Academy observer PJ Vaughan uses the opportunity (and boredom) of the international break to run the rule over the Reds’ promising Under 21 and Under 18 players. Who will be next to make the step up to the first team?

Sheyi Ojo

SOFIA, BULGARIA - Wednesday, November 26, 2014: Liverpool's Oviemuno Ejaria Sheyi Ojo in action against PFC Ludogorets Razgrad during the UEFA Youth League Group B match at the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Ojo has progressed hugely in the last 12 months. He is, for me, at the same stage of development that Jordon Ibe was at last season. He is playing regularly for Wigan on loan and will probably benefit from another loan next season.

He will surely get some minutes in pre-season (if he is not away with the national team in an underage tournament). Ideally he would go on loan for some portion of next season and maybe get some opportunities in the cup competitions but he could also take to the first team like Sterling and Ibe did.

Currently on loan at Wigan.

Jerome Sinclair

CHESTER, WALES - Monday, March 2, 2015: Liverpool's Jerome Sinclair on his way to scoring the second goal against Chelsea during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Deva Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sinclair is the most natural goal scorer at the academy. He can score with either foot (something he’s improved of late) and is good in the air. He missed most of the previous season due to injury and has improved steadily as the season progressed. His main weakness is that he isn’t yet physically strong enough and his hold up play suffers as a result.

However when he does get stronger he has all the other ingredients to be a Premier League centre forward. He is also likely to feature in pre-season and there is every possibility that he could do very well given the opportunity, however a loan move is probably pencilled in for him next season.

Currently on loan at Wigan.

Jordan Rossiter

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Rossiter celebrates scoring the first goal against Middlesbrough on his debut during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rossiter may be small in stature but he has a huge desire and will to win. His reading of the game has always been excellent and he is a born leader. He doesn’t always get the limelight of some on the attacking players but is equally as important.

He scored on his first-team debut this season and was man of the match for the U18 two months later. Many players would sulk if asked to play at that level after playing for the first team, not Rossiter. He is likely to get some minutes in pre-season and will hopefully get a good loan move next season.

Harry Wilson

ANFIELD, ENGLAND - Thursday, October 16, 2014: Liverpool's Harry Wilson in action against Southampton's Will Wood during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Early this season Wilson struggled with the physicality of the U21s. He was outshone by Ojo, Ryan Kent and Sergi Canos, who are all stronger than him. However, since the turn of the year he has been excellent for the U21s.

His set pieces are impressive and he is always a danger with his speed and trickery. He will have to get stronger if he is to play for the first team. Sterling proved that a small young player can also be strong enough to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League. Once Wilson develops physically he has lots of attributes that should lead him into being a good player. He will probably play another season at U21 level.

Pedro Chirivella

CHESTER, ENGLAND - Friday, January 30, 2015: Liverpool's Pedro Chirivella in action against Birmingham City during the FA Youth Cup 5th Round match at the Deva Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Chirivella’s best position is the centre of a three man centre midfield but can also play as an attacking centre midfielder. His style of play gets restricted when he plays defensive midfield. The graceful Spaniard is someone you want to have in possession opposed to tracking runs and closing down space.

This season he initially struggled with the U21s but was excellent for the U18s, he has grown as a player as the season progressed and was excellent in the recent win U21 win over West Ham. Chirivella has the class to progress but may need a loan to help him adapt to the pace and physicality of the first team.

Adam Phillips

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - Wednesday, July 16, 2014: Liverpool's Adam Philips in action against Brondby IF on his debut during a preseason friendly match at Brøndby Stadion. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Phillips has been excellent for the U18s this season. He also scored 2 goals on his U21 debut against Manchester City. His style is reminiscent of Steven Gerrard. He loves a tackle and he delivers an excellent set piece. He also is an excellent crosser and can shoot accurately from distance.

Philips will probably play a lot for the U21s next season and if he continues to develop at his current rate he will surely get a first team opportunity in the next two years either with Liverpool or on loan.

Sergi Canos

KIRKBY, ENGLAND - Monday, February 16, 2015: Liverpool's Sergi Canos in action against Sunderland during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at the Kirkby Academy. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sergi Canos is a winger that can also play centre forward. He plays more like an English player than a Spanish player. He is very direct and an excellent finisher. He also has some lovely touches. He is also strong which is hugely beneficially for a young player.

He will most likely require another season at U21 level and a loan move before he is considered for the first team.

Ryan Kent

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's Ryan Kent in action against FC Basel during the UEFA Youth League Group B match at Langtree Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Kent is similar in many ways to Canos. He is direct and an excellent finisher. He is usually one of the best players on the pitch when he plays. He can play out wide or through the middle. He is a little stronger than Wilson but could probably do with getting a bit stronger.

He could easily get a chance at pre-season and is likely to go on loan. His pressing and all action style is very suited to a Brendan Rodgers team which should weigh in his favour.

Cameron Brannagan

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, September 23, 2013: Liverpool's Cameron Brannagan in action against Manchester City during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Ewen Fields. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Brannagan is a versatile midfielder with a good engine. He doesn’t have any obvious weakness to his game except maybe his physical stature. The U21s went almost 3 months without a competitive fixture around the Christmas period, this did not help with his development.

Brannagan doesn’t get the limelight of some of our other young players but is as likely to make the step up as anyone else. A good impression in pre-season will determine where his development takes place next season. A loan is the most likely option currently.

Jordan Williams

ANFIELD, ENGLAND - Friday, August 22, 2014: Welsh players Liverpool's Jordan Williams and Manchester United's Tom Lawrence during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Williams has impressed Rodgers while training with the first team. He made his first team debut in the League Cup this season. He is big and strong and loves a tackle. He can play defensive midfield or centre back.

Williams is the only defender on the list here – maybe this will change in the future there is one or two exciting young defenders at the club.

Currently on loan at Notts County.

The rest

This list is not exclusive and there are plenty of others that could get a chance. Ryan McLaughlin, Brad Smith or Kevin Stewart could have an excellent pre-season. Goalkeepers Ryan Fulton or Danny Ward might get an opportunity in goal in pre-season too. Fulton is someone I have always being impressed with when he has been fit.

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 20, 2013: Liverpool's Joao Carlos Teixeira in action against West Bromwich Albion during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Joao Carlos Teixeira could do what Ryan Mason did for Tottenham this season. He has loads of ability he just needs an opportunity and to take that opportunity. Conor Randall shows a similar level of determination that Jon Flannagan does. This might catch Rodgers’ eye. Lloyd Jones could kick on hugely in the next twelve months.

Conclusion

In many ways it is a lottery to who will be the next player to make the step up. Many will get the opportunity but only a few will take that opportunity.

The club usually only promotes a couple of players per season. So competition to be the next one to get the opportunity is fierce. It is one thing getting an opportunity it is a lot harder to take that opportunity and convince the manager you are a first team player. I’d like to think at least a couple of theses player s have a very good chance of making it.

Nathan Ake: Joined Reading on loan from Chelsea

Nathan Ake: Joined Reading on loan from Chelsea

We pick the 10 Premier League players most likely to make an impact on loan in the Championship between now and the end of the season.

Nathan Ake (Chelsea to Reading)

Ake signed a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge last year but has only featured four times for Jose Mourinho's side despite being able to play in either defence or midfield and captaining Holland all the way up to U21 level.

The Dutchman is highly thought of by the Blues, though, and has been a regular fixture in their first-team squad, with the 19-year-old an unused substitute in Chelsea's Capital One Cup final win over Tottenham.

Ake will now get competitive football under former Chelsea coach Steve Clarke at Reading, although he will not be available for the Royals' FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal after playing for Chelsea in their third-round victory over Watford.

Semi Ajayi (Arsenal to Cardiff)

Likened to Arsenal legend Sol Campbell when he first joined the club from Charlton following a successful trial period, Ajayi has not broken into Arsene Wenger's starting line-up yet.

The Nigeria U21 international defender has been named in the Gunners' matchday squad on a number of occasions this season, however, and is described on the club's official website as: "Calm and composed in possession and adept in the aerial duels."

Emiliano Martinez (Arsenal to Rotherham)

The Argentine goalkeeper has already shown his potential this season after making four appearances for Arsenal's first team because of injuries to both Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina.

Martinez, 22, kept clean sheets against Borussia Dortmund, West Brom and Southampton, making six appearances for Arsene Wenger's side.

However, the shot stopper's opportunities have been limited since the returns of Szczesny and Ospina, moving to Rotherham to help them maintain their Championship status.

Reece James (Manchester United to Huddersfield)

The 21-year-old has featured just once for Manchester United this season and it was a performance to forget as the Premier League club were beaten 4-0 by League One MK Dons in the Capital One Cup.

Since then James, who scored twice for United in pre-season against LA Galaxy, has enjoyed a loan spell at Championship club Rotherham and will look to continue his development at the same level but this time under former England left-back Chris Powell at Huddersfield.

Lloyd Isgrove (Southampton to Sheffield Wednesday)

Isgrove is well thought of at Southampton, with head of football development Les Reed recently revealing the youngster will be a key part of Ronald Koeman's squad next season.

The winger, 22, recently signed a new two-year deal at St Mary's but will now get the opportunity to impress at Championship level after joining Sheffield Wednesday.

And Isgrove has already featured for the Owls, helping Stuart Gray's side to a 3-2 away win at Rotherham.

Jerome Sinclair (Liverpool to Wigan)

Sinclair came to prominence after producing a match-winning performance for Liverpool's U21 side against Chelsea earlier this month. The striker scored and won a penalty, with former Reds defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher effusive in his praise of the youngster's performance.

The 18-year-old already holds the title of Liverpool's youngest player after featuring in a League Cup encounter against West Brom back in 2012 at the age of 16 years and six days.

And while that is Sinclair's only first-team appearance to date, he is highly regarded at Anfield, with the ex-England U16 and U17 international the club's next big academy hope.

Modou Barrow (Swansea to Nottingham Forest)

Swansea signed Barrow from Swedish second-tier club Ostersunds last summer for £1.5m and the Gambia-born striker has since featured nine times, scoring one goal for the club.

The 21-year-old was on the scoresheet during the Swans' 6-2 FA Cup win over Tranmere in January and Nottingham Forest boss Dougie Freedman knows all about the player's talent having been impressed with his performances during a trial at Bolton.

Liam Moore (Leicester to Brentford)

Moore made an excellent start to life in the Premier league with Leicester, making 14 appearances for Nigel Pearson's side, with reports even linking Arsenal and Manchester United with a move for the England U21 international after a number of excellent performances.

However, with just two starts for the Foxes in 2015 - both in the FA Cup - the defender has joined play-off chasing Brentford until the end of the season.

And Moore, 22, has already featured three times for Mark Warburton's side since leaving the King Power Stadium, helping the Championship club to victory over Huddersfield and a draw at Ipswich.

Zeki Fryers (Crystal Palace to Ipswich Town)

Fryers has been brought in by Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy in order to aid the club's Premier League promotion push between now and the end of the season.

And having played for the likes of Manchester United, Standard Liege and Tottenham Hotspur, before joining Palace on a three-year deal in September, the defender has both the experience and ability to impress at the back at Portman Road in their final seven league games this campaign.

Chuba Akpom (Arsenal to Nottingham Forest)

Akpom moved to the City Ground until the end of the season in order to gain valuable first-team experience with the Championship side under Dougie Freedman's management.

The striker, 19, has also featured for the England U16, U17, U19 and now U20 teams, while he made his Gunners debut in a Premier League match at Sunderland in the previous campaign, making eight more appearances from the bench thereafter.

After two months back following five months on the sidelines, Daniel Sturridge is now expected to miss another month, according to reports on Friday morning.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, March 8, 2015: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge rues a missed chance against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

England boss Roy Hodgson told journalists on Thursday that the 25-year-old had suffered a tear in a hip muscle and hence was withdrawn from international duty.

“When we did the scan and it turned out that there was a problem, he was absolutely devastated because he didn’t want to leave us,” said Hodgson. “There was no option because he has a slight tear and you can’t play through that.”

That final part there, classic Roy – he’d usually ask him to “play through” with another injury then. Test his resolve.

Incredibly, it’s the fourteenth injury Sturridge has suffered since arriving at Liverpool just over two years ago (according to Physio Room).

Liverpool are already without suspended duo Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard for their next three games – two of which (away to Arsenal and Blackburn) could decide their season.

Raheem Sterling will almost certainly return to attack in Sturridge’s absence, and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping Jordon Ibe can return to fitness to take up the right wing-back role.

With right wing-back looking a problem position for Liverpool this season, Jack Lusby selects Nathaniel Clyne among five to target this summer.

Within the slight unravelling of Brendan Rodgers’ 3-4-2-1 system of late, a deficiency in the right wing-back position has emerged—an area the manager must address in the transfer market this summer.

Injury to Jordon Ibe and the on-off form of Lazar Markovic has put paid to Rodgers’ regular options in this position at present, and Raheem Sterling has looked uncomfortable as cover.

Furthermore, while Javier Manquillo and Jon Flanagan remain in the squad, and Andre Wisdom is set to return from loan for pre-season, none of these options are ideal in this particular role.

So who should Liverpool target at for the right wing-back role this summer?

Here are five potential targets for the Reds, focussing statistical analysis on a balance of defensive (tackles, interceptions) and attacking (dribbles, key passes, crosses) qualities.

We’ll start off with Southampton dynamo Nathaniel Clyne.

Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

Casting an eye over the Premier League this season, one standout competitor for the league’s best right-back would be Southampton man Clyne.

The 23-year-old has consistently developed in his three seasons in the English top flight so far—so much so that Clyne is now ostensibly the England national team’s leading right-back.

Playing in Ronald Koeman’s attacking full-back system at Southampton, Clyne would be an ideal solution to Rodgers’ growing problem at right wing-back, as he is adept at both ends of the pitch.

Clyne averages 3.5 tackles and two interceptions per league game, solidifying his defensive prowess, while his average of 0.8 dribbles, 0.5 crosses and 0.6 key passes per game also highlights just how strong an attacking outlet he can be—as Liverpool found out on the opening day of the season.

With only 15 months left on his current Saints deal, Clyne will likely be hot property this summer, and Koeman’s recent suggestion that right-back is not “the most difficult position” to replace could suggest he would cash in this summer.

Clyne would likely cost Liverpool a fair amount, but would be perfect as Rodgers’ right wing-back.

Serge Aurier (Toulouse, on loan at PSG)

Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier is in an interesting position this season, on loan at Paris Saint-Germain—a club at an arguably higher level than his parent club, Toulouse.

That PSG opted for a temporary deal rather than an immediate, permanent one hints at the rigorous sanctions the Ligue 1 side is facing over Financial Fair Play ruling, and manager Laurent Blanc is able to exercise an option to buy if he wishes.

However, with Aurier playing just 10 games in the French league so far this season, it could be that he isn’t one of Blanc’s priorities this summer—if so, Rodgers must swoop in.

Of course, when Aurier has played, he has performed exceptionally.

The 22-year-old has averaged at 3.8 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per game, while also making 0.9 dribbles, 0.9 crosses and 1.2 key passes on average in Ligue 1.

Aurier was near-perfect in PSG’s 2-0 November win over Marseille, making four key passes, three successful dribbles, eight successful tackles and seven interceptions—running rampant on the right side, Aurier produced the perfectly balanced wide-defensive performance.

How Gregory Van der Wiel finds himself above Aurier in the PSG pecking order is unfathomable, and Liverpool should target the latter if he becomes available in the summer.

Kieran Trippier (Burnley)

This may not be the most fashionable suggestion, but if Liverpool opt for a more frugal approach this summer—as could well be expected, given the financial level of targets that have recently been suggested—Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier would be a great signing.

The former Manchester City academy player, 24, joined the Clarets on a permanent deal in January 2012, after impressing then-manager Eddie Howe on loan in the first half of 2011/12.

Trippier has been central to Burnley’s rise to the Premier League, with his consistent supporting performances at right-back one of Sean Dyche’s main outlets on the attack.

Trippier has made an average of 2.3 crosses, 0.7 dribbles and 1.7 key passes per league game this season, making four assists so far in 30 games—of the Premier League’s full-back union, only Everton’s Leighton Baines has created more chances per game (2.2) than Trippier.

In defensive terms, Trippier is also a solid option, with an average of 1.8 tackles and 2.1 interceptions per game this season.

As a friend of Dyche’s, this deal would likely be fairly simple for Rodgers if Burnley are relegated.

A growing talent with a mean cross and a great work rate, Trippier would be a solid addition to Rodgers’ squad.

Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

Real Madrid are supposedly close to landing a deal for FC Porto’s high-potential right-back Danilo this summer, which is bizarre given they already have an outstanding prospect in their ranks for that position in Dani Carvajal.

However, if this opens up the prospect of Carvajal leaving Los Meringues this summer, then Liverpool should take action.

Carvajal, at 23, has made 54 appearances so far for Madrid in the last two seasons since rejoining the La Liga giants from Bayer Leverkusen.

As with most Madrid first-team players, of course, there is a sense of impermanence around Carvajal’s position—a baying, fickle fanbase and a success-hunger owner ensures this.

Very solid defensively, Carvajal has made an average of three tackles and two interceptions per game in La Liga this season, while also producing 0.3 crosses, 0.8 dribbles and one key pass per game, including two assists in 23 games.

If there is any potential in this deal, Carvajal would be perfect for Liverpool.

Martin Montoya (Barcelona)

Returning to a player who has long been linked with a move to Merseyside, Barcelona also-ran Martin Montoya was apparently “100 percent” certain to leave the Catalan club in January, according to his agent.

“Right now we just want to find the best club for Martin, so he can continue his progression,” Juan de Dios Carrasco said. “Germany, Italy and England all have clubs that are already pulling strings to sign him.”

This may be the epitomy of the term ‘agent talk,’ with no deal materialising, but Montoya remains a good option for Rodgers.

Having established himself as a squad player at Barcelona, Montoya is well-versed in the attacking demands of the right-back role in the La Liga side’s system.

However, the 23-year-old is more reticent than any of the other options provided here—he has averaged just 0.7 dribbles and 0.3 key passes and 0.2 crosses per game this season, although this could be due to his peripheral status, having played just 540 minutes.

Montoya is an accomplished defensive talent, averaging three tackles and two interceptions per league game, and given a more consistent first-team role, his output would likely develop.

Liverpool could do a lot worse than Montoya at right wing-back.
