Newcastle: Stopped Liverpool from scoring at St James'

We look at the weekend's stats, including the end of a long Liverpool scoring run and details of Manchester United's worst start since 1986

We look at the statistics from a Premier League weekend which saw Chelsea, Southampton and Manchester City maintain their status as the leading trio, with Arsenal climbing to fourth on the back of their 3-0 win over Burnley.

Liverpool were beaten again, this time by resurgent Newcastle, while Tottenham came from behind to win at Aston Villa before Monday Night Football saw Sunderland end their away-day misery with a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United 1 Liverpool 0

Premier League matches between Newcastle United and Liverpool have produced more goals than any other PL fixture (130). Indeed, there has never been a goalless draw in this fixture in Premier League.

Newcastle United have won three and lost just one of the last five home games against the Reds in the Premier League.

After failing to score in his first nine appearances (all comps) for Newcastle, Ayoze Perez has netted two in his last two.

Liverpool have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 Premier League games.

Newcastle (35.6%) registered their lowest possession figure in a Premier League home match since they hosted Manchester City in October 2008 (28.6%).

Liverpool have failed to score on the road for the first time since November 2013 (v Arsenal), ending a run of 18 consecutive PL games in which they netted.

Mario Balotelli has now gone 689 minutes since his last goal in the Premier League.

Newcastle have won three consecutive PL games for the first time since November 2013, when they won four in a row.

Arsenal 3 Burnley 0

Arsenal have won their last four home matches in all competitions against the Clarets.

Arsene Wenger's side are unbeaten in their last 23 home Premier League matches, winning 15 and drawing eight.

Calum Chambers scored his first PL goal and provided his first PL assist.

Five of Arsenal's last seven Premier League goals have been scored by Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez has scored 10 goals in all competitions for Arsenal in 2014-15, five more than any other player.

Burnley are the 10th side to fail to win any of their opening 10 Premier League matches of a single season - six of the previous nine sides were relegated.

Burnley have conceded 15 goals in their last five games in the Premier League - this after previously keeping three clean sheets in a row.

Chelsea 2 Queens Park Rangers 1

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League games, winning 10 and drawing three.

Harry Redknapp has seen his teams lose all six league clashes with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Oscar has scored three and assisted two in his last six PL games for Chelsea.

Cesc Fabregas has been involved in 10 goals (one goal, nine assists) in 10 league games for Chelsea.

Fabregas now has as many assists this season as Mesut Ozil managed in the whole of last season.

QPR have conceded in 12 of their last 13 Premier League away games.

Charlie Austin has scored 24 league goals for QPR since the start of last season (including play-offs), 18 more than anyone else.

Six of the Hoops' last seven goals have come in the second half.

Eden Hazard has converted all eight penalties that he has taken in the Premier League.

Everton 0 Swansea City 0

This was Everton's first goalless draw in their last 37 Premier League games.

It was also the first time the Toffees have failed to find the back of the net in their last 12 top-flight games.

Garry Monk's side have now won just one of their last seven Premier League games, drawing three and losing three.

Swansea's possession figure of 33.16% in this game is their lowest ever figure in a Premier League game.

Swansea have been on the wrong end of a league-high three red cards this season.

The Swans mustered a total of 12 shots in the game (including blocked) but none of them were on target.

Hull City v Southampton

Victor Wanyama has netted three goals in his last six Premier League games for the Saints this season, having failed to score in the previous 26.

Ronald Koeman's side have conceded just five league goals this season; fewer than any other team in England's top four divisions.

The Saints have now kept three clean sheets in a row.

Southampton have won their last five league games against Hull and lost just one of the last 17 in all competitions (W11 D5 L1), including a meeting in the Full Members Cup in 1986-87.

The Tigers have won just one of their last nine Premier League games, losing three and drawing five.

Hull's only two home clashes with Southampton in the Premier League have both ended in 1-0 defeats.

Leicester City 0 West Bromwich Albion 1

Esteban Cambiasso netted his first own goal in a combined total of 362 games in Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League.

The Foxes have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League games.

Stewart Downing recorded an assist and a goal in the same game for the seventh time in his Premier League career and the first time with West Ham.

Downing already has twice as many goals (2) and twice as many assists (4) this season as he managed in 32 games for West Ham last season.

West Ham recovered from a 2+ goal deficit for the first time since coming from three down to draw 3-3 with West Brom in February 2011.

West Ham have now scored in nine successive Premier League games, their best run in the competition since Nov 2009 (10 games).

Carlton Cole made his 200th Premier League appearance for West Ham in this match. Only two players Steve Potts (204) and Mark Noble (202) have featured more.

West Ham have now scored eight headed goals this season, more than any other side in the Premier League. They've also had the most headed efforts (37).

Chris Smalling was sent off for the first time in the Premier League, becoming the 26th different United player to be sent off in the competition.

Smalling's red card was the earliest in Premier League Manchester derby history.

Only against Liverpool (9) have United had more players sent off than they have v City (6) in the Premier League.

Manchester United's first shot on target came in the 70th minute (Van Persie). City had had six by that point.

Harry Kane has scored nine goals in 13 appearances in all competitions this term, though Sunday's winner was his first league goal of the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers: Has plenty to ponder

Brendan Rodgers: Has plenty to ponder

Liverpool's defensive errors continue to cost them - but replacing Luis Suarez remains Brendan Rodgers' greatest dilemma, says Jamie Carragher.

The Reds were hardly water-tight as they finished second in the Premier League last season but individual slip-ups have continued to plague them this term, with Alberto Moreno the latest culprit.

The Spaniard was unable to clear the ball in his own box against Newcastle on Saturday, allowing Ayoze Perez to fire in the winner and leave Liverpool seventh, 12 points adrift of table-topping Chelsea.

However, Carragher pointed to Liverpool's blunt attacking play - which has accounted for just 13 goals in 10 Premier League games this season - as their major cause for concern.

The Sky Sports pundit was reluctant to discuss Suarez's absence but conceded the now-Barcelona forward is proving difficult to replace.

"There's obviously a massive problem," said Carragher, referring to Liverpool's forward trio of Fabio Borini, Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert managing 0 goals and just 45 touches in the opposition box between them in 888 minutes of Premier League football this season.

"Sergio Aguero, on his own, has had 90 touches in the opposition box and that tells its own story.

"I'm trying to stop talking about Suarez. He's not there anymore, forget him, he's moved on and he's not coming back. You've got to look at what you've got now. And they have to get more from those attacking players. There's also got to be a lot more creativity in that midfield.

"But the longer it goes on it shows how important Suarez was - more important than we all thought at the time.

"At times last season Brendan Rodgers, in press conferences, came out and said 'we're not a one-man team, you're being disrespectful to some of the other players'. But week by week it's shown Liverpool were almost a one-man team at times last season. Those stats are damning really.

"Ok, they've had criticism defensively but this is probably as big a problem, if not more."

Mistakes

As for Liverpool's defensive problems, Carragher questioned whether the personnel in the backline were defensively-minded enough.

For the past three Premier League seasons, Liverpool rank second only to Tottenham in defensive errors leading to shots and goals, with Arsenal third.

Carragher accepted individual mistakes were difficult for Rodgers to account for on match day - but suggested the Liverpool boss' recruitment policy may be the root of the problem.

"Last season we talked about the defending, the goals they conceded and we've done the same this season as well," said Carragher.

"But let's look at that over the last three seasons, Brendan Rodgers' time at the club. Tottenham and Arsenal are there, but without us looking at the numbers you'd think those three teams would be up there - defenders who make mistakes.

"Is that down to a manager? Is that down to the players they buy? Can a manager do a lot if a player makes a mistake? That's a massive problem for Liverpool. If you've got defenders that are making mistakes, how do you rectify it? Do they think defensively-minded enough? Are they proper defenders? Or are they more interested in being on the front foot, attacking? That is Brendan Rodgers' philosophy."

[PENGURUSAN MANUSIA]

Pendapat dr insan yg hina dr saya mengenai LIVERPOOL.

Bukankah MATTEO??? Adakah Matteo lebih bagus dr MOURINHO? semua fans malah pemain sendiri mestilah inginkan kemenangan. Tetapi kadangkala *RAMUAN* masih tercari2.

Bagaimana pula dgn VAN GAAL? adakah van gaal dikira GAGAL? beliau kan proven manager? Macam mana pula dgn Rafa yg pernah membawa LIVERPOOL menjulang piala? Kenapa masih terkial2 di NAPOLI? Klopp yg tercicir jauh dalam persada liga? Anceloti yg tidak mampu menjulang liga season lepas walaupun skuadnya dibarisi player yg WORLD CLASS? DEL BOSQUE menang pada uero2008 , world cup2010, euro2012 dan terkandas awal dalam group WC2014? Mereka semua PROVEN MANAGER AKA WORLD CLASS MANAGER bukan???

Kesimpulannya : PENGURUSAN MANUSIA bukan sesuatu yg mudah. Masa menjadi penentu segala. Diharapkan BR menemui ramuan secepat mungkin utk blend ke dalam pasukan bersesuaian dgn &039;kelengkapan&039; yg ada.

Sekian.

DUO 44M bakal beraksi dalam first squad awal pagi nanti.

- Lazar Markovic to prove himself tonite? Di mana posisi beliau awal pagi nanti?

- Adam Lallana sayap atau no 10? ataupun CMF?

- Betul ke Sterling dan Gerrard bakal rest?

- Kemungkinan untuk Manquillo main awal pagi nanti mungkin ada, sebab Glenjo dah main last game.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was speaking ahead of his side’s Champions League match against Real Madrid. He and midfielder Jordan Henderson were in attendance at the Bernabeu on Monday evening.

Rodgers answered a wide range of questions, including his opinions on Spanish ‘keeper Iker Casillas. He said that he believes Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the best player in the world.

“Let’s hope he doesn’t score too many more tomorrow,” said Rodgers.

The Reds trained at the famous stadium afterwards.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant his side are not heading into the Bernabeu like lambs to the slaughter and insists their current plight and defensive frailties are being over-exaggerated.

Having lost to Newcastle, scraped past Swansea and been held to a goalless draw at home to Hull in the last week, the last place you would want to take your team is Madrid.

The Champions League holders and Primera Division leaders dished out a lesson at Anfield two weeks ago, racing into a 3-0 half-time lead before easing off as they saved themselves for the Clasico against Barcelona, and the fear is they could run amok on home turf.

Few give the Reds a hope of getting anything out of the game, never mind repeating their famous 1-0 win here in 2009 – a masterclass in tactical discipline by former boss Rafael Benitez.

But Rodgers stressed there would be no conceding this game – even though the reality remains that their Group B future will be decided by the final two matches against Basle and Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets.

"We are certainly not coming here as a team expected to lose and then look at the other games as games to qualify," Rodgers said.

"For us, we see it as an opportunity. We still very much have qualification in our hands.

"It is a wonderful arena – one of the iconic football grounds in the world – and, when you come up against the best opponents, that is the challenge and what makes you perform to your best.

"They are probably the best team in the world at the moment and we really look forward to big games.

"We see them as an opportunity rather than a threat to what we are doing.

"Our defence have come under quite a bit of criticism. It is nowhere near as bad as people make out.

"What has been the frustration defensively has been the mistakes and sloppy goals we have given away.

"There haven't been too many times when the team has been outdone.

"When you have an attacking philosophy you are going to be susceptible in your defensive side because you are not sat with nine players behind the ball.

"You are looking to control and dominate the game, but we have to eradicate the errors.

"The key, even though we know it is tough, is to make sure we are compact and disciplined in our game.

"I think we showed in the previous game, although the score was 3-0, we can still have moments when we can hurt Real Madrid and that will be the idea (on Tuesday).

"There is absolutely no question we have the courage. This is a team and a group of players who have been so brave to take on the challenge I have asked them to."

Goals – both conceding and scoring – have been a problem this season. Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo – who needs one to equal Raul's Champions League record of 71 – has 20 for the campaign, which is one more than the entire Liverpool team.

Any optimism surrounding the presence of last season's second highest scorer Daniel Sturridge, missing with injuries since the end of August, on the flight out was quickly quashed by Rodgers.

"All the players have travelled, fit or injured. These games this week (they host unbeaten Premier League leaders Chelsea at the weekend) are very important.

"We will see how Daniel responds, but it is highly unlikely he will be fit."

The return of the England striker would have provided a much-needed boost to morale, but midfielder Jordan Henderson insists confidence is not being damaged by poor performances.

"It is a huge game. Real are in a good run of form so it will be a tough test for us but a great opportunity for us to show what we can do and prove people wrong," the Reds vice-captain said.

"There is still a lot of confidence in the group and team spirit isn't an issue.

"We have had a few people criticising us over the last few games so this is a massive opportunity to prove a few people wrong and see how good we are.

"We know we are not at our best yet but this is a great opportunity to show we are still a top side with great quality in the team and we just need to be a bit more ruthless in the final third."

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Monday, Brendan Rodgers claimed “Our defence have come under quite a bit of criticism. It is nowhere near as bad as people make out.” Sadly for him, the stats tell a different story.

Research by LFC statistician Dan Kennett shows just how bad Liverpool’s defence, and pairing Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren in particular, are.

Kennett explains how, with Skrtel and Lovren as centre-backs, Liverpool have conceded 12 goals in eight games, which would equate to 57 goals conceded across a full season (more than the 50 goals The Reds conceded last campaign, and 20 more than champions Man City let in in 2013/14).

Meanwhile, during those eight games, Liverpool, as a team, have made 12 defensive errors and allowed 19 “big chances” for the opposition.

Six of those 12 defensive errors have been made by Lovren and Skrtel themselves (3 each).

Those errors and chances conceded per game average at 1.2 and 2.1 per game; compared to 1.03 and 1.28 in Rodgers’ previous two campaigns.

Kennett explains that, statistically, the typical top four team makes 0.66 errors per game and concedes 1.3 big chances per game – that’s half the errors Liverpool are currently making with Skrtel and Lovren at the back.

Instead, Liverpool’s current defensive numbers are that of a lower mid-table team, writes Kennett.

There’s further bad news for Rodgers in wake of defeat to Newcastle too, with the following stats unearthed:

  • Fewest Shots In the Box under Rodgers (2)

  • Joint Fewest Shots On Target (3)

  • Joint Most Defensive Errors (4)

Speaking after that defeat, Rodgers claimed his side had “almost full control” of the game and that they were “punished by a mistake and it’s cost us the game.”

Clearly, with four defensive errors, there was more than one mistake.

Having spent over £66 million on improving his defence and goalkeeper during his time as manager, Rodgers needs to find solutions – and fast.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's Dejan Lovren looks dejected as Real Madrid CF score the third goal during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The last two matches, at home to Swansea in the League Cup and away to Newcastle on Saturday, have seen Liverpool line up with a semi-zonal marking system on corners and set pieces as Rodgers attempts to eradicate the huge Achilles heel of defending from set pieces.

Ironically, one of the most assured displays from Liverpool’s defence came against Swansea, when Kolo Toure partnered Lovren and was visibly leading the defence. The experienced Ivorian was seen pushing the side out when they dropped deep and instructing Lovren alongside him.

Lovren was signed as the new leader of Liverpool’s defence, according to Rodgers, but he’s struggled to settle and his arrival has also marginalised Mamadou Sakho – a player who many feel is a better centre-back and who could have improved on his second season in England. Sakho is a player who was captain of PSG and is first choice for France. Having spent £18 million on him a little over a year ago, Rodgers has cast him aside pretty quickly in favour of Lovren.

Liverpool head to Madrid to take on Spanish giants Real in their fourth Group B game of the Champions League on Tuesday night with qualification still firmly in their own hands. Ben Twelves discusses the team selection options available to Brendan Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool continued their struggling start to the season on Saturday suffering a dreadful defeat at Newcastle United, and the challenge doesn’t get any easier on Tuesday night as the Reds head to Spain to take on Real Madrid in the toughest fixture they’ll face in years.

It could be a case of just keeping the score-line respectable in the Spanish capital as thoughts of picking up any form of result border on insanity, but it’s a chance for the Reds to play freely knowing that the conclusion of the fixture changes nothing where progressing to the next stage is concerned.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling in action against Real Madrid CF's Alvaro Arbeloa during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The first meeting at Anfield close to two weeks ago was a complete football lesson – only after an even first 20 minute spell had passed without a goal – and the Reds know what to expect when they meet on Tuesday. However, despite knowing full well what they’re coming up against, it seems almost impossible to stop Carlo Ancelotti’s dream team who would qualify for the knockout stage with a victory.

One positive going into the tie is that no matter what the result is on the night, qualification remains firmly in Liverpool’s own hands, so Brendan Rodgers has an interesting team selection dilemma ahead of him for a game that isn’t necessarily as important as first thought.

The Team

Rodgers has two potential choices ahead of the match, which is typically followed by the toughest domestic fixture the Reds will face this season.

The Liverpool manager could play a changed team, resting key players for the weekend fixture against Chelsea, or the Reds boss could select a first choice team, giving them the experience and another chance to produce a more promising display in hope it sparks the team into life.

Whichever option the Ulsterman decides to go with, it must finally see a move away from the rigid 4-2-3-1 that is crippling the team and contributing heavily to the abject displays currently on show.

No new names have been added to the injury list, meaning Jose Enrique, Jon Flanagan, Mamadou Sakho and Suso all remain unavailable for selection, with an improving Daniel Sturridge unlikely to be ready for action as Rodgers has confirmed the whole squad have travelled for the trip.

The back line that is supposed to form the Liverpool defence could remain unchanged, with only Javier Manquillo a likely candidate to come into the team in place of Glen Johnson, who continues to produce unimpressive displays at right back.

Kolo Toure dropped back to the bench after a solid game against Swansea City last week, despite it being the ideal opportunity to remind Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren they need to be performing in order to keep their shirts, meaning a potential return to the XI seems unlikely for the Ivorian.

In midfield, Steven Gerrard is set to captain the team in the Spanish capital and he could be joined by any of Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can who will all be hopeful of a starting place.

European Football - UEFA Champions League - Group B - Real Madrid CF v Liverpool FC

The disjointed Reds attack continues to frustrate but with Sturridge unlikely to play despite travelling and other options underperforming, there’s not too much that can change – other than either supplying Mario Balotelli with a strike partner or a change of system that sees Liverpool operate without the Italian.

The Line Up

With Mignolet in goal, Manquillo should come back into the side at right back after two games on the bench, with Toure coming into the starting XI alongside Skrtel and in place of Lovren, who continues his woeful start to life since arriving on Merseyside, alongside Alberto Moreno at left back.

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Southampton FC

Rodgers must change the midfield shape and play a compact centre, and doing so should see Liverpool play with Gerrard, Can, Henderson and Coutinho in a diamond shape, with Raheem Sterling supporting Balotelli in attack.

If the Liverpool boss chooses to change the style, he could do so while throwing a curve ball at the Spanish side in the process by starting the game with the high-energy system that finished the match in the last meeting.

That would see Sterling as a central figure in attack, with Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho, in place of Lazar Markovic finished the match at Anfield, making up a flexible, unpredictable and dynamic three man forward line.

Deploying the first option and a diamond midfield should see Liverpool line-up like so:

Madrid away diamond

However, the second option of using the 4-3-3 shape that played the second half of the 3-0 defeat at Anfield should see Liverpool start like this:

Madrid false 9

With Rodgers bizarrely choosing to persist with the rigid 4-2-3-1 formation so far this campaign, I expect Liverpool to frustratingly line up like this in the Bernabeu:

4-2-3-1 madrid away 2

It’s a game that not even the staunchest Red will be expecting a result from, but that factor could work in Liverpool’s favour with the job still all to do in the final two games of the group to come.

The Reds should play with no fear in an attempt to find a solid performance, and if an almost impossible result was to come as part of a brave display in Madrid, it could be just the lift the squad needs to turn the disappointing season so far around.
