Brendan Rodgers is focusing on the positives from Liverpool’s start to the season and is hoping victory in Saturday’s Merseyside derby can kickstart their progress this year.
Liverpool have lost three of their opening five Premier League matches this term, struggling to match their early form last season which saw them take four extra points at the same stage.
But last year’s 4-0 derby win at Anfield started a run of 37 points out of 39 in the second half of the season, and Rodgers is hoping victory this weekend can have a similar impact.
"We haven't made the best of starts this season but in the like-for-like games last season, we're only a point different,” Rodgers said.
"We still have positives from it. We've got young players that have been introduced into our team, which is what we look to achieve to try to help them and educate them to come through and play for the first team.
"We go into this game with a great opportunity to get a victory in a derby game, which we will hope can provide a platform for us to go on consistently, like it did last year."
Rodgers has an excellent record in Merseyside derbies, registering three wins and a draw from the four he has presided over as Liverpool manager.
"I've loved every second of it,” he said. “They've been great, both home and away.
"But of course the performance at Anfield last season was really special because Everton were on a good run of form. They were building and developing well under Roberto and obviously came to Anfield with maybe an eye on winning, but we were exceptional.
"Every aspect of the game, our performance, our counter-attack and our finishing, was fantastic. It's a really special game between two great football clubs.”

[VIDEO] Liverpool FC vs Everton FC Promo 27.9.2014 ..
Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain has rubbished suggestions that he is seeking a move away from the Serie A club.
The Argentine has been linked with a move to Liverpool, with Italian reports claiming that the Reds are preparing an offer for the former Real Madrid forward.
Higuain has yet to score this season and, with Napoli winning just one of the first four games, speculation arose over his commitment to Rafa Benitez's side.
However, Higuain insists that he is happy at Napoli and understands why their fans are concerned at the club’s recent form.
“I’m happy to play in Naples – it’s a fantastic city to play football,” he told the Italian media.
“As in any place, when you win, everyone is happy. When you don’t, people overreact. In this period, there are critics but it’s normal.
“I chose to come here, Naples is a wonderful city.”

Chris Kamara has questioned the signing of controversial striker Mario Balotelli and says he "doesn't look like a Liverpool player".
Balotelli has scored just once - against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets - since his arrival at the end of August and his performances have come under scrutiny.
The £16million arrival from AC Milan has struggled to make an immediate impact in the Premier League and Kamara has criticised the forward's lack of movement and is unconvinced the former Manchester City man has the credentials to play for the Anfield club.
"One other topic of conversation that has come up frequently is Liverpool’s purchase of Mario Balotelli and how effective he can be for the team.
"On the face of it Balotelli doesn’t look like a Liverpool player. The one thing Rodgers demanded from (Luis) Suarez and Daniel Sturridge was absolute movement. Balotelli stands still more than he moves around so Liverpool are having to get used to him, he’s not having to get used to them.
"That’s a problem in itself. Whether Brendan is happy to accept that, I don’t know, I’m not in the dressing room. At the moment he’s still a class player but the system that Liverpool have got suffers when he’s in the team, " Kamara told his Ladbrokes blog.

Jordan Rossiter, penjaring gol pertama di perlawanan Liverpool vs Middlesbrough....
Adam Lallana’s debut was delayed by injury, but the 26-year-old is showing signs that he will become a key player, according to Henry Jackson.
Liverpool’s summer of transfer activity was extremely busy and productive, but by the time the new season started the man that had almost been forgotten about was the player the club had the spent the most money on.
Adam Lallana completed his move to Anfield in July for a reported £25m, after a superb season at Southampton which saw him nominated for the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award. Many detractors felt the fee was too much, and a knee injury picked up in pre-season seemed to put the 26-year-old at the back of the agenda.
He finally made his debut for the club against Aston Villa earlier this month, but his display was understandably rusty having not kicked a ball in anger since England’s doomed World Cup campaign in Brazil – injured in pre-season on his second day with at the club.
Against Ludogorets the following week, in what was his Champions League debut, Lallana seemed to be slowly getting into his rhythm in the second-half, only for Brendan Rodgers to, perhaps incorrectly, substitute him with a quarter of the game remaining. In what was a fairly lifeless display by the Reds, the creative midfielder was one of the few players who looked capable to producing something out of nothing.
The former Southampton man was then left out of Liverpool’s starting eleven for the trip to West Ham last Saturday, as Rodgers opted for the more defence-minded Lucas Leiva in his preferred 4-4-2 diamond formation.
A poor first-half display by the Reds led to the anonymous Brazilian being replaced by Lallana at half-time, and he was comfortably one of his side’s best players when he came on. He ran with the ball, showed some nice trickery and generally looked a class act. It wasn’t necessarily an outstanding performance, but it was clear that there is an abundance of natural talent at his disposal.
Despite the hugely disappointing 3-1 loss, Lallana could walk off the pitch with his head held high. Rickie Lambert, who was also with him at Southampton for several years, spoke of his admiration for the 26-year-old to Liverpool’s official website on Monday:
“He’s going to bring a whole new dimension to the team. He was unlucky to get injured at a vital time in pre-season. No player likes to get injured at that time. He’s come back and he’s looking strong. He’s only going to get stronger.
“He’s missed out on a few weeks, and there’s nothing he can do about that. But his attitude has been first-class in training. He’s been desperate to get back.
“That extra strength and that extra speed will come back over the next few weeks and you will be seeing the best of Adam Lallana, without a doubt.”
Lambert’s words came to fruition on Tuesday evening, as Lallana’s Liverpool career took another positive step. He was voted Man of the Match following an excellent performance against Middlesbrough, on another nervy night at Anfield.
The England international was the creative hub of the side throughout, showing some clever touches, good movement and an audacious piece of trickery in the lead-up to Suso’s goal. He also converted twice in the epic penalty shootout victory to round off a very fine display.
With four games now under his belt, Lallana is returning to something close to full fitness, and must be in line to start against Everton in Saturday’s much-anticipated Merseyside derby at Anfield.
With Philippe Coutinho out of favour after a poor start to the campaign, Lucas easily past his best and Joe Allen and Emre Can both unavailable through injury, he will likely play on the left-hand side of the midfield diamond.
There would be no better way to announce himself to the Anfield faithful than to score the winner against their local rivals, and it would another confidence boost as he tries to win over those who feel he has cost the club too much.
There haven’t been many positives to shout about so far this for Liverpool, with three defeats in their opening five Premier League, but the ever-improving Adam Lallana is most certainly one of them.
He still has some way to go before he gets back to the form that earned him the move in the first place, but the Reds have a real gem on their hands. He will prove those detractors wrong.

We have statistics surrounding every Premier League game this weekend, with good news for Liverpool & Arsenal ahead of the respective derbies.
With both the Merseyside and North London derbies on the horizon ahead of a busy Saturday in the Premier League, there's some positive reading for Liverpool and Arsenal fans, but the complete opposite for their Everton and Spurs counterparts.
Chelsea will also look to stay atop the summit when they take on Aston Villa in an historically goal-laden clash, while both Manchester City and unlikely pacesetters Southampton will also seek another win.
Elsewhere, West Ham will hope to overcome their Manchester United hoodoo, Sunderland and Newcastle look for their first wins, while there's a peculiar record in the West Brom vs. Burnley clash.
We take a look at the key Opta statistics ahead of the sixth round of games.
Liverpool v Everton, 12.45pm

Burnley have gained three points from just one goal in the Premier League this season.

Premier League pre-match stats, Week 6
We have statistics surrounding every Premier League game this weekend, with good news for Liverpool & Arsenal ahead of the respective derbies.
With both the Merseyside and North London derbies on the horizon ahead of a busy Saturday in the Premier League, there's some positive reading for Liverpool and Arsenal fans, but the complete opposite for their Everton and Spurs counterparts.

The League Cup may have been devalued in recent years, but Steven Scragg doesn’t think that should be the case. Embrace Liverpool’s rich history in the competition.
I love the League Cup, or whatever sponsor’s name it currently resides under.
The League Cup changes it’s partner in sponsorship on a regular basis. Everyone eventually reaches an age when you either call it by whatever name it had when you stopped paying attention to such things, or you plump for the secure method of simply referring to it by its ‘birth name’. I go with its birth name; otherwise I’d still be calling it ‘The Worthington Cup’.
A cursory Google search unearths the concept that I stopped paying attention over a decade ago. The League Cup hasn’t been the ‘Worthington Cup’ since Liverpool beat Manchester United in the 2003 final. I also found out that it’s shockingly over two decades since Rumbelows effectively went bust, while I completely forgot that Coca-Cola once had their name embossed upon the tournament.
For me Opal Fruits are Opal Fruits instead of Starburst. A Marathon will always be a Marathon rather than Snickers. I will insist upon striding into a newsagents and confusing shop assistants that weren’t even born in, let alone remember 1983 by asking for a Marathon. The League Cup will always be The League Cup to me.
Liverpool’s League Cup History
I came to football coherence at the beginning of the 1980s, at a time when Liverpool simply didn’t lose League Cup games. After an embarrassing 0-1 defeat away at 4th Division Bradford City in the 1st leg of the Second Round on August 27th 1980, a defeat Liverpool rectified with a 4-0 win in the 2nd leg at Anfield, before going on to lift the trophy for the very first time, the club then remained unbeaten in the competition again until losing 0-1 away at Tottenham Hotspur over four years later on October 31st 1984, Halloween no less.
Between those losses to Bradford and Spurs; Liverpool went 39 games unbeaten in the competition, and became the only English football club to win a trophy four times in succession, an achievement that still stands to this very day. It is one of the most under-rated accomplishments in football history, plus it was all done during the competitions heyday when all sides fielded full strength line-ups. Liverpool saw off some heavyweight opposition in each and every one of those finals, and along the way to reach Wembley in the first place.
West Ham United in 1981 were FA Cup holders and storming their way to the Second Division title, losing just four league games in the process, as well as a run to the last eight of the European Cup Winners Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur in 1982, Manchester United in 1983 and Everton in 1984 all went on to lift that years FA Cup after being beaten in the League Cup Final by Liverpool. The FA Cup suddenly became a consolation prize in my eyes for those we beat in the League Cup Final.
After all, they would even be given soft opposition in those FA Cup Finals wouldn’t they? QPR, Brighton and Hove Albion and Watford? QPR were a mid-table Second Division side, Brighton relegated and Watford were well, they were just Watford. The FA Cup was for losers really. Absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Liverpool kept shooting themselves in the foot in that particular competition. Honest. The League Cup was where it was at.
I was gutted when we lost that game at Spurs in late 84. It was weird watching Norwich City beat Sunderland in the final of ‘our competition’. Natural order seemed set to be restored in 1986 until we contrived to score all four goals in the 2nd leg of the semi-final against QPR in the 2-2 draw at Anfield. By the time we lost to Arsenal in the 1987 final things had changed a bit, although it was no less unsettling an experience, but by then Oxford United had gone on to win it in 86 and we’d won an FA Cup for the first time in my lifetime. The FA Cup was now in fashion for Liverpool fans.
The competition had changed names and trophies once again. The’ Littlewoods Cup’ looked like an oversized silver drinking goblet. The Milk Cup trophy hadn’t been an aesthetic joy by any means, but it was ours, while I’ve always preferred the three handled original League Cup trophy. At that 87 final we knew Ian Rush was off to Juventus, while Kenny Dalglish had gone into semi-retirement as a player and was only on the bench.
It was the first time we lost a game in which Rush had scored, plus we lost from being ahead. It was a culture shock really. 1987/88 was the response however and the League Cup lost its relevance in the blizzard that was Barnes-Beardsley-Aldridge and the constant chase of league and cup doubles that just didn’t quite happen when they really should have.
Once we lost the art of winning league titles then it became an occasional joy to win the competition again. I’ve had some great days out watching us win the League Cup, particularly in Cardiff. Yes, there’s a degree of ‘meh’ about the competition, but everyone tends to sit up and take notice if we drift our way through to the last eight. Who doesn’t want to be part of a sea of red at a cup final? It’s one of the greatest things you can be a part of.
Middlesbrough
Tuesday night against Middlesborough was nuts. The League Cup excels in being ‘nuts’. I’ve never witnessed a penalty shoot-out that went around the entire block of players before, resulting in them having to step up a second time. I’d guess you’ll be waiting a very long time before you see that happen again. In the world of ‘anything is possible’ that Brendan Rodgers has worked so hard to nurture at Anfield perhaps the only shock should be is that it took this long to happen?
You can’t read much into Tuesday night’s game as far as it being a continuation of what’s gone on in 2014/15 so far. In many ways the modern-day League Cup, certainly this early in the campaign, is almost like a little moon that orbits the main planetary body of the Premier League and Champions League entities. Maybe half of the side that walked onto the pitch against Middlesborough are in with a shout of starting against Everton on Saturday? Not all of those ‘in with a shout’ will actually start on Saturday. 3 or 4 might start.
Games like Tuesday are remarkably difficult for a player to walk away from in a stronger squad position than the one they occupied beforehand. Most players will either ebb away further still in the manner Kolo Toure in all likelihood did, or they will more or less maintain their status quo with an ‘OK’ performance, such as Lucas perhaps. Occasionally the spark and exuberance of youth will ignite, as in the cases of Jordan Rossiter and Jordan Williams.
Very occasionally you’ll get to see the regeneration of a player that’s been written off by not just the fans, but possibly even by the manager and coaching staff too. Suso emerged from behind the glittery and golden ‘Stars in their Eyes’ curtain on this occasion. There is a good player there and I’d like to see him involved in the weeks ahead. Maybe he can walk away from this season with a League Cup winner’s medal in his pocket.

Liverpool host local rivals Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season at Anfield in Saturday’s early kick-off. Ben Twelves looks ahead to the grudge match.
Brendan Rodgers’ Reds will be looking to make it two wins in a week at Anfield on Saturday when they face their first derby of the season against city rivals, Everton.
The Reds are desperate to find some form in the Premier League, having suffered two disappointing defeats in a row and 3 in total from the first 5 league games of the new season. There’s no more important time to turn fortunes around than Saturday’s derby fixture.
However, somewhat thankfully for both sides heading into this game, form is likely to go out of the window as ever with the high tempo, all-action clashes of which for the first time since the 2002/03 season, will be played at Anfield first up rather than Goodison Park.
Last season’s corresponding fixture was much more memorable than the 0-0 played out that day in December 2002, and proved to be one of the most unforgettable derby games in recent times, as the Reds thrashed Roberto Martinez’s side 4-0 to begin their assault on the Premier League title.
Steven Gerrard opened the scoring and Daniel Sturridge added two more before half time to hand Liverpool a resounding 3-0 lead at the interval. Luis Suarez then scored a magnificent solo goal to make it 4-0, before Sturridge wasted the chance to record a special derby hat-trick firing his penalty over the bar and into the Kop.
Team News
Joe Allen, Emre Can, Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan are all ruled due to on-going injuries but Rodgers will desperately be hoping to have some of his first choice players suffering with injury back in time of the clash.
The Liverpool manager confirmed that he is set to afford maximum recovery time to players whose fitness is touch and go, meaning some late decisions will be made over the starting team, with Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho – who both missed Tuesday’s cup tie – and Daniel Sturridge all hoping to be fit in time
Despite injuries, there’s set to be wholesale changes to the side that limped to a shoot-out victory over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, with Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno, Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli all likely to be recalled to the starting XI after they sat out against Middlesbrough.
Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Lazar Markovic will all be hopeful of retaining their place in the starting XI, supporting Balotelli in the Liverpool attack.
Rodgers also confirmed that contract talks with representatives of talented Spanish attacker Suso are continuing, and the 20-year-old will be hoping to build on his goal in midweek by featuring in the squad once again.
Opposition
As with Liverpool, Martinez’s side have also endured a disappointingly slow start to the league season. The Blues have one less point to show from their opening 5 games than Rodgers’ men, having won only 1 game as they currently occupy 14th place in the table.
The Toffees arrive at Anfield off the back of a 3-0 defeat and subsequent League Cup exit to Swansea, as Martinez rotated his side against his old club ahead of Saturday’s game. £28 million man Romelu Lukaku was benched as were fellow regulars Kevin Mirallas and James McCarthy.
Steven Naismith, John Stones, Phil Jagielka, Gareth Barry and Leighton Baines were all left out of the squad of completely making them all extremely likely to be recalled to the team on Saturday.
However, Seamus Coleman and Steven Pienaar are doubts for the match and the Everton boss has confirmed that both will be assessed in the lead up to the clash.
Everton will be hoping to break their long standing Anfield duck of having not recorded victory in a derby fixture away from home since 1999, but the Blues may have to improve on having the worst defensive record in the Premier League – having conceded 13 goals in 5 games – if they want to do so.
Liverpool v Everton will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 with kick-off at 12:45pm.
