Mohamed Salah could still yet become a Liverpool player this week after Jose Mourinho confirmed Brendan Rodgers‘ comments that nothing has been finalised yet.
Reports on Thursday suggested that Salah was on the brink of a move to Stamford Bridge after the Blues had a bid accepted by the Egyptian winger’s club, Basel.
Chelsea even went as far as issuing a statement on their official website declaring they had agreed to sign Salah, subject to a medical and international clearance.
However, in an interview with talkSPORT on Friday morning, Rodgers was quizzed about missing out on signing Salah, to which he hinted that the race to sign the 21-year-old was not over yet.
He told presenter Alan Brazil and former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay, “To be fair, the club’s been working hard on a number of targets. Mohamed Salah’s a good player, we were tracking him for a while.
“Salah to Chelsea isn’t completed yet though, but if the deal can’t be done, it can’t be done.”
On Friday afternoon, at his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie at home to Stoke City on Sunday, Mourinho also revealed the deal wasn’t a foregone conclusion.
The Portuguese manager also admitted that the Blues had not inquired about Salah until it became apparent they were to sell Juan Mata to Manchester Utd — a deal that should be completed imminently.
“Maybe he’s [Rodgers] right, I don’t know what Liverpool bid before us. All I know is we went direct to Basel, they said yes, so we reached an agreement,’ Mourinho is quoted by Metro as saying.
“It was a surprise for us that Juan [Mata] was leaving, we were not prepared to make a bid or to try to bring a player to replace Juan in the squad, so everything happened very fast. We had to work on that and see which options could be good options for us and finally we decided to try for Salah.
“We started from zero because we had no contact with the club [Basel] or the player.
“The first step was an agreement with the club so that situation is done, everything is signed and done, subject to the medical which we haven’t had yet and subject to the player’s desire to join us or not.
“Now we know he’s very happy to come, but we have to finalise or not.
“He cannot come to England for his medical so we have to meet him, probably in Switzerland, so only after that can we bring him to the country.”

Former Liverpool player John Barnes believes that Luis Suarez has the makings to go down in history as a club legend but is not there yet.
Suarez joined the club in 2011 and has since gone on to score an impressive 73 goals in 155 games for Liverpool.
But Barnes likened the striker to ex-Liverpool player Fernando Torres, whom he thought could go on to achieve legendary status but instead left the club too soon.
"He is a fantastic player and we would like to see him stay there for a long period of time," Barnes told Sky Sports.
"When we talk about legendary status he has the ability to do it but then Torres showed it for the first two years and he's not there anymore.
"You have to be there for a particular amount of time to be considered a legend for any club, but I would love to see him stay and do it."
Barnes, who had a 10-year span at the club, says the most impressive aspect about Liverpool this season has been their consistency with or without the presence of Suarez.
And he admitted that he would be disappointed if the Reds failed to finish in the top four this season.
"More pleasing for me is that even when he has not played the team still looks competent, Barnes said.
"We are not just relying on him, we are playing in a way that suits the players which means that they can play consistently well and create chances.
"Jordan Henderson for me has been a revelation so the future looks good for Liverpool.
"But I would be despondent if all of a sudden they did not finish in the top four."

After looking at potential left-backs and right-backs for Liverpool, Scott Taylor continues his scouting series for This Is Anfield by looking at right-sided centre-backs.
Another position that could be of good use for Liverpool to improve is the right centre-back position. This is because many Liverpool fans disapprove of the limited Martin Skrtel, and Kolo Toure isn’t getting any younger.
So, yesterday I asked fellow Liverpool fans who they would like to sign and this article will be about the top three right centre-backs.
Obvious transfer targets for Liverpool such as Kurt Zouma will not be included, as this article looks at centre-backs you, the readers would want us to sign in this month’s transfer window and not who the club wants to sign.
Mehdi Benatia
The first target for the right centre-back position is 26-year-old centre-back Mehdi Benatia, who currently plays for Serie ‘A’ side AS Roma.
Unlike all the other possible targets, Benatia brings experience which will be very important if Liverpool are to continue to challenge for a top four spot in the Premier League.
Benatia struggled in his early years of his career, having failed to make an appearance for Marseille in his time at the club between 2005 and 2008.
After spending a couple more seasons earning his trade in the 2nd tier of French football, Benatia was given a life-line when he signed for Serie A side Udinese in 2010 for an undisclosed fee.
Italy was where he began to show his real potential. In his 72 games for Udinese between 2010 and 2013, the Moroccan scored five goals in 72 games, a goal nearly every 15 games.
During his time with the Bianconeri, Benatia played regularly for his national side Morocco alongside Oussama Assaidi and has since scored one goal in 31 appearances for the African side.
In the summer of 2013, Benatia moved to AS Roma, and since August, Benatia has scored five goals in just 18 games for the Giallorossi, a goal every 3.6 games, which is extremely impressive for a central defender.
However, Benatia is valued at £16m, but if the Reds want to bring the Moroccan to Anfield, then they may have to pay an excess of £20m for him, owing to the amount of time left on his contract with Roma.
In addition, Benatia will miss an important part of every premier league season due to the Africa Cup of Nations and will be a big loss for any side.
Steven Caulker
English centre-back Steven Caulker is an under-rated centre half that many Liverpool fans would love the club to sign.
Caulker is four years younger than Benatia, but arguably carries as much experience as the Moroccan.
Caulker spent a tough four years at Tottenham before joining newly promoted Premier League side Cardiff City in the summer of 2013.
In a frustrating Spurs career, the Englishman made 18 appearances for the club, scoring just twice. It is significant to add that the large majority of his 18 games came at the end of his time at White Hart Lane, just as he was starting to show his talent.
Caulker is very experienced in both the Football League and the Premier League.
During his time with Spurs, the 22-year-old was loaned out to three different teams consisting of Yeovil Town, Bristol City and Swansea — significant as they were managed by Brendan Rodgers.
Caulker made 120 appearances at his loan sides, scoring just twice. Despite having such an average scoring record for a central defender, Caulker scores in ‘big’ games.
For instance, his first goal for his new side Cardiff was the winner against Swansea in the first ever South Wales derby in the Premier League.
If he were to move to Liverpool, he would improve the Reds’ defence as well as improving his chances of an international career, as he looks to fully break into the England side.
Caulker joined Cardiff for approximately £8m in the summer of 2013 and will cost the Reds around £10m if they are to sign this talented defender this month.
Benedikt Höwedes
Schalke centre-back Bendikt Höwedes is the most experienced of the three targets, despite being only 25 years old, he as he has played in the Champions League as well as entering his 7th year in the Bundesliga.
Höwedes is the captain of Schalke and has been a key member for his side overall making 242 appearances scoring 17 goals, a good record considering the position he plays.
He has international experience playing in a very good Germany side alongside players such as Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. He has come through all levels of national football from Under-18 level to the first team.
Since earning his first cap for Germany, Höwedes has played 18 times, scoring just the once in a 3-1 home defeat to Argentina in August 2012.
His age is also a significant attribute because he possesses a wealth of experience, but still has the room to improve.
His towering height will also help the Reds’ defensive problems. Liverpool are known to be poor at defending set-pieces and being 6″6′ would help reduce costly errors and make Liverpool’s defence as formidable as their attack.
Another positive about Höwedes is his versatility — he can play at centre-back as well as on both flanks, which will be key when rotating the squad in busy periods.
There are a few problems, however, about Höwedes. Firstly, his estimated value is £16m, but if they are to land him, Liverpool may again, like Benatia, have to go above the £20m mark.
Secondly, Höwedes has been at Schalke since 2001 and is currently a one-club man like Steven Gerrard so I can’t see him moving anytime soon, especially now as he has extended his contract until 2017.
In Conclusion
The right sided centre-back I would buy would be Caulker. He is a fantastic prospect who is in and around the national side, so a move would suit both parties.
Also, he was on loan at Swansea when Rodgers was in charge, so the manager will know a lot about Caulker and can improve him as a player by sorting out his weaknesses.
Do you agree with the targets? Who would you like to buy from that list and for how much? If you have an answer to any of these questions than be sure to leave your comments below or tweet me (@ScottTaylorUK).

Liverpool are hoping to agree a deal with Spartak Moscow midfielder Romulo, according to Metro.
Romelu is predominantly a defensive midfielder — just the position Liverpool need to strengthen right now due to Lucas Leiva’s latest injury setback.
Jamie Sanderson writes on the Metro’s website:
According to reports in Russia, Liverpool have approached Spartak and asked them to name a price for the Brazilian defensive midfielder, who has eight caps for his country.
Sanderson believes Liverpool could be set to offer around £7 million for Romulo’s services, having missed out on Egyptian international winger Mohamed Salah to Chelsea on Thursday.
Romulo has won eight caps for Brazil, having moved to Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2012.
However, the 23-year-old has missed the best part of the last 18 months of football due to a serious knee injury.
During his press conference at Melwood ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup 4th Round tie at Bournemouth, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers spoke briefly of his transfer plans for the window.
He said he didn’t expect to sign any more defenders, but confirmed the club were tracking several targets.
He told reporters, “We don’t need to bring any more defenders in. We just need to get some of our players back fit.
“We’re missing key players, but we’ve got to manage with what we’ve got. If we can bring anyone in, great, if not, we have what we have.
“We’ve looked at a number of players, but Salah is a talented player, but we’ll see what the window brings. We’re looking at several targets.”
Liverpool go to Bournemouth this weekend with several injury problems looming after a week of illness in the Reds camp.
However, they do welcome back Jon Flanagan, who has been missing since before Christmas with a hamstring injury.
Flanagan will likely replace Glen Johnson, who has been ruled out of action for some time. Rodgers explained, “Johnson is sidelined indefinitely. Apart from that, young Flanagan is back and has been training really well.
“Glen’s got a really bad ankle, and one or two other issues which haven’t allowed him to be 100% this season.
“We’ve got no timeline on Johnson’s injury.”

As Liverpool prepare to visit Bournemouth in the FA Cup this Saturday, Jack Lusby (@LusbyLatest ) chooses the five players who he feels would benefit from a rare start.
Heading into Saturday’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Bournemouth, Brendan Rodgers will be looking to give his squad a confidence boost after a difficult time at home to Aston Villa.
The Dorset club are currently sitting 16th in the Championship table, seven points from the relegation zone. They also boast the second worst defence in the league, shipping 45 goals in 26 league games so far.
Whilst Eddie Howe is doing a commendable job at his boyhood club given the resources, Rodgers and Liverpool should be looking at this game as a very winnable contest.
This should allow the Ulsterman licence to experiment with his line up, and possibly provide some peripheral figures with precious game time.
Jordon Ibe
Liverpool’s brightest young talent; after a recent return from injury Ibe has continued to impress for Alex Inglethorpe’s U21s side.
In particular, the Englishman recently impressed in the U21s 2-3 loss at home to Bolton’s U21s. Ibe displayed his agility and dexterity well, skipping through the Bolton defence to win a penalty before converting the resulting spot kick with assured ease.
(Highlights, Liverpool U21s 2 – 3 Bolton U21s, 9th December 2013)
Liverpool’s number 33 featured on the bench in the 5-3 win against Stoke earlier this month. This suggests that Ibe is very much in Rodgers’ plans for the future.
The Liverpool manager has suggested that Ibe would be going out on loan in the near future, but as the Liverpool Echo reported recently, he is similarly content with the winger in his squad:
“At some point we will have to get him regular game time in order for him to push on. At this moment in time, he’s on the bench and has got possibilities to play.”
Perhaps a start against Bournemouth will give Ibe the chance to stake a claim for a more regular role at Anfield in the near future?
On-loan Nigerian winger Moses has been heavily censured of late by Liverpool fans, and with good cause.
Since an impressive debut against Swansea back in September, capped by a superb driven goal, Moses’ performances have dipped significantly.
Still, as reported by the Liverpool Echo, Moses remains a part of Rodgers’ plans:
“I’ve got no doubt that over the course of time here he will show his talent. I still expect him to make a big contribution in the second half of the season.”
Moses’ place remains on the bench, but Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth may provide the Nigerian with the minutes he craves.
But following another disappointing performance against Oldham, should this represent a last chance for Moses: impress, or face a terminated loan?
Martin Kelly
After completing his first appearance for the Liverpool first team in 15 months, the previous round tie against Oldham, Kelly told LiverpoolFC.com of his nerves prior to kick off:
“It was brilliant. I was probably more nervous for this match than any I’ve ever played for Liverpool…It was great to get that behind me, getting up and down the line.”
Kelly’s solid performance in the Anfield game is testament to the determination of a player who has suffered a horrific injury layoff.
The next stage of the right-back’s confidence building should be a start against Bournemouth.
With Glen Johnson currently underperforming, the reintroduction of Kelly on the right side of defence may provide worthy competition for the England international.
Could an impressive performance against Bournemouth lead to a regular place for Kelly in Rodgers’ starting line up?
Brad Smith
Another frail position for Liverpool of late is on the opposite side of defence: the problematic left-back spot.
With Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan currently out injured, lacklustre French loanee Aly Cissokho has been deployed by Rodgers as the only fit senior left-back available.
This should provide youngster Brad Smith an opportunity to impress against Bournemouth.
Another victim of long-term injury, Australian-born Smith has worked hard to return to the U21s fold, and his eye-catching performances led to a call-up to the senior squad earlier this season.
Unfortunately, Smith’s debut came at an unflattering juncture, deployed on the left wing as Chelsea closed out a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge in December.
As with Kelly, the supposedly lesser opposition should prove to be another confidence building exercise for Smith.
A balance of defensive solidity and attacking pace, can Brad Smith prove himself a true Rodgers-style full-back?
Finally, Luis Alberto represents something of an anomaly in Brendan Rodgers’ squad.
Having shown sparks of a natural brilliance in his fleeting appearances in a Liverpool shirt, the 21-year-old Spaniard has yet to impose himself fully on the games provided.
Linking up well with Iago Aspas in the 2-0 win against Oldham in the previous round, Alberto has proven that he has at least a measure of the ability that prompted Rodgers to spend a considerable portion of his transfer budget on him.
However, the ex-Sevilla man needs a stand-out performance or two before he can begin to justify a continued selection.
Bournemouth should provide Alberto that platform.
As playmaker Coutinho looks increasingly in need of a break, Alberto could offer Rodgers another option in the advanced midfield position in lieu of the Brazilian.
With the jury still out, can Alberto prove his worth to the Liverpool first team with a performance at the Goldsands Stadium?
Do you agree with this selection? Who deserves a start against Bournemouth on Saturday, and why?

Brendan Rodgers addressed a room of journalists at Melwood on Thursday ahead of this Saturday’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Bournemouth.
On an injury to Glen Johnson…
Glen Johnson is sidelined indefinitely. Apart from that, young Jon Flanagan is back and has been training really well.
Glen’s got a really bad ankle, and one or two other issues which haven’t allowed him to be 100% this season.
We’ve got no timeline on Johnson’s injury.
On expected team selection vs Bournemouth…
We’ve only got 15 players training at the moment, so there’s not a lot of choice with the line-up this weekend.
We’ll name a strong line-up against Bournemouth. Although the Premier League is the priority, Liverpool is a club built on winning trophies and we want to win the FA Cup.
We’ll call up some of our young players to cover for the amount of injuries/illness we’ve got out.
We’ll also play with lots of our experienced players, alongside the youngsters. We want to maintain our commitment and work.
On Sebastian Coates…
Sebastian Coates’ loan move is part of him getting fit and back into games.
On Lucas Leiva’s injury…
I’m disappointed for Lucas. He’s been very important for our squad this season. It’s put him out for a few months.
Hopefully he’ll be back sooner rather than later. But in the mean time, it leaves us short of a really good player.
Lucas has still got a great chance of being in the Brazil squad for the World Cup in the summer. That’s up to Scolari.
On the desire to create a consistent defence…
There hasn’t been anything systematic in defence. We’ve made individual errors, and part of that is the changes and lack of balance.
It’s important to have stability in the team for tactical discipline. We have players with a strong mentality, and we want to be defensively strong, as well as good in attack.
On Simon Mignolet’s recent lack of form…
Simon Mignolet has great responsibility and every keeper will make mistakes. The problem is it gets highlighted even more.
Mignolet is first class mentality and he’s going to improve. All in all, we’ve been really happy with Simon.
I’ve reinforced to Mignolet the reasons why we brought him in. They’ll have success if they work hard, and need confidence.
Mignolet is still a very very good goalkeeper, and one of the top keepers at this level. He’s saved us a lot of points this season.
On the tough game away to Bournemouth…
Whatever your motivation for a big game against someone like Chelsea or Manchester United, you have to go five times more for a game such as Bournemouth away.
Eddie [Howe] is a great, young manager. They play 4-3-3 and it’ll be a tough game for us. We have to be mentally prepared to up tempo.
Bournemouth want to show they can play at Liverpool’s level, especially away from home. This will be a difficult game.
On how Aly Cissokho has done this season…
Aly Cissokho came in here as a cover player, to support Enrique. Unfortunately Jose is still a few weeks away from training.
Aly has done his best and performed to the best of his capabilities. But it’s never easy – different football, culture, environment.
On injuries and signing reinformacements this Janaury…
We don’t need to bring any more defenders in. We just need to get some of our players back fit.
We’re missing key players, but we’ve got to manage with what we’ve got. If we can bring anyone in, great, if not, we have what we have.
We’ve looked at a number of players, but Salah is a talented player, but we’ll see what the window brings. We’re looking at several targets.
On his tactics against Aston Villa last Saturday…
I picked a too aggressively offensive team from the start and we struggled. When I put an extra body in midfield, we looked better.
Rodgers added that Brad Jones will start in goal for Liverpool at Bournemouth, if fit.
Bournemouth vs Liverpool gets underway at 12.45pm on Saturday, 25th January 2014 and is live on ITV 1.

Liverpool have lost the race to sign Basel winger Mohamed Salah, being outbid by Chelsea at the last hurdle, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Reports on Wednesday suggested Salah was due on Merseyside before the end of the week to seal a £10 million switch to Liverpool, but a bid on Wednesday night from Chelsea has scuppered that deal.
Jose Mourinho is looking to bring Salah in as a direct replacement for Juan Mata, who is set to join Manchester United in a £37 million deal later today.
James Pearce of the Echo writes on Thursday afternoon:
Liverpool value the player at around the £8million mark but Basel have upped their asking price for Salah to around £16million.
It would appear that the Reds are unwilling to match the fee Chelsea say they are prepared to pay for the 21-year-old Egyptian international’s services.
With just over a week of the January transfer window remaining, this news will come as a major blow to Brendan Rodgers, who had hoped to bolster his attacking options with Salah’s talents.
The Reds may also be looking at full-back and central defensive midfield targets before the window closes on Friday, 31st January.
It certainly seems it could be an exciting last week of transfer speculation and activity, with time running out for Liverpool and their Premier League rivals to sign the right players to carry them up the league.
What are your feelings on possibly missing out on signing Salah? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or on Twitter @thisisanfield .
