Adam Lallana vowed Liverpool will keep fighting for the top four despite their hopes fading.

The Reds’ 0-0 draw at West Brom on Saturday left them playing catch up for the Champions League spots. They are fifth, seven points adrift of their Barclays Premier League rivals after Manchester United’s defeat at Everton on Sunday.

But midfielder Lallana believes Brendan Rodgers‘ side will not give up the chase as they try to gatecrash the top four.

“We’ll dust ourselves down, go again, go to Hull (on Tuesday) and try to get three points to hopefully put as much pressure on the teams above us as possible,” he told the club’s official site.

“I still feel that if we pick up maximum points from the remaining games, we’ll be unlucky not to get into that fourth spot. It’s still possible and while it’s still possible, we’ll keep giving our all.

“We’ve just got to focus on ourselves. It’ll be a difficult place to go – they’re still fighting for their lives down at the bottom.

“It will be a tough game, but we’ve got to go there and play our game and hopefully we’ll get three points. You want to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.”

Jordon Ibe hit the bar for Liverpool at The Hawthorns while Boaz Myhill saved from Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson.

Liverpool centre-back Kolo Toure is linked with a move to Major League Soccer in Sunday’s Mirror newspaper.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, March 8, 2015: Liverpool's Kolo Toure in action against Blackburn Rovers' Alex Baptiste during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Ivorian stalwart, 34, is out of contract at Anfield this summer and despite being offered a new one-year deal at Anfield he looks set to leave the club.

The report claims Toure has been offered a one-year extension at Liverpool but wants a two-year deal, which MLS side New York Red Bulls are offering him.

Last week we reported how the chances of Toure remaining at the club were diminishing.

The likeable and charismatic defender joined the Reds on a free transfer from Man City in 2013 and is now seeking a new challenge after 13 years playing in England. He has made 44 appearances for LFC so far.

Toure is one of 16 players we expect to leave Liverpool this summer.

New York Red Bulls compete in MLS’ eastern conference, they’re seeking quality signings to compete with new city-rivals New York City FC – who have Frank Lampard joining the club this summer.

NYRB lost marquee signing Thierry Henry to retirement in the summer but do have the prolific MLS goalscorer Bradley Wright Philips among their ranks (try not to laugh).

With Toure linked with a move away from Merseyside, links to Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopolous returned on Sunday.

We round-up the latest transfer rumours affecting Liverpool, as calls for summer reinforcements grow louder by the day.

Newspapers

What better way to take our minds of Saturday’s drab goalless draw with West Brom than to take a look at the current rumour mill.

The stalemate at the Hawthorns on Saturday has only increased calls for Liverpool to strengthen their squad significantly at the end of the season, particularly in attack.

Here are the latest rumours affecting the Reds:

Memphis Depay

depay1-700x357

Memphis Depay has been the biggest transfer talking point of the week, with numerous reports suggesting Liverpool held “secret talks” with the PSV Eindhoven attacker this week.

It is alleged that the Reds have moved into pole position ahead of Man United for the signature of the highly-rated Dutchman.

Owing to Liverpool’s history of losing out to rivals when it comes to signing big-name players, fans won’t be getting overly excited about the prospect of this one coming off.

Indeed, the Echo’s James Pearce has already signalled as much, writing: “The Reds are interested in the £20million rated PSV Eindhoven attacker but Anfield officials fear he will make the switch to Old Trafford instead because of the availability of Champions League football.”

Likelihood: 2.5/5

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

01.12.2011, Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, GER, UEFA Europa League, FC Schalke 04 (GER) vs Steaua Bukarest (ROM), im Bild Jubel Kyriakos Papadopoulos (#14 Schalke) nach dem 1-0 // during FC Schalke 04 (GER) vs Steaua Bukarest (ROM) at Veltins Arena, Gelsenkirchen, GER, 2011-12-01. Recent transfer round-ups haven’t felt right without a constant mention of Kyriakos Papadopoulos, but you can rest easy because he’s once again being tipped for a summer move to Merseyside.

The Greece international has been linked with Liverpool for a couple of years now, and the Mirror claim “Brendan Rodgers has resurrected his interest” in the player.

The 23-year-old has suffered terribly with a knee injury in recent seasons, and is currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen from Schalke.

Papadopoulos’ contract at Schalke expires this summer, and Rodgers is reportedly keen to bring him in on a free transfer to bolster his defence.

Don’t rule it out, even if there are definite question marks about his long-term fitness.

Likelihood: 2.5/5

James Milner

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Saturday, December 14, 2013: Manchester City's James Milner in action against Arsenal during the Premiership match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

James Milner is certainly a player many are expecting to become a Liverpool player this summer, and the (rather untrustworthy) Daily Star believe it is a “done deal”.

The reports claim that, despite interest from Arsenal and Roma, Rodgers has guaranteed Milner a more central midfield role- his position of preference- and that a free transfer has been agreed.

The 29-year-old England international is not starting many games at Man City, and will surely feel that regular football is paramount at this stage in his career.

There has been plenty of negativity surrounding the possible purchase of Milner, but he is consistent, versatile and a proven winner. Liverpool could certainly make worse signings.

Likelihood: 4/5

Stevan Jovetic

NEW YORK, USA - Wednesday, July 30, 2014: Liverpool's Sebastian Coates in action against Manchester City's Stevan Jovetic during the International Champions Cup Group B match at the Yankee Stadium on day ten of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

That same report also suggests Stevan Jovetic is one of Rodgers’ first-choice attacking targets this summer.

The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool in the past, and the £16m-rated star may well jump at the chance of a new challenge.

Like Milner, Jovetic has found regular football extremely hard to come by at the Etihad this season, with Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko often preferred up front. Wilfried Bony’s arrival in January has only put further doubt over his future.

A lack of potency in attack has been a huge achilles heel for the Reds this season, but whether Jovetic would be a guaranteed source of goals is questionable, despite his undoubted ability.

Likelihood: 2/5

Christian Benteke

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 19, 2015: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno and Joe Allen tackle Aston Villa's Christian Benteke during the FA Cup Semi-Final match at Wembley Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are lining up a £30million deal for Christian Benteke, with Rickie Lambert potentially heading the other way.

The bruising Belgian outlined his quality against the Reds last week, scoring in Villa’s 2-1 FA Cup semi-final victory, and has proved to be a thorn in Liverpool’s side several times in the past.

Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini have all failed to thrive in Daniel Sturridge‘s absence through injury this season, and at least one new striker is needed.

A big overhaul looks likely in that department, and there is an argument to say that none of those three could be at Anfield next year.

Rodgers clearly doesn’t rate Balotelli, Lambert will surely move on and Borini is not Liverpool class, despite his admirable effort levels.

Danny Ings is another who could well be at Anfield next season, regardless of whether Benteke joins or not, while Divock Origi will return from his loan spell at Lille.

Likelihood: 2/5

‘Tiada pengurus sebagus saya’

Namun, Rodgers percaya beliau personaliti tepat mengemudi kejayaan Liverpool.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers claims his side were outstanding despite a 0-0 draw against a West Bromwich Albion side who had conceded seven goals to relegation threatened sides in their last two home games.

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers was asked by BBC Sport post-match if he got the reaction he wanted from his players after last week’s FA Cup semi-final defeat. “I thought they were excellent,” he said. “After a very disappointing performance and result last week we knew this game was going to be important.

“Okay we didn’t get the win, but our overall game was outstanding. We just couldn’t get the final pass to get the goal or that little bit of luck you need sometimes.”

Rodgers noted the difficulties breaking down Tony Pulis’ side, noting that “Tony’s side don’t concede many goals.”

West Brom conceded four against QPR and three against Leicester City in their two home games prior to playing Liverpool.

The hyperbole continued as he described individual performances. Emre Can was both “incredible” and “outstanding”, while Steven Gerrard was, again, described as “one of the outstanding players on the field today”. Rodgers had used the same word to describe the captain’s Wembley performance last week.

OPINION: Stop the hyperbole, Brendan

We round-up the best of the morning newspaper reaction following Saturday’s forgettable 0-0 draw between Liverpool and West Brom.

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's Dejan Lovren looks dejected after missing a late chance against West Bromwich Albion during the Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

This was effectively the day the Reds’ season came to an end; certainly in terms of their Champions League hopes.

This stalemate against Tony Pulis’ side, coupled with Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa, surely puts a top-four finish out of Liverpool’s reach now.

The showdown at the Hawthorns was dominated by Brendan Rodgers‘ men from start to finish, but despite having over 70% possession, you never really felt that elusive goal was coming.

Liverpool’s lack of threat in front of goal remains a serious problem, and one that needs to be addressed this summer. That and several other issues.

Drab performance

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling in action against West Bromwich Albion FC during the Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There were several journalists unimpressed at Liverpool’s level of desire to win the game, on what felt like a real end-of-season clash:

James Pearce (Liverpool Echo)-

The Reds failed to produce the response Brendan Rodgers had demanded following their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Aston Villa as they produced another disjointed display.

The relegation-threatened Baggies defended in numbers throughout and Liverpool weren’t good enough to break them down.

Rob Draper (Daily Mail)-

In a non-combative first half, lethargy seemed to be the watchword of the day, both sides seemingly intent on not expending too much energy lest they be tired for their imminent summer holidays.

To West Brom and Liverpool’s credit, they did at least rouse themselves to contest a lively second half but, even so, the contrast with this time last year was marked for both teams.

John Percy (Daily Telegraph)-

Steven Gerrard made his 500th Premier League appearance but that will be the only memory of this insipid stalemate which surely extinguished any lingering hopes of a Champions League place.

Liverpool possessed the cutting edge of a plastic spatula, with Jordon Ibe producing their best chance by striking the crossbar, and Rodgers is counting down the days until he can perform surgery on his squad.

Mike Walters (The Mirror)-

This is supposed to be an entertainment industry. Television companies are paying £5 billion to show it from next year. And we all have bad days at the office where little goes right.

But there are few excuses worthy of the name for such insipid, uninspired dross – for the most part – served up at the Hawthorns.

Stuart James (Guardian)-

In the end it was a game that confirmed to Brendan Rodgers what he already knew. With Luis Suárez long gone and Daniel Sturridge absent once again, Liverpool are unrecognisable from the team that swept opponents aside last season.

Good and bad performers

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's Dejan Lovren clears the ball off the line against West Bromwich Albion during the Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Draper was impressed with the performance of Dejan Lovren, who produced arguably his best display in a Reds shirt to date:

If Rodgers’ wanted to see signs of hope, he need look no further than Lovren’s display — finally he looked like the centre half they signed from Southampton.

David Usher of ESPN echoed that sentiment:

While Liverpool’s defence were never put under any sustained pressure, Lovren won his personal duels all afternoon.

Whether it was against the powerful Victor Anichebe, the pacy Saido Berahino or substitute Brown Ideye, who possesses a combination of both, Lovren came out on top every time. He also made a vital goal-line clearance and was Liverpool’s best performer on a frustrating day.

The Independent felt the opposite about Mario Balotelli though, who became less and less effective as the game went on:

Beyond one fiercely-struck half-volley which went just over, Balotelli’s impact was negligible, as he drifted into innocuous areas of the field far too often.

His runs were either too predictable or non-existent, the few dangerous crosses LIverpool did produce flashed by without him even in the frame and he failed to have a shot in anger in the 74 minutes he managed before being substituted.

Liverpool’s more pressing problem at the end of the season might be less about getting the best out of Balotelli, and more about getting rid of him.

They also focussed on Steven Gerrard‘s relative lack of impact, as his depressing final season at Anfield continues:

After the dreadful disappointment of seeing his FA Cup dreams thwarted, Steven Gerrard might at least have thought that Fate would throw him a bone on the occasion of his 500th appearance in the Premier League.

But this appears to be one season when his fairytales are being shredded before his very eyes: there was no goal for the midfielder, and few sparks of inspiration in a game that was crying out for a creative lift.

ESPN‘s Miguel Delaney almost felt sorry for the Liverpool legend:

The 34-year-old looked what he is, a spent force who took all the energy out of Liverpool. That is one of the saddest aspects about this season for Gerrard, a player who once seemed to permanently play at hurricane speeds.

Now, opposition sides know to just let him have the ball, because he won’t be able to do all that much with it. It is reminiscent of Roy Keane’s final season with Manchester United — 2005-06 — except with less of the anger.

Next up for Liverpool is Tuesday trip to Hull (19:45pm GMT), before hosting QPR next Saturday (15:00pm GMT). Let us know your thoughts on the West Brom game in the comments below.

Glen Johnson: B-

Hampir terperangkap dengan helah soalan daripada WBA. Gardner hampir menjaringkan gol, nasib baik berjaya diatasi. Dia banyak membantu meja tengah dan meja depan yg sukar untuk memecahkan molekul treller yg beratur.

Dejan Lovren: A

Ininbaru aksi 20m.

Martin Skrtel: B+

Kesilapan beliau hampir hampir membenarkan Morrison untuk mendapatkan gol .susah nak cerita sangat sebab tak banyak set soalan untuk budak meja belakang. 91% passes completed dan juga satu chance created.

Emre Can: B-

Baru saja menerima biasiswa BSN yg lumayan. Mungkin sebab excited sangat nak beli beg baru membuatkan dia tak fokus dalam kelas. Low contribution secara keseluruhannya.

Raheem Sterling: C-

Jika sebelum ini dia ditangkap merokok. Tetapi kali ini dia macam banyak kena speed trap. Tak ada precisive dan incisive contribution. Sangat low influence untuk dicalonkan biasiswa 150k .

Philippe Coutinho: B

Tak cukup power! Adakah kerana pengaruh rakan sebaya ? Dan cuma 2 on target.

Mario Balotelli: C-

5 shots on goal tetapi 0 on target.

Calon Persendirian

Adam Lallana: C

Tak cukup influence di depan. Selalu bagi jawapan salah. Mungkin sebab MC hampir sebulan dan banyak miss kelas tambahan. Cuma 14 passes dan 71% saja completed

Fabio Borini: C-

Nak cakap dia ditugaskan kutip kertas dia masuk dewan tak lah lewat sangat. Lepas tu kertas soalan subjektif kosong tak berjawab. 0 shots on goal.
Dia jawab soalan objektif tu pun sebab boleh tembak. Dia jawab 1 soalan saja. 1 pass.

PENILAIAN KE ATAS GURU

Brendan Rodgers : B

5 shots on goal tetapi 0 on target.

Calon Persendirian

Adam Lallana: C

Tak cukup influence di depan. Selalu bagi jawapan salah. Mungkin sebab MC hampir sebulan dan banyak miss kelas tambahan. Cuma 14 passes dan 71% saja completed

Fabio Borini: C-

Nak cakap dia ditugaskan kutip kertas dia masuk dewan tak lah lewat sangat. Lepas tu kertas soalan subjektif kosong tak berjawab. 0 shots on goal.
Dia jawab soalan objektif tu pun sebab boleh tembak. Dia jawab 1 soalan saja. 1 pass.

PENILAIAN KE ATAS GURU

Brendan Rodgers : B

Liverpool failed to bounce back to winning ways on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw at West Brom in a game which will probably go down as one of the worst viewing spectacles of the season.

Philippe Coutinho went close for the Reds on a couple of occasions and Jordon Ibe hit the crossbar,  but despite Liverpool dominating possession there were few clear-cut chances on show and the Baggies threatened almost as many times at the opposite end.

It marks a dismal week for the Reds who have now won just two of their last five and look in danger of letting the season peter out entirely. Brendan Rodgers doesn’t have time on his side to convince plenty of the supporters, at least, that he’s the man to help revamp things in summer—so it’s with him we start as we look at five talking points from the Hawthorns bore-fest.

Brendan Rodgers’ Tactical Indecision

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

This is a real issue now for Liverpool. Tactical versatility and being unpredictable is not just a whim, it’s an asset for a football team—but only when it’s working. Only when it has purpose. For the Reds’ last three matches, they beat Newcastle with a 4-3-3, reverted to a 3-4-2-1 for the FA Cup semi-final defeat against Aston Villa and then went back once more to 4-3-3 to start the West Brom fixture.

There is no consistency or, seemingly, trust from Rodgers in one system being any better than the other and it’s not even a case of adapting the XI for players who are returning from injury or similar. This week’s change-arounds didn’t have the desired impact and, really, there can’t be much excuse for the low tempo of the performance, given the time on the ball Liverpool’s players had.

Rodgers’ constant switching of tactics also leaves the summer transfer window in limbo, as it’s nearly impossible to predict what type of players Liverpool need without knowing the shape they’ll take.

The boss would probably be wise to now stick with the 4-3-3 for the rest of the season, seeing which players rise to the challenge of taking maximum points and keeping Liverpool at least in fifth…but his time at Anfield doesn’t exactly point to Rodgers doing so.

Glen Johnson: Is There a Less-Bothered Man in Football?

As if the Reds hadn’t had enough reminders over the past couple of seasons, Glen Johnson’s performance from left-back against an almost non-existent West Brom attack highlighted once more the absolute disregard he has for a place in the team, the shirt on his back and, quite possibly, the notion that anything important is going on around him at all.

Almost everything positive West Brom managed to produce in the game (yes, all three things) came down his side of the pitch, starting with an innocuous-looking long ball. Johnson mis-controlled it, failed to react and ultimately lost out to Saido Berahino, and was lucky not to see the forward head toward goal after losing possession.

Things didn’t get any better defensively as Johnson failed to stop crosses, never looked like keeping pace with those who ran past him and offered little in build-up play.

Dejan Lovren had a Decent Impact

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's Dejan Lovren applauds the supporters after the goal-less draw against West Bromwich Albion during the Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Liverpool’s £20 million centre-back Dejan Lovren has had an awful campaign, with his best games invariably those where he sat on the bench and watched Mamadou Sakho.

Against West Brom, the Croatian put in a much more respectable performance—but it’s nothing to get carried away with. The Baggies mustered almost nothing of note until the final 10 minutes of the match, so much of Lovren’s good work was carried out under no pressure, high up the field and with recovery room behind him if anything did go wrong.

That said, it would still be churlish not to accept that the old adage remains true: you can only beat what’s in front of you. Liverpool didn’t win, but Lovren “won” his battle in denying Berahino much of a sniff of the ball, nipping in to win challenges or possession before support could come the way of the striker—and making one hugely important goalline clearance. It was certainly nothing you’d expect him to be incapable of, kicking clear a bouncing ball, but the way the season has gone for Lovren he could have sliced it into the roof of the net and nobody would have shown surprise.

Did he perform £20 million well? No. But he put in a good display, was certainly more solid than Martin Skrtel and had a nice hour or so on the pitch where all he needed to do was pass the ball back to Steven Gerrard.

Mario Balotelli: the Debate Continues

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli in action against West Bromwich Albion's Gareth McAuley during the Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Your views on Mario Balotelli’s 70 minutes on the pitch will invariably be shaped by your views on Mario Balotelli’s entire 2014-15 season.

The Italian striker had a couple of long-range strikes, linked neatly with Jordon Ibe once or twice and dropped deep to get involved in build-up play, but also never really looked to run in behind the West Brom defence, didn’t hold up the ball inside the box and certainly never threatened Boaz Myhill.

Whether the instruction was for him to find space outside the box or not, Balotelli did it, but without runners from midfield Liverpool didn’t take advantage of the gaps he left in attack. As such, there was rarely much of a penalty box presence and the team’s failure to score a goal will inevitably see spotlight fall on the No. 45.

He wasn’t terribly sharp, but hasn’t had much football. He didn’t have a strike partner, but also lost possession too easily anyway. He didn’t score, but nobody gave him a clear chance.

How much is Balotelli’s fault, and how much is systemic of the team?

The only obvious outcome from it all is that, right now, they’re not compatible together. Your views on Mario will dictate whether you think the team needs to incorporate him better, or the Reds need to get rid.

Creativity, Flair, Ideas…Movement

Football - FA Premier League - West Bromwich Albion FC v Liverpool FC

Faced with a team organised and directed by Tony Pulis, Liverpool absolutely had to play with three key ingredients at the Hawthorns: Pace, width and movement.

A front three was a reasonable way to go given Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson were able to push on from midfield, but Liverpool’s play was all too slow, too predictable, too disconnected to really trouble the Baggies back line. Infrequent were the runs down the channels between full-back and centre-back, almost never were the full-backs seen on the touchline.

Everything came narrow, unless Ibe or Raheem Sterling were expected to take on three players at once on the outside, and the lack of movement and slow rate of passing was never going to break the home side down. Whether it was the come-down after the cup exit or an end-of-season match that Liverpool just couldn’t up the tempo of, a 0-0 draw looked on the cards almost from the opening 10 minutes.

It was poor fair all round and it’s back to the drawing board for Rodgers.
