Mario Balotelli: Yet to score a Premier League goal for Liverpool

Mario Balotelli: Yet to score a Premier League goal for Liverpool

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has expressed sympathy for under-fire team-mate Mario Balotelli.

The 24-year-old striker has failed to score for the Reds since his £16million move from AC Milan in August

Balotelli failed to convert a stoppage-time chance to take three points against Hull City on Saturday, which followed his open-goal miss against QPR last week.

A bookmaker ridiculed Balotelli's recent performances, offering fans outside Anfield the chance to trade in shirts bearing his name.

The controversial Italian was also spotted swapping shirts at half-time during Liverpool’s 0-3 defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Working hard

Sktrel said: "He is working hard and showed some good moments. I feel sorry for him. He is working hard in training, he is working hard in the game. He just hasn't got the goals.

"We just believe in him. We will be supporting him and just hope he will start scoring goals."

Liverpool have won just four of their nine games and Skrtel says he takes little satisfaction from an improved defensive showing.

He added: "It is normal when you are conceding goals that the back four and the keeper will always be the first to be blamed.

"We fixed it, we got a clean sheet, but we couldn't get the three points, so that's not good enough. We played for the points. We could have won and it's disappointing.

"I would have preferred to win 5-4 and get three points than draw 0-0 and geta point. I think we played well and just couldn't score the goal."

Jeff Goulding reflects on Liverpool’s first goalless draw in 48 games – and offers for Mario Balotelli, something he didn’t get in his lone forward role again.

Some decisions in life are easy, like when you wake up with a slight hangover and contemplate whether you actually want to go the match, given the gloom hanging over the club right now. You open the blinds and see that the whether matches your mood, but the pre-match butterflies dancing in your gut tell you to grow a pair and you realise there’s really no decision to make. Before you know your wrestling with the next big decision Fanzine or beer before the game. That’s easy too – you do both.

Then we come to the really big decisions. Those, that when you get it wrong, you find it really difficult to understand what was going through your mind in the first place. I am sure that the management team in the Flat Iron thought it was an excellent idea to hire a rock band to serenade supporters as the traipsed in after another less than satisfactory result. It really wasn’t. To be honest I felt more sorry for them than us.

Even harder to fathom, in hindsight, was the decision to persist with Mario Balotelli as a lone striker. The appearance of Rickie Lambert in the closing stages demonstrated that, if you are going to play him at all, Mario needs a strike partner. To continue to ask him to lead the line is placing unnecessary burden on the lad and giving his critics even more ammunition.

All of the chat before the game had been about Balotelli. I had convinced myself that he should be taken out of the team, and had gone for a front three of Lallana, Coutinho and Sterling in the false nine role. I was surprised that Rodgers decided to start with the enigmatic Italian, but I wasn’t too bothered. Many have questioned the managers decision making around the striker. Some suggest he was unfair to be critical of the player in the aftermath of the Madrid game, others are critical of the fact he signed him in the first place. Such is the polarising effect of Balotelli.

I can understand both sides of the argument, but on this one I am prepared to bow to the bosses judgement. Rodgers has always struck me as an excellent man manager. He sees the players on the training field everyday, talks to them, listens to them, and therefore he is ideally placed to decide whether a star needs a comforting arm or kick up the arse. On Wednesday he opted for the latter, at full time yesterday he chose to champion the strikers work ethic. This is the managers prerogative.

On whether we should have signed him in the first place, I argued it was far too early to judge. I wanted to see a bit more of the Mario that partnered Sturridge against Tottenham before I rush to any conclusions. Mario dominated the conversation and as we downed our glasses and left the pub,the debate continued into the ground, halted only by a discussion on the relevance of the excellent Black Flag protest against ticket prices. It was only a brief respite though, and as the game got underway the debate continued.

The first half went by in a bit of blur for me, and it wasn’t the beer. Liverpool were rarely threatened, but then we did little to set the pulse racing ourselves. For us this was frustrating. For Hull they must have thought Christmas had come early. With a squad devastated by injuries their game plan was understandably to leave with a point. The reds offered nothing in the first half to suggest they would leave disappointed.

It was far too easy for them. Steve Bruce felt sufficiently relaxed to exchange a bit of banter with the Kop. As one the old terrace belted out an ode to the Hull Boss’ unusually large noggin, and he responded by hiding it under his suit jacket. The Kop responded with laughter and applause. It was all very nice and sportsmanlike.

Others have bemoaned the fact that we lack a nasty streak, or to quote an overheard snippet on the way home, “Liverpool need an ‘arl arse’ in the team”. I am proud of our reputation for recognising the qualities of the opposition. That’s how it should be. I was happy the Kop applauded off Madrid’s substitutes on Wednesday, but there are limits. I wasn’t happy that Glen Johnson was laughing and joking with Ronaldo during the game. The fact that we didn’t have a single player booked that night says it all.

What happened to us making a visit to Anfield the toughest 90 minutes of an opponents lives?

On Saturday, just like on Wednesday, for a good seventy minutes Liverpool rarely made their opponents sweat. We just didn’t get under their skin, and I doubt they ever thought that anything other than a draw was on the cards. All that did change though when a flurry of late substitutions changed the game if not the result. Lambert and Coutinho replaced Lallana and Allen just on the hour mark, and Henderson entered the fray on 75 minutes for the impressive Emre Can.

The arrival of a foil for Balotelli, the inventiveness of Coutinho and the energy and drive of Henderson finally gave the visitors something to think about. Frustration and fear gave way to hope, as wave after wave of attacks crashed against the Kop goal mouth. The noise level ratcheted up at last, gone were the sporting niceties the Kop were now baying for blood. It was all too little too late though. Why hadn’t we started this way?

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks dejected as his side draw 0-0 with Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The toiling Balotelli looked a frustrated and dejected figure as each chance went begging. It seemed easier to score some of them than miss. However, when you want something so bad, when the eyes of the world are on you, and you feel the pressure of the chattering classes willing you to fail, sometimes the easy becomes the impossible.

There can be no doubt that Mario Balotelli wants to do well for the Reds. To see him crest-fallen and crumpled on the turf at full time was as heartbreaking as the result. There is also no doubt in my opinion that he is a quality player.

He will have been glad of his managers words of encouragement after the game. He will have also taken comfort from the Kop’s continued chants of Mario Magnifico! Just like with Peter Crouch before him, who failed to net until December in his debut season, the roof is going to come off Anfield when Balotelli eventually, inevitably breaks his duck. Until then he shouldn’t walk alone.

Desperation and anger filled the air on the way back to Flat Iron. Unsurprisingly our moods hadn’t been lifted by George Sephton’s news that Bournemouth had beaten Birmingham 8-0 in the Championship. Passing conversations were a mix of the philosophical and the apoplectic, I was silent. Could things get any more miserable? Over to that poor Rock Band.

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel feels sorry for Mario Balotelli as the striker’s struggles continue.

Balotelli has still not scored in the Premier League since joining the Reds in a £16million deal in August. His luckless run continued as Hull frustrated the Merseysiders to claim a goalless draw on Saturday.

Balotelli was far from the worst player on the pitch, producing a committed display which offered encouragement after some of his heavily criticised efforts of recent weeks.

But coming after the controversy of midweek, when he was seen swapping shirts at half-time of the 3-0 loss to Real Madrid, the spotlight was on him.

That meant his lack of goals was again highlighted and the spurned stoppage-time chance, when Eldin Jakupovic denied him at point-blank range, commanded a lot of headlines.

A bookmaker also ridiculed Balotelli’s lack of output, offering fans outside the ground the chance to trade in shirts bearing his names for different ones in a publicity stunt.

But Skrtel came to the Italian’s defence, saying: “He is working hard and showed some good moments. I feel sorry for him. He is working hard in training, he is working hard in the game. He just hasn’t got the goals.

“We just believe in him. We will be supporting him and just hope he will start scoring goals.”

Liverpool’s performance was patchy but they had some good spells, notably in the first and last 15 minutes, and Balotelli was at the fore. He brought a good early save from Hull’s third-choice goalkeeper Jakupovic, took up good positions, worked hard off the ball and had a penalty appeal turned down.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli during the Premier League match against Hull City at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

He almost settled the game in dramatic circumstances in the fourth minute of injury time when he got on the end of a Philippe Coutinho cross but Jakupovic blocked.

Coutinho had himself been denied by Jakupovic moments earlier and Raheem Sterling shot narrowly wide. Steven Gerrard and Dejan Lovren also had good chances for Brendan Rodgers‘ men.

Hull’s best spell came in the latter stages of the first half when Jake Livermore, Mohamed Diame and Tom Huddlestone had chances.

It was another frustrating result for Liverpool, who have won just four of their nine games and Skrtel took little satisfaction from an improved defensive showing.

The Slovakia international said: “It is normal when you are conceding goals that the back four and the keeper will always be the first to be blamed.

“We fixed it, we got a clean sheet, but we couldn’t get the three points, so that’s not good enough. We played for the points. We could have won and it’s disappointing.

“I would have preferred to win 5-4 and get three points than draw 0-0 and get a point. I think we played well and just couldn’t score the goal.”

For Hull, who have had to deal with a clutch of injuries, the result was another encouraging one after last week’s point at Arsenal.

Midfielder Ahmed Elmohamady felt it was further proof of the club’s continuing development, with the squad’s greater depth now allowing the Tigers to compete with the top sides on a regular basis.

The Egypt international said: “Everyone in the squad is absolutely fantastic. We missed (Michael) Dawson, Jela (Nikica Jelavic), (Steve) Harper, Allan McGregor – but all the players came and did fantastic.

“Everyone is working hard to get their chance in the team and we worked very hard. We are looking forward to every game to get a result, home or away, even against the tough teams.

“That’s two games in a row against top-four teams and we are looking forward to the next game at home now, against another tough team in Southampton. We are looking forward to getting the three points.

“We should have scored in the first half here and we had two or three chances but we will take a point. The performance was absolutely fantastic.”

Mario Balotelli made it eight games without a goal in the 0-0 draw with Hull City on Saturday, but Liverpool’s set up didn’t help the Italian, writes Jack Lusby.

Liverpool’s run of poor form continued at Anfield on Saturday with a 0-0 draw against Premier League mid-tablers Hull City.

The Reds came closest to a win, with Steve Bruce’s side not offering much in the attacking third, but their profligacy continued as the Tigers held on with a valiant defensive display.

However, whilst the result was drab and disappointing, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers can have no complaints, as his neglect of the lack of width in his side saw Mario Balotelli once more devoid of support and, therefore, devoid of goals.

Tactical Layout

As Rodgers continued to accommodate the absence of star striker Daniel Sturridge due to injury, the Northern Irishman set out with a 4-3-3 formation at Anfield on Saturday.

A midfield three of Emre Can, Steven Gerrard and Joe Allen saw Jordan Henderson rested, with Allen taking his place as the most advanced of the central midfielders.

Ahead of the trio were wide men Adam Lallana, on the left, and Raheem Sterling, on the right, flanking lone striker Mario Balotelli.

Hull boss Bruce opted for a 5-4-1 formation, utilising the strength in his wing-back options.

Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady adopted the right and left defensive flanks respectively, pushing forward when able to support the attacking front and providing diligent cover at the back.

Ahead of the pair, and their back three of Alex Bruce, James Chester and Curtis Davies, Bruce deployed a four man midfield of Mohamed Diame, Tom Huddlestone, Jake Livermore and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Ben Arfa, in the No. 10, played off Uruguayan summer signing and lone striker Abel Hernandez.

Mario Balotelli

Of course, despite Liverpool’s recent defensive woes and a run of muted form, the main focus of criticism on Merseyside remains Balotelli.

Balotelli is regularly criticised for his work rate, but this remains unfounded and against Hull this continued; according to WhoScored, Balotelli made more defensive actions (3) than Sterling and Lallana, and the same amount as Allen.

Continuing to struggle in his role as a lone striker however, Balotelli was offered little support from the flanks—this is crucial if the Italian is to succeed in the absence of Daniel Sturridge.

In maintaining that Balotelli will “adapt” to this role, Rodgers recently claimed that he “spoke to him a lot about getting in the box,” and therefore on the end of crosses.

The two players charged with chiefly supporting the 24-year-old were Lallana and Sterling, but both failed to create the space and provide that service that would see Balotelli thrive.

This is no surprise, of course, as both players are most effective in a central role, and we have seen that so far from Lallana in a Liverpool shirt and with the development of Sterling into a devastating No. 10.

The deployment of Allen as the most advanced of the three central midfielders contributed to this. The Welshman is not effective in this attacking prong, and as such Lallana and Sterling were drawn to the inside in order to create chances.

Lack of Width vs. Hull

This could be seen on 13 minutes, as a through-ball from Sterling (circled right) found Balotelli in space, but dragged the Italian too wide and his shot was comfortably saved at the near post.

Lallana (circled left) found himself in a position square of Balotelli in the box, and the striker was a victim of his desperation, instead going for a shot from a nigh-impossible angle.

Balotelli was left to feed off scraps in the first 60 minutes — it has been made abundantly clear that the Italian is not an off-the-shoulder centre-forward — and Rodgers is continuing to misuse his £16 million signing.

Philippe Coutinho

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Much of this was resolved with the introduction of Coutinho.

After a barnstorming cameo against QPR the previous weekend, and a stand-out showing early on against Madrid at Anfield in Wednesday’s Champions League clash, it came as a surprise that Liverpool No. 10 Coutinho was left on the bench against Hull.

This was particularly baffling given he and Jordan Henderson were both substituted on 67 minutes against Madrid, presumably in order to save their legs for Saturday.

Once more, however, the Brazilian had to settle for a place on the bench; theories remain that Coutinho is a better impact player, but given his role against Madrid, these are unfounded.

Replacing the ineffective Lallana on 61 minutes, Coutinho provided Liverpool with further attacking impetus, with Bruce’s side rather fortunate to hold on for the stalemate.

This saw Balotelli come in to life, too.

Not least this could be seen with a fantastic charge down the left flank by the 22-year-old, aided by a one-two with Gerrard, in stoppage time.

Coutinho’s cross, whipped in from the outside of his boot, almost gifted Balotelli with a rare positive headline—were it not for another great save by Jakupovic, the Italian would have netted the latest of winners and sealed the three points for the Reds.

According to WhoScored, Coutinho made five crosses in his 30 minutes on the pitch, more than both Sterling (4) and Lallana (2).

The introduction of Coutinho, arguably man of the match despite an appearance lasting around half an hour, provided Balotelli with the service he requires. Having Lambert alongside also provided support and it’s increasingly clear he needs to be played with a strike partner.

Rodgers’ mistake here was to leave Coutinho out in the first place, and isolate Balotelli up front again.

Should Philippe Coutinho have started against Hull City to get the best out of Mario Balotelli? Let us know in the comments below.

Lack of Liverpool Width Against Hull Adds to Mario Balotelli’s Struggles

Unknown   at  23:11  No comments

It was bound to happen – Liverpool have been linked with West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahinho, the 21-year-old who has seven Premier League goals this season, including a penalty at Anfield earlier this month.

The Burundi-born England under-21 international has impressed with his composure in front of goal and is linked in The Sunday Mail, who claim Liverpool are considering a January move for the front man.

The report claims that Tottenham are also interested in Berahino and that West Brom value the player at £25 million.

They also claim that Wilfried Bony, a player Liverpool considered in the summer and has scored four Premier League goals for Swansea this season, is also under consideration at Anfield again.

The report also adds that Liverpool acknowledge that Mario Balotelli, still without a league goal in seven appearances, is a gamble and could look to cut their losses in January.

While Balotelli again failed to net on Saturday against Hull at Anfield, Bony hit two for Swansea, Berahino scored for West Brom and Liverpool’s prime summer target Alexis Sanchez hit two for Arsenal at Sunderland.

Liverpool and Balotelli looked far better once Brendan Rodgers changed formation with half an hour remaining, bringing on Rickie Lambert and changing to an orthodox 4-4-2 formation.

ANALYSIS

LIVHUL (0-0)

ANFIELD

FIRST HALF.

Terlalu naif ! Itulah ayat untuk first half.

Not typical no.9 , second striker YES.

MO.

Good game but bad result.

BIG IMPROVEMENT

1. Liverpool efektif dalam build up dan mencipta peluang

2. Lebih kreatif

3. Berjaya menghalang Hull bermain corak mereka

4. Clean Sheet .finally !

ANYWAY , STILL I LOVE U REDS
