Lucas Leiva (left): Full of praise for Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho

Lucas Leiva (left): Full of praise for Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes team-mate Philippe Coutinho is only scratching the surface of his potential, despite a string of excellent performances this season.

Coutinho fired Liverpool into the FA Cup semi-finals with a brilliant strike in the 70th minute of their 1-0 win over Blackburn at Ewood Park on Wednesday.

That goal came on the back of Coutinho’s brilliant last-minute winner in a fourth-round replay at Bolton and underlines his growing influence on Brendan Rodgers' side.

The 22-year-old has arguably been Liverpool's best player this season having not only grown in stature as a playmaker but also adding goals to his armoury.

"I have known him for a very long time and I know what he's capable of doing," Lucas told liverpoolfc.com.

"He's becoming an even bigger player for the club and he's got a long way to go in terms of age and experience, but he's already right there with the top players."

'Amazing'

From a personal perspective, Lucas is relishing the prospect of running out at Wembley after injury robbed him of the opportunity three years ago.

Liverpool made three trips to the national stadium in 2012 after winning the League Cup and losing the FA Cup to Chelsea, but the Brazil international missed all of them with a serious knee injury sustained in the previous November.

But having played his part in the 1-0 quarter-final win at Ewood Park, Lucas is hoping to get his chance in the last-four encounter with Aston Villa on April 19.

"Unfortunately I got an injury before we got to Wembley so I missed the chance to play there," he said.

"Hopefully I'll be fit and be able to play at Wembley. I've never played there, so it will be a very good experience and after many years here, to have that chance is amazing.

"I think everyone could see how hard we worked. We knew it was going to be a very hard game in difficult conditions, but I think we did well and we are so happy to get to Wembley and hopefully get to the final."

As a result of Liverpool's semi-final involvement their league match at Hull scheduled for that weekend has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 28 at the KC Stadium.

Brendan Rodgers thought the much-publicised review meeting he held with Liverpool’s players on Sunday paved the way for them to get back to winning ways in the FA Cup.

The Reds boss had denied a report that an internal meeting following the 4-1 defeat to Arsenal had descended into crisis talks and his players responded on the pitch by booking their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley with a hard-fought 1-0 replay victory over Blackburn.

Philippe Coutinho‘s brilliant finish into the far corner with 20 minutes to spare was the difference between the two sides and Rodgers attributed the improved performance to Sunday’s gathering with his squad.

“There was a lot made of that,” he said. “I’m a coach who speaks openly to players. Part of the coaching philosophy for me is about reviewing and reflecting performance.

“It’s something that we’ve done all year when we were winning games. That provides us the lever to move forward – how can we be better, how can we improve?

“Because we lost a couple of games, there’s a lot been made of that meeting but that review was very, very important in how we want to work. If you don’t review and analyse your performance how can you get better?”

The stakes at Ewood Park were high for the Reds, who had fallen behind the Barclays Premier League’s top four following successive defeats, but their manager quashed suggestions their entire campaign had hinged on this result.

“I’d seen all of this about saving our season, it wasn’t about saving our season,” he added. “We want to compete at the top end of the league and want to win a trophy this year – that’s been clear.

“For us, we just needed to stay calm in the game and focus back on our performances. Our two performances against Arsenal and Manchester United weren’t to the standards we’d set for three months.”

Rodgers reserved special praise for his captain Jordan Henderson, who produced the assist for Coutinho’s winner just hours after his wife gave birth to their second daughter.

The Liverpool boss revealed Henderson told him there was no chance he was missing the fixture once the baby had arrived.

Rodgers explained: “His wife had a second child during the night so he had to go away, hadn’t slept so much, travelled all the way back again and put in the performance he did tonight. It was a real captain’s performance.

“He said to me, ‘Boss, as soon as the baby’s out, I’ll be coming back’.”

The hosts had chances to cause a cup upset, most notably when Simon Mignolet produced saves in quick succession from Tom Cairney and Ben Marshall early in the second half, and it was the man between the posts at the other end who almost beat him in the dying throes.

However, Simon Eastwood’s shot on the turn went straight down the Belgian’s throat moments before a spirited Blackburn side were afforded a standing ovation for their efforts.

“I’m hugely proud of the team and the whole football club,” said Rovers boss Gary Bowyer. “The supporters were tremendous tonight as well. There’s a hint of disappointment because we’ve not got through.

“We’ve certainly pushed them over the two games and had a right good go. Mignolet’s pulled out several good stops over the two games. We just haven’t quite had enough.”

Bowyer admitted he would like to see the side who dumped his men out now go on and lift the trophy for their outgoing captain Steven Gerrard, whose 35th birthday falls on the day of the final.

“I wish Liverpool all the very best,” he added. “It would be fitting if they could win it for Steven Gerrard, it would be a great way for him to finish his Liverpool career.

“He’s been one of the best midfielders for a long, long time in this country. Whilst I wasn’t wanting it to happen, now we’re out of the cup I certainly hope it does.”

Liverpool defeated Blackburn 1-0 on Wednesday evening, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in the process. We assess each Reds player on the night; please submit your ratings too.

Blackburn 0-1 Liverpool

FA Cup – Ewood Park – Wednesday, 8th April 2015

SIMON MIGNOLET (out of 10)- 8.5

Mignolet was once again superb, and Liverpool’s standout player on the night. The 27-year-old Belgian made two terrific saves straight after half-time that proved vital, and his decision-making was top-class all evening.

He continues to look more and more like Liverpool’s long-term first-choice goalkeeper by the game.

GLEN JOHNSON- 7

Johnson is never going to earn too many plaudits these days, but he enjoyed a decent game at right-back.

The Englishman got forward effectively time and time again, and his use of the ball was far better than of late. Defensively still far from perfect though.

DEJAN LOVREN- 7.5

The Croatian has endured a miserable first season at Anfield, but this was one of his finest performances for the Reds to date.

The 25-year-old rarely put a foot wrong all evening, winning aerial battles, reading danger and generally oozing confidence.

MAMADOU SAKHO- 5.5

The Frenchman was enduring a poor start to the game, almost gifting Blackburn a goal after dawdling in possession, before a hamstring injury ended his evening after just 27 minutes.

ALBERTO MORENO- 6.5

Another game, another adequate performance from the Reds’ likeable left-back. The Spaniard was more solid than spectacular, but did his job pretty well.

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva celebrates the win against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by Gareth Jones/Propaganda)

LUCAS LEIVA- 7.5

Lucas was an important presence in the middle of the park from start to finish, bringing steel and experience that can be vital in gritty games like this.

The 28-year-old played some incisive, unnoticed passes that kept the Reds’ attacks ticking over, and responded well after an awful performance against Arsenal.

JOE ALLEN- 7

Allen is a player who does the unnoticed things well and the noticeable things not so well, and that epitomised his display against Blackburn.

His defensive work and use of the ball was good in general, but he was also guilty of not doing enough in key areas. Unlucky not to win a penalty in stoppage-time.

JORDAN HENDERSON- 6.5

The captain on the night wasn’t at his influential best, but still played a big part in what was a massive victory under pressure.

The 24-year-old struggled to get going, but set-up Philippe Coutinho‘s winning goal with a clever pass. His 12th assist of the season; more than any other Liverpool player.

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the first goal against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 7.5

Coutinho wasn’t having a particularly good evening at half-time, after a sloppy display, but his influence grew hugely after the break.

The 22-year-old found far more space as the game opened up, and scored the only goal of the game after a clever exchange with Jordan Henderson. Nice to see a good finish from him after some criticism in that department.

RAHEEM STERLING- 7

The 20-year-old looked his side’s greatest attacking threat for much of the night, but he has still played far better.

The England international showed good strength, trickery and unpredictability, but a wayward second-half shot was evidence that his final product still needs to improve. Perhaps we just expect too much of him at times.

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge in action against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by Gareth Jones/Propaganda)

DANIEL STURRIDGE- 5

Sturridge still looks way short of his best. Time and time again his touch was woefully heavy, but he did improve a little in the latter stages of the match. Missed a great chance to put the game to bed late on.

Substitutes

KOLO TOURE (on for Sakho ’27)- 8

After a dire performance against Arsenal, Toure responded admirably with a brilliant display from the substitutes’ bench.

The Ivorian made some vital blocks and won almost everything in the air, performing excellently alongside Dejan Lovren.

RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Sturridge ’85)- n/a

Headed wide seconds after coming on, but no time to make an impact.

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

BRENDAN RODGERS- 8

With the 3-4-3 seemingly sussed by opponents in recent weeks, Rodgers showed guts in going with four at the back, and it paid dividends.

His in-game management was effective too, and he will be delighted that a relatively weak-looking defence kept a clean-sheet. A good night for the boss.

Referee- KEVIN FRIEND- 5

Friend is one of the worst referees in the business, and he was frustrating all evening. Time and time again he made baffling decisions, and he somehow failed to award Liverpool a late penalty after a foul on Joe Allen.

Jordan Henderson believes Liverpool’s 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory at Blackburn will give his team-mates a much-needed lift heading into the Barclays Premier League run-in.

The Reds settled the replay through Philippe Coutinho‘s 70th-minute strike and will now play Aston Villa in a Wembley semi-final on April 19.

Liverpool’s charge towards the Champions League places has been curtailed by defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal but midfielder Henderson feels the Ewood Park result will help get things back on track.

“It was a really important game for us today,” he told BT Sport. “I think everybody has been disappointed over the last couple of weeks with performances and results.

“But I think we showed great character today. We knew when we came here they’d make it difficult for us but from start to finish we controlled the game, I thought we were brilliant.

“Towards the end when we’d gone 1-0 up they were chucking everything at us but we defended fantastically.

“Credit to the lads really and we’ll go to Wembley against Villa and I’m sure it will be a tough game because they’re a good side.

“But it gives everyone a lift.”

Brazilian playmaker Coutinho drilled home Liverpool’s winner after a swift interchange with Henderson and the latter hailed a “little bit of brilliance” from the man signed from Inter Milan two years ago.

He added: “Philippe’s got a great football brain and the easy bit was just giving him it and he finished it fantastically well.

“That little bit of brilliance from him wins us the game and gives everyone a big lift.

“Hopefully now we can kick on over our last seven games in the Premier League and in the semi-final.”

Liverpool edged to a 1-0 over Blackburn in the FA Cup quarter-final replay on Wednesday evening, and we round-up the best reaction on social media.

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the first goal against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After two woeful results against Man United and Arsenal, the Reds responded with a deserved win against a stubborn Blackburn side.

The pitch made Liverpool’s passing game extremely hard to perfect, but Philippe Coutinho‘s well-taken goal with 20 minutes remaining proved to be the difference between the two sides.

It was yet another hard-fought cup triumph against lower league opposition, after similarly tricky ties against AFC Wimbledon and Bolton, but Brendan Rodgers‘ men easily did enough on the night to merit the win.

Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa side now stand between Liverpool and a place in the FA Cup final, with the semi-final showdown taking place at Wembley on 19th April.

Here is how social media reacted to the game:

‘Dublin_Kopite’ on the forums:

That was fairly comfortable without battering them. Was like winning every round on points while keeping them at distance with the jab all night. Control possession without any lapse in concentration whilst missing key players.

‘Hope in your heart’ on the forums:

Blackburn defended well, but we made it hard for ourselves towards the end by not taking our chances after the first goal. Still, the job is done, and it was never going to be a stroll in the park with that pitch. Looking very much forward to Wembley!!!

‘norwegian wood’ on the forums:

All in all a well deserved win. They created some situations through their aerial threat, but we were always in control. Kept the ball quite well, created chances, pressed well when we lost the ball, and also handled Gestede well.

Lucas dropped down to take the first challenge, which allowed the centre backs to focus on the second ball.We needed this. A loss today would pretty much have ended our season. Should be a good semi-final.

Liverpool booked a place in the FA Cup semi-finals on Wednesday evening, after Philippe Coutinho‘s second-half strike sealed a 1-0 win away to Blackburn Rovers.

Football - FA Cup - Quarter-Final Replay - Blackburn Rovers FC v Liverpool FC

Blackburn 0-1 Liverpool

FA Cup – Ewood Park – Wednesday, 8th April 2015

Goals: Coutinho (70)

Pre-match

Brendan Rodgers made three alterations to the Liverpool side that lost 4-1 to Arsenal on Saturday, as the Reds looked to make it to Wembley and book a semi-final date with Aston Villa on 19th April.

Glen Johnson, Dejan Lovren and Daniel Sturridge came into the team in place of Emre Can, Kolo Toure and Lazar Markovic. The former was suspended, while the latter duo were dropped. The 3-4-3 formation was ditched in place of 4-1-4-1.

First-half

Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling saw early efforts drift wide, while Mamadou Sakho was fortunate not to be punished after pondering on the ball in his own area.

Sturridge curled inches over in the 19th minute, as Liverpool enjoyed a better opening than in the recent losses to Man United and Arsenal.

Sakho left the pitch with a hamstring injury midway through the first-half, with Toure coming on in place of the Frenchman.

Coutinho almost squeezed a shot past Simon Eastwood, but the Blackburn goalkeeper managed to tip the effort wide of the post.

Glen Johnson poked a tame effort straight at Eastwood just before half-time, but at the interval it was goalless. Despite not creating much, Rodgers’ side had completely bossed proceedings.

Second-half

Simon Mignolet made a fine save to deny Tom Cairney seconds after the restart, and the Belgian then made an even better stop from Ben Marshall’s header from the resulting corner. The hosts started the half strongly.

The game was still finely poised with a quarter of the game remaining, and there seemed to be an increasing amount of apprehension among the travelling Liverpool fans.

With 20 minutes remaining Liverpool were 1-0 up though. Coutinho linked up expertly with Henderson down the right, and the Brazilian rifled a superb finish in off the post from a tight angle. That apprehension was now a distant memory.

Sturridge, rusty all evening, missed a glorious opportunity to double his side’s lead, while the 25-year-old’s late replacement Rickie Lambert headed wide seconds after coming on.

Unbelievably, goalkeeper Eastwood almost equalised in the dying seconds, but he shot straight at Mignolet. It was the final moment of note in the game, and Coutinho’s clinical strike was enough to see Liverpool seal a trip to Wembley in 11 days time. Tim Sherwood’s Villa await.

Mission : Get Gerrard To Wembley

status : Accomplished

Next Mission : Qualify to Grand Finale

FT BLALIV 0-1 QT

Mignolet

Man Of The Match pada pandangan saya dengan 3 crucial saves. 1 fingertip save dalam game ini.

Coutinho the Match winner

Thanks for the winning goal walaupun tak beraksi dalam kadar maksimum namun dia masih special player.

Stats Ringkas

Shots : 10 - 16

On Target : 4 - 5

Goal : 0 - 1

Passes : 267 - 573

Completed : 170 - 473
