Demolition work begins ready for Anfield expansion

Demolition work has begun on the houses immediately behind Anfield’s Main Stand ready for the proposed expansion of Liverpool’s stadium.

Houses on the side nearest the Main Stand on Lothair Road are currently being cleared and knocked down in readiness for the proposed expansion that will see the stand’s capacity rise from 12,237 to 20,538.

Eventually all houses on both sides of Lothair Road will be knocked down, along with houses on the east side of Alroy Road and a small number of houses on Anfield Road and Rockfield Road. This work is being carried out by Liverpool City Council, not the Football Club, as part of the Anfield Regeneration Scheme.

Liverpool submitted the planning application for the expansion, which forms phase one of a two-part project, earlier this week and hope that work can begin later this and be completed in time for the start of the 2016/17 season. The new Main Stand will take Anfield’s overall capacity to approximately 53,783.

Of the 20,538 seats, 15,910 will comprise general admission, with 4,628 new premium seats.

Once complete, the work will see a large open space outside the new Main Stand and all perimeter fences around the whole stadium will be removed.

Phase two of the project will see the Anfield Road Stand expanded from 9,074 seats to 13,860 – taking Anfield’s overall capacity to approximately 58,569.

Steven Gerrard revels in the happiness that surrounds Liverpool

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has spoken openly at a pre-World Cup press conference about the positive spirit Brendan Rodgers has instilled at Anfield.

Gerrard, along with fellow Reds Glen Johnson, Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling, are just over a week away from their opening World Cup again against Italy in Brazil.

After a phenomenal season full of passion and positive mental attitude, Gerrard is hoping to carry the momentum over to his international career.

Speaking in Miami ahead of Saturday’s final World Cup warm-up friendly against Honduras, Gerrard is quoted on LiverpoolFC.com as saying, “You have to give huge credit to the manager.

“He came in, a young manager taking a huge job – and to have the impact he’s had in such a short space of time is phenomenal really.

“I’m enjoying every minute working with him, he’s a top manager, a top bloke; I’m skipping into work, enjoying training, and I think every player’s the same.

“You can see it in our performances – everyone’s expressing themselves, playing with confidence and belief. He takes the fear away from you as a player. You’re not scared to make mistakes under him because you’re playing the exact way he wants you to play.

“His first six months was obviously everyone getting used to him but as soon as the message got across to the team, I think we’ve carried it out really well over the last 18 months.”

Liverpool confirm pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund

Liverpool will play Borussia Dortmund in their final pre-season friendly of the summer at Anfield on Sunday, 10th August.

The German side will come to Anfield for the first time since 2001 when Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool beat them 2-0 thanks to goals from Valdimir Smicer and Stephen Wright.

The fixture had been expected with rumours abound last month that it would be announced as the Reds’ final warm-up game to the 2014/15 Premier League season.

It will also see the return of midfielder Nuri Sahin to Anfield, who returned to Dortmund after a brief spell under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13.

Both sides are renowned for their passionate support and the 12.15pm kick-off is being hyped by Liverpool’s chief commercial director Billy Hogan.

He told the club’s official website, “It has been over a decade since Borussia Dortmund played at Anfield so we are looking forward to welcoming them back.

“This fixture promises an electric atmosphere as both teams get ready for the upcoming season and the possibility of meeting again in the Champions League.”

Much has been made of the similarities in how Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund are run, creating stable foundations for success on the pitch on a sound business model off it.

The announcement on Friday of the game against Dortmund completes Liverpool’s pre-season schedule, which kicks off at Preston on Saturday, 19th July.

Could Xherdan Shaqiri be Liverpool’s next summer signing?

With Liverpool confirming the signings of Emre Can and Rickie Lambert this week, Gunnar Lemmermann looks at another transfer target for Brendan Rodgers and his transfer committee: Xherdan Shaqiri.

Following Southampton releasing a statement publicly ruling out any transfers until a new manager is in place, and Liverpool reportedly keen to get their business done early this summer, The Reds could switch their attention to 22-year-old, Yugoslavia-born, Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri, currently at Bayern Munich, started his career in the youth ranks at FC Basel in Switzerland.

He made his Basel debut as a substitute on 12 July 2009 in Basel’s 2009–10 season opening game against FC St. Gallen. He was part of the Basel side which beat Manchester United in a 2-1 win in the 2011-12 Champions League season where he provided both assists.

Since then the 5 ft 6 inch winger made the switch to German giants Bayern Munich where he won 2 league titles, 2 German cups and 1 Champions League medal.

Style of Play

By trade a left winger, it’s hard to pin down a definitive position for Shaqiri. He has an excellent footballing brain, is quick on his feet, can shoot and has good passing accuracy. Due to his intelligence and power he can be used on either flank, as well as a wing back and even a centre forward or second striker.

Using Shaqiri on the flank, his pace and movement would give give our Brazilian magician Philippe Coutinho the chance to pick him out with his great passing and vision.

Shaqiri is more than capable of tracking back and help out his full back. And although he isn’t the most defensive minded wide-man around, he does get back when needed.

2013/14 Form Guide

The 2013/14 season was a successful one for Pep Guardiola in his first season with Bayern Munich. Winning the league title and also the German cup, while going out of the Champions League against Real Madrid did blot the copybook.

Bayern won 29 games, drew 3 and lost just 2, racking up an impressive 90 points, scoring 94 goals and conceding just 23. They finished 19 points above 2nd placed Borussia Dortmund, securing the title after just 27 games – a record in German history.

Shaqiri scored just six of the goals during Bayern’s record-breaking campaign and one during the cup-winning run, racking up a total of 7 goals in 26 appearances – of which just 10 have been in the starting eleven, 16 as sub.

“He doesn’t start for us but he is a very important part of the team. Basically he is our 12th player. A super sub.”

The player himself stated:

“It is clear that I cannot continue like this. If nothing changes, I will have to make some changes myself.

“I want to play in the important games as well and not just in the Bundesliga. I don’t want to go through another year like this.

“I only want to play for a major club. The Champions League is important to me. We will see what happens.

“England would be an option. If I were to leave Bayern, it will be for a foreign club. But it will have to be a club challenging for the title.”

Conclusion

Reportedly valued at around £15 million, Shaqiri could be an excellent (and cheaper) alternative for Adam Lallana. Obviously different player types, Shaqiri has been part of a title winning side since his youth and has played Champions League football. Experienced and four years younger than Lallana.

Linked with Shaqiri last summer, Brendan Rodgers could come in for him this year. Shaqiri didn’t want a move last season as he was hoping that with the new manager coming in (Guardiola replacing Jupp Heynckes), he would get more game time. With playing time hard to come by at Bayern Munich through the sheer talent on the flanks – Robben, Mueller, Ribery – the player would seemingly entertain a move now, especially with Liverpool back among Europe’s elite.

Okay, forgive us for the terrible dancing puns in the headline, but it was another excellent day for Liverpool Football Club, confirming their second signing of the summer.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can will become a Liverpool player on July 1st subject to documentation being ratified.

The 20-year-old is one of the rising stars of German football, likened to a deeper Jordan Henderson by some and praised for his versatility by others.

Jack Lusby has scouted the German Under-21 international and today brought us this excellent report on Brendan Rodgers‘ latest signing, complete with statistics and videos.

It looks like another player may be joining Rickie Lambert and Can at Anfield in the very near future, with Alberto Moreno looking almost certain to make the switch from the south of Spain to Merseyside.

On Thursday night, Spanish newspaper El Confidencial reported that Liverpool have agreed an £18 million fee with Sevilla and a five-year deal with the left-back.

The Mirror report:

Several sources are claiming that the Reds have agreed terms with Moreno and that he will fly to Merseyside next week to have his medical and complete his transfer.

The five-time European Cup winners are finalising the fee with Sevilla, with the Spanish side wanting £17.9million for their prized left-back.

The 21-year-old will hopefully be a solution to a long-term problem on the left side of Liverpool’s defence and this week he was photographed spending time with Reds midfielder Luis Alberto:

The rumour mill will no doubt continue to churn away as we approach the madness of the World Cup, but it’s been more than a good start for Liverpool in the transfer market already this summer.

One slight blight to the day is the report from The Independent that Liverpool have lost two of their highly-rated youth coaches today with the resignations of Steve Torpey and Darren Hughes.

The pair follow Rodolfo Borrell to Manchester City’s youth set-up.
