Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has provided a brief update on where the club are at with regards the intended redevelopment of Anfield stadium.

ianayre

Ayre was speaking on Monday as the club unveiled another commercial agreement, a reported £32m deal with Garuda Indonesia to become the club’s first training kit sponsor.

Liverpool confirmed their intentions to remain at Anfield back in October 2012, while a report a year later in The Independent explained problems over the purchasing of properties had arisen.

Ayre explained:

“There are two or three hurdles we have to get over. The first is property, and we are making strides on that front. The second step is getting planning permission, and the third is construction.

“If we get over each of those hurdles, we have the certainty to move things forward. What we don’t want to do is start promising things we can’t deliver, but we’re very pleased with the progress we’re making.”

In September last year Ayre said:

“Our ambition is to stay at Anfield, and we’re about 90% down the road in securing proprieties affected by redevelopment. I’m reasonably confident, the first phase will be closer to 60,000 capacity.”

Slow progress has become a source of frustration among some supporters.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre spoke to the media within an hour of each other on Monday, both quizzed on the club’s failure to sign target Mohamed Salah.

BANGKOK, THAILAND - Friday, July 26, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Managing Director Ian Ayre during a press conference at the Plaza Athenee Hotel ahead of their preseason friendly match against Thailand. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Salah, the Egyptian winger, signed for Chelsea over the weekend in a deal reportedly worth £12m. Liverpool had been heavily linked with the 21-year-old.

Ayre was speaking at a rather hyped up commercial announcement that saw Indonesian airline Garuda become the club’s first training kit sponsor – a deal worth a reported £16m per season over the next two years – while Rodgers was speaking at his pre-Everton press conference.

Ayre claimed “The player decided he didn’t want to come to Liverpool.”

While Rodgers, merely an hour later told reporters “It was deemed in this case that we couldn’t do a deal and Chelsea could. So the boy has gone there.”

Two quite contradictory statements.

Ayre said “We know what the value of the player is and how far we were prepared to go. That is something myself, Brendan and the others involved in the process discuss openly. We won’t overpay. In every transfer window you win some and lose some.”

Liverpool are certainly losing some this transfer window. They’re yet to sign anyone and when quizzed about the transfer window Rodgers was far from optimistic.

“There’s certainly nothing imminent” he confessed. He explained that his desire was to sign players who can improve the first XI, not just take up a place in the squad, saying he’d rather promote a youngster than do that.

“If no one comes in, that’ll galvanise us even more” claimed Rodgers. “We’ve got a group who can really be up there.”

The manager claimed he remained “optimistic” but confessed that not signing anybody would be “disappointing”.

Liverpool may not have signed anyone in this transfer window, but they have announced three bumper commercial deals. Not the best timing.

Liverpool supporters’ union Spirit of Shankly have written an open letter to both Arsenal and Liverpool senior management calling for fair treatment for matchgoers for the forthcoming FA Cup fifth round tie at the Emirates Stadium.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Wednesday, January 30, 2013: Liverpool supporters protest against high ticket prices during the Premiership match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. 'Football Without Fans Is Nothing' (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The two sides were drawn against each other in the competition after the Gunners saw off Coventry City and Liverpool beat Bournemouth in the fourth round over the weekend.

The letter , written by Chair Jay McKenna, points out to Ian Ayre and Phil Dutton of Liverpool, and Ivan Gazidis Ivan Worsell of Arsenal:

The league game saw Liverpool fans charged £62 per ticket for a fixture played on a Saturday evening. The cost of the match along with the late kick off saw many fans priced out and for those who went there were many difficulties using public transport to get home. We have been informed by Arsenal supporters that if we receive a 9,000 ticket allocation at Category A prices, this would mean that ticket prices could range from £62 to £93 for Liverpool Supporters.

Spirit of Shankly are requesting an earlier kick-off time than the 5.30pm league game between the sides in North London back in November.

They also urge the clubs to consider the ticket prices for away fans, citing Coventry City’s £25.50 price for their fourth round tie at Arsenal on Friday night.

And finally, they ask the clubs to ensure Arsenal grant away fans with a 15% allocation, as stated in the Football Association’s rules on FA Cup matchdays.

However, the BBC report on Monday:

[sic] An Arsenal spokesperson told BBC Sport the FA Cup fifth round clash between the two sides would almost certainly be classed as a Category A or B match, with a lowest potential ticket price of £35.

Spirit of Shankly are currently calling for fans to complete a survey on ticket prices, to use as evidence in campaiging for fair ticket prices. You can complete this survey here .

Liverpool have been dealt a blow with the news that Mamadou Sakho won’t be fit to face Everton on Tuesday and faces another two to three weeks out.

SWANSEA, WALES - Monday, September 16, 2013: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho in action against Swansea City during the Premiership match at the Liberty Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Speaking at his pre-Everton press conference, manager Brendan Rodgers was asked about the Frenchman’s fitness and revealed the news.

Sakho picked up a hamstring injury in the defeat at Chelsea over Christmas.

In Sakho, and Daniel Agger‘s, absence, Liverpool have been forced to pair Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel at the back. Toure moving from his usual right sided position to the left. They’ve leaked eight goals in their three Premier League games they’ve started together (at Hull, at Stoke and home to Aston Villa)

Meanwhile, midfielder Joe Allen is back in training but may not be risked for the Merseyside derby.

“What we don’t want to do is risk another injury. We have to think not only for tomorrow night” explained Rodgers.

“He’s still got a bit of time to decide that. It’s a case of assessing Joe on whether or not this game will push him too much.”
