Should the Premier League export its matches abroad?

Should the Premier League export its matches abroad?

With the prospect of the Premier League going abroad being discussed again, two TEAMtalk writers argue over whether it is a good idea.

The Premier League is reportedly considering plans to resurrect the controversial idea of each club playing one match abroad.

A similar proposal for a 39th game was abandoned in 2008 after outcry from supporters and was rejected again by Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore in 2010.

However, it now appears that the Premier League may have altered their position following the success of NBA and NFL matches in England.

The revised proposal would not involve a 39th round of matches but instead see one of the existing rounds played in a foreign country, raising questions about unequal home and away programmes.

Should Premier League clubs play regular season matches on foreign soil?

YES - Ian Watson

Whether you like it or not, the Premier League will go on tour.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said in August that "it will happen at some point", while Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins thinks "it is inevitable it is going to happen".

We may as well get on board with it and ensure it is done in the right way.

The US sports have shown the way to go. The NFL, NBA and MLB have all successfully taken regular-season games abroad, and have succeded in improving their sports' profile, brand (yes, the B-word) and financial health. All three sports adopted a gradual implementation, with pre-season games first being taken to new markets before, over years later, competitive matches were exported.

The Premier League is already a long way down that road. Lucrative pre-season tours are a fixture in all the biggest teams' calendars, while the Premier League Asia Trophy - a bi-annual event which sees Premier League teams compete in places such as Malaysia, Beijing and Hong Kong - first took place 11 years ago.

The next obvious step is to take the Community Shield abroad, just as the French and Italian equivalents have already done. Purists have objected even to that development, but the tradational curtain-raiser hasn't been played in front of a capacity crowd in England for years. The only possible progression beyond that is to stage competitive Premier League matches in foreign lands.

The market will demand it. Over £2billion of the £5.5billion Premier League TV rights deal for 2013-16 comes from sale of overseas rights. Very soon, a sofa season-ticket and the odd PR-driven pre-season visit won't be enough to satisfy the insatiable hunger of supporters abroad. Other leagues and sports will be more than willing to fill the void if the Premier League isn't willing to travel.

The '39th game' is not the way to do it. Such a concept would alter the format and fairness of the Premier League too much. Even staging a full round of fixtures outside England is not ideal, as some teams would then have 19 home games, others only 18, and managers and fans won't shy away from using that as an excuse for a moan. But, aside from taking two matchdays abroad - one 'home' and one 'away' for each team - it is the best solution in the short term.

Given the revenue that could be generated, there would surely be scope for clubs to subsidise travel for match-goers who wish to follow their teams. For fans of the smaller clubs not versed in European competition, would that not be as attractive as yet another trip up the same-old motorway to an away ground they are already all-too-familiar with? The rewards reaped may even give clubs a nudge to reduce the often-outrageous prices they charge at the turnstiles though, admittedly, that is a wildly-optmistic suggestion.

Regardless, the Premier League roadshow will happen because the clubs want it to happen. And tradition, in this case at least, is not a strong enough argument to stop it.

NO - Mark Holmes

Like Ian, I have little doubt that competitive English football will be played abroad at some stage.

And, like Ian, I am not against it, even as something of a traditionalist. After all, although it clearly wouldn't be affordable to all, how great would it be for those of us that don't support one of the elite to watch our team playing abroad in front of thousands in the United States, China, Malaysia or some other far-flung destination?

Having followed Stoke across Europe during their Europa League adventure a few seasons back, I for one would jump at the chance to head overseas to watch us again.

However, it would never, ever be fair to host part of the regular Premier League season overseas, whether one round, two rounds or more.

Imagine, for example, a relegation-threatened team being handed a 'home' game against Manchester United in the Far East.

While a Burnley or QPR might ordinarily have a chance of causing a shock on their own patch, any home advantage would be completely taken away by playing at a neutral stadium in front of thousands of fans that would undoubtedly be cheering on the 'away' side.

You have to wonder how long this apparent support from clubs would last once points lost overseas started costing them crucial league places.

To avoid the league season being affected, how about setting up a new Premier League Cup for the top eight clubs to be played overseas?

Let's be honest, it's only the biggest clubs that overseas fans really want to see, and those eight clubs could be excluded from the League Cup (a sacrifice they would no doubt be willing to make given the money on offer), which would suddenly make that competition a whole lot more interesting for the remaining 84 clubs whose chances of winning it would suddenly be increased.

It is not a proposal without questions - would all three rounds be played overseas, for example, in which case when and over what time period? - but playing competitive league football overseas is guaranteed to cause problems.

What do you think? Do you believe the Premier League should play regular season games abroad? Have your say by voting in our poll and use the story comment facility to state your case.

Ketua liga bolaepak negara tersebut, Javier Tebas berkata tekanan sekarang begitu besar ke atas kebarangkalian referendum kemerdekaan pada bulan hadapan.

Sterling, Wilshere and Barkley: Could play for Under-21s

Sterling, Wilshere and Barkley: Could play for Under-21s

England should seriously consider using the likes of John Stones, Phil Jones, Jack Wilshere and Raheem Sterling at U21 level, writes Adam Bate.

As England's Under-21 team prepare for their two-legged play-off with Croatia for a place at the 2015 European Championships, coach Gareth Southgate will understandably put his trust in the players who topped their qualifying group with nine wins from 10 matches.

Several high-profile youngsters are busy with a double header of their own, of course, as England's senior team look to secure their own spot at Euro 2016. But it's what should happen next summer if the Under-21 side qualify for the finals in the Czech Republic that is really interesting.

Southgate's predecessor Stuart Pearce became an increasingly outspoken figure as his frustrations in the role grew towards the latter stages of his six-year spell in charge.

Whether it was players being denied him by call-ups to the senior side, club managers refusing to release them or even the young men themselves showing little interest in Under-21 football, Pearce clearly felt the support was not always there.

Having reached the semi-finals in 2007 and then the final in 2009, the experiences of 2011 and 2013 left a sour taste - two group stage eliminations with England losing three out of three in Israel last year.

Pearce was, of course, obliged to defend his tenure but his words were typically impassioned. Speaking to Sky Sports last September, he sounded like a man being asked to play poker without the picture cards.

"In our wildest dreams do you honestly think that England or any nation in the world can turn up at a major tournament without six or seven - I think there were eight players with senior international caps - who could have played for the England Under-21s this summer?

"Once they go through the golden ivory towers of the seniors they don't want to come and play with the Under-21s any more. There is no nation in the world that could suffer that."

Logic

It's worth noting that in the summer of last year England were preparing for a World Cup in Brazil.

A showpiece friendly with the hosts at the Maracana was ostensibly a celebration of 150 years of the Football Association but it also seemed to serve a practical purpose for England's players so there was a certain logic behind including those expected to be in Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain even had the experience of scoring a fine goal that surely justified his trip.

But the summer of 2015 is a different situation entirely, and there are signs of flexibility in the thinking. Luke Shaw has been included in Southgate's squad for the Croatia games in the knowledge that it best serves England for him to be there rather than sat on a bench watching Leighton Baines deal with San Marino.

But there is an opportunity to go further should England reach the tournament itself.

It's not only Shaw who is eligible for the tournament. Indeed, Southgate could field a back-four consisting of full internationals without even calling on the Manchester United left-back. Calum Chambers, John Stones, Phil Jones and Jon Flanagan would make for a strong defence.

In midfield, there is the enticing prospect of unleashing Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Even Jack Wilshere is theoretically available for selection despite being a little over six months shy of his 24th birthday when the tournament takes place. Born on New Year's Day 1992, he is - to the day - the oldest a player can possibly be while still eligible to compete.

There is an argument that this would be a backward step for these players. Wilshere made his senior England debut as long ago as August 2010, while his Arsenal team-mate Oxlade-Chamberlain featured at Euro 2012. But others will point to the involvement of Juan Mata and Javi Martinez in Spain's successful 2011 team despite having been World Cup winners the previous year.

Southgate, however, is prepared to ignore any calls to draft in the star names.

"I can tell you now that isn't even in my thinking. Alex, for example, has been to two major championships. Those guys are seniors.

"I know people cite Spain, with Mata and a couple of others. But this is fairly typical of most Under-21 coaches around Europe. Christian Eriksen still qualifies to play for Denmark but I don't see the Danes clamouring for him.

"It is that balance. You need to see what can be gained by bringing them back into this environment."

The question of what can be gained is a tricky one to assess. For instance, there is the question of fairness and loyalty to players who've gone through a qualifying process that encompassed trips to Lithuania and Moldova. But if the end goal is a successful senior team, perhaps that ought to be a secondary concern.

More worryingly, there is the danger that the exercise could prove counter-productive. Motivation is key and for players with Champions League experience, a game in front of a few thousand in the Czech town of Uherske Hradiste might not spark the necessary high levels of enthusiasm.

Hope

However, there must be hope that the prospect of tournament success can inspire England's best.

While England's young talent did get a flavour of Brazil, for Jones, Shaw, Wilshere and Barkley their only start came in a goalless dead rubber against Costa Rica. Oxlade-Chamberlain, despite Southgate's talk of him going to tournaments, played a total of 80 minutes of football in them. These are hardly seasoned veterans just yet.

The 2015 tournament offers something else. There is the chance to actually lift a trophy - surely a possibility for a full-strength England in an eight-team tournament - and be part of what could be a transformative fortnight for all the players involved.

That's certainly how Ander Herrera remembers that 2011 victory for Spain alongside Mata and the rest.

"To play with the best Under-21 players in the country, share so many experiences and then actually win it creates a special bond between us," said the now Manchester United midfielder.

The prospect of Barkley, Sterling and Wilshere sharing an experience like that in France in 2016 is what all England fans will be hoping for.

What the FA and the players themselves need to consider if the Under-21 team overcome Croatia, is whether or not tasting that glory a year earlier in the Czech Republic might just make the ultimate dream that little bit more achievable.

Potential England U21 team: Butland, Flanagan, Chambers, Stones, Shaw; Jones, Wilshere; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Barkley, Sterling; Berahino.

U21 call-ups could benefit senior stars

Lazar Markovic: Enjoying life at Liverpool

Lazar Markovic: Enjoying life at Liverpool

Lazar Markovic is happy with his choice to join Liverpool but hopes he will be given time to settle fully at Anfield.

The highly-rated winger is experiencing life in England for the first time, following two full seasons in his native Serbia with Partizan and one in Portugal with Benfica.

At just 20 years of age, he has progressed rapidly to find himself on the books of a Premier League heavyweight.

Liverpool are aware of the need to avoid asking too much of the youngster early on, despite shelling out £20million on his services, and have looked to ease him into the fold.

Markovic has welcomed that approach, and believes it is important for him to feel comfortable on and off the field if he is to produce his best.

He told Mondo: “You know how things go in football, I’m getting there and adjusting well.

“It will take a little more time but, all in all, I feel okay.

“I feel great there and everybody has been great with me. I could not wish for more. I’m happy and that is the most important thing.

“My team-mate is the legendary Steven Gerrard, the fans love me and Anfield is great. But, as I said, I just need a little bit more time.”

Jordan Henderson is not letting talk of a new Liverpool contract distract him, insisting he’ll “be here for many years”.

Reports over the weekend suggested Henderson will be offered a new five-year deal at Anfield after becoming one of the first team’s most important players.

Henderson, who has made X appearances for Liverpool since joining from Sunderland in 2011, was recently promoted to vice-captain after demonstrating increasingly passionate leadership on the pitch.

With many tipping the 24-year-old to soon be the first choice Liverpool skipper, a new long-term deal seems a no-brainer from the club’s point of view.

“I am just concentrating on playing football,” Henderson told press ahead of England’s forthcoming European Championships qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia. “I am not worried about that.

“I am enjoying my football, I love this club and I want to be here for many years so that shouldn’t be an issue.”

Henderson’s professional-like manner in speaking about his career and ambitions will be praised again as he added, “I’ll let my agent sort that out, it’s nothing to do with me.”

The midfielder was Liverpool’s man of the match on Saturday as they earned a vital Premier League victory over West Brom at Anfield.

His second-half winner, slotting home with great composure past Baggies’ keeper Ben Foster, was topped off by spearheading the Reds to victory.

After the game Brendan Rodgers explained how moving Henderson to a more advanced role against West Brom helped win the game.

“We flipped the midfield triangle about and played with Stevie controlling and Jordan just in advance of that,” he told press.

“He’s the one player in the country that can really dominate a game without the ball due to his running capacity. He has great physicality in the game and today was about trying to get him forward that bit more and encouraging him to go [forward].

“That forward run allows him to offer the combination with Adam for the first goal, and for the second goal he arrived in the box and finished really, really well.

“It was a big performance from him today.”

How important is Henderson in the short and long-term future of Liverpool? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Liverpool, and other Premier League clubs, could soon be playing competitive matches in the United States or other foreign territories.

CHARLOTTE, USA - Saturday, August 2, 2014: Liverpool take on AC Milan during the International Champions Cup Group B match at the Bank of America Stadium on day thirteen of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Associated Press report on Wednesday that clubs have now asked the league to conduct a feasibility study into global expansion options.

The Daily Mail claim “The Premier League could host a round of games abroad in the future”. They say “Plans for an overseas set of matches are in an embryonic stage, but would appeal to the English top-flight’s huge global audience.”

“A round of matches played abroad in late November or early December would be ideal for US audiences,” claims writer Matt Lawton.

However, the less sensationalist AP report admits that regular season Premier League games being played abroad is unlikely in the immediate future, but lucrative pre-season friendlies and expanding the existing Premier League Asia trophy tournament to other continents.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail report that UEFA too are looking into playing matches abroad in Asia, America and the Middle East.

They write that “European football’s ruling body have been considering ways of increasing global interest in sponsorship and media rights, and elevating games that already involve their marquee teams by giving them UEFA branding and organisation is the preferred option.”

Liverpool have visited America for their pre-season twice in the last three years, and this past summer played five games in the USA; in Boston, Chicago, New York, Charlotte and Florida.

The match in Charlotte attracted just under 70,000 fans, while the game at New York’s Yankee Stadium against Man City also saw a high crowd of 49,653.

The “Guinness International Champions Cup” final between Liverpool and Man United in Florida had an attendance of 51,014.

The Reds’ lowest attendance was in Chicago, where 36,170 watched them beat Olympiakos.

Ola Toivonen: Now plying his trade in Ligue 1

Ola Toivonen, who is now on the books at Rennes, admits he regrets not pushing for a move to Liverpool in 2010.

The Swedish striker was hot property during his early days at PSV Eindhoven, with an impressive strike rate sparking inevitable transfer talk.

Various Premier League clubs were said to be monitoring his situation, with scouts from Anfield among those to be reporting back to English employers.

No deal was ever agreed, though, and Toivonen remained in Holland.

Things started to turn sour for the 28-year-old at PSV last season and the decision was taken to offload him in January.

The likes of Liverpool and Newcastle United had, however, turned their attention elsewhere and Toivonen has taken on a new challenge in France.

He told L’Equipe: “A new start might be a little too strong, but I needed a challenge.

“It’s a big change. Physically, there is a big difference. The players here are really big and tough.”

Toivonen added: “The only thing I regret from my time at PSV is that I did not fight hard enough to get the club to let me join Liverpool.

“They tabled two offers while Roy Hodgson was the coach.”

JORDAN HENDERSON : FROM ZERO TO HERO (Cuma bagi penggemar novel)

pengurus baru pasukan.

Karier Hendo kelihataan seperti menemui jalan

buntu di Liverpool, sehingga datang tawaran

daripada Fulham pada penghujung minggu

perpindahan, tetapi mengejutkan apabila Hendo

mengambil keputusan untuk kekal di kelab dan

kekal ingin merebut tempat di dalam pasukan.

Keputusan tersebut sekaligus mengecewakan

penyokong pada masa tersebut yang inginkan

beliau dijual oleh pasukan secepat mungkin.

Ia agak mengambil masa apabila Brendan

Rodger meletakkan beliau dalam pasukan utama

dan Hendo benar2 seorang pemain yang lain

pada ketika itu. Pada perlawanan pertama

tersebut, Liverpool menamatkan perlawanan

dengan Swansea dengan keputusan 0-0, tetapi

Rodger benar2 teruja dengan sikap pemain

muda ini dan mengatakan ianya &039;menakjubkan&039;.

Brendan Rodger kemudian berkata "apabila

Jordan Henderson, remodel the player.

akibatnya, Hendo membuka akaun beliau

apabila menjaringkan gol pertamanya dalam

piala EUROPA menentang pasukan Udinese, dan

setelah itu beliau mula menjadi perhatian

penyokong2.

Dan pada musim lalu, beliau telah mencetak 4

gol dan 7 assist untuk pasukan. Sehingga

Rodger mendedahkan bahawa kegagalan

pasukan untuk merebut piala pasukan pada

musim lalu adalah kerana pasukan tidak

mampu untuk menggantikan beliau.

Kembali ke dalam pasukan Liverpool setelah

Piala Dunia lalu, Henderson telah pun mencetak

satu gol dan tiga assist biarpun berdepan

permulaan musim yang agak teruk.

Persembahan beliau pada perlawanan

menentang West Brom pada sabtu lalu, menjadi

pengukur kepada sejauh mana dia telah

melangkah. Dengan superb back hill assist

untuk Adam Lallana untuk gol pertama, dan

penyudah yang tenang di hadapan penyokong

bagi memastikan skuad mengutip tiga mata

penuh pada perlawanan tersebut.

Henderson telah dilantik sebagai Vice-Captain

setelah peninggalan Daniel Agger, dan ia dilihat

sebagai pilihan yang tepat untuk menggantikan

captain Steven Gerrard.

Henderson.

Adam Lallana never wanted his move to Liverpool to get "messy" and was upset by "completely false" suggestions he refused to play for Southampton in order to force the deal.

BASEL, SWITZERLAND - Tuesday, September 30, 2014: Liverpool's Adam Lallana during a press conference at the St. Jakob Stadium ahead of the UEFA Champions League Group B match against FC Basel. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

A graduate of Saints' fabled academy, the attacking midfielder played a key role in the club's rise from the League One doldrums back to the top-flight.

The 26-year-old captained the side to an eighth-placed Barclays Premier League finish last season, with those fine performances seeing him make a B£25million move to Liverpool.

Given Liverpool's history, Brendan Rodgers' philosophy and the chance to play Champions League football, it was an opportunity Lallana felt he could not reject at this stage of his career.

He is aware, though, that the move has left a sour taste with supporters of the club he was with since 2000.

"I never, ever wanted anything to get messy, if that's what happened," Lallana said.

"I don't look a lot into it or read a lot into it. I always wanted to leave on a good note and I'll always have special memories of the fans, the players and the people involved in the club.

"It is great to see them doing so well this season. People said they'd find it difficult this season, but they've recruited well, brought in great players and a good manager."

Lallana is not only pleased to see Saints flying high but to have a chance to set the record straight.

The unusual move to thank fans with an advert in the local newspaper was overshadowed by suggestions he refused to play for Southampton again – accusations he describes as "completely false".

"I didn't say I'd never play for the club again," Lallana said. "Once I knew of Liverpool's interest, I asked the club if they could come to an agreement and that it would be my wish to leave and join Liverpool. I make no secret of that, I'm an ambitious person.

"I just felt at the age I was at in my career and with Mauricio (Pochettino) leaving as well, it was (the) right time for me to test myself. It was a great opportunity.

"It's sad and I am disappointed that certain fans feel like that, but I can kind of understand why. They love Southampton, they are Southampton fans.

"I will always love Southampton. I had a great time down there. It's just one of those things."

Lallana was one of a host of players to depart St Mary's in the summer, but rejected talk that Nathaniel Clyne's call-up could see him follow suit.

The midfielder also dismissed suggestions it was an easy decision to leave Saints, with fans' favourite Matthew Le Tissier amongst those he sought advice from.

Lallana hopes in time the good times will be remembered by Southampton fans, but for now he is focusing on an exciting new chapter with club and country.

An unfortunately-timed knee injury disrupted his start to life at Liverpool, although he feels he is now getting back to his best.

Lallana has certainly impressed in recent matches and wants to follow up his first goal in a Liverpool shirt by doing the same with England.

"I still feel I have a lot to learn and prove," he said. "I don't think by any stretch I'm an established international. I have hard work to do to get to this level consistently."

Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia await this week, offering Lallana a chance to re-establish himself as a starter under Roy Hodgson.

A regular in the line-up ahead of the World Cup, Lallana began the first two matches in Brazil from the bench before starting the dead-rubber against Costa Rica.

"It's always good, even in training, to show the manager what you can do and remind him," he said. "If I get my chance, I'll be looking to take it and impress him. There's always going to be competition at this level.

"The amount of English players we have playing in the Premier League there's no shortage really, so there'll be people pushing you for your places."

What is your assessment of Lallana’s start to his Liverpool career? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Jordan Henderson: Expects to sign long-term Liverpool deal soon

Jordan Henderson: Expects to sign long-term Liverpool deal soon

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson says he does not see a problem in agreeing a new deal at Anfield.

Henderson, 24, was named the Reds' vice-captain last month and is viewed as the long-term successor to current skipper Steven Gerrard.

The Englishman has less than two years to run on his current deal and the club are hoping to tie in him to a similar long-term deal to international team-mate Daniel Sturridge.

Sturridge signed a new five-year extension last week and Henderson is expected to follow suit as low-key talks have been on-going for some time.

"I am just concentrating on playing football. I am not worried about that," said the England midfielder, who scored Liverpool's winner in the 2-1 win over West Brom.

"I am enjoying my football, I love this club and I want to be here for many years so that shouldn't be an issue.

"I'll let my agent sort that out, it's nothing to do with me."

Raheem Sterling, who has reportedly attracted the attention of this month's Champions League opponents Real Madrid, and Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho are next in line for new contract offers to reflect their growing importance to the team.
