Pemain Crystal Palace, Martin Kelly :

"Saya bertuah kerana dapat banyak pengalaman semasa di Liverpool dan belajar banyak perkara. Gol saya di Stamford Bridge dalam saingan Piala Liga di mana pada tahun itu juga kami menjuarai piala itu merupakan kenangan indah bagi saya. Saya masih lagi berhubung dengan Henderson, Lucas dan Flanagan. Saya juga ada bercakap dengan Brendan beberapa minggu lalu. Dia (Brendan) juga ada menghantar mesej kepada saya."

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen insists his side have the belief to end a run of three successive defeats and secure progress into the Champions League knockout stage.

Having lost to Basel, their main rivals for a runners-up spot in Group B, in Switzerland the Reds then suffered back-to-back defeats against Real Madrid.

In reality those matches against the defending champions were never likely to decide Liverpool's destiny so it now comes down to their final two games – which is what was expected when the draw was made.

They head to Bulgaria to face Ludogorets – whom they scraped past at Anfield thanks to a Steven Gerrard penalty in stoppage time – next week knowing they require at least a point, while a victory would put them back in the driving seat if Madrid beat Basle in the Bernabeu on the same night.

"Before the group was under way that would have been our aim any way," said Allen.

"We understand there are no easy games in the Champions League but we have to have the belief we can get those points and I think we have the ability to do that.

"There were a lot of young players out there (in the 1-0 defeat to Real in Madrid) and they gained massive experience from a game like that.

"Taking it into the next two games in the group we will take a lot of self-belief and we are confident we can get six points from them."

If they are to have any chance of success Liverpool have to end their barren run in front of goal, which has not been helped by Daniel Sturridge's new thigh injury which has ruled him out until the new year.

The Reds have not scored in the competition since they beat Ludogorets 2-1 at Anfield on September 16.

They last failed to score in four consecutive European matches in the 2005-06 Champions League campaign, which ended at the first knockout round after defeat to Benfica.

Brendan Rodgers' side have just three points from four matches and there are just six teams in the history of the competition who have still managed to progress from a similar or worse position.

In 2001-02 Liverpool found themselves in an identical situation in the second group stage with three points after four matches but managed to qualify as group runners-up with seven points.

Xabi Alonso: Happy with his career path

Xabi Alonso: Happy with his career path

Xabi Alonso claims no Premier League offers were put to him before leaving Real Madrid for Bayern Munich.

It came as something of a surprise over the summer when the 32-year-old World Cup winner was allowed to leave Santiago Bernabeu.

Bayern were able to tempt Real into a sale, though, with the talented midfielder jumping at the chance to pen a two-year contract with the Bundesliga champions.

Alonso claims that was the only option put to him, with there no approaches from England for a man who spent five years with Liverpool between 2004 and 2009 – helping them to Champions League glory during his first season at Anfield.

He told the Daily Mail: “No. I only had this option.

“There were times I heard some English clubs said ‘what would he think’, but my idea was to stay in Madrid.

“Then when I heard of Munich’s interest I said, ‘Xabi, think what you want and where you will be happy’.

“I needed a fresh start somewhere. This might be my last experience in football.

“I came from my hometown team, Real Sociedad, to the best team in England, to the best team in Spain, to the best team in Germany. It is a beautiful career.

“I wanted a nice football script.”

The final six weeks of 2014 could prove a huge period Liverpool’s season, starting with Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace — and an optimistic Craig Rimmer explains how the Reds could come out of the other side for the better.

At Selhurst Park on Sunday Liverpool face the first of 11 fixtures in the next six weeks which will ultimately determine what their 2014/15 season looks like. It’s a schedule as vital as it is chaotic, and one which will define the limits of Liverpool’s ambitions in the second half of the season.

A potentially tame run of fixtures against Crystal Palace, Stoke City, Leicester City and Sunderland is complicated by two must-win Champions League games away to Ludogorets and at home to Basel.

That precedes league games against Manchester United and Arsenal, either side of a Capital One Cup quarter-final, and then the hectic Christmas and New Year period.

It’s a period of the season which demands negotiation and management. Damage must be limited and points put on the board.

News of Daniel Sturridge’s latest spell on the sidelines just made that task a harder one. Goals are a big concern, but after the last summer transfer window Liverpool should be in a better position and in possession of a squad to cope with such demands.

There are enough good players in the squad now; perhaps it’s time for some of those said players to stand up and prove it.

Everything is still to play for. Despite a turgid start to the season, the realistic objectives set back in August remain within reach — due in part to the failings and inconsistencies of others.

Liverpool could conceivably head into 2015 in a much happier place — how does 15-20 additional points and Champions League progress sound?

For a change, the recent international break came at a nice time for Liverpool. Following three successive defeats, it was an obvious point at which to stop, regroup and start afresh.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 8, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia is substituted by manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premier League match against Chelsea at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There were small shoots of progress against both Real Madrid and Chelsea — little consolation when both games ended in defeat. Although, for that to be anything more than consequential, Liverpool need to put together a run of good form and, more significantly, a run of winning form.

To date the season has lacked direction; any signs of progress, both individually and collectively, have been swiftly undermined. The weight of the fixture list hasn’t helped a labouring team; the increasing regularity of games acting to magnify deficiencies.

What Liverpool’s season needs is a purpose and a source of momentum. In such a busy period momentum is actually not too hard to find. Win a couple of games and the prognosis suddenly looks far rosier.

Equally, a couple more defeats and the kind of pessimism and scepticism which has threatened to confine last season to a distant memory would be cranked up a notch or two, and Liverpool’s season could just as easily get away from them.

It’s a situation which demands pragmatism; the kind of pragmatism which Rodgers was such a great exponent of during the previous season. In fact Liverpool would be well-guided to get back to doing much more of what they did well last season.

But winning football matches breeds momentum and momentum can in turn breed form. It was that kind of perfect storm which spurred Liverpool on to an epic title challenge last season and, although it is obviously short-sighted to expect anything like as memorable this time around, success over the next six weeks can still prove the catalyst for Liverpool to achieve their basic goals of Champions League qualification, Champions League progression, and perhaps even a cup semi-final to boot.

This season remains uncertain and difficult to define. It’s fair to surmise that we will likely be left in little doubt as to it’s direction come the new year. If Liverpool are to take ownership of their season and give it the kind of definition we all want, then they must start winning games. What better time of place to start than here and now.

Six weeks to define Liverpool’s season

Raheem Sterling is ready to commit his long-term future to Liverpool.

The 19-year-old, whose existing Anfield contract runs to 2017, has reportedly attracted the interest of European champions Real Madrid, but believes he can realise all his dreams on Merseyside.

Quoted in several national newspapers, he said: "I am happy to be here for as long as possible. Hopefully I can achieve the goals I want to achieve here at Liverpool in years to come.

"I am just happy to play football at this club for many years to come. The club has spoken to my representatives and hopefully something can be done soon."

Reports last year suggested Sterling was on the verge of signing a new five-year deal at Anfield, thought to be worth upwards of £100,000 per week.

The England attacker says his rapid progression has been down to hard work and maturing.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 19, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the third winning goal against Queens Park Rangers during the Premier League match at Loftus Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Reflecting on the last two years, Sterling is quoted on the club’s official website this week, “If I could see myself two years ago I would just say listen to the advice the people around you – particularly the manager – are giving you. Stay focused on playing football only and lead a professional lifestyle from the word go.

“Try to get better every day, not just in playing, but in everything. That was probably my slight weakness in that I was not leading the lifestyle I should have been off the pitch – not resting when I should have been, stuff like that.

“That is something I have brought in with maturity, having that rest period I should have.

“I wasn’t in the team at the start of last season but I knew I could develop and really turn things around. That was my big moment – being on the bench. That time out really helped me.”

Sterling has scored 15 goals in 93 appearances for the Reds, winning 13 England caps along the way.

Liverpool attacker Raheem Sterling has opened up about the pressure he was under when he asked to sit out of an England international due to tiredness earlier this season.

Sterling found himself in the spotlight off the pitch recently after England boss Roy Hodgson revealed the player had told him he was tired ahead of the final training session in the build-up to last month's Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia in Tallinn.

That led to accusations the teenager had said he did not want to play, but Sterling insists nothing could be further from the truth – and says he has learned from the experience.

"It was pretty difficult," he said. "I tried to not really watch TV much or listen to things.

"If I saw a conversation about me on TV, I would just turn over. It was the first time I'd had to deal with anything like that. It was different but I felt I dealt with it really well. I didn't read too much into it.

"The main thing I've learned is to just shut off. I was always on my phone and Instagram – things would pop up and you could not go past it without having a look. But now I've learned to block it all out and not read what is said.

"I just love playing football for club or country. If anything I said got taken the wrong way, I'm sorry about that, but I am always happy to play football."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers discussed the latest Daniel Sturridge injury at his pre match press conference ahead of The Reds’ trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace this weekend.

The England international will not play again until 2015 after a new thigh strain this week ruled him out for six weeks.

It is the ninth separate but similar injury the 25-year-old has had in his career. He recently suggested his problems could be hereditary as his father, a trainee at Birmingham, and two uncles Dean and Simon – both professional footballers – also suffered the same problems.

Rodgers admits the club will now use the next couple of months to explore every avenue in an attempt to find a solution to the problem but the manager absolved the player of any blame.

“It is extremely unfair. He has just been extremely unfortunate,” said the Reds boss.

“The last time he played was August (31) and he is a player who does not want to be out for this length of time. There is no-one more frustrated than him at this present time. I spoke to him today and he was as down as I have seen anyone in terms of not being able to help the team.

“I think now is the time for him and us to go away to see what more we can do to get him onto the pitch consistently. He is world-class talent but he can only fulfil that if he is playing games – but there is no-one who wants that more than Daniel; he wants to be working and playing.

“We need to look to find the answers to allow him over a consistent period of time to perform here at Liverpool. Daniel has had up to nine injuries on that same thigh over a period time, not just over the last six or seven months.

“We have to look across his time as a young player and see where we can find ways to get him out there playing.”

While the club’s medical staff will look deeply into the problem it is likely Liverpool will also explore external specialist advice to get to the root of the cause.

“There are many different ways of dealing with players. I am very proud of my medical and sports science team here – we have shown our ability to get players on to the field is second to none,” added Rodgers.

“Unfortunately for the likes of Daniel over a number of years he has been unable to have that fitness that is going to allow him to play a consecutive number of games.

“There are maybe cases due to a player’s make-up genetically where it can be difficult.

“Hopefully in this adverse moment we can find a way that allows a programme over a period of time that allows him to play and train.

“With him being out we need to refocus on the players who are fit and available. We can’t cry about it, we just need to work really hard as a team with the players who are fit and look to get results.”

Brendan Rodgers has dismissed speculation he could recall Belgium international Divock Origi from his season-long loan spell at Lille as that was a prerequisite of the £10million deal they struck with the French club in the summer.

For that to change the Ligue 1 side would have to concede to a new agreement, with Liverpool having to pay considerable compensation, and they have shown no appetite to entertain such an option.

“I don’t think there is any (chance). It was never the case,” said the Reds boss. “When he was signed – and there was no discussion – it was one where he had to stay at Lille.

“I’ve seen reports saying he may come back early but that was never the case – one of the reasons we were able to sign the player was that he stayed there all season.

“As far as I am concerned that is still the case.”

That means there is extra pressure on Mario Balotelli, who will be assessed over the next 48 hours to see whether he has fully recovered from the hamstring injury which forced him to leave international duty with Italy early.

Balotelli is yet to score a Premier League goal since his £16million move from AC Milan. However, the misfiring Italian may at last be close to getting the extra support he needs up front after Rodgers confirmed fellow summer signing Rickie Lambert was due for more action in the coming weeks.

“A lot of the focus this season has been on players who are injured and a player who is no longer here (Luis Suarez),” he said.

“I need to ensure my time is devoted to the players who are fit and available.

“Rickie will get an opportunity now – we have so many games in an exciting period and he will feature in those heavily.”

Mile Jedinak: Returns from suspension

Mile Jedinak: Returns from suspension

Team news ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Liverpool at Selhurst Park (kick-off: 1:30pm).

Crystal Palace will be bolstered by the return of captain Mile Jedinak.

The Australia international missed his team's 1-0 defeat at Manchester United last time out through suspension. Jedinak's availability is a boost for Palace's midfield line with Scotland international James McArthur doubtful with a calf problem.

McArthur, who was injured during the match at Old Trafford prior to the international break, took part in a light training session on Thursday and could feature. Kevin Doyle has recovered from a groin injury that saw him pull out of the Republic of Ireland's international friendly against the United States and the striker will be on the bench on Sunday.

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli's hamstring problem, sustained on international duty with Italy, will be assessed.

With fellow forward Daniel Sturridge ruled out until 2015 with a new thigh injury, manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested summer signing Rickie Lambert will have a greater part to play.

Midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to be involved after being rested by England against Scotland in midweek as a precaution.
