Aaron Cutler is full of praise for Liverpool’s two Spanish full-backs, both of whom impressed last night.

If Liverpool have sleepwalked through the majority of this campaign Monday night saw them awake from a slumber. A vibrant display laced with movement, ingenuity and cutting edge dismantled Swansea and reinvigorated players and fans alike.

With confidence and momentum restored the reds are primed for a delayed assault on the top four; a fanciful ambition only weeks ago.

Last night’s victory was out of keeping with much that preceded it. Seldom have Liverpool pressed so intensely, created so readily and scored a hatful. Rarer still was the sight of summer recruits energised and playing without fear or pressure.

Adam Lallana was the undoubted star, rightly lauded throughout the press and social media this morning. However his match winning display was complimented in no small part by fellow signings Javier Manquillo, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can. Indeed as the team progress so too do these budding youngsters, each acquired with the future in mind.

In the case of our two Spanish fullbacks neither was afforded the desired settling in period. With injuries sidelining Glen Johnson, Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan at any one time an immediate baptism of fire commenced, spawning mixed results.

Moreno showed initial promise, a tendency to overlap and penetrate the final third refreshing. That said occasional lapses in concentration and a loss of bearings led to high profile errors, chipping away at confidence. A harsh and lengthy exile followed, Moreno the initial scapegoat for Liverpool’s supermarket sweep mentality.

On the flipside Manquillo has fared averagely. The attacking flaws in his game are contrasted by sound positioning and sensible if unspectacular defending. In truth the former Atletico Madrid man would receive far greater fanfare in decades gone by, his performances belonging to an age where defenders simply defend.

In many ways Moreno and Manquillo complement each other. The former is lightening quick and gung-ho yet defensively fragile, while the latter is steady and reliable if inhibited. A ying and yang combination they offset each other perfectly last night.

Moreno’s attacking instincts were evident from the off, linking well with Philippe Coutinho and overwhelming a bewildered looking Ashley Richards. A well deserved goal was testament to his running power and desire, a perfect surge demanding of Jordan Henderson’s cross. Moreover he was defensively alert, aiding Mamadou Sakho with the kind of cover Lazar Markovic deems ugly and unnecessary.

Across field Manquillo was equally impressive, albeit in his customary understated fashion. Providing a consistent if fruitless outlet he focused his efforts on protecting Can and stifling Gylfi Sigurdsson. A goal aside, they marshalled the Swans’ talisman well.

One of Manquillo’s great traits is stopping the cross. It sounds simple enough but Glen Johnson rarely blocks the source of an attack, giving way to the usual pandemonium that ensues whenever Skrtel and co are asked to defend aerially.

He is also rarely flustered. One of the great myths to stem from this season was that Yanick Bolasie humiliated him at Selhurst Park. Sure, the Congolese was pacey and menacing but Manquillo stood up manfully and was by no means overawed.

If proof were needed Palace decided to switch their wingers and charged Bolasie with tackling Johnson. The inevitable breakthrough duly followed; Neil Warnock bizarrely labelled a tactical master mind.

Manquillo has made no defensive errors in the Premier League this term. He is the definition of solid, those considered foundations a great base from which to build.

In time he will need to develop the attacking side of his game, particularly if Liverpool are to persist with their 3-4-3 variation. To date he has created just one chance in the Premier League, while the average distance of his passing is shorter than all but Jose Enrique. That said, dependability can prove invaluable when the team is playing itself back into form. Risk and reward will come in time.

Indeed it has been evidenced. Our abject Champions Leaague showing would have been worsened still had Manquillo not ventured up field and won an injury time penalty at home to Ludogrets. In essence that positivity earned a Europa League place. Do we thank him for that?

Manquillo often creeps up into good positions only to underwhelm. A simple square ball has replaced an ill-advised tendency to cross speculatively. Rodgers and co will no doubt dedicate hours to honing that final ball and key pass. Once acquired, they will have a quality full back at their disposal.

BURNLEY, ENGLAND - Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, 2014: Liverpool's substitutes Emre Can, Javier Manquillo, Alberto Moreno, Mario Balotelli and Sheyi Ojo before the Premier League match against Burnley at Turf Moor. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

By contrast Moreno has made three defensive errors domestically. His frailties however are a consequence of those attacking instincts, 15 chances created thus far and two goals scored. If he can add positional discipline to his game – the kind hinted at last night – he has all the tools to become a top class, modern day full back.

Lest we forget this is a 22 year old who attracted interest from Real Madrid last summer and muscled his way into the international set-up. Unlike Hodgson’s England Spain are not prone to capping any half decent, middle of the road national.

Those quick to write off this pair will eventually be forced to eat humble pie. Between them they have just 74 (senior) league appearances under their belt and few defenders were deemed finished articles at 20 or 22.

Both have work to do, as do the club in nurturing their talents. However we are beginning to see flashes of potential and that promise alone is enough to outrank supposed superiors.

New Year celebrations often come with a vow to do away with the old and usher in the new. Brendan Rodgers would be well advised to follow that motto. Our mini revival is due in no small part to the fresh impetus of youth. There can be no turning back.

BYE 2014. Welcoming 2015.

Reds menamatkan Tahun perit 2014 dengan

back To Back Wins!

Tapi tak sapa nak highlight pasal tu , tak kisah pun sebab anda masih mampu mencipta 4 gol. Tipikal Liverpool Rodgers style musim lepas, bolos sebijik atau 2 atau 3 tapi masih mampu mencipta 4 gol.

&039; We gave away a poor goal &039;

- Rodgers

Tapi pada boxing day kelihatan lemau. Semua pemain Liverpool masih letih selepas natal. sebab itu saya jawab satu je , win is a win ,clean sheet is a cleansheet.

Kerana syarat wajib back 3 mesti ada DMF

So priority is a Striker dan DMF. Keeper agak Susah sikit.

Suka duka cerita 2014 kita dah hadapi, komen marah, bengang ,komen, anak emas, isu memondan, komen bergaduh pasal lalang menghiasi ingatan saya. So far OK la!

Yg pasti kita masih teguh menyokong pasukan yg 23 tahun tersekat di skala 18. Keep faith sahabatku, you will never walk alone. Lose wins or draw, will not alone.

Kongsikan kenangan manis dan bengang anda jika sudi!

Brendan Rodgers believes his Liverpool side are rapidly improving after an indifferent campaign following the impressive 4-1 win over Swansea at Anfield.

Liverpool scored three goals in 18 minutes in the second half and ended a turbulent and rollercoaster year in eighth place in the Premier League, five points off the top four.

Rodgers believes Liverpool's performances December has shown his side are going in the right direction with a style that suits them.

He told Sky Sports: “It was an outstanding performance against a very good side in the top eight. For us to perform like that was very pleasing.

“A few weeks back we put a lot of work in to find a way to get that creativity back. We’ve seen in the last few weeks our intensity and pressing which leads to the creation of chances.”

Rodgers said the front three of Lallana, Sterling and Coutinho is making up for the lack of an out-and-out striker in the starting XI, and said Lallana in particular got his reward for abiding to the pressing philosophy.

“It’s something we’ve been searching for all season. We went with a similar system at the beginning of the season as we did last season, going diamond at the beginning.

“But we lost some players. We search for that tactical idea to go with. You look at the effort my players put in tonight; pressure, intensity, squeezing, hunting the ball after only having a game a few days ago.

“[Lallana] got his reward for a great performance and work rate. We asked the players to do that.”

The Northern Irishman said he felt the referee made the right decision not to take action on Raheem Sterling for lifting his hand to Federico Fernandez’s face, and also believes Jonjo Shelvey did not intentionally catch Emre Can in the face in the first half.

“I’ve seen both. The referee has probably seen them for what they are. Young Jonjo has swung his arm and probably caught him but not intentionally.

“[Fernandez] and Raheem were probably at it all night. Raheem clipped him round the head but I think the referee has dealt with it. It was the end of the game and I thought the referee dealt with it well.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praised Adam Lallana for an impressive two-goal performance in the 4-1 win over Swansea.

The England midfielder scored his side’s second and third goals, the latter particularly crucial after Gylfi Sigurdsson had pulled it back to 2-1 after Alberto Moreno opened the scoring, to earn back-to-back league wins.

“I am very pleased. He is a wonderfully-gifted player and it was a big move coming here from Southampton where he was the captain,” said Rodgers. “For all the players coming in to a club this size it is difficult because you never know with the expectations.

“They are now starting adapting to that, to what we are doing here and where we want to go.

“It is a very young team, with an average age 22-23, so I was very pleased with the overall performance of Adam.”

Lallana enjoyed a slice of fortune with his first goal after goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski’s clearance cannoned off him and into the net but his second was pure brilliance. “We ask the players to go and press and he got his reward,” added Rodgers. “It might only happen a couple of times in your career that you get goals like that.

“You see Raheem (Sterling) putting the keeper under pressure. He blocked it really well because if he didn’t block that line tactically the keeper probably rolls it out to the centre-half.

“He blocked that line which forced the keeper to kick it and gets that wee bit of luck.”

Sterling, as a central striker, improved as the match went on but his spat with Federico Fernandez which saw the youngster flap a hand at the defender’s head could yet result in retrospective punishment.

That is a fate which almost certainly awaits former Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey after he appeared to fling an elbow into Emre Can‘s face. “I have seen the two. The cameras will probably show it 100 times tomorrow and we will get bored of watching it,” said Rodgers. “Jonjo has flung his arm out and caught Emre on the side of his head.

“Young Raheem’s incident, the centre-half has slapped him on the side of the head and he has put his hand up and slapped him on the side of the head.

“I think the referee has called both right and got on with the game.”

Swansea boss Garry Monk has yet to see the Shelvey incident properly and he will review video footage before commenting. “I haven’t seen it. It is one I have to look at on the way home and judge it,” he said.

“From the talk from you guys (the media) I’ll have to have a look at it.”

Monk was disappointed with the errors which cost his side at Anfield. “I thought we played okay, we had the most possession but really we made too many mistakes and that is what cost us in the end.

“If you make mistakes at this level against a talented Liverpool side they will get punished.”

Adam Lallana said Liverpool were now back in the race for the top four after his two goals helped earn them a 4-1 win at home to Swansea.

The England international produced one of his best performances for the Anfield club since joining in the summer from Southampton as the Reds made it back-to-back wins following victory over Burnley.

“It’s a massive result, we said before it was important we got back-to-back wins in the Christmas period. I thought the lads were brilliant tonight,” Lallana said on Sky Sports 1.

“We haven’t put in many good performances this year and we as a team knew that. Hopefully we’ve turned a corner the last few weeks, but by no means are we there yet.

“We are finding performances now, we are finding a couple of good results, it’s our target to finish in the top four.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers described his side’s performance as “outstanding”.

“Apart from a 10-minute spell after we got the second goal it’s was a real dominant performance,” he said. “I am very pleased with how we are developing. We are finding a way to get that creativity whilst remaining solid and compact.”

The Reds boss praised Lallana, saying: “He got his reward for a great performance and a great work rate.”

Gary Monk said his Swansea side were made to pay for errors, with Liverpool’s second goal from Lallana coming directly from a mistake by visiting goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

“I think we made two many mistakes, ultimately when you make that many mistakes in any game you are going to put yourself under pressure,” he said.

Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey escaped a red card after appearing to throw an elbow into Emre Can‘s face. But Monk, who has ordered Shelvey to address his disciplinary problems, said: “I haven’t seen it, I have to go back in with the analysts and have a look at it.”

In a performance hallmarked by attacking play, a defensive display from Emre Can in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Swansea City still shone, writes Jack Lusby.

It was the line-up that many Liverpool fans have been calling for for the majority of the season so far; against his former side, Swansea City, Brendan Rodgers fielded a bold side.

Rodgers, forced by the rigours of the festive schedule, shuffled his pack, with several of the players who started in Boxing Day’s 1-0 victory away to Burnley rotated.

Out went Steven Gerrard, out went Kolo Toure and, perhaps more surprisingly, out went Lazar Markovic—the latter had impressed in recent games in a left wing-back role.

One outstanding feature in this much-changed starting XI was Emre Can.

The 20-year-old started the game alongside Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho in a back three, and had a big challenge on his hands, with the likes of Wilfried Bony, Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge set to thrive off the majestic creativity of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

However, a hugely comfortable display from Can in Monday’s 4-1 victory over Swansea will give Rodgers much to think about, and finally it is in a positive light.

Can as Centre-Back

Signed, ostensibly, to bolster Liverpool’s midfield ranks, Can’s role as a right centre-back at Anfield outlined a different set of qualities in the 20-year-old.

Prior to the game, This is Anfield’s Henry Jackson outlined how Can could make the centre-back role his own.

“Despite his undoubted excellence in midfield, his future should lie at centre-back for now—especially if [Liverpool] are to continue with three at the back where the right and left sided centre-backs must be mobile and dynamic.”

With Sakho operating on the opposite central defensive flank, with Alberto Moreno ahead of him and the primarily defensive Javier Manquillo at right wing-back ahead of Can, this role suited the German perfectly on Monday.

Can showed his strength in defence by expertly shepherding former Red Jonjo Shelvey off the ball in the Liverpool penalty area on 39 minutes.

Receiving an elbow in the jaw from the petulant Swansea midfielder in return serves as evidence of Can’s overbearing presence.

Furthermore, an exceptional raking long pass in the opening 10 minutes displayed the midfielder’s passing ability; were it not for a heavy touch from Moreno, Liverpool could have started with a bang.

A mixture of direct balls and composed, short passes hallmarked Can’s game; a quality matched by Sakho.

Can’s masterful attributes were on show as the defender helped Liverpool win the key battles in their own half.

Key Battles

One name stood out in the build-up for Swansea, with Ivory Coast centre-forward Bony in exceptional form for the Swans so far in 2014/15.

A formidable physical presence, Bony has been flagged as one of the ones that got away for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, and the striker’s aerial and physical presence is the antithesis of the struggling Mario Balotelli’s play.

Furthermore, an underrated goal record underlines Bony’s brilliance.

Fortunately, Can was part of the Liverpool defence that kept Bony under wraps; the 20-year-old consistently matched Bony for strength.

One flaw appeared as Bony’s aerial presence allowed Sigurdsson the freedom of the Liverpool box to score Swansea’s second-half consolation effort.

Sigurdsson has been the player fuelling Bony’s finishing brilliance this season, having returned to the Liberty Stadium as Swansea’s most beloved and most important player.

Helpfully, Rodgers’ set-up on Monday perfectly suffocated Sigurdsson’s qualities, and Can was central to this.

Working towards a group effort in continually pressuring the dangerous playmaker as swiftly as possible this, as Luis Suarez outlined in his recent autobiography, is in keeping with Rodgers’ philosophy: “[We had to] keep possession of the ball and, if we lost it, to pressure to get it back.”

Lucas Leiva, Jordan Henderson, Manquillo and finally Can—serving as the final line of defence against Sigurdsson—swarmed around the midfielder, stymieing his creativity.

As mentioned, one blemish stands with Sigurdsson’s goal, but on the whole, the midfielder was successfully annulled throughout; a key factor in Liverpool’s ease to victory.

Tactical Flexibility

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, December 29, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers before the Premier League match against Swansea City at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Much of Liverpool’s success of late has stemmed from a tactical switch by Rodgers, and Can has fitted into this adroitly at centre-back against both Burnley and now Swansea.

Can, Skrtel and Sakho served as a balanced back three, with Skrtel’s raw qualities matched by the pair’s composure in possession and intelligent use of defensive strength.

After his troubles at the back, will Dejan Lovren be able to force his way back into the side now?

His only chance, at present, may fall due to Can’s versatility; Rodgers spoke of this positive quality prior to the game.

At just 20 years old, Can excelled in a relatively new role at centre-back—having played there sporadically for Bayer Leverkusen and the Germany U21s—and it is this versatility that will endear him most to Rodgers.

While this 3-4-3, high-tempo, intensive system is working wonders for the Reds at present, there will be times this season when Rodgers will need to switch his system.

Can’s ability to perform at centre-back, in the centre of midfield—as he has shown previously this season—and further as an auxiliary full-back will allow Rodgers room for maneuver.

An outstanding, confident, composed performance at right centre-back against Swansea City on Monday night outlined just how effective Emre Can will be for Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers move his side forward.

Liverpool’s attack may have shone, but their defence was much improved with the German in the side.

Should Emre Can continue as Liverpool’s centre-back after Monday night? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool saved their best performance of the season so far until the final game of 2014, comfortably seeing off Swansea City 4-1 at Anfield, with goals from Alberto Moreno, Adam Lallana (2) and Jonjo Shelvey (own goal).

Philippe Coutinho was they key man in attack, creating Lallana’s second and making the Reds tick. The two attacking midfielders were the difference in the game and received much praise.

The one worrying moment saw Sterling, who looked tired in the second half, raise his hands after provocation from Swansea defender Federico Fernandez – Liverpool will be hoping the 20-year-old doesn’t pick up a ban consequently.

Liverpool romped to a superb 4-1 win over Swansea at Anfield on Monday night, with a double from Adam Lallana, an own goal from former Red Jonjo Shelvey and an Alberto Moreno strike inspiring Brendan Rodgers‘ side to arguably their finest win of the season so far.

Liverpool 4-1 Swansea

Premier League / Anfield / Monday, 29th December 2014

Goals: Moreno (33), Lallana (51 & 62), Shelvey OG (69); Sigurdsson (52)

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Swansea City FC

Brendan Rodgers made four alterations to the team that beat Burnley 1-0 on Boxing day, as Liverpool looked for another festive victory.

Kolo Toure made way for the impressive Emre Can at centre-back, Steven Gerrard was rested with Jordan Henderson returning to the middle of the park, while Simon Mignolet, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno also came in.

Brad Jones and Lazar Markovic didn’t retain their places- Jones because of injury- while former Red Jonjo Shelvey started in a dangerous looking Swansea side.

Martin Skrtel headed straight at Lukasz Fabianski after five minutes, as Liverpool enjoyed a dominant and impressive opening to proceedings.

Raheem Sterling was then denied by the former Arsenal goalkeeper, and Adam Lallana fired over from close-range from the rebound. Philippe Coutinho tested Fabianski soon after.

The visitors offered virtually nothing in terms of attacking play in the first 25 minutes, and although they started to come into the game a little, Rodgers’ side looked comfortable for once at the back. Can’s inlusion, coupled with Mamadou Sakho‘s form, definitely had something to do with that.

Nathan Dyer’s tame header was Swansea’s first effort of note on the half-hour mark, but in the 33rd minute Liverpool were ahead.

Lallana and Henderson combined well, with the latter’s cross finding Moreno to fire home from six yards out. It was his first Anfield goal, and gave his side a deserved lead.

Coutinho forced Fabianski into a good save from a tight angle, as the hosts continued to impress greatly. There had arguably not been a more dominant first-half display from them this season.

Garry Monk’s men enjoyed a decent end to the half, without creating a huge amount, while the impressive Coutinho’s long-range strike tested the busy Fabianksi.

At half-time it was Moreno’s goal that was the difference between the two sides.

Half-time: Liverpool 1-0 Swansea

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Swansea City FC

There were no changes at the interval, as Liverpool looked to build on an excellent opening 45 minutes.

After 50 minutes, one of the most bizarre goals Anfield has seen in many years occurred. Fabianski’s kick was charged down by Lallana, and the ball looped into the Kop net. The lead was doubled.

A minute later it was 2-1, however, and the Reds conceded just after scoring exactly as they did against Arsenal. Gylfi Sigurdsson pounced from close-range following indecisive Liverpool defending.

Wilfried Bony forced Mignolet into a good save and Sterling hit the post moments later, and it had been a wonderfully entertaining opening 10 minutes of the second-half.

Lallana hit the target after 60 minutes, as the game continued to look extremely open. A minute later, the 26-year-old made it 3-1 though.

Coutinho’s majestic flick found the former Southampton man, who shimmied past two Swansea players before firing home emphatically.

It was 4-1 midway through the second-half, as Shelvey’s misdirected header from Henderson’s corner went in. The young Englishman had been lucky not to see red after an elbow on Can in the first-half. The Reds were rampant, and Anfield was joyous.

Coutinho, who was sensational at times, fired over, while on a rare negative note, Sterling was fortunate not to be red carded after lashing out at Federico Fernandez.

Henderson shot wide from 30 yards in the final few minutes, and substitute Mario Balotelli almost scored his first Premier League for the club.It was the last real moment of note in the game.

It had been a wonderful Liverpool performance on the whole, and was a superb way to finish 2014 after an up and down year.

Man of the Match: Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Manquillo, Lucas, Henderson, Alberto, Coutinho (Borini 90), Lallana (Markovic 77), Sterling (Balotelli 83).

Subs not used: Ward, Toure, Gerrard, Lambert

Swansea starting XI: Fabianski, Richards, Fernandez, Williams, Taylor, Britton, Shelvey, Dyer, Sigurdsson, Routledge, Bony.

Adam Lallana: Celebrates his first goal at the Kop end

Adam Lallana: Celebrates his first goal at the Kop end

Adam Lallana netted twice and Jonjo Shelvey scored an own goal as Liverpool saw off Swansea 4-1 at Anfield, meaning the Reds ended 2014 in eighth place in the Premier League.

Alberto Moreno scored the opener a third of the way through the game, converting from six yards after starting and ending a move involving Lallana and Jordan Henderson.

Former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey could have been sent off before half-time after his flailing arm caught Emre Can, but referee Andre Marriner was unmoved.

Two goals in two minutes set the game alight in the second half. First Lallana got in the way of a Lukasz Fabianski clearance for a bizarre second for Liverpool, before Gylfi Sigurdsson slotted home from six yards at the other end.

Lallana extended Liverpool’s lead again, drilling home from 12 yards after a superb assist from Philippe Coutinho, and the Reds were 4-1 up with just over 20 minutes remaining after Henderson’s drilled corner was flicked in by Shelvey for an own goal.

Former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers set Liverpool up in a 3-5-2 formation with Can one of three centre-backs and one of four changes, but the new look to his side did not dishevel them.

Henderson’s drilled corner found Martin Skrtel at the far post, but the defender’s powerful header from six yards only found the hands of Lukasz Fabianski.

Moreno, who attempted to get forward at every opportunity at wing back, found Raheem Sterling with a drilled cross after 15 minutes, but the Englishman’s powerful volley was straight at Fabianski.

The ball bobbled around the area before falling to Lallana, who disappointingly fluffed his effort over the bar from just 12 yards.

Liverpool went ahead on 33 minutes, with Moreno starting and finishing the move. The Spaniard piled forward from the left of Liverpool’s midfield, offloaded to Lallana who then found Henderson in space on the left, before a drilled centre was converted by Moreno from six yards for his second Reds goal.

The hosts nearly doubled a few minutes later, Coutinho twisting and turning on the byline only to see his low effort saved from the left at the near post by Fabianski.

There was controversy just before half-time when Swansea midfielder Shelvey, returning to his former club, appeared to fling his arm at Can while piling through the Liverpool defence.

The second-half began in bizarre fashion after Fabianski’s clearance came off the body of Lallana to loop into the Swansea net for 2-0.

But the visitors went up the other end to halve the deficit just seconds later, Sigurdsson converting from close range after Mamadou Sakho headed the ball into his path.

Liverpool restored the two-goal lead on 61 minutes through Lallana again, getting on the end of a fine flick from Coutinho to glide past two defenders and slot home into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

And it was four with 21 minutes remaining after Shelvey flicked on a drilled corner from Henderson at the near post to leave his own goalkeeper with no chance.

Bafetimbi Gomis hit the bar late on before Wayne Routledge’s effort fizzed just over from 20 yards, but Liverpool were comfortable winners on the night, leapfrogging Swansea to end 2014 on a high.
