bolton, Lallana was once again on the periphery of things. He is still far from his best though, and will come good.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 8.5

The 22-year-old produced yet another virtuoso display, outlining why he is such a vital player for Liverpool now. He created both goals, and his assist for Raheem Sterling‘s effort was a joy to watch. Man of the Match.

RAHEEM STERLING- 7.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 31, 2015: Liverpool's celebrates scoring the first goal against West Ham United during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sterling was a pest to West Ham all afternoon, and his link-up play with Coutinho was mesmerising at times. He took his goal expertly, and looked a class act from start to finish. Eight goals for the season for the 20-year-old now.

Substitutes

DANIEL STURRIDGE (on for Markovic 68)- 7

The 25-year-old has missed five months of action, but scored within 12 minutes of coming on. His return is enormous for the Reds; we finally have a finisher in the team again. Gave Liverpool a completely new edge in the final third, which is long overdue and hugely welcomed.

JORDON IBE (on for Coutinho 81)- n/a

Produced one good shot to test Adrian, but wasn’t on the pitch long enough to assess properly. Good to see him back and adding another option in attack.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes his side have been missing Daniel Sturridge’s pace and finishing after the striker scored on his return.

The England forward netted for the Reds 10 minutes after coming off the bench for his first appearance in five months, as Liverpool beat West Ham 2-0 to move up to seventh in the Premier League.

Philippe Coutinho set up Sturridge’s strike with an excellent run and pass, something Rodgers said his returning striker would be immensely grateful for.

“[A pass like that is] what you want when you’ve been out for so long,” he said.

“He just moved naturally into position, and we’ve missed that – that pace and that finishing. You’ve seen him there with 25 minutes and he could have had a couple of goals.

“His first touch was brilliant and that’s what he can do. A great finish and it was nice for him to come back and get a goal.”

Raheem Sterling opened the scoring at Anfield after Liverpool dominated for the majority of the match.

It took until the second half for them to break the deadlock, and Rodgers believes it was vital they remained patient and didn’t become frustrated or tired after a gruelling Capital One Cup encounter with Chelsea in midweek.

Patience

“That was a very good performance today against a team that is a very difficult team to beat. They’ve had a wonderful season, West Ham, up until now, but I thought the players were brilliant today on the back of 120 minutes during the week," Rodgers added.

“With West Ham coming into the game fresh we knew they would want to make a quick start and I thought they started well, and we had to ensure that we competed and battled.

“As the first half wore on we started to find the spaces, and the second half I thought we had real good control of the game.

“Against a team that’s very well-organised and got good players you have to show that patience, but against West Ham you’ve [also] got to compete.

“I thought the two centre-halves, Sakho and Skrtel were outstanding along with the goalkeeper – anything he had to deal with he dealt with really well. They had to deal with the direct ball up to Andy Carroll, but once they dealt with that we earned the right to play.

“All round it was very good. We spoke at half time about the combinations in and around the edge of the box. It was a brilliant first goal – great technique from all three players involved in the move. Coutinho has two assists today with two great passes.”

With transfer deadline day fast approaching the Reds boss was also quizzed on any potential business, but he said: “No, I don’t think there will be anything done.”

Merenung ke luar jendela

Bayu pagi meniup lembut

Lihat bintang di angkasa

Purnama menerangi gelapku

Dan bila fajar menjelma

Itu permulaan hari baru

Dunia gamat bunyinya

Sunyiku hanya Tuhan tahu

Dalam perjalanan banyak persimpangan

Di mana kita bertukar arah

Kau lurus ke kiri aku tegak ke kanan

Di mana kita tersilap langkah

Kadang-kala waktu berhenti

Ku toleh ke sisi

Engkau tiada di sampingku

Tapi lebih seringkali

Bertemu dalam mimpi

Semuka dengan sahabatku

Aku tanya apa khabar

Aku tanya apa khabar

Aku tanya apa khabar

Aku tanya apa khabar semua

Liverpool won 2-0 against West Ham at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, and we look at how those associated with the Reds reacted on social media both during and after the game.

Much of the pre-match hype was about the return of Daniel Sturridge, having missed five months of action because of injury.

It was the 25-year-old who made the headlines, ultimately, scoring clinically just 12 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute.

In truth, there have been more memorable afternoons at Anfield, and the freezing cold conditions certainly didn’t help the crowd or the players, but it was solid victory against a West Ham side with Champions League aspirations of their own.

Raheem Sterling‘s expertly taken effort gave Liverpool the lead five minutes after half-time, after a wondrous Philippe Coutinho pass, and Sturridge put the game to bed midway through the second-half. It’s now seven Premier League games unbeaten for Brendan Rodgers and his side.

Here is how social media reacted to the victory, and Sturridge’s triumphant return.

‘hoosierred’ on the forum:

Sturridge showed exactly what this team has be missing all season. And why none of the other three strikers are starting even though no one else on the team can shoot.

Solid performance all around. Controlled the midfield, created chance after chance and finally finished a couple. Outside of swinging elbows West Ham created very little trouble for our defense.

‘Hope in your heart’ on the forum:

Pretty much a walk in the park, at least during the second half. Excellent element of control in midfield, great chances created (Coutinho… what a player!) and obviously, a genuine striker coming back into the team makes all the difference in the fluidity of our game in front of goal.

Let us know your thoughts on the game in the comments section below.

Sturridge scored on his return to Liverpool action

Sturridge scored on his return to Liverpool action

Daniel Sturridge scored on his return as Liverpool registered a 2-0 win over West Ham to leapfrog their opponents in the table.

Raheem Sterling fired low past Hammers goalkeeper Adrian to put the hosts in front shortly after the break, before Sturridge’s powerful finish doubled the lead 10 minutes into his return from the bench.

Coutinho was earlier denied by Adrian while Lazar Markovic fired a golden opportunity wide, moments after the hosts felt they should have had a penalty for a foul on Raheem Sterling by Joey O’Brien.

But it wouldn’t matter as the two England internationals netted in the second half, and Brendan Rodgers’ men move above the Hammers into seventh in the Premier League.

It was an open affair right from the off, with Andy Carroll causing plenty of problems in the air. The striker caught Emre Can with a flailing arm early on and that seemed to rattle the Liverpool man for the rest of the half.

The hosts had the first real chance, though, as the lively Sterling cut in from the flank and laid off for Adam Lallana. The midfielder was quickly closed down but it fell for Markovic, who had one shot blocked before firing wide.

Sterling and Philippe Coutinho were the main source of the hosts’ threat, and they nearly set up an opening goal as they played a superb one-two as the former backheeled it beyond the defence, but the Brazilian’s tame effort was easily saved at the near post by Adrian.

The hosts then felt they should have had a penalty right on half time, as Sterling spun round Joey O’Brien only to go down under the defender’s challenge. Nothing was given, but Liverpool almost took the lead immediately as Markovic cut out Stewart Downing’s loose pass, only to fire wide of the target with the goal at his mercy.

Cool finish

The hosts finally broke the deadlock shortly after half time, though, as Alberto Moreno’s ball in was chested down by Sterling. The ball deflected off Reid into the path of Coutinho, who chipped a lovely ball beyond the defence, and Sterling slotted it calmly under Adrian with a cool first-time finish.

The visitors hardly created anything, but Enner Valencia spurned a chance as he drilled a low shot straight at Mignolet from 18 yards, before Coutinho showed some lovely footwork at the other end, working some space on the edge of the box and firing low at Adrian.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon came with just over 20 minutes remaining, as Sturridge was finally re-introduced to first-team action after five months out as he replaced Markovic.

It only took 10 minutes for Sturridge to score on his return. Coutinho raced into the West Ham half and played a lovely ball into the striker, who touch a superb touch before drilling a low shot in at the near post to cap an excellent afternoon for Liverpool.

Player Ratings

Liverpool earned a solid 2-0 victory over West Ham at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, with Daniel Sturridge scoring on his first game back from injury. Raheem Sterling scored the opener.

Liverpool 2-0 West Ham

Premier League – Anfield – Saturday, 31st January 2015

Goals: Sterling (50), Sturridge (80)

Pre Match

Brendan Rodgers made just one change from the side that lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday evening, with Adam Lallana replacing Steven Gerrard. It is likely the skipper will start in the FA Cup replay against Bolton on Tuesday instead.

The big news, however, was the return to the squad of star man Sturridge after appearing just three times this season. He started on the bench, but was to have a key contribution on the day.

First-half

Lallana and Lazar Markovic both almost struck early on in front of a freezing cold Kop, but it was a relatively low-key opening to proceedings. West Ham looked more confident than Hammers sides of the past that have visited Anfield.

Jordan Henderson fired straight at Adrian after 18 minutes, and the West Ham goalkeeper then denied Philippe Coutinho soon after, following a superb one-two with Sterling.

Sam Allardyce’s men threatened aerially a few times, and ex-Red Andy Carroll was in typically robust form, clashing with both Emre Can and Markovic. The latter missed a glorious chance seconds before the interval, shooting wide with the goal at his mercy.

It had been a fairly forgettable first-half, in truth, and at half-time it was deadlocked at 0-0.

Second-half

There were no changes at the break, as the Reds tried to score their first goal in almost 300 minutes of football.

In the 50th minute that drought was broken, and Liverpool were ahead. Sterling scored his eighth goal of the season, slotting coolly past Adrian after a brilliant pass by Coutinho.

It was a big goal for the hosts, and once again highlighted both the Englishman and Brazilian’s importance to Liverpool.

The in-form Coutinho tested Adrian just after the hour mark, and Jordan Henderson drove wide minutes later. Midway through the second-half, Sturridge was introduced to a huge ovation.

The 25-year-old couldn’t quite connect with a header after 78 minutes, in what was his first chance of note, and a hushed Anfield embraced themselves for a tense finale.

Sturridge put the game to bed in front of the overjoyed home faithful just two minutes later, however, finishing clinically at the near post with his right foot. It was a wonderful moment for the England striker.

Substitute Jordan Ibe forced Adrian into a save, and Sturridge couldn’t convert the rebound, as Liverpool bossed the remainder of proceedings.

The final whistle blew, confirming another win for Rodgers’ men as their impressive run of form continues. Sturridge’s return and goal capped of a fine afternoon’s work, and a top-four Premier League finish remains a genuine aim.

Liverpool 2-0 West Ham: Sturridge scores on return as Reds beat Hammers
