Defender Alvaro Arbeloa watched from the bench as Real Madrid were crowned European champions for a 10th time in May but admits his toughest moment in the competition came as a Liverpool player.

MADRID, SPAIN - Sunday, March 28, 2010: Real Madrid Club de Futbol's Alvaro Arbeloa celebrates scoring a goal against Club Atletico de Madrid during the La Liga Primera Division Madrid Derby match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. (Pic by Hoch Zwei/Sprimont Press/Propaganda)

The full-back returns to Anfield this week five years after he left to return to his native Spain and admits the place has fond memories for him.

However, the crushing disappointment of losing the 2007 Champions League final to AC Milan, when he came on as a late substitute, remains his lowest point.

"Suffering injuries is hard but one of the most difficult moments for me was the defeat in the final in Athens with Liverpool," said the 31-year-old, who was allowed to move to the Bernabeu for just B£3.5million in 2009 despite becoming Real's first-choice right-back for a number of subsequent seasons.

"I've lost in the semi-finals four times but I always thought about the missed opportunity in Athens.

"Going back to Liverpool after five years will be very special. I spent two wonderful years there and I got used to a new culture.

"I grew a lot, both as a player and as a person. It will be great but not just for me: I have told my team-mates to enjoy the match at Anfield as much as possible.

"Champions League nights and big games like this one at Anfield are very special.

"We're going to be up against a team that will come out to fight to the last and will give everything, because they need to win too."

Barcelona, Spain - Wednesday, February 21, 2007: Liverpool's Alvaro Arbeloa and FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi during the UEFA Champions League First Knockout Round 1st Leg match at the Nou Camp. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Arbeloa's Liverpool debut came in the famous 2-1 Champions League win against Barcelona in the Nou Camp in 2007, when he was played out of position at left-back to negate Lionel Messi.

"It was my first game in the starting line-up and my debut in the Champions League," he told uefa.com.

"What more can you ask, having come up through the ranks of the Real Madrid youth system, than to make your debut at the Camp Nou and win there?

"It was a magic, special night, playing for a great club and wearing the shirt of the European champions. We played a fantastic match."

Real go into Wednesday's game top of Group B, after winning their first two matches, with the pressure on their hosts after a disappointing defeat in Basel last time out.

Real are likely to be without Gareth Bale because of a buttock muscle injury.

A statement on the club's website read: "After tests carried out on Gareth Bale by the Real Madrid Sanitas medical services he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the right pyramidalis muscle. His progress will be monitored."

However, his absence will not lesson Real's attacking potency with the free-scoring Cristiano Ronaldo set to take centre stage.

"There's no doubt that Cristiano is the best player in the world at the moment," said Arbeloa.

"He is a great professional and a player who improves every day. No-one can imagine what he does.

"Training and playing with him helps you to grow and improve. For us, it's a privilege to have Cristiano with us."

Ini adalah perlawanan besar dan juga ujian besar bagi kami. Tapi kita akan memberi cabaran dan bermain tanpa ada rasa takut,&039;&039;

Liverpool's Italian striker Mario Balotelli misses an open goal

Liverpool's Italian striker Mario Balotelli misses an open goal

Liverpool striker Brendan Rodgers has defended £16m striker Mario Balotelli, saying: "He would have scored if Steven Caulker had not put it in."

Balotelli has now had 30 shots in the Premier League without scoring - including an astonishing miss in the 3-2 win over QPR - but Rodgers is keen to defend his big summer signing.

"It will drop for the boy. The most important thing for me is his work rate," he said.

"The guy is doing his best and working really hard and it is not dropping for him.

"I would say he would have finished that if Caulker had not put it in.

"He is seen as the direct replacement for Luis Suarez. And as I said before, Luis is irreplaceable. A real world class talent and that is not what is being asked of Mario."

His view is not being shared by former Liverpool player Jimmy Case, who said: "To be bitterly honest Mario Balotelli is a waste of space at the minute. He is just not a team player."

Bangkit Lah LFC...

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admitted that his team were far from their best in their dramatic 3-2 win over QPR on Sunday afternoon, but praised his players’ character to twice score in stoppage time.

Rodgers reserved praise for teenager Raheem Sterling, who was instrumental in both late goals and was the Reds’ best performer against his old club. The Liverpool boss noted Sterling’s speed of thought for the opening goal too, saying how the best players come alive at moments like that – Sterling played a quick ball to release Glen Johnson, whose cross was put into his own net by Richard Dunne.

Rodgers was his charismatic self when asked if he’d spoken to England manager Roy Hodgson – who left Loftus Road 10 minutes before full-time – Rodgers joking “I’ve been quite busy”. Asked if Sterling had spoken to Hodgson, Rodgers said not unless he’d gone to speak to him in the shower!

The Reds are up to fifth, joint with West Ham in fourth place.

Brendan Rodgers hailed Raheem Sterling‘s “courage and cleverness” in providing the perfect riposte to “unfortunate” criticism of his England omission as Liverpool tiptoed to a 3-2 victory at QPR.

Sterling shook off controversy over claims he complained of tiredness in the build-up to England’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Estonia to mastermind Liverpool’s patchy Loftus Road win. Liverpool boss Rodgers said he has “no issue” with Roy Hodgson, pledging full support for England in spite of club frustrations over the Sterling revelations.

Sterling forced Steven Caulker to turn the ball into his own net in the fourth minute of added time as the Reds gazumped luckless QPR to root Harry Redknapp’s men to the foot of the Premier League.

Richard Dunne’s own goal gifted Liverpool the lead against the run of play, Eduardo Vargas twice equalised in the game’s frenetic dying stages either side of Philippe Coutinho‘s strike, but Caulker’s error denied Rangers a deserved point.

“I thought his cleverness and brightness led to the first goal,” said Rodgers of Sterling. “The best players come alive when the game goes dead, whether it’s a throw-in or in the game.

“Some players look for a rest or try to get organised, but the bright players come alive.

“He spotted it, played it early: it was a great run from Glen Johnson to invite the quick ball, and obviously a great cross that the defender turned in.

“And the breakaways for the other two, they are just all about his speed, his technique, his courage to carry the ball, run with the ball.

“It was great courage and cleverness from him today.”

Liverpool harboured frustrations Hodgson revealed Sterling had complained of tiredness ahead of the Estonia clash, that England eventually won 1-0. Hodgson attended Sunday’s Loftus Road thriller, but left 10 minutes before the end – and the entire calamitous climax.

Rodgers said he did not know whether England using Sterling sparingly in the last fortnight boosted his performance at QPR. Rodgers said there was no need for him or Sterling to meet up with Hodgson on Sunday.

“I haven’t thought on that a lot to be honest, there has been a whole series of things said and written about an unfortunate incident,” said Rodgers. “But we have to move on from that.

“I was actually quite busy believe it or not today, so I haven’t had the chance (to speak to Hodgson).

“The kid’s played the game and now he’s having a shower – so I don’t think he’ll see him – not unless Roy’s having a shower!

“We always talk, there’s no fallout, there’s no nothing.

“I’m not a barrier for England, if anything I’m a big supporter of the home nations and every country. I like to think I develop players that will hopefully develop national teams.

“So there’s no issue, Roy and I speak and communicate well, we’ll always find time to speak. “He’s a good man: I will always be here to support and help them.”

Rangers boss Redknapp was left to lament his impressive side’s shocking luck – and launch a passionate defence of his Loftus Road tenure. The former Tottenham manager said he has no interest in speculation linking the likes of Tim Sherwood to replacing him at the west London club’s helm.

“I couldn’t give a monkey’s about speculation, if you think I’m bothered, really, about silly people keeping writing rubbish,” said Redknapp. “I don’t even buy newspapers.

“The only time I hear is if some idiot comes up to me and says ‘ooh, have you seen the paper today Harry?’ And I say ‘I don’t know, I don’t read it’.

“I’m not interested: they can write what they want. “You only do what you can do, your best, that’s what you can do in life.

“If it ain’t good enough, it’s up to other people to make their mind up. “I don’t go home and worry about speculation, I’m 68 nearly.

“What am I worried about? I’m not 35 with five kids trying to pay a mortgage.

“I do my best every day, I come in early, every morning I’m at the training ground early and I leave late at night.

“I love my job, and I do my best: I can’t do any more and there ain’t no one could do any better here at the moment than me, I don’t think. “I hear other names mentioned, but they couldn’t do any better than what I can do, that’s for sure.”

Steven Gerrard admitted Liverpool were lucky to come away from Loftus Road with all three points after an injury-time own goal from QPR centre-back Steven Caulker gave the Reds a 3-2 victory.

Eduardo Vargas’ two late goals had the hosts edging towards a deserved and creditable draw, only for Caulker to put through his own net in the fourth minute of added time.

Richard Dunne’s own goal put Rangers behind midway through the second half. Vargas equalised with normal time running out, notching his first goal in English football, only for Philippe Coutinho‘s deflected effort to restore the Reds’ lead.

Vargas put QPR back on level terms moments later, but Liverpool sneaked the final word and the points, with Caulker the luckless fall guy. Gerrard was not impressed by Liverpool’s performance and felt his side would have had no complaints had they left west London pointless.

“We’re still in shock to be honest. We’re very lucky today,” he told Sky Sports 1.

“We would have had no complaints if we came away with nothing, we would have no complaints if we came away with a point. I think we’re very lucky to come away with three points.

“Our performance needs to be better. I think the only credit we can give ourselves is that we never give up and keep going to the end.

“We got rewarded in the end for hanging in and staying in the game but all around it needs improving.”

Raheem Sterling, who started for Liverpool against his old club after the controversy over his England omission last Sunday, admitted he was pleased to be back playing football. The winger has been an almost permanent fixture on the back pages following England manager Roy Hodgson’s revelation that the player had complained of tiredness prior to the Euro 2016 qualifier away to Estonia.

He said: “It’s always good to play football and it’s no different this week. The manager put me out there and I’m just happy that we got the three points.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers echoed his captain’s belief that QPR, who remain bottom of the Barclays Premier League with just four points from eight league fixtures, deserved at least a point.

“They certainly didn’t deserve to lose,” he said. “I thought we were very, very lucky to get the win.

“We showed tremendous character and were a little bit better in the second half but QPR definitely deserved something from the game.”

QPR manager Harry Redknapp declared himself angry at the result but took plenty of heart from his side’s performance.

“We didn’t deserve that, we were fantastic today, absolutely excellent,” the former Tottenham boss said.

“You hope you can replicate that (in future games) and get the points that the performance deserves but I can’t help but be angry.

“I’m delighted with the performance, I’m proud of the players, they were just fantastic, but they didn’t deserve to come away with nothing.

“It was totally unfair but that’s football and sometimes that’s life but I’m proud of every one of those boys today, they all gave everything.

“Seven or eight of them started last year in the Championship for us and they’ve showed today that they can play against one of the best teams in Europe in my opinion, and outplay them really, so there’s got to be lots of positives as well.”
