Brendan Rogers’ press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park saw him answer questions on Daniel Sturridge‘s injury woes, Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace and Divock Origi‘s potential arrival in January.

Here are the quotes from the boss on Sturridge, Palace and More

On Daniel Sturridge’s injury:

“Daniel has just been extremely unfortunate. He’s a player who doesn’t want to be out for this period of time with the quality he has.

“I spoke to Daniel at length and he’s as down as I’ve seen anyone. We need to go away and find answers so he can perform consistently.

“He looked very, very good in training, but one strike of the ball caused the issue. It was a slight tear of the same thigh he’s had problems with before. It’s unfortunate for both Daniel and us.”

On Divock Origi’s possible return from Lille in January:

“(Divock) Origi was a young player we signed last summer, and we had an agreement he had to stay at Lille until the summer.

“That was one of the main reasons we were able to sign him. As far as I’m concerned that’s still the case with him.”

On the struggling strikers at the club:

“I have great trust in them. I would be more concerned if they were moping around or didn’t care.

“They (Lambert and Borini) are working tirelessly despite not getting much playing time. Rickie is a player with great qualities who can give us something different.”

On last season’s 3-3 draw at Palace, and Sunday’s game:

“That wasn’t the game that cost us. The damage was always done in the Chelsea game. That was the one that changed it for us. But on reflection I was extremely proud.

“Maybe the excitement to claw back the goal difference on Manchester City overtook us.

“It will be equally as tough against Palace this season. Neil Warnock is a wonderful manager with big experience. We will look to start off an exciting run of games with a win.”

On Jordan Henderson and Mario Balotelli‘s fitness:

“I expect Jordan to be fit for Sunday’s game. He is fine. Mario will be assessed before the match.”

Crystal Palace v Liverpool is a 1.30pm (UK) kick-off and is live on Sky Sports 1.

There’s been much discussion surrounding Liverpool’s summer signings during this past fortnight. Rather than looking at the obvious negatives, we take a look at who has impressed.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 31, 2014: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

We asked the This Is Anfield writers for their opinions on who they think has been Liverpool’s best summer signing, so far.

ALBERTO MORENO – A quality, attacking full-back can make a team a whole lot more dangerous, and ever since John Glenson replaced Glen Johnson, we’ve been bereft of one.

Moreno’s attitude seems to match his exciting potential, so be thankful we finally look to have solved our left-back issues. A star in the making. Adam Griffies

EMRE CAN The German powerhouse oozes versatility. After some promises showings in midfield, Can appears to carry a vast amount of potential and could certainly be one of the players that Rodgers can mold into something special. It’s easy to forget the former Bayern man is only 20 years old, and with hard work he could become a permanent fixture in the Liverpool XI for years to come. –Danny Gallagher

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Javier Manquillo in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

JAVIER MANQUILLO - although that says more about the performances put in by his fellow new arrivals than about his own. The young right back has provided much needed competition for Glen Johnson and, although it has not induced Johnson to perform better, it has allowed Rodgers to drop the number 2 when he’s off-form, which was a luxury not available to him previously. Manquillo has shown enough so far to suggest that he deserves a permanent transfer when his two-year loan comes to an end, but hopefully his more illustrious and expensive fellow signings will step up to the plate soon and replace him as the Reds’ best summer signing. Oliver Smith

MORENO - He’s been outstanding, great in possession and attacking. Although he’s made 1-2 errors he doesn’t dwell on them and defensively he is sound, especially considering what’s going on to the right of him. Jim Fishlock

CAN - With just 252 minutes of league football handed to him so far, it’s perhaps a bit premature to label him the best summer signing based on his initial performances, and it could be argued that the 20-year-old is not actually one of Rodgers’ own buys. But every time I see him play he shows that ruthless efficiency so typical of a German international – he’ll become a big player for us. –Jamie Casey

MORENO has shown glimpse of what he can do especially away to spurs but must improve defensively. I wouldn’t rule out Markovic yet either, but he has to get to pace with the epl and start working harder. I think Madger Antonio Gomes Aju could turn into a good player too once he gets his clearance but is a couple of years away from the first team. PJ Vaughan

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

EMRE CAN - Although none of the signings have yet been deemed ‘successful’, so far Can has shown the most promise. Quick, powerful, and direct, the young German looks tailor-made for Premier league football. He could be a Michael Ballack in waiting! Simon Collings

It’s got to be CAN, surely? There’s no disputes about this transfer from all aspects. His price represents value for money; he already looks arguably the club’s best midfield talent; he has future growth prospects that surpass anyone in the middle of the park; he has dominance in physicality, and pressing prowess mixed with great technical skills and a vicious shooting boot; his versatility means he already shows promise as a replacement for Gerrard as the deepest lying midfielder, or as a box-to-box player (his ideal position). It’s only a matter of time before we start having difficult debates as a fan base of how a midfield of Can and Coutinho stacks against Can and Henderson. I know which one I’m voting for. Marco Lopes

I said MORENO in the summer and I’m going to stick to my guns. He’s made the odd error so far into his Liverpool career, but he’s shown enough to convince me that he will blossom into a top quality leftback. Tom McMahon

CAN – Already looking a great prospect in the few games he’s played in a Red shirt. Got the passion (as his goal celebration against Chelsea proved), determination & physicality we’ve arguably lacked in midfield since Mascherano. Natalie Cork

EMRE CAN - He has all the attributes to be one of the best German players in the Premier League. He is strong, quick on the ball, and anyone who has the audacity to run at the Chelsea backline at the moment is a player who represent playing with no fear. I believe he can replace Gerrard over the next couple of years, and can do a job filling in at centre-half. An exciting signing and prospect. – Andy Yates

EMRE CAN pips Adam Lallana to the title of Liverpool’s best summer signing for me. Whilst Lallana has provided flourishes of excitement, it’s Can who looks increasingly more to be settling comfortably into a problem area of the team. He looks strong, intelligent and not afraid to get his hands dirty. He’s could certainly be the type of aggressive box-to-box midfield stalwart Liverpool crave. Furthermore, his ferocious goal against Chelsea, which oozed confidence, shows he can also provide goals, and with that encourage Liverpool to push up as an attacking side once more. Max Munton

Misfiring Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli insists criticism of his performances this season does not affect him and he is putting in more effort than ever before.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks dejected as his side draw 0-0 with Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Italy international has yet to score in the Premier League since his £16million summer move from AC Milan with his two goals coming against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets and Swansea in the Capital One Cup.

There is added pressure on the 24-year-old in the continued absence of Daniel Sturridge, who has not played for his club since August 31 because of injury and was this week ruled out until 2015 by a new thigh problem.

But Balotelli stressed his approval rating outside his inner circle is not something which concerns him.

"I don't need people to believe in me so long as I believe in myself," he told Fox Sports Australia.

"The important people for me are my family and my few close friends."

Criticism of Balotelli has centred not only around his lack of goals but the apparent unwillingness to put in the effort on the pitch.

However, the striker insists he is working harder than ever before and rated his overall performance as 7/10 – a half-point increase on the assessment of himself two years ago.

"I run more than before," he added.

"I've never run like this…so I give a half point more.

"Goals, they will come. It is something that's just not coming at the moment."

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Mario Balotelli against Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sturridge's latest injury, which has prompted a full-scale medical investigation into his recurring problems given he has missed 30 of 82 matches since arriving from Chelsea in January 2013, has dealt a significant setback to Liverpool as they look to get their season back on track after slipping to 11th in the table.

He was expected to return this weekend at Crystal Palace but manager Brendan Rodgers must now find a way of getting goals out of Balotelli, fellow summer signing Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini – who between them have failed to score in 998 minutes in the Premier League this season.

Vice-captain Jordan Henderson admits the players have to help maintain Sturridge's spirits during his lengthy spell out.

"It is a big blow, not only for the team but for him as well," he told ESPN.

"He is devastated, at a really low point really because he was looking forward to getting back playing.

"He felt good so it is disappointing for us as a team and him personally.

"We have to make sure as team-mates we are strong for him because he is doing everything he can in the gym and on the training field to get back as quick as he can.

"Hopefully he has a quick recovery, a speedy recovery and he comes back firing on all cylinders."

There’s been much speculation over Liverpool seeking to bring Divock Origi to Merseyside six months earlier than previously agreed with Lille – Brett Curtis explains why it would be best for both clubs and the player.

LILLE, FRANCE - Thursday, October 23, 2014: Lille OSC's Divock Origi in action against Everton during the UEFA Europa League Group H match at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

With Daniel Sturridge suffering yet another injury setback, which will keep him out until the New Year at least, attention has turned to 19-year-old Divock Origi as the answer to Liverpool’s problems.

The Belgian forward, one of the surprises of the World Cup, signed for the Reds from Lille in July on a five-year contract for a fee in the region of £10 million.

As part of the agreement, however, he was loaned back to the French side for a season to continue his development.

The logic, then, was assumedly that the already-signed Rickie Lambert would fill his space as third-choice forward for a year, with Sturridge and another signing (which turned out to be Mario Balotelli) starting most games.

When forgotten man Fabio Borini refused moves to Sunderland and QPR in order to fight for his place, Liverpool looked more than sufficiently stocked in the striking department.

But, sometimes, depth can be misleading.

A shop can have as much stock as it likes, but if it is not being turned into something tangible, then it becomes worthless, at least in the short-term.

That is the issue Liverpool have discovered this season.

Sturridge hasn’t played since August – yet he still has more Premier League goals this season than Balotelli, Lambert and Borini combined.

That is cheeky, of course: even I’ve scored as many as the trio, and so have you. Origi, too. But it is also undeniably telling.

With 14 league goals, Liverpool have scored only as many as Sunday’s opponents, Crystal Palace, a side they scored over three times more than last season.

The main argument against bringing the Belgian back early, from a fan perspective, seems to be that it would put his young shoulders under too much pressure.

But, actually, how can he do any worse than the current lot?

And what if he had been signed in the summer under normal circumstances anyway?

Yes, there would be big expectation should he return early.

But there is for every Liverpool player, and he will have to get used to it at some point. Giving him a six-month head-start to do so—as well as adapting to a new country—seems highly logical, and it would also diminish the need to go and sign another short-term solution instead.

Yes, he would not develop as quickly in this current Liverpool side as last season’s swashbuckling one.

But it would surely be better than staying at Lille, the lowest scorers in the French top-flight and currently closer to the relegation zone than a top-six spot.

Andrew Gibney, editor of French Football Weekly, recently wrote of the forward: “Too often his head has looked elsewhere and he looks like a player who is mentally already playing his football at Anfield.”

The player himself essentially confirmed as much: “Maybe January, who knows? I would like to join Liverpool then… I can’t wait to be playing in the Premier League because I can now see that it will suit me better.”

Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, is reportedly in regular contact and was quoted in October as saying: “We believe he will be world-class… he could play for Liverpool now. He can run in behind, he can press and he can keep the ball.”

Those qualities have been sorely missed in the presence of Lambert and Balotelli.

Clearly, then, Rodgers would like Origi as an option in January, and the player himself wants the same outcome.

So what’s stopping it happening?

Lille.

In the summer of 2013, Liverpool knew their chances of securing a Champions League place would be ruined by selling Luis Suarez to a top-four rival.

They rightly held firm.

For Lille, the fear regarding letting Origi leave early would be that it could propel them into an unforeseen relegation battle, having secured a Champions League place in three of the last four seasons themselves.

In truth, however, that prospect is surely as unlikely as European qualification.

If the player himself wants out, are they not better building for the future in a season which increasingly looks like a write-off?

Besides, with three goals and an assist in 11 games, it is not as if the 19-year-old is performing so brilliantly they cannot afford to lose him.

A few extra million could even allow the French outfit—which loses 9 million euros a year on the newly-built State Pierre-Mauroy stadium–to sign a slightly higher-calibre replacement than previously budgeted for.

For Liverpool, the right decision would have been to use the £4 million spent on Rickie Lambert more shrewdly, i.e. by tempting Lille into selling Origi permanently in the summer.

But hindsight is 20/20, and credit must go to the hierarchy for seemingly looking to rectify a mistake.

With Liverpool, Lille and Origi all struggling, it seems inevitable it will happen once the transfer window mayhem re-opens.

And it might just work out best for all involved.

Brett Curtis

Divock Origi joining Liverpool early makes sense for all parties

Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson has opened up about his ambitions and career so far in an interview for FA TV.

Henderson has seen a rapid rise in recent years to becoming a mainstay of both Liverpool and England’s first-teams — and the 24-year-old puts it down to hard work.

“I think I’ve improved and I keep on improving – that’s all that interests me really,” the former Sunderland midfielder said.

“I’ve always said from day one, you only get out of life what you put into it, so you’ve got to work as hard as you can and you’ll get your just rewards.”

Henderson was handed Liverpool’s vice-captaincy this season, playing understudy to Steven Gerrard, who he has absorbed footballing education from.

“I’d have to say Steven Gerrard has been my biggest influence in my career so far,” he said.

“I watched him when I was younger and then to go and play and train with hime every day was massive for me, and still is now.”

On his England responsibilities, Henderson added, “I think it’s right to start helping the younger lads coming through and a lot of us have taken that responsibility on.

“We’ve got a great group here and hopefully that continues.`

Henderson has made 147 appearances for Liverpool since signing in 2011, scoring 14 goals and has won 18 caps for England.

Daniel Sturridge: Suffering injury problems

Daniel Sturridge: Suffering injury problems

Liverpool are launching a medical investigation after Daniel Sturridge suffered the ninth injury of his career in his left thigh.

The England striker has been ruled out for another six weeks with the second injury of this nascent season to the same thigh.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers previously blamed England for aggravating Sturridge's injury but he has now gone public in his concern about the recurring problem.

"We reckon it’s his ninth injury on the same thing from previous clubs here and there," said Rodgers.

"So there seems to be an underlying issue somewhere. Our medical team are looking into it, the latest scans show a slight tear just below where he had a previous injury.

"Daniel is very disappointed and so are we. It is hugely disappointing to be without a player of his quality. Most players you will find want to play through an injury to get on to the field and when the incident happened in training it was through quite an innocuous action.

"He just flicked the ball and instantly felt the pain, it wasn’t a shot or anything that looked as if it might be serious."

There have been suggestions that Liverpool could pay a fee to cut short Divock Origi's loan back to Lille, but Rodgers has instead put pressure on Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert to produce goals in Sturridge's absence.

"For the time being we just have to focus on the players we do have," Rodgers said. "We have to make the best of what is available.

"You could say it presents an opportunity for the guys who have been on the sidelines for a while. We have an exciting period of games coming up, we have to ensure we go back to our basics and be really hard to beat, we need to be strong and aggressive.

"Most of all we want to make an impact in front of goal, now there’s an opportunity for some players who didn’t think they would get a chance."

Moreno mendedahkan kepada media bahawa dia kini dahagakan jaringan gol peribadi dan juga buat pasukan.

"Semua pemain gemar jaringkan gol, terutama sekali saya la, sebab masa saya kecik dulu, kerap sangat saya jaringkan gol masa saya main forward back dulu."

"Masa saya kecik dulu, saya banyak main jadi winger ke wide attacking midfielder, bukan full back. Tapi saya suka jaringkan gol dan yang lebih kurang camtu la, pastu buat assist gak, seperti mana seorang attacking fullback perlu buat.

"Kalau ditengokkan sekarang, saya dah ada satu gol dan satu assist untuk 12 games, jadi saya jangkakan mungkin la saya boleh catatkan 5 gol dan 5 assist atau lebih la untuk musim ni."

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, and this would be a wise but expensive move, writes Jack Lusby

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, December 1, 2012: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling in action against Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After a successful international break, making his England debut and arguably solidifying his position as the Three Lions’ first-choice right-back under Roy Hodgson, Nathaniel Clyne returns to the Premier League amid unsurprising speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool.

With the successive moves for Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana this summer, it may seem lazy journalism to report more interest from Liverpool in a Southampton player.

However, with the Reds’ recruitment department seeming increasingly devoid of inspiration, there is reason to suggest that there could be fire to accompany this November smoke.

Reports emerging on Wednesday night, via the Daily Mail , suggest that the Saints “are preparing to offer England’s man of the moment Nathaniel Clyne a new deal as part of a contract renewal drive.

“Clyne is likely to attract interest from rival clubs next summer, with Liverpool understood to be monitoring his progress.”

This contract would surely see Clyne’s value rocket to the £15-20 million mark—but would this still represent good value for a player who has risen to the top ranks in terms of Premier League right-backs?

Nathaniel Clyne

In the past three seasons at Saint Mary’s, Clyne has become one of the league’s premier talents at right-back, and his recent England call-up is justified, if not perhaps a little tardy.

The Saints No. 2 has been central to the cause as Ronald Koeman’s side have surged to the upper echelons of the Premier League.

This is based, along with the efforts of Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic in scoring and creating, on a rock-solid back line, who have kept seven clean sheets in 11 league games so far.

Clyne’s defensive contribution is integral to this, and the Englishman is one of few full-backs in the country who prioritises his defensive duties over that of the attack.

An average of five tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game so far outlines this.

However, of course, the 23-year-old is more than handy going forward too—Clyne has made an average of 0.5 key passes and 0.4 crosses per game this term.

Reds fans need not look far to see how devastating Clyne’s attacking forays can be, with his consolation effort in Rodgers’ side’s opening day victory over Southampton outlines.

Just watch how Clyne’s Liverpool counterpart, Glen Johnson, fails to track the movement of the right-back—and even the ball—while finishing the move by ambling into the box half-heartedly.

Liverpool’s interest is perhaps encapsulated in that one moment.

Glen Johnson

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, August 25, 2014: Liverpool's Glen Johnson injured during the Premier League match against Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The first obvious issue to confront with Liverpool’s right-back reserves is the ongoing contract speculation regarding current, and bemusing, first-choice for the Reds in Johnson.

To add to the miserable news that Daniel Sturridge is set to face another long-term lay-off, the Reds are reportedly offering the 30-year-old defender “a £60K per week, two-year deal,” as a reward for his risible performances on Merseyside this season.

Johnson has dropped remarkably in form over the past few years, and was this season dropped by England manager Hodgson in favour of Clyne and Arsenal’s Calum Chambers.

This is no surprise, given Clyne’s performances compared to those of Johnson in the Premier League this season.

Southampton’s aforementioned seven clean sheets from 11 league games so far this term dwarf the zero shut-outs the Reds have accomplished with Johnson in the back four.

Furthermore, Johnson’s average of 1.5 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game, pales in comparison to Clyne’s defensive output.

With the Reds defender regularly praised for his attacking prowess—a baseless notion—it is remarkable to see, too, that Clyne betters Johnson in terms of crosses made, key passes and goals scored this season.

Johnson has averaged 0.2 crosses, 0.2 key passes, and has registered no goals despite attempting more shots per game (0.8) compared to Clyne’s 0.3.

Clearly, the Southampton man is a better option than Johnson. Hodgson has already decided so, but is Rodgers finally catching on that his most-cherished of defenders is not quite the player he used to be?

In the Liverpool ranks alone, one player already stands head and shoulders above Johnson, but Javier Manquillo’s long-term future may underline any reported interest in Clyne.

The Manquillo Issue

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Southampton FC

Having joined the Reds on a two-year loan deal from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid this summer, Spanish right-back Manquillo has impressed with his intelligent defensive displays.

Furthermore, while Johnson is lauded for his attacking output, Manquillo possesses an underrated crossing technique and knows when to bomb forward and when to stay in a more reserved position, with his understanding of left-back Alberto Moreno’s movements particularly impressive.

However, with the 20-year-old currently only a loanee on Merseyside, it is perhaps understandable that Rodgers remains cautious when ostracising his permanent charges.

Manquillo’s recent words suggest a measure of a temporal in his spell with the Reds:

“My objective here was to become a better player, and I’m getting [the necessary games]. I came here knowing what they had. Johnson’s one of the world’s best but Atleti and I decided it was best for me [to move], as I needed to play. Here you have the pressure of playing for a big team with expectations, and that helps you mature. It’s not easy, but my [personal] expectations are being met.

If Manquillo is planning on returning to Madrid after his spell with Liverpool, it is perhaps wise for Rodgers to look elsewhere; Martin Montoya has also recently been linked with a move.

However, if the opposite is true, as an exceptional defender already on Liverpool’s books Manquillo should be nurtured with a long-term Anfield future in mind.

The No. 19 offers a rate of 3.4 tackles, 2.4 interceptions, 0.1 key passes and 0.3 crosses per game, based on his seven league appearances so far.

At three years Clyne’s junior Manquillo is already an impressive defensive talent, with great upside.

Before Rodgers targets Clyne, he must ascertain the Spaniard’s long-term future on Merseyside. If not, the Southampton man would be an astute signing for the Reds, even at an elevated price.

Should Liverpool target Nathaniel Clyne in the future? Let us know in the comments below.
